How Did Jackie Robinson Break The Color Barrier
"The way I figured it, I was even with baseball and baseball with me. The game had done much for
me, and I had done much for it." This influential quote was expressed by the late great Jackie
Robinson. The man who broke the color barrier. An eminent man, Jackie displayed his true potential
in baseball by excelling at the second base position. Jackie played in the Negro Leagues before
debuting in the Major Leagues to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Over a century before this
prominent event blacks and whites could play baseball together. Teams were brought about in
several different ways. Nearly a century later, baseball became segregated. Blacks were forced to
form their own leagues to continue to perform their passion of baseball. The ... Show more content

Baseball's color barrier cracked on April 18, 1946 when Jackie Robinson, signed to the Dodgers
organization by owner Branch Rickey, made his first appearance with the Montreal Royals in the
International League. After a single season with Montreal, Robinson joined the parent club and
helped propel the Dodgers to a National League pennant in 1947. In 1947, the reintegration of the
baseball leagues started with the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson
became the first 20th Century black baseball player allowed in the all–white professional leagues.
When Jackie played his first Major League season and led the Dodgers to the National League
pennant, he shattered the color barrier thus allowing black players in the all–white Major Leagues.
Along the way he also earned National League Rookie Of The Year honors. P. Mills stated,
"Robinson's success opened the floodgates for a steady stream of black players into organized
baseball. Robinson was shortly joined in Brooklyn by Negro League stars Roy Campanella, Joe
Black and Don Newcombe, and Larry Doby became the American League's first black star with the
Cleveland Indians. By 1952 there were 150 black players in organized baseball, and the "cream of
the crop" had been lured from Negro League rosters to the integrated minors and majors. During the
four years immediately following Robinson's debut with the Dodgers virtually all of the Negro
Leagues' best talent had either left the league for opportunities with integrated teams or had grown
too old to attract the attention of major league scouts. With this sudden and dramatic departure of
talent black team owners witnessed a financially devastating decline in attendance at Negro League
games. The attention of black fans had forever turned to the integrated major leagues, and the
handwriting was on the wall for the Negro Leagues." The signing of Robinson was soon followed
by the signing

What Is America's Pastime?
Lets take a look into why I believe that baseball has not only followed in the footsteps our "Great
Country", but is still "America's Pastime." Ask yourself, "is baseball our country's sport, has it not
evolved with our great nation?" The answer is yes, for many reasons. Lets take a look back in
history, "President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as
the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared, 'that all persons
held as slaves' within the rebellious states 'are, and henceforward shall be free.' Despite this
expansive wording, the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to
states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched ... Show more content on

When we look our United States history, it is very similar, as long as we acknowledge it and just
accept it; it is our country and our sport. Look at baseball before 1900, our country was mostly on
the east coast, where our settlers were, and they played the sport with out African Americans.
Society was segregated, this was not a good thing, but it was how they lived. Once we moved on,
from 1910 through 1930, our country was changing, there was a war going on overseas, labor talks
and still some segregation. Baseball had its problems also; there was the "Black Sox scandal" (Ward,
Baker, Burns, 2011, pg. 144) Baseball was trying to clean up its act, with some talks of players
getting more money, so the unions played a role in society also. The middle class was having issues
with unions and then the first strike within baseball was in 1912. It all boiled down to money,
players were offered to come play in the "Federal League." WWI brought baseball together as our
country was fighting overseas, the National Anthem was not created until 1931, but was first played
at a baseball game by the band in the 1918 World Series. During the 7th inning stretch, they stroke
up the song at Comiskey Park. The stretch, turning into every uncovered head turning to "Old
Glory" and remembering our great nation, "it was then that 'Our Spangled Banner' would be an
integral part the national pastime." (Ward, Baker, Burns, 2011, pg. 132) Lets fast forward and look
at Hank Aaron, his career started in 1954 and ended in 1976, "if you are a baseball fan, you should
know that Aaron was the player that broke Babe Ruth's career record of home runs." (Tunnison,
2015) You can see the mirror effect with society; "the Civil Rights Act was passed less than a decade
before this feat by an African American was to be accomplished. The nation was buzzing with
controversy, with

After Amazing Achievements, Derek Jeter is Set to Retire
Derek Jeter has announced that after this upcoming 2014 season he will be retiring from the game of
baseball. In honor of this decision I wanted to recognize some of his amazing achievements as a
Yankee but also as a leader in the MLB.
From an early age Derek Jeter was being scouted and projected to be a major league star. As a senior
in high school, many professional teams including the Colorado Rockies scouted Jeter. A copy of the
scouting report on Jeter says, "This guy is special. You get excited just watching him warm up. All–
Star potential at MLB level." (Axisa, Mike, CBSSports.com). This was very high–level praise
coming from an MLB scout when talking about a high school senior. Being as it may, Jeter was not
drafted by the Rockies; the New York Yankees in the 1992 draft drafted him with the 6th overall
pick. In his rookie year with the Yankees he won the AL Rookie of the Year award and the Yankees
won their first world series in 18 years. This was the start of a very successful career for the Yankee
great. Jeter has proven the scouting report to be truthful, becoming and MLB All–Star 13 times. He
has been named All–Star game MVP once as well as American League MVP once, coincidently in
the same year, 2000. Also, Jeter has won the Gold Glove 5 times and has won the American League
Silver Slugger award 5 times. Possibly the most important statistic of Jeter's on the field career is
that he and his team have won 5 World Series Championships together over the span

Mike Trout In Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball has customarily shunned the idea of too much focus on individual player
limelight. America's pastime has prided itself on being the penultimate team sport.
There has been a burgeoning conversation over which player might warrant the moniker as the face
of Major League Baseball. The debate whirls around in circles, with as many as two–dozen names
receiving mention. However, these three players surface on every list as the worthy face of the
game.
Mike Trout
There isn't a top 100 list posted, which doesn't have the name Mike Trout on it. Trout is either the
top player, or at the very least, one of the top 3 stars on every ranking. The importance of pitching
vs. hitting and fielding, fuels the debate over who is number one.

If not the face of baseball as the best player, Kershaw may be without a doubt the most prolific
pitcher in the game.
Kris Bryant
The third in our trio of best current players in the game could come from a dozen different
superstars. A handful are salty seasoned veterans, with the rest emerging from a crop of young
talent.
Since youth is well served as a candidate for the new face of Major League Baseball, no list should
omit the Chicago Cub third baseman Kris Bryant from consideration. Bryant had an inauspicious
first game in April 2015, going 0 for 4 with three whiffs at the plate. The 25–year–old heir apparent
as the most recognized face in pro baseball hasn't looked back.
Bryant put up Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, following that with a National League Most
Valuable Player Award in his second full season. Not only is Bryant the first player to ever pair these
awards together in back to back seasons, he also helped bring the first World Series championship to

The Game Of Baseball : What Makes A True Role Model For Kids?
The game of Baseball
At the age of 6, I began to understand Americas greatest past time. I was a very ambitious boy who
wanted to look up to professional baseball players. Above all, I especially grew very fond of
Oakland Athletics 1st baseman Mark McGwire. I truly believed that his character was unmatched as
he performed at a very high level. He always seemed to be very collected in his approach. One of
the so called "bash brothers of baseball" Mark was a gifted individual that people began to admire
on and off the baseball field. That to me is what makes a true role model for kids.
49 homeruns made him an immediate star as a rookie. Mark holds the best homerun ratio for every
10.61 at bats, just ahead of Babe Ruth. This great player, whom played for team USA, before
entering the major leagues. Had a career that stemmed from 1986–2001. Mark McGwire finished his
career with 583 homeruns. Played for two different teams, including 11 years in Oakland and 5
years in St. Louis. Mark was also a 12 time all–star, 2 time World Series champion, AL rookie of the
year, 5 time homerun leader, and many other league leading awards. In any event whether you are a
fan or not, 1998 seemed to be a year of true excitement. Stamped in the back of my mind as the best
year in baseball. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs were in a heated battle to
become baseball's all–time homerun king as they both were chasing a long standing record set by
Roger Maris. Roger had

Bryce Harper's Stereotypes
Baseball icon and public figure Bryce Harper is known to be one of the most hardworking players
ever. He works to perfect his craft diligently each and every day. Harper prides himself in earning
everything he has. He also has his own line of baseball gear and clothing. He has an endorsement
with Under Armor and they have created him his own logo that goes on merchandise to be sold to
the fans. He is known as favorite among most baseball fans, largely in part to how he plays the
game, full of hustle and class. He is also known to have one of the best haircuts and beards in the
game.

Instagram and Twitter are his main social media platforms, both accounts having over 900 thousand
followers. Both social media sites contain the same kind of images, which are of the highest quality.
Harper uses Instagram well in the aspect of the images he posts. He frequently posts pictures of him
playing baseball, as well as snapshots of him and his family. In doing so, he does a great job of
promoting the idea that he loves what he does for a living, as well as showing the compassion he has
for his family and friends, outside the game of baseball. Despite frequent posts about baseball and
family, Harper is able to promote his brand through Instagram too. Every few weeks, Harper
includes a post that promotes his line of shoes, cleats, gloves, bats and more. He does a good job of
knowing when to post about his gear, and not posting so much that it gets annoying for followers.
His use of high quality images only enhance the chance of a follower wanting to look into his gear
more, and or buy it. On Twitter, Harper promotes and posts almost identically the same images as
his Instagram. The only thing that changes for his Twitter is the little messages he is able to post,
without pictures. He often posts bible verses or quotes that affect him on a daily basis. This helps
promote his image of a christian man, and reflect his mission of playing

Pro Sports Athletes Should Not Be Banned
As those who really follow and know baseball may know, "Since sports have been around, the
competitive nature of athletes has been pushed to the brink. As the times have changed, so have the
ways athletes go about in pursuing their competitive drive" ("Juicin' In The", 2013). Baseball has
been around for well over a century and so have Performance Enhancement Drugs. "PEDs can be
traced all the way back to 1889, when Pud Galvin, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (which
eventually became the Pittsburgh Pirates), used Brown–Sequard Elixir" ("Juicin' In The", 2013). The
truth is that over the last 20 to 30 years, these substances have benn ruining the game of baseball,
but most importantly, they are staining the purity of the game. The essence of the game is that the
game is that all players should be able to play the game they love on an even playing field. On the
Business side of things, the casual fan of the game do not care about MLB players using PEDs.
They watch the game because is entertaining. With that said, the better the entertainment, the more
they watch and the more games they attend. Therefore, the more money the league, the teams, and
the players make. "A huge part of watching sports is witnessing the very peak of human athletic
ability, and legalizing performance enhancing drugs would help athletes climb even higher" ("Why
It 's Time", 2012). It is human nature to want more, and the more we get, the more we want. The
fans want more home runs and also want

Jackie Robinson And The Baseball
Jackie Robinson did not only help initiate the integration of the game of baseball, but he also helped
initiate integration throughout America. The film Soul of the Game does not go into all of the details
regarding his career on the Brooklyn Dodgers, but rather it depicts his life and choices leading up to
his career in the Major Leagues. This film portrays important themes such as segregation,
perseverance, and doubt, and it applies to history in the beginning of the story of Jackie Robinson
and how America has gotten to where it is now. Although the court case of Plessy v. Ferguson
declared segregation to be legal as long as things were equal in 1896, baseball had already done this
about ten years prior. There was a creation of the Negro League in the 1920s through the 1940s so
that African Americans could have the same opportunities and white players even though they were
not allowed on any of the major league teams. Jackie Robinson was a rookie player on the Kansas
City Monarchs, a Negro League team, and being along side Satchel Paige, no one even noticed who
he was. According to the reading in Jackie Robinson and Race in America by Thomas Zeiler,
Satchel Paige was the first negro player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and he possibly
believed to be one of the best pitchers of all time. Another comrade of Robinson's during his time in
the Negro League would be Josh Gibson, one of the greatest catchers and hitters of all time. The

Games Baseball Was Based On Rounders is the main game that baseball was based on. It is a game
from Ireland where the offence team tries to score runs by swinging a club (Either wood, plastic,
metal, etc.) at a leather coated ball of cork (a baseball), while the defensive team tries to field the
ball and get the runner out. The game of Rounders is much less safe than baseball as there are no
mitts, pads, or even helmets. Rounders is still a very popular sport all over Europe. It was invented
by the famous author John Newberry in the late

Isaiah Thomas As A Role Model In College
When someone says "role model" who do you think of? For me personally it would have to be
someone who has gotten through struggles and gotten to where they are through hard work not just
having everything handed to them. A role model in my life would also have to be someone who is a
positive influence on me whether he/ she is on or off the field, court or rink. After what I had just
said in the sentence before my role model would probably be an athlete considering that I love all
sports and hope to play in college and maybe even beyond that. My role model and someone I aspire
to be like would be Isaiah Thomas. Especially after the playoff run Isaiah has led the Boston Celtics

After his senior year at Washington Isaiah declared for the NBA draft hoping to be drafted. To think
that a player like Isaiah Thomas was drafted so late people tend to think he is either not that great of

lack of height standing at five feet and nine inches. Isaiah although he was a good player was

even higher and to a better team but what he responded made me think. After all his hard work, and
dedication to the game of basketball, he would have been happy even if he was undrafted but he was
even happier he got the chance he needed to prove himself. This shows true confidence in yourself

Baseball Is The Best Sports Essay
Why Baseball Is the Best Sport
As Walt Whitman stated, "I see great things in baseball. It's our game– the American game."
Baseball has always been "America's Pastime"– making it the greatest sport to be played. From
Mike Trout to Ken Griffey Junior or even all the way back to the Babe, baseball has been a constant
success in the eyes of every fanatic. Four cases come to mind to prove that baseball is a cut above
all other sports. Baseball is superior over all other sports because of the food. All baseball fanatics
know that the concessions are a must, every time they visit the ballpark. In 2013, there were
20,421,361 ballpark franks sold at stadiums around the MLB. The hot dogs aren't the only attraction,
though. For example, the famous chili cheese nachos at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati or
the carne asada fries for the Padres. And the list doesn't end there. Every stadium in the MLB has
their own signature dish. Even though the MLB possesses the best ... Show more content on

The history behind this sport is unlike any other. Jackie Robinson came into the sport in 1947 and
changed the sport forever. Not only did this change affect baseball, it affected the whole world–
helping the end of segregation laws in 1964. Also the records are like nothing else. No other sport
can experience the atmosphere of a perfect game or a no–hitter in the making. Records are broken
each and every year in baseball, making the statistics of the game just as interesting as the game
itself. Another example of the MLB's rich history is that it brought our country together during a
time of need. For example, teams rallied around New York City in 2001 and honored all the victims
of 9/11. During World War 2, baseball was one of the only bright spots in the world. The sport held
families together and helped keep people's minds off of actions overseas. Baseball goes all the way
back to the 19th century, and there has never been a sport quite like

I Am Not Most People
Most people don't even get to pitch on their hometown baseball team, much less at a Major League
game. However, I am not most people. It was a rather dull morning at Blue Earth Area Middle
School. I was sitting in my MM (Morning Meeting) classroom while the daily announcements were
being droned through the intercom. They spoke of sporting events, sign–ups for this or that, and the
lunch menu. That's usually where they stop, except then Mrs. McGuire, my principal, started
speaking. I was so entangled within my own thoughts, I wasn't really paying any attention to what
she was saying. Then the kid next to me nudged me with her elbow and said, "Bennett, turn around."

That day was the first step towards throwing the first pitch at a Twins game, an event that will stick
with me for a long time.
After school that day, I was ecstatic to tell my baseball coaches about this huge opportunity, but they
didn't seem surprised when I told them. As it turns out, they had helped me to throw out the pitch.
When I won the tickets to the game, that was because of my perfect attendance. The first pitch,
however, was a separate competition, between me and the kids from other schools who had won
tickets. Teachers and coaches had to write something about their student and send it in for the
chance to win the chance at the first pitch, and my two baseball coaches had done just that. Not only
them, but the secretary and Mrs. Armstrong both wrote in as well. It's because of them that I got the
opportunity. About a month passed, and the date of the game seemed to sneak up on me like a
shadow. My mom was already in the cities because she was visiting friends the previous night, so
that just left my dad, my siblings, and I to drive up. Of course, with my luck, we couldn't even get
that right. We were already running a bit late, and our car was out of battery. We tried for a while to
start it, but eventually we had to get our neighbor to drive over and help jump our minivan.
Thankfully, it worked, and we were on our way. Using means slightly outside of the law, we made it

How Did Jackie Robinson's Impact On African American Culture
The sport of baseball has been a staple in American culture since the 1800s and has been deemed
America's past time for many years. The addition of African Americans into Major League Baseball
has made it a richer game. The United States of America is known as a huge melting pot as many
immigrants and refugees would come to America as a new home and beginning. Baseball was a
game that brought happiness to all Americans, despite their color, ethnicity or background. Major
League Baseball began in about 1867 and prior to the 19th century, we all know that the United

Jackie Robinson was signed to the Dodgers organization in 1946 by Branch Rickey and he was
assigned to the Montreal Royals in the International League. Branch Rickey's antics were bold and
unorthodox which made him frowned upon by his white colleagues until they realized years later the
continued success that the integration had brought the game of baseball, referred to as America's
pastime. Jackie Robinson debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 and became the
first African American major league baseball player of the modern era. Jackie Robinson spent one
season with the Montreal Royals before called up to the big league club, the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Jackie's impact was felt immediately and he was one of the reasons why the Dodgers captured the
pennant. He also won the Rookie of the Year award. Being the first player to break the color barrier
came with many unfortunate consequences because the US wasn't ready for integration and Jim
Crow laws were still firmly in effect. Jackie Robinson received death threats and had to endure
racial slurs during every game. Jackie had to "turn the other cheek" as Mr. Branch Rickey put it
because if Jackie would retaliate then the black integration movement would be rejected completely
by Major League Baseball because they would that African Americans lack of self control would
endanger the game. Also in 1947, Larry Doby was signed by the Cleveland Indians and became the
first African American player in the American League. The following year in 1948, legendary

Essay On Baseball Is Natural To Me
Baseball always seemed rather natural to me. With my dad being a basketball coach, it honestly was
my mother's doing that picked up a glove and ball. It probably was because her side of the family
seemed to compile an interesting set of baseball junkies, her even playing for Team USA Softball
one summer, and my god–father (her brother) garnering tons of scholarship offers and major league
try–outs for his work on the mound. Baseball just was in me. Something that was organic, fun, and
exhilarating. For the most part, I excelled from the start. However, just as baseball played an
innocent childhood role in my life, it also presented me with one of the biggest life lessons that I
have experienced. From early one, I was a standout in baseball. From ages 8–13, I made the league's
travel all–star team. Being the only black kid and the only one in public school, I often found myself
sometimes out of my comfort zone when it came to hanging out with the team. Generally, the team
consisted of the same players and coaches every year, so the faces rarely, if ever, changed. As we got
older, things began to change. I eventually found myself on the pitching mound for my respective
league teams starting at age 10. Now, not to toot my own horn, but I was hands down one of the
better pitcher's considering that I was younger than many of my fellow peers. By the time I was
twelve, I could throw a ball almost 70 mph. At age 13, my team went a whopping 15–1 beating
teams by an average margin of

Between the timeframe of 1920–1936 was a very different time. America was trying to get itself
together from what happen in the world war. One of the things America used to do for recreation
and those that were good enough to make it a profession was the sport baseball. According to ("How
Baseball Began," n.d.) no one is sure how baseball began but it took over the sport cricket. It also
stated that this game was played during the Civil War for recreation. In the earliest stages of
baseball, the players were not paid for their participation in the sport. Baseball easily became the
America's favorite sport and its favorite thing to do to pass time. I'm going to focus on a certain time

This was an opportune time the negros during this time start its own league. From Langston Hughes,
W.E.B. Dubois, Marcus Garvey and Luis Armstrong all helped with the black emergence at the time
(Simcox, 2005). Garvey wanted blacks to love themselves and be empowered (Simcox, 2005). This
motivation would help form the National Negro League. The Negro League would help with the
movement and allow fans to go to major events to show support (Simcox, 2005). More than 50,000
fans would come out to the all–star games to see the like of Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and Cool–

The Pros And Cons Of Steroids In Major League Baseball
In Major League Baseball, numerous players have put up tremendous statistics and record breaking
numbers. There are a great amount of players in the league that have done this naturally, however it
is not uncommon to see star players get caught taking performance enhancing drugs or steroids.
Steroid use in baseball has been an issue since the earliest days of the game, and can be seen very
frequently in players today. Jose Canseco was a star hitter in the major leagues, who had admitted to
steroid later in his career. Canseco once estimated that 85% of other players were also taking
performance enhancing drugs. Though that estimate is not proven, there are still many players today
that are taking these steroids, and it needs to remain an issue in the eyes of the MLB. Taking these
drugs not only promotes the risk of significant side effects and health problems to the player
consuming them, but it makes changes to the game itself as well. The way the game is being played
has changed over time due to this issue, and players are receiving advantages that other players are
not. Overall, these illegal drugs are unfair to other players in the game and simply are not safe, and
should never become legal in the league.
Throughout the history of major league baseball we have seen countless astonishing hitters come
pass through, some putting up record breaking numbers, at times too good to be true. Barry Bonds,
known as the "homerun king" was able to put up an amazing total of 73 home runs in 2001. The
very next season, he continued to present his skill with a .370 batting average. Between 1999 and
2007, Bonds' stats were shocking, hitting 351 home runs, winning four national league MVP
awards, and racking up 780 RBI's, 69 stolen bases, and just over one thousand hits. Alex Rodriguez,
better known as "A–rod" is another huge name when talking about the greatest hitters in baseball.
For nine seasons out of Rodriguez's twenty two season career, 8.5% of the balls he would put into
play were home runs. By the end of his lengthy career, he was able to collect 698 home runs, over
two thousand RBI's and runs scored, with over three thousand hits. He was also named All–Star
fourteen times. With numbers like these, it is hard to

According to the book, World Religions Today, by John L. Esposito, Darrell J. Fasching, and Todd

whether these powers be natural or supernatural, personal or impersonal, one or many" (9).
Furthermore, the book World Religions Today, by John L. Esposito, Darrell J. Fasching, and Todd

As stated earlier baseball can be considered to be just like other types of world religions, due to the
fact that baseball just like other world religions' creates a following for itself that people can be tied
and bounded to. To further emphasize this point, in the scholarly journal article entitled The Church
of Baseball, the Fetish of Coca–Cola, and the Potlatch of Rock 'n' Roll: Theoretical Models for the
study of Religion in American Popular Culture, by David Chidester, American director and producer
of documentary films Ken Burns talks about how baseball as a religion has created a following for
itself. Ken Burns talks about how baseball is a religion due to the fact that it operates in U.S. culture,
much like a church does, and Ken Burns justifies his explanation by coming up with the term "The
Church of Baseball" (744). Ken Burns uses this term in order to describe how baseball is in itself a
religion due to the fact that baseball is an organized human activity that functions the very same way
as other types of more familiar religious institutions (Chidester 744). Furthermore, Ken Burns and
the article's author David Chidester, go on to talk about how baseball as a religion has created a
following for itself by stating that, "The "church of baseball" is much more than merely the rule
book. It is a religious institution that maintains the

Baseball during The Great Depression Essays
Baseball remains today one of America's most popular sports, and furthermore, baseball is one of
America's most successful forms of entertainment. As a result, Baseball is an economic being of its

economic capabilities. For example, in Baseball, all revenue is a product of the fans reaction to

This argument shows the strong support that many people felt for radio broadcasting. Radio
broadcasting contributed to the survival of baseball in two ways. First, radio broadcast kept people
who could not afford tickets interested in the game. Second, radio broadcasting brought in new fans
that lived far away or never could afford to attend games. Therefore, radio broadcasting was a
popular and ingenious contribution to the survival of baseball during the great depression. In
addition, the farm system was created and refined during the great depression. The farm system was
a way to cut down the expensive sums of money spent on buying new players. Lauren Vorel, who is
a baseball historian, describes the farm system by saying, "The farm system allowed major league
teams to develop ballplayers in the minor league teams and draft them up to the majors, instead of
having to complete expensive trades with other major league teams for developed ball players."
Because of the farm system, baseball clubs saved money while still having valuable players. The
farm system was prosperous, and many teams began to have success from implementing the farm
system. For example, the White Sox's team was composed of many players who came from their
farm system. Because the White Sox did not trade or purchase players during this time, they saved a
lot of money. There are many more examples of the farm system's success, and it is still used today.

My Passion For Sports
My passion for sports began at a very young age. I grew up watching and attending all different
types of sporting events with my family. Another trait I've had for as long as I can remember is the
need to have everything organized. Once I was old enough I volunteered for the MLB All–Star
Game and saw how I could merge my two passions and turn them into a career. Having the title of
event planner and being able to coordinate events that bring so many people with the same love of a
game together is an ideal job for me. I want to be the one in charge of culminating the ideas for
events that get people excited about sports. The position I hope to hold at the peak of my career is
the Director of Gameday Entertainment and Special Events for the New Orleans Saints. The New
Orleans Saints franchise has an incredible reputation. They are well known for how much they give
back to the community not only in Louisiana but other areas of the country as well. The owner of
the company was a major contributor to the rebuilding of the city after it was demolished by
Hurricane Katrina. He cares about the people of the city and is continuously donating money to
various charities and encouraging business owners to help build up the local economy. That kind of
vision is what makes them the kind of employee that I would like to be employed by. Not only is the
company good to the community, they treat their employees great as well. They offer their

Motivation, passion, mental skills, commitment, and sacrifice are all components that help an athlete
become great. What motivation do you have to be great? Finding out what motivates you keeps you
going. Derek Jeter, in my eyes, was one of the greatest baseball players to play the sport. The man is
the definition of a leader and also led by example. Derek Jeter would soon replace Don Mattingly as
the captain of the New York Yankees and after the Don Mattingly's last game in the 1995 World
Series Jeter would remember how it felt for Mattingly. "When you remember those feelings, you

For example, if an athlete suffered an injury a Sport Psychologist may use goal setting and imagery
to help with the rehabilitation of the injury. Setting short term and long term goals for an injured
athletes is beneficial for the athlete because it shows they are making progress by accomplishing
these short term goals. By accomplishing goals it keeps the athlete motivated and increases there
self–confidence. With imagery, being able to envision yourself making progress and being able to do
exercises both help with the recovery of the injury. This is where mind–of–muscle helps with the
process of the rehabilitation of the injury. Maintaining a positive mindset, positive outlooks, and
positive emotions all are crucial to the recovery. SPC may help an athlete create and enter different
zones to cope with pressured situations. For example, take a World Series as a situation; if you are
up to bat with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning, two outs, and your trailing by 1 point
you want to be able to enter a zone that's allows you to be in a relaxed state of mind. There is a lot
pressure on you to perform but if you have been associated with a SPC then you would know what
kind of techniques you can use to reduce the pressure. A SPC can also guide an athlete through their
career. Athletes do not always see the bigger picture as they only see what is in front of them. As a
SPC they will be able to show or talk about the future of their career and be able to walk them
through it. For some athletes the future shows that they will no longer be able to play competitive
sports due to injury, decreasing performance, etc. SPC will be there to help cope with the reality of
this and for some athletes it is a hard transition. As an athlete I feel that it is important to know or

Introduction:
ARISE: A Destination–for–a–Day Spa, was established in 2009 by a woman named Kristen
Chambers in a Dallas suburb of Plano. As founder of the company, Chambers envisioned a spa of
full–time specialists who would serve as personal wellness coaches (2). She wanted clients to be
able to experience high quality luxurious spa visits, without worrying about the high costs
associated with recurring appointments. The idea and business model originally created, matched
what the global market and people wanted for spa services. People liked the idea of a personal
wellness coach. However, getting customers was not the problem. When hiring staff to fill these
PWC positions, Chambers mentioned that the tips would be a large part of their annual salary.
Chambers also mentioned that most people tip twenty–five percent. Attracting salaried personal
wellness coaches for ARISE was a big step, as most spas are contract work. ARISE offers favorable
benefits along with a luxurious place to perform spa treatments. However, after two years of being
in practice and the All–Star Team Plan was implemented, customers tip thirty percent less than what
was originally told upon hire by Chambers. PWC salary is thirty percent lower then what was
expected. Because of this, a PWCs commitment to stay is questionable, and their perceived
organizational support is low. Low perceived

Major League Baseball Impose Salary Caps For Athletes
Should Major League Baseball Impose Salary Caps for Athletes?
There are many professional athletes who are overpaid a tremendous amount of money. For
example, in 2013 the New York Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez's salary was $29,000,000.
Another athlete that was overpaid was the Philadelphia Phillies first basemen Ryan Howard. During
the 2011 postseason, he tore his Achilles tendon and had to miss most of 2012 season because he
was on the disabled list. He had a salary of $20,000,000 for 2012 and only played 71 games out of
162. Major League Baseball should impose a salary cap on athletes because athletes are being
overpaid, they are signing big contracts, and some are not performing well.
Many people believe that professional baseball

Essay about The Historical Significance of Negro Baseball...
Negro baseball leagues have a deep historical significance. Racism and "Jim Crow" laws
encouraged segregation of African–Americans and whites. Arguably, the players on the negro
baseball leagues were some of the best ever. Even today they are still being recognized and honored
for their wonderful contribution to baseball as a whole. It started when major league owners had
made a "gentleman's agreement" to keep blacks from playing in the game. The barrier that went up
was finally broken with a few black players being signed into white teams in the 1940s. It was once
said by Martin Luther King Jr., "[Segregation] gives the segregator a false sense of superiority, it
gives the segregated a false sense of inferiority." While that is true of ... Show more content on

The first all–black team formed in 1894 called the Page Fence Giants was from Michigan. Other
teams followed later and traveled throughout the country playing each other in "pickup games". In
1920, Rube Foster, who had been a pitcher–manager with other teams, organized the first Negro
National League. He had financial backing to support the eight teams he organized. The teams
consisted of the Chicago American Giants, Chicago Giants, Dayton Marcos, Detroit Stars,
Indianapolis ABCs, Kansas City Monarchs, St. Louis Giants, and Cuban Stars. With these teams he
controlled all the operations from equipment to scheduling games to selling tickets. Foster wanted to
add structure to baseball leagues to prove that it didn't have to be run the way whites do. He also
wanted to show white baseball league members that his ideas were good. "The attitude of the white

The move from trains to planes was a big one. This allowed teams to expand and form on opposite
sides of the country. Jet air transportation Even for short road trips became nearly universal in the
1950s. Another technological change was in the ballparks themselves, the installation of lights for
night baseball became universal everywhere in baseball in the 1950s. Night games were rare in the
1940s, but in the '50s they became a normal occurrence, with nearly every team playing several
night games a week. This made it easier to attend baseball games as well, as many adults had work
in the day and usually made it home before the games started. In the 1950s most fans began
traveling to the ballpark by car. This had its positives and negatives as did most technological
changes. Cars made it easier to get to games and such, but the difficulty of finding safe and easy
parking nearby inner–city ballparks was a huge factor. The biggest of the many technological

Derek Jeter Shortstop Essay
The debate about who the best shortstop of all time is, is very controversial but I can put an end to
many discussions. There are two main shortstops who are being argued over. Cal Ripken Jr. and
Derek Jeter. These two players are both great ball players but only one can take the title of being the
Greatest Of All Time. Derek Jeter is the best shortstop of all time for many reasons because he was
great at fielding, hitting, and he still is a great person because of what he's doing in retirement.
Derek Jeter's fielding performance was among the best in the history of baseball. Jeter played for 20
years and was a lifelong shortstop for the Yankees. He had a career fielding percent of .976 which
means that for every 1000 balls he was hit, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had 3465 hits in his career. This ranks him 6th of all time in the hits category. He has the most
hits out of all the shortstops to ever play in the MLB. Also, he hit a home run as his 3000th hit and
he was only the second person ever to reach this feat. He joined Wade Boggs in this club later
followed by a teammate Alex Rodriguez. (baseball–reference.com) Derek's batting average was
.310. So, for every 10 times he has an at bat, he gets 3 hits. This is very hard to do because of the
fact that the pitchers are throwing high 80s low 90s. Finally, his OBP, on base percentage, was a
staggering .377! An on base percentage of .325 is a good OBP, and Jeter's was higher than that.
These stats show how great Jeter was while at the plate.
Jeter retired in 2014 and he is helping others through his retirement. He and his sister Sharlee started
the Turn 2 Foundation. This foundation helps kids turn away from a life of drugs and gangs, and
turn towards a life of healthy eating and healthy lifestyle. (page six) This encourages others to help
people turn away and say "NO!" to drugs. This proves that Jeter isn't wasting his time during
retirement and proves that he cares about people who need help and people who

Baseball Is The Oldest Professional Sport
Peanuts, bratwursts, and fireworks after a home team win are everything that reminds all of us of
Major League Baseball. Baseball is the oldest professional sport played in the United States. The
Majors have two leagues known as the National and the American League. Each MLB year is
composed of a spring training, a regular season, an All–Star break, a postseason, and an off–season.
Hoboken, New Jersey hosted the first official game between the New York Nine and New York
Knickerbockers with the New York Nine winning twenty–three to one in four innings. However, it
wasn't until 1869, when the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first professionally founded team.

Opening day rings in the beginning of another long, stressful one hundred and sixty–two game
regular season. Many teams do not play on opening day, therefore, opening day is extended a week
from the first game. In fact, former St. Louis Cardinal Ozzie Smith with Anheuser–Busch started a
petition on Whitehouse.gov, stating that Opening Day should be considered an official holiday. The
regular season of major league baseball is composed of one hundred and sixty–two games for thirty
teams ranging from April–October. Twenty of these games is between the American and National
league called interleague play. Each of these games are a minimum of nine innings and twenty–
seven outs. However, if the game was tied in the 9th inning, it continues until the winning run comes
across home plate. These games lead up to the famous All–Star Home Run Derby and the All–Star
Game in the second or third Tuesday in July. At the mid–point of the regular season, there is an All–
Star break. Besides the postseason, this break is known for the All–Star Home Run Derby and the
All–Star Game. The players are elected by fans, coaches, and players. The team managers from the

"If I make it to the Major Leagues, I want to set up a foundation that will have a positive impact on

young age Jeter had a heart for helping people. Jeter's heart for the needy was an exceptional trait of
his that led to him being a wonderful role model off the field. Jeter decided in 1996, as a rookie, that
he wanted to start his charity. That year he talked with his father and got his charity started. He

one of the three greatest shortstops of all time was his leadership ability off the field. Ripken knew
what it meant to be a leader on the field, but he also knew what leadership off the field was. He
became a part of many charitable organizations, but none more influential than the organization
created by his own family. The Ripken children, including Cal Ripken, Jr., created the Cal Ripken,
Sr. Foundation to carry on their father's dream and legacy. Cal Ripken, Sr. wanted to see children
taught life lessons using the game of baseball, and that is exactly what the Cal Ripken, Sr.
foundation did. Their mission statement was as follows: "The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation helps to
build character and teach critical life lessons to at–risk young people living in America's most
distressed communities through baseball– and softball–themed programs" ("Mission"). During the
1995 season, Ripken had another encounter with yet another charity. In 1995, when Ripken broke
Lou Gehrig's record for most consecutive games played, Ripken and the Orioles decided to join
forces with the Lou Gehrig Fund. When Ripken broke the record, the Orioles' organization donated
two million dollars to John Hopkins Medical Institutions. That money was to be used to research
ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) to try to find a cure. Later that year, breakthrough technology was
found to slow the onset of the disease ("Fund"). Ripken was given a wonderful platform to help
people who were dealt tough situations. Cal took full advantage of his ability to help those in need.
He wanted to make a difference in this world, not just on the baseball field, and that was exactly
what he did. The final thing that Ripken excelled at during his career was racking up some gaudy
numbers. He was a force to be reckoned with on the baseball field. His most impressive stat was no

communities. We will also discuss some of the more famous players of the Negro Leagues as well
as take a look at what the impact of Jackie Robinson being the first African American to be signed to
a professional Major League team was and how it affected the future of baseball.
Black American men were banned from being able to play professional baseball from the early
1900's till the late 1940's. This sparked the creation of what was known as the Negro Leagues. The
first successful Negro League was formed in 1920 by Andrew "Rube" Foster (https://
negroleaguebaseball.com), but suspended operations in 1931 due to the financial hardships
associated with the Great Depression (Baseball: An Illustrated History, G. Ward, Page 87). As the
Great Depression ended and America got closer to WWII, the popularity of the Negro leagues grew.
The creation of the Negro National League and the Negro American League represented the two
premier Negro leagues in the 1930's and 1940's. They were just as organized as their white
counterparts. They played a 140 game schedule, had their own all–star games, as well as their own
World Series (Baseball: An Illustrated History, G. Ward, Page 247). The Negro leagues flourished
during WWII. The white players of the professional teams were being drafted and their

Charlotte was supposed to host the All Star Game during the 2017 season, but limitations on the
bathroom rights for transgender individuals caused the league to move the game to New Orleans.
While Silver would love to host the game in Charlotte, he does not plan on having the game playing
in North Carolina until this law is repealed. Silver also discussed travel bans created by President
Trump, as the NBA contains many international players. This article relates to the Invisible Man
because it discusses looking past differences to create unity. A major theme of Invisible Man is
individuality and being the unique individual a person is. An example of this is shown when the
narrator eats yams, as he does not allow society and its views of him eating yams to impact his
decisions. Likewise, the NBA looks for individuality and uniqueness from fans of the league and
players in the league. Likewise, Commissioner Silver's discussion of returning to Charlotte reflects
the change in a society's views, which is similar to the change in society the narrator is hoping

The Jackie Robinson
The mens baseball league was in trouble when World War II started. The fans of baseball and
citizens of the U.S. Did not like the idea of men getting paid to play baseball while loved ones sent
to war so a certain Philip Wrigley owner of wrigleys gum and the Chicago cubs didn't think baseball
would last. Shortly after Pearl Harbor got bombed by the Japanese and most of the male players
went off to serve our country. The league owner wanted to end baseball but president Franklin
Delano Roosevelt wrote a letter called the green light letter which stated that baseball was a great
cheap family recreation that took about 2 and a half hours. This letter also stated that baseball was
good for the economy giving people jobs and fun. The final item in the letter asked the judge to
extend night games so day shift workers could watch too. Philip Wrigley and three other men
Branch Rickey owner and president of the Brooklyn dodgers, Paul V. Harper Chicago attorney, and
Ken Sells the President of the league decided that if they wanted baseball to continue the women
would have to come play hard ball, but softball was already easily available so these four men set
out to find a way to convince girls to play baseball, so Wrigley and the other men decided to
combine the ideas of softball and baseball, they also decided to name the league the All–American
Girls Baseball League (AAGBBL) but later changed it to the ALL–American Girls Professional
Baseball League (AAGPBL)

The Importance Of Income For Professional Baseball Players
Research was made in order to persuade the readers of how professional baseball players in today's
society deserve the income they are receiving. Possessing the ability to play at a professional level is
what makes these men truly worthy of their income.
Considerable Income for Professional Baseball Players The average salary of a professional baseball
player has been increased substantially throughout the past decades; a player today makes
exceedingly more than they used to. Baseball is different from other sports due to the mental aspect
of the game making it one of the hardest sports as a professional athlete. The uphill battle to become
a professional at the sport of baseball is near impossible as talent is more frequent throughout the
globe. Some argue whether baseball is a beneficial career to the community as other professions
including firefighters, fireman, policeman, and nurses deserve the admiration more than a
professional baseball player. Good ball players are always in demand throughout the league. MLB
players are highly skilled athletes thus earning them the right to such a high income as they bring
value to the organization and have put in dedicated hours of hard work, dedication, and practice
throughout all levels of play.
Consistency is what makes an average player an all–star especially for Giancarlo Stanton of the
Miami Marlins. Giancarlo racked up 59 home runs in the 2017 season. In "The Case for Giancarlo
Stanton", by Dickey, Keith, and Kwak explain,

How Did Jackie Robinson Break The Color Barrier

  • 1. How Did Jackie Robinson Break The Color Barrier "The way I figured it, I was even with baseball and baseball with me. The game had done much for me, and I had done much for it." This influential quote was expressed by the late great Jackie Robinson. The man who broke the color barrier. An eminent man, Jackie displayed his true potential in baseball by excelling at the second base position. Jackie played in the Negro Leagues before debuting in the Major Leagues to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Over a century before this prominent event blacks and whites could play baseball together. Teams were brought about in several different ways. Nearly a century later, baseball became segregated. Blacks were forced to form their own leagues to continue to perform their passion of baseball. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Baseball's color barrier cracked on April 18, 1946 when Jackie Robinson, signed to the Dodgers organization by owner Branch Rickey, made his first appearance with the Montreal Royals in the International League. After a single season with Montreal, Robinson joined the parent club and helped propel the Dodgers to a National League pennant in 1947. In 1947, the reintegration of the baseball leagues started with the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson became the first 20th Century black baseball player allowed in the all–white professional leagues. When Jackie played his first Major League season and led the Dodgers to the National League pennant, he shattered the color barrier thus allowing black players in the all–white Major Leagues. Along the way he also earned National League Rookie Of The Year honors. P. Mills stated, "Robinson's success opened the floodgates for a steady stream of black players into organized baseball. Robinson was shortly joined in Brooklyn by Negro League stars Roy Campanella, Joe Black and Don Newcombe, and Larry Doby became the American League's first black star with the Cleveland Indians. By 1952 there were 150 black players in organized baseball, and the "cream of the crop" had been lured from Negro League rosters to the integrated minors and majors. During the four years immediately following Robinson's debut with the Dodgers virtually all of the Negro Leagues' best talent had either left the league for opportunities with integrated teams or had grown too old to attract the attention of major league scouts. With this sudden and dramatic departure of talent black team owners witnessed a financially devastating decline in attendance at Negro League games. The attention of black fans had forever turned to the integrated major leagues, and the handwriting was on the wall for the Negro Leagues." The signing of Robinson was soon followed by the signing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. What Is America's Pastime? Lets take a look into why I believe that baseball has not only followed in the footsteps our "Great Country", but is still "America's Pastime." Ask yourself, "is baseball our country's sport, has it not evolved with our great nation?" The answer is yes, for many reasons. Lets take a look back in history, "President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared, 'that all persons held as slaves' within the rebellious states 'are, and henceforward shall be free.' Despite this expansive wording, the Emancipation Proclamation was limited in many ways. It applied only to states that had seceded from the Union, leaving slavery untouched ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we look our United States history, it is very similar, as long as we acknowledge it and just accept it; it is our country and our sport. Look at baseball before 1900, our country was mostly on the east coast, where our settlers were, and they played the sport with out African Americans. Society was segregated, this was not a good thing, but it was how they lived. Once we moved on, from 1910 through 1930, our country was changing, there was a war going on overseas, labor talks and still some segregation. Baseball had its problems also; there was the "Black Sox scandal" (Ward, Baker, Burns, 2011, pg. 144) Baseball was trying to clean up its act, with some talks of players getting more money, so the unions played a role in society also. The middle class was having issues with unions and then the first strike within baseball was in 1912. It all boiled down to money, players were offered to come play in the "Federal League." WWI brought baseball together as our country was fighting overseas, the National Anthem was not created until 1931, but was first played at a baseball game by the band in the 1918 World Series. During the 7th inning stretch, they stroke up the song at Comiskey Park. The stretch, turning into every uncovered head turning to "Old Glory" and remembering our great nation, "it was then that 'Our Spangled Banner' would be an integral part the national pastime." (Ward, Baker, Burns, 2011, pg. 132) Lets fast forward and look at Hank Aaron, his career started in 1954 and ended in 1976, "if you are a baseball fan, you should know that Aaron was the player that broke Babe Ruth's career record of home runs." • 5. After Amazing Achievements, Derek Jeter is Set to Retire Derek Jeter has announced that after this upcoming 2014 season he will be retiring from the game of baseball. In honor of this decision I wanted to recognize some of his amazing achievements as a Yankee but also as a leader in the MLB. From an early age Derek Jeter was being scouted and projected to be a major league star. As a senior in high school, many professional teams including the Colorado Rockies scouted Jeter. A copy of the scouting report on Jeter says, "This guy is special. You get excited just watching him warm up. All– Star potential at MLB level." (Axisa, Mike, CBSSports.com). This was very high–level praise coming from an MLB scout when talking about a high school senior. Being as it may, Jeter was not drafted by the Rockies; the New York Yankees in the 1992 draft drafted him with the 6th overall pick. In his rookie year with the Yankees he won the AL Rookie of the Year award and the Yankees won their first world series in 18 years. This was the start of a very successful career for the Yankee great. Jeter has proven the scouting report to be truthful, becoming and MLB All–Star 13 times. He has been named All–Star game MVP once as well as American League MVP once, coincidently in the same year, 2000. Also, Jeter has won the Gold Glove 5 times and has won the American League Silver Slugger award 5 times. Possibly the most important statistic of Jeter's on the field career is that he and his team have won 5 World Series Championships together over the span ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Mike Trout In Major League Baseball Major League Baseball has customarily shunned the idea of too much focus on individual player limelight. America's pastime has prided itself on being the penultimate team sport. There has been a burgeoning conversation over which player might warrant the moniker as the face of Major League Baseball. The debate whirls around in circles, with as many as two–dozen names receiving mention. However, these three players surface on every list as the worthy face of the game. Mike Trout There isn't a top 100 list posted, which doesn't have the name Mike Trout on it. Trout is either the top player, or at the very least, one of the top 3 stars on every ranking. Since youth is well served as a candidate for the new face of Major League Baseball, no list should omit the Chicago Cub third baseman Kris Bryant from consideration. Bryant had an inauspicious first game in April 2015, going 0 for 4 with three whiffs at the plate. The 25–year–old heir apparent as the most recognized face in pro baseball hasn't looked back. Bryant put up Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, following that with a National League Most Valuable Player Award in his second full season. • 9. The Game Of Baseball : What Makes A True Role Model For Kids? The game of Baseball At the age of 6, I began to understand Americas greatest past time. I was a very ambitious boy who wanted to look up to professional baseball players. Above all, I especially grew very fond of Oakland Athletics 1st baseman Mark McGwire. I truly believed that his character was unmatched as he performed at a very high level. He always seemed to be very collected in his approach. One of the so called "bash brothers of baseball" Mark was a gifted individual that people began to admire on and off the baseball field. That to me is what makes a true role model for kids. 49 homeruns made him an immediate star as a rookie. Mark holds the best homerun ratio for every 10.61 at bats, just ahead of Babe Ruth. This great player, whom played for team USA, before entering the major leagues. Had a career that stemmed from 1986–2001. Mark McGwire finished his career with 583 homeruns. Played for two different teams, including 11 years in Oakland and 5 years in St. Louis. Mark was also a 12 time all–star, 2 time World Series champion, AL rookie of the year, 5 time homerun leader, and many other league leading awards. In any event whether you are a fan or not, 1998 seemed to be a year of true excitement. Stamped in the back of my mind as the best year in baseball. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs were in a heated battle to become baseball's all–time homerun king as they both were chasing a long standing record set by Roger Maris. Roger had ... Pro Sports Athletes Should Not Be Banned As those who really follow and know baseball may know, "Since sports have been around, the competitive nature of athletes has been pushed to the brink. As the times have changed, so have the ways athletes go about in pursuing their competitive drive" ("Juicin' In The", 2013). Baseball has been around for well over a century and so have Performance Enhancement Drugs. "PEDs can be traced all the way back to 1889, when Pud Galvin, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (which eventually became the Pittsburgh Pirates), used Brown–Sequard Elixir" ("Juicin' In The", 2013). The truth is that over the last 20 to 30 years, these substances have benn ruining the game of baseball, but most importantly, they are staining the purity of the game. The essence of the game is that the game is that all players should be able to play the game they love on an even playing field. On the Business side of things, the casual fan of the game do not care about MLB players using PEDs. They watch the game because is entertaining. With that said, the better the entertainment, the more they watch and the more games they attend. Therefore, the more money the league, the teams, and the players make. "A huge part of watching sports is witnessing the very peak of human athletic ability, and legalizing performance enhancing drugs would help athletes climb even higher" ("Why It 's Time", 2012). • 15. Jackie Robinson And The Baseball Jackie Robinson did not only help initiate the integration of the game of baseball, but he also helped initiate integration throughout America. The film Soul of the Game does not go into all of the details regarding his career on the Brooklyn Dodgers, but rather it depicts his life and choices leading up to his career in the Major Leagues. This film portrays important themes such as segregation, perseverance, and doubt, and it applies to history in the beginning of the story of Jackie Robinson and how America has gotten to where it is now. Although the court case of Plessy v. Ferguson declared segregation to be legal as long as things were equal in 1896, baseball had already done this about ten years prior. There was a creation of the Negro League in the 1920s through the 1940s so that African Americans could have the same opportunities and white players even though they were not allowed on any of the major league teams. Jackie Robinson was a rookie player on the Kansas City Monarchs, a Negro League team, and being along side Satchel Paige, no one even noticed who he was. According to the reading in Jackie Robinson and Race in America by Thomas Zeiler, Satchel Paige was the first negro player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and he possibly believed to be one of the best pitchers of all time. Another comrade of Robinson's during his time in the Negro League would be Josh Gibson, one of the greatest catchers and hitters of all time. The owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, ... Baseball has always been "America's Pastime"– making it the greatest sport to be played. Four cases come to mind to prove that baseball is a cut above all other sports. Baseball is superior over all other sports because of the food. All baseball fanatics know that the concessions are a must, every time they visit the ballpark. In 2013, there were 20,421,361 ballpark franks sold at stadiums around the MLB. The hot dogs aren't the only attraction, though. For example, the famous chili cheese nachos at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati or the carne asada fries for the Padres. As it turns out, they had helped me to throw out the pitch. When I won the tickets to the game, that was because of my perfect attendance. The first pitch, however, was a separate competition, between me and the kids from other schools who had won tickets. Teachers and coaches had to write something about their student and send it in for the chance to win the chance at the first pitch, and my two baseball coaches had done just that. Not only them, but the secretary and Mrs. Armstrong both wrote in as well. It's because of them that I got the opportunity. Jackie Robinson debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 and became the first African American major league baseball player of the modern era. Jackie Robinson spent one season with the Montreal Royals before called up to the big league club, the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie's impact was felt immediately and he was one of the reasons why the Dodgers captured the pennant. He also won the Rookie of the Year award. Jackie Robinson received death threats and had to endure racial slurs during every game. Jackie had to "turn the other cheek" as Mr. Branch Rickey put it because if Jackie would retaliate then the black integration movement would be rejected completely by Major League Baseball because they would that African Americans lack of self control would endanger the game. It probably was because her side of the family seemed to compile an interesting set of baseball junkies, her even playing for Team USA Softball one summer, and my god–father (her brother) garnering tons of scholarship offers and major league try–outs for his work on the mound. Baseball just was in me. Something that was organic, fun, and exhilarating. For the most part, I excelled from the start. However, just as baseball played an innocent childhood role in my life, it also presented me with one of the biggest life lessons that I have experienced. From early one, I was a standout in baseball. From ages 8–13, I made the league's travel all–star team. Being the only black kid and the only one in public school, I often found myself sometimes out of my comfort zone when it came to hanging out with the team. Generally, the team consisted of the same players and coaches every year, so the faces rarely, if ever, changed. As we got older, things began to change. I eventually found myself on the pitching mound for my respective league teams starting at age 10. Now, not to toot my own horn, but I was hands down one of the better pitcher's considering that I was younger than many of my fellow peers. • 33. The Pros And Cons Of Steroids In Major League Baseball In Major League Baseball, numerous players have put up tremendous statistics and record breaking numbers. There are a great amount of players in the league that have done this naturally, however it is not uncommon to see star players get caught taking performance enhancing drugs or steroids. Steroid use in baseball has been an issue since the earliest days of the game, and can be seen very frequently in players today. Jose Canseco was a star hitter in the major leagues, who had admitted to steroid later in his career. Canseco once estimated that 85% of other players were also taking performance enhancing drugs. Though that estimate is not proven, there are still many players today that are taking these steroids, and it needs to remain an issue in the eyes of the MLB. Taking these drugs not only promotes the risk of significant side effects and health problems to the player consuming them, but it makes changes to the game itself as well. The way the game is being played has changed over time due to this issue, and players are receiving advantages that other players are not. Overall, these illegal drugs are unfair to other players in the game and simply are not safe, and should never become legal in the league. Throughout the history of major league baseball we have seen countless astonishing hitters come pass through, some putting up record breaking numbers, at times too good to be true. Barry Bonds, known as the "homerun king" was able to put up an amazing total of 73 home runs in 2001. The very next season, he continued to present his skill with a .370 batting average. Between 1999 and 2007, Bonds' stats were shocking, hitting 351 home runs, winning four national league MVP awards, and racking up 780 RBI's, 69 stolen bases, and just over one thousand hits. Alex Rodriguez, better known as "A–rod" is another huge name when talking about the greatest hitters in baseball. For nine seasons out of Rodriguez's twenty two season career, 8.5% of the balls he would put into play were home runs. By the end of his lengthy career, he was able to collect 698 home runs, over two thousand RBI's and runs scored, with over three thousand hits. He was also named All–Star fourteen times. Another trait I've had for as long as I can remember is the need to have everything organized. Once I was old enough I volunteered for the MLB All–Star Game and saw how I could merge my two passions and turn them into a career. Having the title of event planner and being able to coordinate events that bring so many people with the same love of a game together is an ideal job for me. I want to be the one in charge of culminating the ideas for events that get people excited about sports. The position I hope to hold at the peak of my career is the Director of Gameday Entertainment and Special Events for the New Orleans Saints. The New Orleans Saints franchise has an incredible reputation. They are well known for how much they give back to the community not only in Louisiana but other areas of the country as well. The owner of the company was a major contributor to the rebuilding of the city after it was demolished by Hurricane Katrina. He cares about the people of the city and is continuously donating money to various charities and encouraging business owners to help build up the local economy. As founder of the company, Chambers envisioned a spa of full–time specialists who would serve as personal wellness coaches (2). She wanted clients to be able to experience high quality luxurious spa visits, without worrying about the high costs associated with recurring appointments. The idea and business model originally created, matched what the global market and people wanted for spa services. People liked the idea of a personal wellness coach. However, getting customers was not the problem. When hiring staff to fill these PWC positions, Chambers mentioned that the tips would be a large part of their annual salary. Chambers also mentioned that most people tip twenty–five percent. Attracting salaried personal wellness coaches for ARISE was a big step, as most spas are contract work. ARISE offers favorable benefits along with a luxurious place to perform spa treatments. However, after two years of being in practice and the All–Star Team Plan was implemented, customers tip thirty percent less than what was originally told upon hire by Chambers. PWC salary is thirty percent lower then what was expected. Because of this, a PWCs commitment to stay is questionable, and their perceived organizational support is low. Low perceived ... Racism and "Jim Crow" laws encouraged segregation of African–Americans and whites. Arguably, the players on the negro baseball leagues were some of the best ever. Even today they are still being recognized and honored for their wonderful contribution to baseball as a whole. It started when major league owners had made a "gentleman's agreement" to keep blacks from playing in the game. The barrier that went up was finally broken with a few black players being signed into white teams in the 1940s. It was once said by Martin Luther King Jr., "[Segregation] gives the segregator a false sense of superiority, it gives the segregated a false sense of inferiority." While that is true of ...
