3. INTRODUCTION
• In today’s era, the use of herbal medicines become popular
worldwide. An herbal cosmetic have growing demand in the
world market .
• Herbal formulations always have attracted considerable
attention because of their good activity and comparatively
lesser or nil side effects.
• “Creams are defines as a semisolid dosage form containing
one or more drug substance dissolve or dispersed in a suitable
base”
• A Cream is a Topical Preparation usually for application to the
skin, these are either (o/w) or (w/o) type .
4. What is herbal cream?
Herbal cosmetics are defined as the beauty products which
posses desirable physiological activity such as healing,
smoothing appearance, enhancing and conditioning properties
because of herbal ingredient.
A herbal cream that can give effective protection to skin and
free from any toxicity or toxic residue or any irritation when
regularly used and should also be cosmetically acceptable
5. AIM
To develop a herbal cream which can give
multipurpose effect, like moisturizer, reduce acne and
skin irritation, reduce skin diseases like eczema,
psoriasis, wrinkles, rashes etc. and also adding glow to
the face.
• To set a formula for herbal cream by using different
herbs.
• To evaluate formulated product by using different
tests.
OBJECTIVES
6. MAIN HERBAL CONSTITUENTS :
1) Aloe Vera:
Synonyms: Musabar, Ghrit-Kumari
Family: liliaceae
Chemical constituents: Aloin, barbaloin, Isobarbaloin & Resine.
Parts used: Leaf gel
8. MATERIALS AND METHODS :
Ingredients Quantities Roles
Aloe Vera gel 0.8ml Anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory,
moisturizer, reduce acne and
pimples.
Bees wax 1.5gm Give thickness and increase the
water holding capacity of the cream
Liquid paraffin 5ml Lubricating agent
Borax 0.5gm Emulsifier, buffering agent and
preservative
Turmeric extract 1ml anti-inflammatory ,Cures acne,
Reduce dark circles
,Could help psoriasis, eczema
wound healing
Ethanol (15ml) Solvent
Rose oil q.s. Fragrance
Total: 10gm
9. FORMULATION OF HERBAL MULTIPURPOSE CREAM:
1) PREPARATION OF HERBAL EXTRACT :
Turmeric extract:
Aloe-vera extract:
• Collect mature and fresh aloe-vera
leaf from plant and washed it with
distilled water. Dried it properly
• The semi-solid aloe-vera is collected.
Remove fibers and impurities form it.
Aloe-vera extract is obtained
• Take 1 g turmeric powder in
10 ml distilled water
• Heated in water bath at
80°C to 100°C for 5 to 10 min
Then filtered it
10. 2) PREPARATION OF CREAM :
1) Heat liquid paraffin and beeswax in a beaker and maintain
that heating temperature.
2) In another beaker, dissolve borax in distilled water and heat
this beaker to 75 ℃ .
3) Then slowly add this aqueous phase to heated oily phase .
4)Then add a measured amount of aloe Vera gel, Turmeric
extract and stir vigorously until it forms a smooth cream.
5) Then add few drops of rose oil as a fragrance. Put this
cream in mortor and pestle to give a smooth texture to the
cream and to mix all the ingredients properly.
6) Cream is ready for Evaluation tests
11. Evaluation of Formulated Herbal cream:
(a) Physical examination :
Figure 1: Physical Examination of cream
• Formulated cream was evaluated for its colour, odour, taste,
smoothness, relative density.
• Results showed that the cream and both gels had a cosmetically
appealing appearance and smooth texture, and they were all
homogenous with no signs of phase separation
12. (b) pH determination:
Figure 2: The pH Meter
pH of formulated herbal cream was determined by
using pH meter. 0.5 g cream was taken and dispersed in
50 ml distilled water and then PH was measured by
using digital PH meter
13. (c) Spreadability:
Figure 3: Spreadability Test
The spreadability was expressed in terms of time in seconds taken by
two slides to slip off from the cream, placed in between the slides,
under certain load.
Lesser the time taken for separation of the two slides better the
spreadability.
Then a weight or certain load was placed on the upper slide so that the
cream between the two slides was pressed uniformly to form a thin
layer.
Spread ability= m × l/t
Where,
m= Standard weight which is tied to or placed over the upper slide (10g)
l= length of a glass slide (7.5cm)
t= time taken in seconds(7sec)
14. d) Phase separation:
• Prepared cream was kept in a closed container at a
temperature of 25-100 ℃ .
• Then phase separation was checked for 24 h for 30 d.
Any change in the phase separation was
observed/checked.
• According to the results no phase separation was
observed in formulations.
e) Wash ability:
Wash ability test was carried out by applying a
small amount of cream on the hand and then washing it
with help of tap water. formulation were easily
washable.
17. (b) Evaluation Test:
Table 6: Evaluation of Herbal Cream
Parameters Observ0ation
Parameters Standard Value Observation
pH 4.5-6 5.8
Spreadability 8.50-11.50 10.71
Viscosity 1000-7000lcp 119lcP
Washability Good Easily Washable
Phase Separation - No Phase Separation
18. CONCLUSION
• From above project we can conclude By using Aloe
Vera gel and Turmeric the cream showed a
multipurpose effect and all these herbal ingredients
showed significant different activities. Based on results
and discussion, the formulation were stable at room
temperature and can be safely used on the skin.
• It has best properties and having nutritional values
using less chemical which protects the skin from the
various skin problem. Since the cream was prepared by
using simple ingredients and simple method so the
cream is also economical.
• Natural remedies are more acceptable in the belief
that they are safer with fewer side effects than the
synthetic ones.
