The presentation contains the stepwise procedure to conduct chi square test of independence or test of association using IBM SPSS.

1. Chi-square Test of Independence or Test of
Association

2. Data View
Data view represents the
cases/data points for
different variables.

3. Variable View
Variable view represents the
properties of all variables.
One can toggle between
data and variable view with
the shortcut ctrl + t.

4. Step 1
Selecting Procedure:
Go to the Analyze tab in
Menu bar, click on
Descriptive statistics option
and select crosstab.

5. Step 2
Select the
categorical variables
and drag to the
Row(s) and
Column(s) boxes.
(according to how
you want to see
results)
Info: For this sample of data we do not
need to weight the cases because SPSS
can calculate frequency by itself for this
form of data.

6. Step 3
Click on the statistics
button to select the
desired statistics.

7. Step 4
Select Chi square and click
continue to process.

8. Step 5
Click on Cells button
to open the Crosstab:
Cell Display dialog
box.

9. Step 6
Select observed in the count
box and Row, column and
total in Percentage box.

10. Step 7
Select Display
clustered bar chart
and click Ok to get
the Output with
Results.

11. Summary Table
This table displays
the summary about
the Valid and
Missing cases in the
Dataset.

12. Cross tabulation
This table
displays the cross
tabulation of two
or more
Categorical
Variables with
the percentage
of cases in each
subgroup.

13. Chi square Test of Independence
This table displays
Pearson Chi square
statistic with its
associated df and
significance value.

14. Bar Chart
This bar chart
displays the
comparison of two
categories in
graphical form.
