DC motors provide excellent control of speed for
acceleration and deceleration. The power supply of a DC
motor connects directly to the field of the motor which
allows for precise voltage control, which is necessary for
speed, position and torque control applications.
The main aim of this project is to design dc motors remote
control with feedback based on the zigbee protocol, with
the following objectives
 Designing the remote section and the monitoring and
control section
 Programming the controllers in the remote as well as the
control and monitoring section.
 Configuring the xbee modules, one as the network
coordinator and the other as end device/router
 The control of machines and processes as well as the data
accessibility in some areas in some industries like nuclear,
chemical etc, become problematic. This project can serve to
minimized or completely eliminate those hazards by
providing the wireless option in controlling those machine
as well as allowing the access to data in those areas.
 There are two microcontrollers in this system
 one is located in the control and monitoring section, and
the other is at the remote location.
In order to operate the motors in the remote location from the
control section, the control panel containing the control
keys are used. as can be describe as follow
 The control key is pressed from the control panel
 The key is then detected by the microcontroller in the
control section.
 The microcontroller encoded the command and send it to
the zigbee module configure as network coordinator
using UART protocol
 The zigbee module is then transmitted this command to
the remote location.
 Another zigbee in the remote location which is configure
as router/end device received this command, and then
send it to the remote controller also using UART protocol
 The remote controller then decodes the command and translates
it into motors rotation.
 there is encoder attached to each motor, which produce pulses
with the rotation of the motor
 This pulses is then fed to the frequency to voltage converter
which convert it to voltage and then the voltage is fed back to
the microcontroller
 When any motor failed, then there will be no pulses
produce by the encoder attached to that motor
 This technique is used to detect the failure of any of the
motor and transmit to the control section for monitoring
purpose
There are total of seven different control keys in the
control panel with each having specific control
command, below is the control table
It is observed that at starting up, if any of the motors is
having failure, this failure is not immediately detected, it
is detected only when the next command is send but after
that, the system continue to operate as desired. The
following assumption was made while designing this
system.
 The failure of any of the motor or motors is/are detected
only when that motor or motors is/are rotating. This
means that:
 If any or all motors is/are not commanded, it failure
cannot be detected, hence that motor/motors is/are
 Assume to be in good condition, therefore good condition
will be the feedback status.
Below is the complete circuit diagram of this project
Applications of high performance DC motor drives in area
such as rolling mills, chemical process, electric trains,
robotic manipulators and the home electric appliances
require direction and speed control to perform tasks. DC
motors have direction and a speed control capability,
which means that speed and direction of rotation can be
changed at anytime to meet new condition.

Zigbee based dc motors remote monitoring and control

  • 2. DC motors provide excellent control of speed for acceleration and deceleration. The power supply of a DC motor connects directly to the field of the motor which allows for precise voltage control, which is necessary for speed, position and torque control applications.
  • 3. The main aim of this project is to design dc motors remote control with feedback based on the zigbee protocol, with the following objectives  Designing the remote section and the monitoring and control section
  • 4.  Programming the controllers in the remote as well as the control and monitoring section.  Configuring the xbee modules, one as the network coordinator and the other as end device/router
  • 5.  The control of machines and processes as well as the data accessibility in some areas in some industries like nuclear, chemical etc, become problematic. This project can serve to minimized or completely eliminate those hazards by providing the wireless option in controlling those machine as well as allowing the access to data in those areas.
  • 6.  There are two microcontrollers in this system  one is located in the control and monitoring section, and the other is at the remote location. In order to operate the motors in the remote location from the control section, the control panel containing the control keys are used. as can be describe as follow
  • 7.  The control key is pressed from the control panel  The key is then detected by the microcontroller in the control section.  The microcontroller encoded the command and send it to the zigbee module configure as network coordinator using UART protocol
  • 8.  The zigbee module is then transmitted this command to the remote location.  Another zigbee in the remote location which is configure as router/end device received this command, and then send it to the remote controller also using UART protocol
  • 9.  The remote controller then decodes the command and translates it into motors rotation.  there is encoder attached to each motor, which produce pulses with the rotation of the motor  This pulses is then fed to the frequency to voltage converter which convert it to voltage and then the voltage is fed back to the microcontroller
  • 10.  When any motor failed, then there will be no pulses produce by the encoder attached to that motor  This technique is used to detect the failure of any of the motor and transmit to the control section for monitoring purpose

  • 12. There are total of seven different control keys in the control panel with each having specific control command, below is the control table
  • 13. It is observed that at starting up, if any of the motors is having failure, this failure is not immediately detected, it is detected only when the next command is send but after that, the system continue to operate as desired. The following assumption was made while designing this system.
  • 14.  The failure of any of the motor or motors is/are detected only when that motor or motors is/are rotating. This means that:  If any or all motors is/are not commanded, it failure cannot be detected, hence that motor/motors is/are  Assume to be in good condition, therefore good condition will be the feedback status. Below is the complete circuit diagram of this project

Applications of high performance DC motor drives in area such as rolling mills, chemical process, electric trains, robotic manipulators and the home electric appliances require direction and speed control to perform tasks. DC motors have direction and a speed control capability, which means that speed and direction of rotation can be changed at anytime to meet new condition.
