Uses And Gratification theory
Blumler & Katz, 1974
• Uses and Gratification theory is a well
established theory in how consumers use
media. It states that consumers actively
interpret and integrate media into their own
lives, to for fill there specific gratifications.
The four main needs
• Diversion
When the consumer uses the media to retreat from the physical world and the
stressors in it and to relax .
• Personal Identity
Consumers use the media to for fill there own self discovery by relating to the media
and relating to people representations and taking using to shape themselves on the
media heads.
• Personal Relations
People use the media to fulfil their needs for companionship and to form new, and
maintain relationships with others.
• Surveillance
Using media to build knowledge of what is currently going on and build self awareness
of the world. Such as reading the news paper.
• Diversion
RWD magazine gives the consumer the chance to break away
from day to day life and submerge themselves into the
magazine with the central image of Chipmunk and him
thinking and the cover lines at the bottom drawing the reader
in to his journey as an artist and let them dream about what it
is like to be him.
Personal Identity
The magazine directly appeals to the reader saying ‘us’ the
reader is part of the magazine and asking question while
multiple answer to help the reader identify. Also the tattoos
audience can to relate to will entice more people to read the
magazine
Personal Relation
Magazine have social media such as Facebook and twitter
where they can find online friends and have completion and
have articles that make them talk to people. Al
Surveillence
Allowed the individuals to get the latest celebrity loves about
chipmunk then has a list of celbries on the bottom left hand
side and about new products that are being release Nintendo
3ds and says it is a denim special which looks at fashion and
that is a trend that is coming.
Music Magazine analysis
• There is a small amount of text used making the central image
the main focus of the cover, direct mode of address with a list
of artist featured artist down one side.
• They have encouraged the colour scheme of the image with
text text.
• the central image is set in front of the mast head to add
dimensions to the cover with the res of the text placed in front
• They have used the same colour text for the mast head as the
plug of Nicki Minaj which is one of the main feature as using
the same colour gives connotations of important as it’s the
only other text on the page with the same colour. Also it is set
away from the rest of the list of artist which also shows its
important’s it is positions on the eye line of Skepta which will
draw the audience to look at it because the central image
using direct eye contact to draw in audience.
• The font size they use larger fonts on the most important
words such as Skepta Minaj which allows the reader to
immediately see what is available in the issue.
• He is wearing his diamond chain which is the name of his
group this is used to reach to both a male and female
audience as it ads sex appeal to him as it connotes wealth and
to people who know who is shows who he represents and
works as advertisement for the group as people who are
unaware who ‘boybetterknow’ are will likely read on to see
what it is about for surveillance.
• This cover of rwd they have change the the
conventions to resemble that of a tabloid news paper
which directly relates to the plug ‘the man behind
the headlines..’ the use of the full stops shows the
reader there is more to read aboiut this.
• The central image there is news paper cut outs
which depict the ‘headlines’ that have been written
about him he is in front of them casting a shadow on
them as if it a metaphore for him putting the
headlines behind him.
• He is opening his jacket to reavel his tshirt whis has
bad writen on it and a lil boy with a gun and sun
glasses which is a juxtaposion as the little boy is
branded as bad but he remains inoseenty as he just a
lil boy where as dappy is branded as bad and the lable
has stuck with the negative press he has received,
which connotes that maybe the headlines only say
half of the story.
• They have mad the list at the top of the page of in this
isue to not interfear with the power of the central
image.
• Again they have put the plugs in front of the image
adding diamention along whi him being set in front of
the rwd masthead.
• They are making an attack on the sun as they have
used there colour scheme and put a ‘the’ at the top of
the mast head to resemble it.
• They have used the same colours from the artist
outfit on the miso scenes.
• This issue of xxl is simple but affective the
central image is a close up of jay z face.
Whith sun glasses on they have made the
image reflect the coverline return of the
hustle by putting a refletion of a city sky
line at night and a mercedies infore
ground.
• They used the same black and gold colour
scheme in the image in the text on the
page.
• The sunglasses and chain show welth and
apeals to the target audience of young
males which aspire to have the wealth and
succsece that jay z has and shows the
roots of his succese began in the city
hustling where the target audience ar.
• Above the mast head there is the cover
line a decade of dominance because Jay Z
has been dominand over past 10 years
and links the photo with the plugs.
• The image is sey with lighing from the right
hand side creating a shadow which give
connotations of importants or on other
hand it enhances the titles as could be
sign the spot light of fame but he still with
his roots of the streats.
• The JAY-Z| has a whit outline with
transparnt centre which give conoation
that he is transpart which conote honesty
and the artcle on him will be truth ful.
The conventions of rwd have remained the same
with this issue with the addition of a cover line
listing the what else the magazine has to offer
music ‘style sport film news’ they have made it
stand out using a white back ground with black
text and alternating between bold font and
regular. This is used to approach the target
audience as this issue has a woman on the front
rather than a male model which some readers
may not no who she is.
But they have tackled this by putting her name
in front of her centrally on her figure as threat
iswwhere many reader will look because she is a
woman and the target audience is male
dominate. But this issue will appeal to a more
female audience, because the central image it
of a female.
This particular issue is the versus issue which is a
sub brand of Versace and cheaper than the main
brand which is a mode of address as the
audience most likely cant afford the main brand
and will be intrigued.
They have set a black V behind her to enhance
the point that is the Versus edition.
They have used soft lighting which connotes
femininty and innocence .
This issue is very diversion as she is UK artist but
she isn't well known in urban music.
• The colour scheme is black grey with a hint
of blue which is reflected in the outfit. The
tag line is number 1 on tips for 2012 so for
regular readers can who have followed there
count down of artist that they think are going
to be big in 2012 . Unlike the usual
convention of having the central image in
front of the mast head she is underneath it.
The image reflect the tag line has the spot
light is on her she looking up like she
stepping up to their prediction.
• Also the spot light make her stand out as
thye back ground it partly illuminated and
her clothes are dark adding dimension.
• All the text is the same greay and black with
emeli sande’ in bold caps white text drawing
the attention the the audience.
• Like with the versus cover they have the
band at the top with the section titles to
appeal to the Audience that is younger
gaming tech. but also to more people such as
fans of Emile Sande who may not read the
magazine .
Front cover analysis evaluation
• From my analysis of front covers I have learnt that a dominate central image is crucial to the
magazine desirability. It has to be potent and draw the reader in through direct eye contact and the
model should be dressed simple but effective outfit that fits current fashion trends making them
desirable to the target audience. The pose of the artist in the central image should reflect their
personality and their music such as the ‘Dappy’ cover of RWDmagazine where the whole style of
front cover was change from it conventions to that of a tabloid news paper to reflect the image and
the cover line ‘behind the headlines’. I shall use this adaptation in my magazine to show the artist
personality as it will be an unknown up and coming artist.
• To complement the image I should have simple small amount of text and using clear font and bold
for main wording to draw the reader in. it should involve all areas of the magazine so it appeals to
a wider audience, such as a banner of topics such as games, fashion, gossip, at the top showing
what the magazine has to offer as it is not a recognised brand yet as RWD magazine did in it earlier
edition and the one of Emile Sande .
• Also the colour scheme should be kept simple using 3 colours that compliment but are contrasting
so different colour can be used to have the correct connotations such as black white and a third
bright one
• The mast head is going to be the title of the magazine and should stand out and have a slight
overlap with the central image to make the image pop out of the page.
• Fonts should be kept the same and plain and bold to read .
This is the contents of an issue of Vibe magazine. This
red background used on this page compliments the
main image but contrasts the white text, the big ‘V’ is
used to promote the magazines name subtly. The
header is displayed in an abstract way which is
appealing to the eye of the target audience. The
features listed on the left hand side are positioned in
list form making it easily read and understood with the
headers slightly bolder than the sub text. The
magazines logo and date are top right; this is black with
white outlines separating it from the other text on this
page. The image used on this page is of a well known
rap artist Plies, the cap on backwards, shirt off showing
his tattoos and intentional focus on his jewellery and
grills are all symbols of wealth, success and the hip hop
lifestyle. The publishers have used the rap artists arm
to interrupt the text separating the features from the
fashion section. Although text has been placed over
the images arm his hat overlays the ‘T’ of the contents
header bringing the artist forward as the main focus of
the page.
• This contents page is from RWD Magazine. The
background is a black and white brick wall; these
colours are continued with the featured artist’s
symmetrical clothing. Black and white is effective
here as it is simple yet classic and emphasises the
blue highlighted sub text. Although the pictured
artist is shown full length, her head down and
passive body language, knees and hands in etc.
show vulnerability and does not demand the
readers full attention. The main contents header is
positioned to the left in white with the issue
number directly below, this is practical and the
audience can immediately understand the purpose
of the page. The headers listed within the contents
are coloured differently giving each section its own
individuality and making them stand out with the
sub text white and highlighted in blue giving it an
edgy unique style reflecting the magazines target
audience which is people aged 15-25.
• This is the contents page of RWD Magazine.
This contents page is set out in four sections
with thin black lines; this enables the
publisher to separate the page into four mini
contents pages, with four different pictures
relating to each part of the magazine it
reaches out to a wider audience. A full white
background works well with such colourful
pictures and text and is the most effective
choice for a page layout as this. The sub
headers are in different colours with matching
blocks of colour above, adding to the
separation aspect but using the same font
integrates them as one and avoids a ‘mix and
match’ page and confusing the reader. Each
image only has one person but each relating
to different topics again to appeal to a varied
audience using the uses of gratification
theory, Diversion, Personal identity, relations
and Surveillance.

This contents page is from The Source Magazine.
The audience is immediately confronted by a full
page portrait of the hip hop artist, Big Pun, this
type of close up image shows confidence and a
metaphorical ‘in your face’ attitude, backing up
the common hip hop music persona. The term
‘departments’ is used as opposed to contents
giving a larger more structured and organised
feel. Each feature is listed in yellow capital
letters, coinciding with the magazines colour
scheme, and sub text in white to separate the
two. The magazines logo is placed over the
artists hat and outlined in white to make it stand
out and cover the name brand label, maybe
suggesting authority and importance.
From my analysis of content pages I have learnt that its is a common
convention to have the page split half image or images and half text. I
will use this in my own magazine by using my featured artist as I have
seen in all majority or the magazine the artist featured on front cover
is on the contents page apart from the exection of one of the RWD
magazine. Although they all use mid shots or full body when it is just
one image I think I shall use a close up as to entice the audience to
read on using a quote from the artist in the image.
I have also learnt that they only use a few artcle that of the big artist in
the contents page and use varation on font size for titles of the
sections and colour code them to difriensiate between the. I am going
to encorprat this into mine using the block line to separate the
different sections of the magazine.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS
This DPS is from XXL Magazine. The
header of this article immediately catches
the audience’s attention, the big bold and
black letters are uniquely repeated below
upside down and back to front, with
smaller text between the larger words
drawing the reader’s eye in to read. The
oversized ‘T’ starting the first sentence of
the article also stands out as it’s so much
larger than the rest of the text and is
powerful against the white background,
this attracts the audience to read on. The
full length picture of the artist, Rick Ross,
says a lot about the article, the balloons
faded in the back ground along with the
artist holding a champagne bottle and
glass shouts out celebration. The artist is
wearing a tuxedo which also follows this
theme, although no bow tie is worn, this
shows originality with a feeling of a
rebellious yet laid back attitude. The gold
bottle, rings and sun glasses reflect
success and wealth, which are common
occurrences within the hip hop music
industry. No page number has been
printed on this page increasing desirability
for a pull out and the black and white
colour scheme is simple, classic and very
effective.
• This DPS is from RWD Magazine. This article is
continued from the front cover, the blue and red
colour scheme is also continued as this is the
feature article. Although the page number is
shown on the full length picture no other text is
shown, making this desirable as a pull out. The
picture itself shows Skepta, the featured artist, with
his hood up looking directly at the audience with a
serious expression; this reflects his street/grime
music career. The picture also shows part of the
artists eagle tattoo above his shirt, this tattoo is
stating he is a proud Nigerian as well as depicting
power and pride. The white text stands out well
against the blue background with a quote from the
artist in bigger font and in red, this catches the
readers eye and as this quote is humorous is
intrigues the audience to read on. The smaller
picture also shows a serious expression with Skepta
holding up a chain which reads “BOY BETTER
KNOW”, the big chain not only promotes the slogan
of a collective of artists but symbolises pride,
wealth and success. The smaller article on this DPS
is also in white but against a red background
separating it from the main article but causing it to
stand out just as much. In this piece the use of the
term ‘skeptaisms’ shows the reader that the
following article is light hearted and personal to the
artist and his lyrics.
• This DPS is from Vibe Magazine. This
example has a full length picture on both
pages with minimal text. This layout is
effective as the text itself speaks directly
to the reader, asking questions about the
sports star featured, Usain Bolt, and
encourages the audience to read on for
answers. The pictures them self, although
both the same size and background, are
showing two very different things, the first
picture with Bolt looking towards the sky,
hands together yet relaxed show the stars
ambitions and dreams to aim higher. The
lighting emphasises his veins and muscles
symbolising strength and the ‘Bolt’ T-shirt
shows pride and self recognition. The
second picture shows Usain Bolt with a
much more determined look hands
together again but raised here showing
preparation. Top left shows the 2012
Olympics logo and colours, not only does
this allow the audience to immediately
see this is a sporting star but also
promotes the event subtly. The use of
white bold lettering across both pictures
works well against the featured stars
clothing. Big, even, capital letters stating
the word ‘BOLT’ strikes the audience
immediately not only as it is the
sportsman’s name but it’s a strong
powerful word.
This DPS is from XXL Magazine. The story involves both 50
cent and Souja Boy, both well-known artists in the
American hip hop music industry. When opening this page
the audience is immediately drawn in by the full length
picture of both artists, no page number or captions are on
this picture making it more desirable for mounting as a
poster. The picture itself shows 50 cent stood behind Soulja
Boy dressed all in black, this shows a protective body guard
type image, a literal take on the phrase ‘I’ve got your back’,
with Soulja Boy standing in front, his arms raised and hands
open showing confidence security as well as freedom.
Soulja Boy is dressed much more casually in designer
clothes with this jewellery on display, showing his wealth
along with the hip hop lifestyle. The grey background
makes both artists stand out. The header of this article is a
quote and shown in a big black font, using this as a header
shows aggression with the obscenities toned down by
asterisks, the reader gets an idea of exactly what the article
contains and encourages them to read on where all is
explained in detail. The grey newspaper type background
of the article is simple yet effective as it gives a top news
story image.
• This DPS is from RWD Magazine. The
audience would first be drawn to the
header reading “from rags to riches” in
bold varied sized letters, the reader
immediately associates the words and
font with a ‘street’ type story of success,
this is backed up with the full length
picture shown on the left hand page. This
shows a well-known British grime artist
Dizzee Rascal against a graffiti covered
wall with spray can in hand, The
background is continued onto the second
page but faded to make the article more
easily read, the bright colours of both the
background and the artists clothing stand
out in contrast to the black text of the
article. The picture itself shows Dizzee
Rascal looking over his shoulder
metaphorically at his past and where he
has come from. The beer bottles and
stereo below the text are also made to
stand out to support the story of ‘rags to
riches’. The audience would appreciate
the normality of this article and be
intrigued to read on as the ordinary boy
turned star story is portrayed well and
appeals to a wide range of readers
DPS ANYLSIS
• From my analysis of DPS it is always a split of one page of a
image that can be used as a poster or cut out. They have a
article on the other page questions are in a bolder font the
answer and the font are often different colours. I will use
this convention in my double page spread. Also in the rick
ross DPS they played with the title putting a mirror image
underneath. I liked this and I am going to do it on my DPS
as the artist name is karma which means what goes around
comes around and set them staring from either side of the
page so you can image it on a rotating convey belt. They
use the same artist through out but changing the out but
change the outfit from the one on the front cover . I will do
this the best images are used on the dps .

Such as reading the news paper.

  • 7. • This cover of rwd they have change the the conventions to resemble that of a tabloid news paper which directly relates to the plug ‘the man behind the headlines..’ the use of the full stops shows the reader there is more to read aboiut this. • The central image there is news paper cut outs which depict the ‘headlines’ that have been written about him he is in front of them casting a shadow on them as if it a metaphore for him putting the headlines behind him. • He is opening his jacket to reavel his tshirt whis has bad writen on it and a lil boy with a gun and sun glasses which is a juxtaposion as the little boy is branded as bad but he remains inoseenty as he just a lil boy where as dappy is branded as bad and the lable has stuck with the negative press he has received, which connotes that maybe the headlines only say half of the story. • They have mad the list at the top of the page of in this isue to not interfear with the power of the central image. • Again they have put the plugs in front of the image adding diamention along whi him being set in front of the rwd masthead. • They are making an attack on the sun as they have used there colour scheme and put a ‘the’ at the top of the mast head to resemble it. • They have used the same colours from the artist outfit on the miso scenes.
  • 8. • This issue of xxl is simple but affective the central image is a close up of jay z face. Whith sun glasses on they have made the image reflect the coverline return of the hustle by putting a refletion of a city sky line at night and a mercedies infore ground. • They used the same black and gold colour scheme in the image in the text on the page. • The sunglasses and chain show welth and apeals to the target audience of young males which aspire to have the wealth and succsece that jay z has and shows the roots of his succese began in the city hustling where the target audience ar. • Above the mast head there is the cover line a decade of dominance because Jay Z has been dominand over past 10 years and links the photo with the plugs. • The image is sey with lighing from the right hand side creating a shadow which give connotations of importants or on other hand it enhances the titles as could be sign the spot light of fame but he still with his roots of the streats. • The JAY-Z| has a whit outline with transparnt centre which give conoation that he is transpart which conote honesty and the artcle on him will be truth ful.
  • 9. The conventions of rwd have remained the same with this issue with the addition of a cover line listing the what else the magazine has to offer music ‘style sport film news’ they have made it stand out using a white back ground with black text and alternating between bold font and regular. This is used to approach the target audience as this issue has a woman on the front rather than a male model which some readers may not no who she is. But they have tackled this by putting her name in front of her centrally on her figure as threat iswwhere many reader will look because she is a woman and the target audience is male dominate. But this issue will appeal to a more female audience, because the central image it of a female. This particular issue is the versus issue which is a sub brand of Versace and cheaper than the main brand which is a mode of address as the audience most likely cant afford the main brand and will be intrigued. They have set a black V behind her to enhance the point that is the Versus edition. They have used soft lighting which connotes femininty and innocence . This issue is very diversion as she is UK artist but she isn't well known in urban music.
  • 10. • The colour scheme is black grey with a hint of blue which is reflected in the outfit. The tag line is number 1 on tips for 2012 so for regular readers can who have followed there count down of artist that they think are going to be big in 2012 . Unlike the usual convention of having the central image in front of the mast head she is underneath it. The image reflect the tag line has the spot light is on her she looking up like she stepping up to their prediction. • Also the spot light make her stand out as thye back ground it partly illuminated and her clothes are dark adding dimension. • All the text is the same greay and black with emeli sande’ in bold caps white text drawing the attention the the audience. • Like with the versus cover they have the band at the top with the section titles to appeal to the Audience that is younger gaming tech. but also to more people such as fans of Emile Sande who may not read the magazine .
  • 11. Front cover analysis evaluation • From my analysis of front covers I have learnt that a dominate central image is crucial to the magazine desirability. It has to be potent and draw the reader in through direct eye contact and the model should be dressed simple but effective outfit that fits current fashion trends making them desirable to the target audience. The pose of the artist in the central image should reflect their personality and their music such as the ‘Dappy’ cover of RWDmagazine where the whole style of front cover was change from it conventions to that of a tabloid news paper to reflect the image and the cover line ‘behind the headlines’. I shall use this adaptation in my magazine to show the artist personality as it will be an unknown up and coming artist. • To complement the image I should have simple small amount of text and using clear font and bold for main wording to draw the reader in. it should involve all areas of the magazine so it appeals to a wider audience, such as a banner of topics such as games, fashion, gossip, at the top showing what the magazine has to offer as it is not a recognised brand yet as RWD magazine did in it earlier edition and the one of Emile Sande . • Also the colour scheme should be kept simple using 3 colours that compliment but are contrasting so different colour can be used to have the correct connotations such as black white and a third bright one • The mast head is going to be the title of the magazine and should stand out and have a slight overlap with the central image to make the image pop out of the page. • Fonts should be kept the same and plain and bold to read .
  • 12. This is the contents of an issue of Vibe magazine. This red background used on this page compliments the main image but contrasts the white text, the big ‘V’ is used to promote the magazines name subtly. The header is displayed in an abstract way which is appealing to the eye of the target audience. The features listed on the left hand side are positioned in list form making it easily read and understood with the headers slightly bolder than the sub text. The magazines logo and date are top right; this is black with white outlines separating it from the other text on this page. The image used on this page is of a well known rap artist Plies, the cap on backwards, shirt off showing his tattoos and intentional focus on his jewellery and grills are all symbols of wealth, success and the hip hop lifestyle. The publishers have used the rap artists arm to interrupt the text separating the features from the fashion section. Although text has been placed over the images arm his hat overlays the ‘T’ of the contents header bringing the artist forward as the main focus of the page.
  • 13. • This contents page is from RWD Magazine. The background is a black and white brick wall; these colours are continued with the featured artist’s symmetrical clothing. Black and white is effective here as it is simple yet classic and emphasises the blue highlighted sub text. Although the pictured artist is shown full length, her head down and passive body language, knees and hands in etc. show vulnerability and does not demand the readers full attention. The main contents header is positioned to the left in white with the issue number directly below, this is practical and the audience can immediately understand the purpose of the page. The headers listed within the contents are coloured differently giving each section its own individuality and making them stand out with the sub text white and highlighted in blue giving it an edgy unique style reflecting the magazines target audience which is people aged 15-25.
  • 14. • This is the contents page of RWD Magazine. This contents page is set out in four sections with thin black lines; this enables the publisher to separate the page into four mini contents pages, with four different pictures relating to each part of the magazine it reaches out to a wider audience. A full white background works well with such colourful pictures and text and is the most effective choice for a page layout as this. The sub headers are in different colours with matching blocks of colour above, adding to the separation aspect but using the same font integrates them as one and avoids a ‘mix and match’ page and confusing the reader. Each image only has one person but each relating to different topics again to appeal to a varied audience using the uses of gratification theory, Diversion, Personal identity, relations and Surveillance.

  • 16. This contents page is from The Source Magazine. The audience is immediately confronted by a full page portrait of the hip hop artist, Big Pun, this type of close up image shows confidence and a metaphorical ‘in your face’ attitude, backing up the common hip hop music persona. The term ‘departments’ is used as opposed to contents giving a larger more structured and organised feel. Each feature is listed in yellow capital letters, coinciding with the magazines colour scheme, and sub text in white to separate the two. The magazines logo is placed over the artists hat and outlined in white to make it stand out and cover the name brand label, maybe suggesting authority and importance.
  • 17. From my analysis of content pages I have learnt that its is a common convention to have the page split half image or images and half text. I will use this in my own magazine by using my featured artist as I have seen in all majority or the magazine the artist featured on front cover is on the contents page apart from the exection of one of the RWD magazine. Although they all use mid shots or full body when it is just one image I think I shall use a close up as to entice the audience to read on using a quote from the artist in the image. I have also learnt that they only use a few artcle that of the big artist in the contents page and use varation on font size for titles of the sections and colour code them to difriensiate between the. I am going to encorprat this into mine using the block line to separate the different sections of the magazine.
  • 18. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD ANALYSIS
  • 19. This DPS is from XXL Magazine. The header of this article immediately catches the audience’s attention, the big bold and black letters are uniquely repeated below upside down and back to front, with smaller text between the larger words drawing the reader’s eye in to read. The oversized ‘T’ starting the first sentence of the article also stands out as it’s so much larger than the rest of the text and is powerful against the white background, this attracts the audience to read on. The full length picture of the artist, Rick Ross, says a lot about the article, the balloons faded in the back ground along with the artist holding a champagne bottle and glass shouts out celebration. The artist is wearing a tuxedo which also follows this theme, although no bow tie is worn, this shows originality with a feeling of a rebellious yet laid back attitude. The gold bottle, rings and sun glasses reflect success and wealth, which are common occurrences within the hip hop music industry. No page number has been printed on this page increasing desirability for a pull out and the black and white colour scheme is simple, classic and very effective.
  • 20. • This DPS is from RWD Magazine. This article is continued from the front cover, the blue and red colour scheme is also continued as this is the feature article. Although the page number is shown on the full length picture no other text is shown, making this desirable as a pull out. The picture itself shows Skepta, the featured artist, with his hood up looking directly at the audience with a serious expression; this reflects his street/grime music career. The picture also shows part of the artists eagle tattoo above his shirt, this tattoo is stating he is a proud Nigerian as well as depicting power and pride. The white text stands out well against the blue background with a quote from the artist in bigger font and in red, this catches the readers eye and as this quote is humorous is intrigues the audience to read on. The smaller picture also shows a serious expression with Skepta holding up a chain which reads “BOY BETTER KNOW”, the big chain not only promotes the slogan of a collective of artists but symbolises pride, wealth and success. The smaller article on this DPS is also in white but against a red background separating it from the main article but causing it to stand out just as much. In this piece the use of the term ‘skeptaisms’ shows the reader that the following article is light hearted and personal to the artist and his lyrics.
  • 21. • This DPS is from Vibe Magazine. This example has a full length picture on both pages with minimal text. This layout is effective as the text itself speaks directly to the reader, asking questions about the sports star featured, Usain Bolt, and encourages the audience to read on for answers. The pictures them self, although both the same size and background, are showing two very different things, the first picture with Bolt looking towards the sky, hands together yet relaxed show the stars ambitions and dreams to aim higher. The lighting emphasises his veins and muscles symbolising strength and the ‘Bolt’ T-shirt shows pride and self recognition. The second picture shows Usain Bolt with a much more determined look hands together again but raised here showing preparation. Top left shows the 2012 Olympics logo and colours, not only does this allow the audience to immediately see this is a sporting star but also promotes the event subtly. The use of white bold lettering across both pictures works well against the featured stars clothing. Big, even, capital letters stating the word ‘BOLT’ strikes the audience immediately not only as it is the sportsman’s name but it’s a strong powerful word.
  • 22. This DPS is from XXL Magazine. The story involves both 50 cent and Souja Boy, both well-known artists in the American hip hop music industry. When opening this page the audience is immediately drawn in by the full length picture of both artists, no page number or captions are on this picture making it more desirable for mounting as a poster. The picture itself shows 50 cent stood behind Soulja Boy dressed all in black, this shows a protective body guard type image, a literal take on the phrase ‘I’ve got your back’, with Soulja Boy standing in front, his arms raised and hands open showing confidence security as well as freedom. Soulja Boy is dressed much more casually in designer clothes with this jewellery on display, showing his wealth along with the hip hop lifestyle. The grey background makes both artists stand out. The header of this article is a quote and shown in a big black font, using this as a header shows aggression with the obscenities toned down by asterisks, the reader gets an idea of exactly what the article contains and encourages them to read on where all is explained in detail. The grey newspaper type background of the article is simple yet effective as it gives a top news story image.
  • 23. • This DPS is from RWD Magazine. The audience would first be drawn to the header reading “from rags to riches” in bold varied sized letters, the reader immediately associates the words and font with a ‘street’ type story of success, this is backed up with the full length picture shown on the left hand page. This shows a well-known British grime artist Dizzee Rascal against a graffiti covered wall with spray can in hand, The background is continued onto the second page but faded to make the article more easily read, the bright colours of both the background and the artists clothing stand out in contrast to the black text of the article. The picture itself shows Dizzee Rascal looking over his shoulder metaphorically at his past and where he has come from. The beer bottles and stereo below the text are also made to stand out to support the story of ‘rags to riches’. The audience would appreciate the normality of this article and be intrigued to read on as the ordinary boy turned star story is portrayed well and appeals to a wide range of readers
  • 24. DPS ANYLSIS • From my analysis of DPS it is always a split of one page of a image that can be used as a poster or cut out. They have a article on the other page questions are in a bolder font the answer and the font are often different colours. I will use this convention in my double page spread. Also in the rick ross DPS they played with the title putting a mirror image underneath. I liked this and I am going to do it on my DPS as the artist name is karma which means what goes around comes around and set them staring from either side of the page so you can image it on a rotating convey belt. They use the same artist through out but changing the out but change the outfit from the one on the front cover . I will do this the best images are used on the dps .
