Agro-Based SMEs in
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

2. Background;
 There is about 1 million tons production of fruits
and vegetables in KP and FATA
 Malakand contributes 40% followed by Peshawar
region 30%, Southern region 20% and Hazara
region 10%.
 30-40% post-harvest losses, 10-20% due to
inappropriate storage.Majority of the fruits and
vegetables are highly perishable and delicate.

3. Problem:
 In developing countries, 45% of food spoils
mainly due to lack of cold storage.
 470 million small farmers to lose 25% of their
annual income
 Perishable food especially fresh fruits and
vegetables start to deteriorate as soon as they are
harvested.
 lose weight, texture, flavor, nutritional value and
appeal. Cooling significantly slows down the rate
of deterioration, thereby increasing the storage
life of the produce.

storage and preservation.

 Solar powered cold room available in India.
This technology enables the customers to retain the quality of their perishable
produce and derive more value for it by selling it at the right time to the right
markets.
It can be used in a pack house, in a mandi or for refrigerated transport.
Aims to create value by reducing wastage and improving price realization for
the produce.
Eco frost runs with just 6 to 8 hours of power supply for up to 30 hours
Estimated cost of 1.8 ton capacity is 18,000 US$ (PKR 2.09 million)
Estimated cost per ton is Rs. 11,60,000

Model Farm Service Centres / District Agriculture

 In the US & Australian case the manufacturing time
would be 5-6 weeks & the European case its 4 weeks.
 Ex factory price of American & Australian made solar
cold store of 20* size will cost around US$ 55000.
 The freight costs from US/Australia/EU to Karachi
varies between USD 2500 per unit.
 On average the battery warranty is for 3-5 years.
 The H.S Code for this product is as below with a Duty
of 11%, Sales Tax of 17% & an income tax of 4.5%
( Total 32.5%)
 Total cost per unit is around;
55000+32.5% +2500 = US$ 75375 (PKR 8668000)
Total cost for 30 units will be around PKR 260 Million
