TOUCHMARK AT FAIRWAY VILLAGE
April 2014
It’s a small world!
With over seven billion people on Earth, one could
easily become overwhelmed by the enormity of
our planet. But for Nancy Murphy, it truly is a
small world.
For most of her life, Nancy and her husband Neil
lived in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon.
“One of the outstanding choices we made was to
build a house on a cul-de-sac that had about 20
houses on it,” she says. “Compatible people from
all parts of the world ended up on that street. If
all people could live in this kind of neighborhood,
there would never be a war!”
Connections
One year, Nancy’s father joined in her
neighborhood’s Fourth of July festivities, and
some amazing connections were made. “My
father served in the US military, opening the
death camps and freeing the survivors. At our
Independence Day celebration, he was talking to
a neighbor who came here after the war—it turns
out she had been in a concentration camp that my
father freed!”
Moving north
After her husband’s death, Nancy realized it was
time to sell her home of 42 years and move to a
home with less upkeep, less stress, and with a little
extra help when she needed it. With her daughter
living in Hawkinson, Wash., Nancy knew she
wanted to live somewhere close. “I made a list
of three places and was going to visit them all to
choose the best place. I started here, and I never
did get to the other two places. … When we toured
the apartments and came to the one I’m living in, I
knew this was it! It was a quick decision, and I was
writing a check for the deposit the next day.
All in the family
Shortly after Nancy’s move to Touchmark three
years ago, team member Norm Conroy stopped
by her apartment to see if she was happy with the
paint job in her home. “He came in, and I must
have turned white as a ghost. He looked so much
like my father’s family, and my maiden name is
Conroy—I knew we had to be related.”
It turned out that Norm was raised in the same
area of Northern England as Nancy’s father.
“Norm sat down. I reached into my desk, and
I pulled out a picture of my father, one of my
grandfather, and one of my identical twin
grandsons. With each picture, he looked up at me
with these big open eyes and mouth. He couldn’t
believe how much he resembles my family!” (See

More connections
Norm’s resemblance to Nancy’s
family is so strong that when some of
Nancy’s English cousins visited, they
immediately were able to pick Norm out
of a crowd. One of them jumped up and
said, “That guy looks exactly like Uncle
Leslie!” Their Uncle Leslie was Nancy’s
father.
When some of the cousins visited Mt.
St. Helens, one wore a Newcastle upon
Tyne football jersey. A man approached
the group to say he was from Newcastle.
“They said, ‘We’re here visiting our
cousin Nancy, who lives in Vancouver,
and we just met someone from
Newcastle. His name is Norm Conroy.
Do you know him?’ With slim to none
chances, he knew Norm’s brother!”
A {FULL} life
Even without the family connections,
Nancy wouldn’t give up the Touchmark
lifestyle for anything. “It’s just a great
place to be,” she says. “I love the fact
they change the furnace filters, wash
the windows, and clean. That is such a
godsend!”
Nancy is especially impressed with
Touchmark’s transportation services.
“Bob and Michael take very good care of
me,” she says. “Throughout the course
of the past year, they have helped me so
much.”
“I’ve met terrific people from all walks of
life. They live a good life, which I dearly
love.”
Her community involvement continues
to enhance Nancy’s life. “I’m on the
Dining Services Committee. It’s fun,
and we have a lot of laughs. But it’s
serious work, and our input is very well
received. I’m also now on the Welcome
Committee.”
She adds, “I love the playfulness of the
people who work here. They are full of
humor and grace, and they know how
to have a good time with us. It’s a great
place to live!”

THOUGHT{FULL} Life Balance—the value of

The psychosocial and

have been studied for several years in regard to reduced risk

They discovered that as little as 200 hours of volunteering
annually showed a dramatic lowering of blood pressure. ...”
