3. BON DANCE (August 19-20, 2016)
THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who helped with our Bon Dance on
August 19-20, 2016. It takes a lot of people working many
hours planning for a successful event, shopping for all the
necessary things, arranging
for volunteers to help, pub-
licizing the event, etc.
All your efforts have not
been forgotten. We truly
appreciate the tremendous
support we received from our members, relatives and
friends. It is with everyone’s help that we can contin-
ue to do this event. Without someone arranging with the bon dance leaders for this
event, someone setting up the yagura, arranging for the stairway so the singers and tai-
ko drummers can get on top of the yagura, having the lighting set up, someone setting
up chairs so people could sit down and watch the dancers dance around the yagura,
someone selling the omamoris, bon dance towels, happi coats, kimonos, parking at-
tendants from the Kiwanis Club, making and selling andagis
(Okinawan donuts), someone making and selling the wonder-
ful Jodo Mission special shaved ice, someone making and
selling musubis, spam musubis, someone making and selling
chichi dango and gau, someone ordering and selling saimin,
someone making and selling grilled BBQ sticks, grilled ham-
burgers, someone making and selling various sushi, namasu,
turkey jook, yaki soba, someone making and selling gyoza,
someone making and selling hot dogs, chili and rice, someone
washing dishes, more dishes and more dishes, someone mak-
ing sure that all the trash cans were not overflowing with
trash, someone answering the many questions people called
about, including “how do I get to Jodo Mission?” or “where can I park?”
Thank you also to the
many, many dancers who
came and had fun dancing.
Thank you to the taiko group
Dragon Beat which began
each day of the Bon Dance
with wonderful spirit! Did
you see the little children in
this group? Some were as
tall as the taiko drum they
were drumming. See photo
to the left.

Our social hall is filled with people/dancers eating early before the /Bon
Dance begins to gain some energy!
As the sun goes down, the early eaters get choice
selection of food and hapi coats
Gyoza was a hit with long lines.
Happy andagi makers
This special lady is Akiko Nishiyama who
cooked for all the volunteers who helped
on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. As you
can see from this photo, she even washed
some dishes! From all those who ate your
lunch and dinners, THANK YOU for all
the delicious meals!
Page 4
We hope everyone had time to catch up with old friends, made new friends, got
together with their relatives! That is great! Wasn’t the food great and the prices
great! We understand that some people were disappointed that certain food items
were sold out and we apologize for that however part of the problem is manpower
so for all those people who want to help, please let us know for next year!
Thank you especially to everyone who came to our Bon Dance. Hope you
had a good time eating good food, meeting old friends, and meeting new
friends. ARIGATO AND SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT YEAR! Tell your friends
what a wonderful time it was—good food, good friends, lots of dancing!

O-HIGAN SERVICE
The word “Higan” literally means “the other shore” in
Japanese. One shore represents the world we are in, and the oth-
er shore “Higan” represents Amida Buddha’s Pure Land. The river
represents the bad mind we all possess. The concept is that we
practice the teaching to reach the other shore across the river.
We have two Higan seasons in a year. One in spring, the oth-
er in autumn, as Higan is held during the week of the spring and
autumn equinox. Shan Tao, one of the highest ranking priests of
Jodo Buddhism in China said that the sun sets due west during the equinox thus it is
a good opportunity to think about Buddha’s Pure Land which exists far away in the
west, as well as appreciate our ancestors who are also there.
Please join us for our Higan-e service and think about Amida Buddha’s Pure
Land and our ancestors. Our Higan-e Service will be held:
Sunday, September 25 at 10:00 am
Chutoba prayers will be conducted during this service. If you would like a Chuto-
ba prayer for your ancestors, please fill out the form on this page and send it or drop it
off at the Jodo Mission office by Tuesday, September 13th. Thank you.

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service
and is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the
date of death occurs for a person listed on this
record, the ministers pray for that individual dur-
ing the morning service. The prayers will contin-
ue each year for as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put
your own name on the list, too. This also helps
when it is difficult to have memorial services. We
also welcome you to attend the morning service
at 9:30 am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application
form. Each name costs $200. After the applica-
tion is accepted, the name will be listed on the
record.
