Louisiana Voodoo Research Paper
Louisiana Voodoo The Voodoo tradition that is alive and well in Louisiana today is brought to the United States care of the slave trade from the early
16th century. West African slaves in the south kept their traditions alive in the US, despite an overwhelming and coercive Roman Catholic influence.
Late in the evening, and behind closed doors, slaves returned to their roots to practice the traditions that their owners disapproved of. Despite their
desire to keep their African traditions alive, they were powerless to stop the forceful nature of the Roman Catholic traditions. After many years, a new
ritual order arose that blended Roman Catholicism and ancestral West African traditions:Louisiana Voodoo. Forced to start their religion over,

The Word Voodoo Means Spirit Of The West African
The word voodoo means spirit in the West African. It is a religion practiced by much Haitian living in Haiti as well as the Diaspora. For the majority
of Haitians, it is a symbol of solidarity of how they stood up and fought for their rights and freedom. For others, it is a painful source of reminder of
how their ancestors were cruelly and unjustly treated by the Europeans.Even though the slaves were forced to convert to the Roman Catholic
Christianity by missionaries, they continue to practice their faith. As a result, the voodoo is born out of the intermingling of beliefs and practices of
African culture and the Catholicism. Nowadays the voodoo plays important role in different integrals politically and socially. In 1676, when the French
colonized this Island, they possessed vast land, fields, pastures and garden. They needed cheap labor for the grueling work, especially in those sugars
plantations. The slave system has already existed in the 16th century.
Upon their arrival, the owners stripped them of their fundamental human rights. They exploited their skills and forbade practicing their traditional
beliefs. The Europeans look down on African beliefs as primitive and savage. They did not accept those beliefs as a genuine religion. As a result, they
baptized those poor souls as real Christians. Those slaves continued to practice their faith at their peril. If they get caught, they were punished by
lashing, imprisonments, and sometimes death. Each tribal has its own

How Martin Luther King would have Viewed Comments about...
If Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive today, he would not agree with a lot of social justice issues of our present times. Martin Luther King would
be proud of how far we have come from his time and day. Mr. King was a man of peaceful dealings and longed for interracial equality. He had great
moral standards and was an incredible hero of the nineteenth century. Recently in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there have been many
controversial things said and done that Mr. King would have frowned upon; for example, the speech given by the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, at
a celebration of Martin Luther King day in New Orleans on January 16, 2006. The mayor said many controversial remarks which seemed to be
extremely racist in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his speech he pointed out some irony of the cause for the war and the state at which America was living in at this time. Mr. King said, "We were
taking the black young men who had been crippled by our society and sending them eight–thousand miles away to guarantee liberties to Southeast Asia
which they had not found in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem and so we have been repeatedly faced with the cruel irony of watching Negro and
white boys on television screens as they kill and die together for a nation that has been unable to seat them together in the same schools."
Since hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans on August 29, 2005, there have been many relief efforts and many donations to aid its victims.
The people of New Orleans are still not as a whole completely satisfied with what has been done to help them. In New Orleans on January 16,
2006, there was a celebration in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., and on this day the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, gave an
extremely controversial speech to the public that might have very well ended his career in politics for good. The mayor gave his speech to talk
about the rebuilding of New Orleans. In his speech he referred to New Orleans as the "Chocolate City." He used this metaphor repeatedly and
proclaimed New Orleans would be "chocolate again." Other parts of the speech were controversial as well especially to New Orleanians; Nagin said "I

Jindal Moves to Strip Food Stamps from Abusers
Jindal Moves to Strip Food Stamps from Abusers:
This article provides the argument that the Governor of Louisiana, Governor Jindhal, plans to charge the recipients of food stamp benefits in his
county with fraud is justified if they abused the system during a mechanical shut down. Apparently when the food stamp system shut down, it no
longer recognized the available balance on benefit cards. As a result, active participants were not only allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted
amount well beyond their available limit, but those who were no longer active participants were allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted amount
as well.
The governor's administration is suggesting that the minimum penalty would be 12 months off the program to a maximum penalty of permanently
removed from the program. Apparently, there is an emergency protocol for stores to set an emergency spending limit of $50 to food stamp card
holders should the system shut down. Many of the larger merchants such as Wal–Mart chose not to honor the emergency limit and instead of rejecting
use of the cards, they allowed unlimited use. Millholon (2013) stated, "More than 12,000 transactions generated insufficient funds notice once the
electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, system came back online Oct. 12, 2013 and retailers could process stored transactions" (para. 2).
However the State of Louisiana will not have to pay out all that money. Apparently because the stores did not honor the $50

The Un Natural Disaster Of Hurricane Katrina
The Un–Natural Disaster of Hurricane Katrina: the Consequence of Corrupt Politicians in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina is infamous: the storm that
buried the vibrant city of New Orleans under up to sixteen feet of water. Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster, but the crimes committed against the
storm's survivors in the months prior, setting them up for devastation, were the true tragedies. Not only were the citizens of the Big Easy neglected
pre–Katrina, but they remained on the back burner of the federal government for days after the storm hit. Citizens of New Orleans – who had just been
put through one of the worst natural disasters the United States had ever seen – were treated like animals, or foreign refugees seeking sovereignty in
the US. They were not treated with the common decency an American citizen deserves, but why did this happen? The answer is simple, because the
politicians on all levels, before, during, and after the storm, neglected the citizens that trusted them. City, State, and Federal government officials
incorrectly used funds that had been allocated for disaster relief, and to the repair of the levees for many years leading up to the disaster. Because of
this corrupt behavior, the people of New Orleans were caught in a very unnatural disaster to accompany the storm. The low class citizens of New
Orleans were hit with unparalleled injustices. The atrocities committed against these innocent people was no less than a war waged against them, but the

Working Visa For A Job Interview
They were one of the few people from work who were invited to my wedding because there was not enough places to invite everyone. We were still
keeping in touch calling each other at least once a week and they could not wait for me to come back. The workplace had become sad without me.
Daniel had an attorney look into a working visa for me and he told us that I could possibly work in New Orleans. It was nice to have good news. I
was not yet on cloud nine, but I was surely on the fourth one. I still needed to go through the regular process of applying and having the job
interview. I was applying at the right time because there was a need for nurses in the operating room at Ochsner Kenner. The attorney put me in
contact with the director of surgical services and I had my interview over the phone. It was the first time that I was not a nervous reck during an
interview. Not having someone stare at me while drilling me with questions was much easier. I did not feel the pressure of giving out the right
body language while making sure my answers were appropriate .We had a long discussion and I was pleased to hear that the nurses there were not
overworked like in Montreal. The job description was similar to what I was already doing. That was good news. I knew that I would be payed in my
field and this took some of the stress off. I was getting use to the idea of working somewhere warm, a place where I would not have to scrape the ice

BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
Diagnosing Conflict caused by the BP rig explosion of spring 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and analyzing it through the Triangle of Satisfaction was a
challenging endeavor. Looking through the eyes of BP, the State of Louisiana and the US Federal government I first identified the motivating factors
from each perspective. British Petroleum BP is a powerful mega–organization, with a business model that reports "their belief of achieving sustainable
success as a group, is to act in the long term–term interest of our shareholders, our partners and society". I would just like to note that society is the
last rung on the bottom of the ladder. "They aim to create value for our investors and benefits for the communities and societies in which we operate,
with the responsible supply of energy playing a vital role in economic development." (bp.com/en/global/corporate/about–bp/company–information/our
business model.html). The Gulf spill is not an unforeseeable accident nor the direct result of a couple of bad judgments made by a few people that
control the organization and the federal bodies charged with oversight. For the sake of argument, I will say, the spill is the results of poor judgment,
technological ineptness and lack of oversight by regulatory offices, as well as, the direct failure to take safety into account. BP's motivating factor is
money and stopping the leak at least possible cost. As a mega–business at work, their purpose is to find oil and gas, developing and

Texas Gambling: The Morality vs Legality of Casino...
For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper
scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino
gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. "The term gambling or 'gaming' as the industry
calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under
the jurisdiction of the United States" (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by

The State of Texas has reaped the benefits from the taxation of different forms of gambling for almost two decades. Since the inception of the Texas
Lottery in 1992 (Texas Lottery website), the Texas Lottery has contributed more than eleven billion dollars to the Foundation School Fund which helps
support education in the state. Pari–mutuel wagering for horse and dog racing has also been allowed under state law since 1987 and continues to
provide revenue through taxes as well as employing numerous workers in the respective field (The Texas Gaming Commission website). If the State of
Texas benefits from taxes off lottery and pari–mutuel wagering at horse and dog tracks then, how come legislation is reluctant to legalize casino
gambling? The answer seems to lie within numerous religious groups and churches who view gambling as a criminal activity or a sin. An interesting
fact is charitable bingo games which, are legal in Texas and is another form of gambling, have benefited churches and religious groups in the State of
Texas for almost three decades although there is a dearth of studies showing an increase in crime and gambling problems amongst this population.
Opponents such as The Christian Life Commission of Baptist General Convention of Texas view gambling as a "predatory, regressive business model"
(Christian Life Commission). "The Christian Life Commission" feels legalizing casinos could take

A Brief Report On Hurricane Katrina

ENGR 183EW
July 28 2014 Postmortem Report on Hurricane Katrina
Abstract
Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flood were the most costly natural disaster in the history of the United States. Nearly 2,000 people died in the
entire area where the hurricane and flooding occurred, though this area included vast regions outside of New Orleans metropolitan area. This ethical
analysis examines the role of levee design and maintenance, which was under the primary authority of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The system
lacked redundancy, and the various components of the system did not meet the same design standards. For example, some of the levee walls did not
meet required standards of height or the proper foundational materials, creating weak spots, while redundancy could have been achieved if the
pumping system was adequate to handle a severe hurricane. An ethical analysis guided by the ethical concepts, approaches, and theories of descriptive
/normative judgments, virtues, absolutism, and utilitarianism results in two recommendations:
1. The Corps of Engineers should have aggressively lobbied for federal funding for infrastructure improvement, including replacement of low levees,
reinforcement of levees made with weak foundational materials, and an improved pumping system. Aggressive lobbying should have included the
district officials at the Corps of Engineers potentially resigning their positions in protest if funding was not provided. This would have sent

Summary Of ' The House Of The Rising Sun Brothel '
MARIANNE LESOLEIL LEVANT (30's) wins a brothel in a card game against ruthless WADE BUCHANNAN the former whorehouse owner. To win,
Marianne uses voodoo. Wade vows revenge.
Years later, Marianne runs the House of the Rising Sun Brothel and does her best to protect her girls, like CORA. When Wade suddenly reappears,
Marianne seeks help again from MARIE LEVEAU, voodoo Priestess and the Queen of New Orleans. However, Marie wants help from Marianne to
spy on officials to help abolish slavery. Marianne agrees. A doll is made and Marianne uses it to inflict pain on Wade.
Wade has his own agenda for revenge and he threatens prostitute PRUDENCE with harm if she doesn't help him get his revenge on Marianne. He

The card game intercut with the flashback of the hex doll works. It sets the tone and establishes the world. While some tightening of dialogue is
suggested, it's a good start. Moreover, the teaser hooks the audience; both Marie Laveau and Marianne fascinate the audience.
As the pilot continues, there are some good plotlines, but there's simply not enough anticipation, suspense, tension, and/or romance. The pilot relies a
bit too much on dialogue.
First, the pilot offers a plot to abolish slavery. Marie wants Marianne's help. It's a plotline that's smart, but vague. Marie talks a lot in the scene about
what she wants Marianne to do, but her dialogue, in this scene, can just be clearer. She talks in a round about way.
She simply needs to say that she has information that Marianne will be approached to have meetings held at her establishment and that she wants
Marianne to agree to the meetings and to spy on the men for information. Be specific.
For example, maybe they are expecting the Confederates to attack a fort, or something like this, and she needs Marianne to get information about this
attack. This gives this storyline more focus. Moreover, showing Marianne spying will enhance the tension. Maybe she's almost caught. Maybe she
checks out the pockets of one of the their clients looking for information. This also makes Marianne more proactive as a character.
Also, to elevate this

Essay on Voodoo Speech
What Will Be Covered
Today, I'm going to be talking about the roots of voodoo and what it actually is, the two types of voodoo, voodoo rituals and superstitions, and why
voodoo is perceived as a negative or controversial topic.
What Is Voodoo?
I'm sure everyone has their own perception of voodoo inside their head. Most people think includes black magic, evil spirits, and causing harm to
others. However, voodoo is actually a complex tradition of faiths and beliefs that combine into an overall world full of religion and magic. It is believed
to have started sometime around 1724 in Africa, Haiti specifically. Today, there are still people in parts of the United States that believe in voodoo and
practice it. Voodoo embraces the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New Orlean Voodoo Rituals
New Orleans voodoo rituals differ from those of Haitian voodoo because of their emphasis on voodoo queens, gris–gris, superstitions and spells.
Voodoo queens were central figures to voodoo in the United States. They looked over ceremonial meetings and ritual dance while also obtaining
income by making charms, amulets and magical powders that were guaranteed to have special healing powers. The most legendary voodoo queen was
Marie Laveau because of her special powers and ability to do exorcisms. She quickly overthrew the other voodoo queens of New Orleans. Gris–Gris is
a voodoo amulet which is believed to protect whomever wears it from evil and will provide them with good luck. New Orleans voodoo is also known
for their superstitions, however, they aren't central to the actual faith. These superstitions are just resulted from ancient Louisana voodoo tradition and
have influenced the faith.
Why is Voodoo shown in a Negative Light?
I'm sure before I talked about voodoo, you expected something totally different. I, myself, thought voodoo was actually all about black magic and
evil spirits. However, voodoo is not actually negative. When the early Haitian slaves came over to different parts of the world, they also brought over
their faith. However, because they were black and their religion was not recognized, it was prejudged as evil. The priests were known as witchdoctors,
the Loa were thought to be evil when in reality, the

Shift Of Emphasis From Racism
Shift of Emphasis From Classism to Racism
Disasters often present to a society the opportunity for self–examination by stripping away the facade and revealing the underlying problems and
inequities that were overlooked and oppressed by the established social order. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, not only did it bring about
complete destruction to the physical landscape, but it also brought to light the social inequalities and vulnerabilities that were present and deeply rooted
in the community, which became a social disaster. Soon in the aftermath, many attempted to define and categorizeHurricane Katrina as either a
"class–disaster" or a "race–disaster." The fact that the wealthy and well–off families who could afford to reside in areas safe from the floods and those
who could evacuate in time to escape the Hurricane presented the idea that Katrina was a "class–based disaster". On the other hand, the fact that the
poor that remained behind and suffered the full blow of Hurricane Katrina were predominantly black Americans contributed greatly to the debate of
"race–based disaster." However, when analyzing the timeline of the disaster, it appears that during the pre–hurricane period, the most prevalent issue
was classism, where the poor and desolate were unable to escape the forecasted disaster. During the period of disorganization following the hurricane,
the most prevalent issue was racism, where the discrimination between poor white Americans and poor black

Voodoo And Caribbean Religion
Voodoo and Caribbean Religions
The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods is what is defined as Religion. In many religions
text is believed to have scriptural status and moral authority. In some religions like Voodoo, there are no moral authority or text. It is a community
centered around individual experiences, empowerment, and responsibility and is practiced by people who are imperfect and may use religion for
their own purposes. It is a religion that originates from Africa. Voodoo is thought to be a various combination of African, Catholic, and Native
traditions. The goal of Voodoo is to serve the Spirits (sevi lwa)– offering prayers and numerous devotional rites to God and other spirits for health,
favor, and protection. Spirit possession plays an important role in this religion. It is an oral tradition that is practiced by extended families that inherit
familial spirits and devotional practices by elders. The forms of Voodoo practiced today are the results of one of the most inhumane episodes in modern
history: The African Slave Trade between the 16th and 19th century. When Africans were bought here to America they bought Voodoo with them.
During slavery an underground religion (voodoo) started to emerge among slaves. It was a combination of African religious traditions with elements of
Catholicism. Many of the early Voodoo priest came from a Muslim background. During slave times, Voodoo equaled revolt. To

Voodoo Throughout history people have feared that which they do not understand.
This is even more evident with the topic of witchcraft. With such events, as the Salem witch trials and the inquisition–like attacks on religions, not
socially accepted by the majority, demonstrates what happens when intolerance and fear of beliefs not like any other take hold in a culture. Even in the
20th century, a religion exists in the southern United States that intimidates people through prayer, ceremonies, gris–gris, and superstition. This religion

These messengers are neither good nor bad but depend on how an individual wishes to use them. This is the foundation of Voodoo but it changes
as the slave trade carries slaves to Haiti. In Haiti, Voodoo takes on a new look and purpose. With individuals from different tribes in Africa coming
together in Haiti and sharing similar beliefs, the religion begins to incorporate influences from them all. This however was not the main function
of Voodoo, it was to unite the slaves and achieve freedom. At meetings, plans for escaping and other ideas were shared with each other while at the
same time keeping the religious beliefs alive. It also played a role in the uprisings of the slaves on Haiti. With Voodoo priests uniting the people, it
was also forming an army to fight for slaves' freedom. The priests would then call for spirits to protect them in battle so they would have nothing to
fear. This helped to create the Haitian Voodoo "cult" into an organized, ritualistic, and hierarchical religion. With the slaves winning freedom, Voodoo
became an influential part of daily life in Haiti. The final phase of Voodoo was the slave trade between Haiti and New Orleans. The slaves that were
shipped into Louisiana brought a combination of African and Haitian Voodoo with them to the area. With the influence of French culture in Louisiana,
a unique form of Voodoo was created. A diversity of slaves were shipped in

The Culture Of The Creole Culture
The creoles are a big part of who we are today. The colonial term ''Creole'' means a person of mixed European and black descent. They started things
like language, food, religion, and music that we still use, cook, and listen to today. Creole culture is a mix of French, African, and Native American
customs. ''Creoles are a self–identified group of various people of French, Spanish, and Portuguese descendants who live in the coastal area of Louisiana
mainly New Orleans.'' (galegroup.com ''Creoles'') The French and Spanish in New Orleans started calling themselves ''Creoles'' after the Louisiana
Purchase when the English started moving in. The Creoles were a –different color and separated from all of the other people. In 1724 they were put
under Code Noir also known as the Black Code. According to the Code Noir, they could own slaves, own real estate, and be reorganized in court.
But they were not were not allowed to marry white people and they were also not allowed to vote. On all legal documents, they were required to
put ''f.m.c'' or ''f.w.c'' which means ''free man of color'' and ''free woman of color.'' Creoles are different from Cajuns. Most Cajuns are white and trace
their ancestries to French exiles from Canada. Cajuns included people from all over the world and Creoles may have some of the same ancestors as
Cajuns. In the late twentieth century, Creole was influenced by the resurgence of Cajun identity in Southern Louisiana. Cajuns or Acadians are

They have a great appreciation for it, however, they tend to enjoy arguments and disagreements. They look at these things as interesting. They value
someone that can argue with great skill. This is a complete contrast of the United States. We tend to try to avoid arguments and look down upon it. We
try to be liked and attempt to agree with people that we are trying to build a relationship with or hold a conversation with. The French would rather
voice their opinions and appear non–hypocritical than to agree or compromise how they feel. When it comes to interacting with people, France and
the United States differ greatly. The people of France tend not to smile or have an expression when meeting new people. In the United States, we tend
to smile and greet people as we have known them for a very long time. Edward MacNeal talks about growing up in a bicultural environment and
noticing the differences between French and American interactions. He states in his journal French–American Misunderstandings, "...the French don't
smile at people they don't know. They think it's hypocritical" (2003). This nature is why many Americans view French people to be rude or snobbish.
MacNeal also says that the American assumption is that we are all friends and the French assumption is that we are all strangers. This very assumption
could hinder interaction between people of the two nations. So with that being said, when doing business with

A Solitary Soul By Kate Chopin
On April 22nd, 1899, Herbert S. Stone & Company published a novel written by female Author, Kate Chopin. According to Chopin's official website
published by the Kate Chopin International Society in which biographers and editors detail information of the authors life, works, and commonly asked
questions, Chopin was 49 years old at the time that The Awakening was published. Thisnovel was originally titled A Solitary Soul, but was changed
just prior to publication. Though today this novel is heavily studied and appreciated by scholars and critics alike, this positive outlook on Chopin's
deeply symbolic work of fiction did not develop until over 40 years after Chopin's death in 1904 (Koloski). Upon being published, an overwhelming
amount of people were outraged by the implications of main character Edna Pontellier making decisions that directly negate her societal role as a
"mother–woman" In fact, Chopin was not only releasing a work of fiction to be enjoyed for entertainment, but voicing a great deal of controversial
opinions about women's role in society as a negative thing. At each unsure step that Edna took in the novel, it revealed more to Chopin's true feelings
about the pressures put on women to fit a certain mold, and also implied that regardless of how a woman chose to break that mold, she would be
rewarded with nothing but loneliness, homelessness, or in the case of Edna Pontellier, even death. The thought that the "normal" roles of a woman

Voodoo In South Louisiana
New Orleans had all the trapping of the metropolitan life, including its own flavor of Voodoo. It was Catholic in nature. Conversely, the rural areas,
containing slaves and slave plantations, testified of their own type of Voodoo, known as Hoodoo. It was Protestant in nature. Although there was
cross–over between the Voodoo and Hoodoo, each were different yet alike.
The Hoodoo spirit made its way into the bayous of Southern Louisiana, but Voodoo's formal organization did not. Like their "city Voodoo cousins,"
rural slaves had certain religious beliefs and practices that were an integral part of their life – "Hoodoo" by name. So gaining a deeper understanding of
the rural southern Louisiana antebellum and sugarcane plantation area will help us focus on important norms that drove rural slave religion. It will
uncover the general spiritual setting of the rural slave population that was in place. It will gives us insight into William J. Seymour, a rural slave child.

The Separation Of Ethics And Government
"Ethics is the manner by which we try to live our lives according to a standard of right or wrong" (Ghillyer). And government ethics is "the application
of ethical rules to government"
(Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). The separation of ethics and government was seen with the unraveling of Hurricane Katrina, which was a category 4
hurricane that made landfall in New Orleans on August 29, 2005. New Orleans, Louisiana was a racially segregated city occupied predominately by a
black majority and had defied regional trends by reaching a new ceiling of poverty. The community was vulnerable to their environment and to the
government. When vulnerable, the option for unethical responses heightens. Hurricane Katrina was the opportunity needed for the government to defy
ethical responsibility and to exploit the vulnerability of the poor.
A majority of New Orleans is below sea–level and is surrounded by the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. When Hurricane Katrina hit
southeast Louisiana and east New Orleans, "levees and flood walls failed or were breached in more than 50 locations. Eighty percent of the city of
New Orleans was flooded, to a depth of more than 3 m (10 ft.) in some neighborhoods" (New Orleans Hurricane Katrina Levee Failures). Ivor van

the potential devastation of a large storm to New Orleans. Since 2001 Ivor and his team

music. The nightlife and music were the two lonesome things that Kol actually enjoyed about the town in Louisiana. Everything else in the French
Quarter brought back unwelcome memories for him. Many family feuds occurred there in the past. If it wasn't for Rebekah, he would be lounging
in Milan instead of driving up to his family's home. The house happened to have a swimming which made the house more bearable for him. What he
didn't expect was for there to be another blonde in the house that wasn't his strumpet of a sister. Somehow, his brother had convinced his blonde
obsession from Mystic Falls to move to live with him in the big easy. Kol tried to rack his brain to find out what made the girl give into his demented
brother. Brian damage was the answer that he settled on. She seemed to be happy to be with his brother. Odd.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Niklaus was caressing the girl's cheek with a tender look in his eyes that must have been fake because Kol knew for a fact that his brother was not
capable of showing affection. His sister joined him in the doorway and looked at the couple with disdain written all over her face. "They've been
like this all day, every day. I probably should have warned you in advance." She muttered to him, her blonde hair swishing behind her while she
dragged her current favourite brother up the stairs to his room so they could escape what was happening downstairs. Kol made a face as he threw
his suitcase onto his bed before he plopped down beside it. "How long do you think they will last?" He lazily asked her. He crossed his arms behind his
head, watching her pace along the

The Revolutionary Scheme Of The Texas
The Texas revolution has fascinated Americans for more than a century now, from the epic martyrs of the Alamo to the unexpected victory of San
Jacinto. Lost in all the glory and pain are some forgotten actors like the New Orleans Greys volunteers or the land speculators. Indeed, the ''Crescent
City'' always seems to be left out of classical interpretation of the revolutionary scheme of the Texas. What was the role of New Orleans? By looking at
newspapers published between 1836 and 1839, the city implication would be put into perspective, using Texan battles description, drafting lists and
land sales ads, to provide insight on the military implications and commercial ties. The Texan revolution is more than a stand alone event, but one who

The recruitment in New Orleans could be dated back to the beginning of the conflict in 1835. Indeed, in October of that year, the first volunteers were
drafted during a meeting at the Bank's Arcade building. A lot of the young men in the attendance were to enroll themselves on that night and the New
Orleans Greys volunteers regiment was founded. Their involvement into the Texas revolution would be essential and decisive but, strangely, forgotten
by many. At the time, the Mexican government openly accused the American government of not doing enough to stop the flow of armed volunteers,
who crossed the border to join the Rebels. In fact, while the United States didn't implicitly supported the revolution, their duplicity and unwillingness
to fix the problem indirectly helped the war effort. During the month of October 1835, the newly formed New Orleans Grey regiment took the road to
Nacogdoches, entered Texas by the Sabine river and reached San Antonio de Bexar(San Antonio) by December. It represented a turning point in the
young revolution, because the troops waiting for them had besieged the city since October, unable to defeat the Mexican garrison. The arrival of the
Greys proved to be game changer:''(...) several Texan leaders including Stephen F. Austin will credit the Greys' arrival with preventing the collapse of
the army and, therefore, the revolution itself.''. They were on the frontline, fighting house by house and ensured victory. Those

Jonas Guran Anel 's Upbringing
Jonas Guran Anel's upbringing was rather different than those of many sleepers. Born to a coven of voodooists in rural Haiti in 1964, Jonas was
never truly asleep, more than he was confused. Jonas had always been a witness to the esoteric rituals of his ancestors carried out by contemporary
African voodooists. He had seen rather gruesome things such as human and animal sacrifices that made strange impressions on the physical
realm, "smudging" ceremonies that produced amorphous screams, and so on. He even recanted seeing someone drop like a sack of rocks at the
utterance an incantation. What'd he make of all of this? He wasn't sure, and for twenty years of his life, he truly didn't know. He had always been
led to believe by his coven elders that it was the work of the Ldo, (which are the ancestral spirits that are worshipped in Haitian voodoo) everything
else was reserved to the highest level of of the tribe before one could hear of it. Should one hear of this sacrosanct information prematurely, their
earlobes would be decapitated and sacrificed to Ldo to prevent any retribution from making it's way upon the tribe. The tribes believed that such
information was granted directly by the spirits, and if misused or exposed at an inappropriate time, would invoke their wrath upon everyone. All of
this and more is fascinating, but the question is, who is Jonas Anel? How did all of this effect him and how does it continue to affect him? Drums

Leadership During Hurrican Katrina
Hurricane Katrina was the storm of the century. Hurricane Sandy earned the nickname Super storm Sandy. If anyone had any doubts as to what
Mother Nature is capable of, these storms are perfect examples of the fury she can dish out here on planet Earth. The sheer amount of energy those
storms had is almost incomprehensible. Katrina had sustained winds of 174 mph and wave heights of over 40 feet in some places. (Knabb) Sandy
had winds of 115 mph and dumped over 10 inches of rain (Blake). By all measures, they were both extremely powerful weather systems capable of
taking lives.
While Super storm Sandy directly killed 148 people, Hurricane Katrina killed 1,200 (United States). The main difference being who the leaders
were. The states were the clear leaders during Hurricane Sandy as they should have been. They knew what they needed and they were willing to
articulate those needs at the federal level. The federal government has never been good at seeing to the day to day needs of everyday citizens. It
was not set up to do so. That role has always been delegated to the states. For some reason during Katrina state and local authorities decided it was
the other way around and they suffered for it. Katrina was not only a perfect storm in nature, it was also a perfect storm on all levels of government.
During the crisis of hurricane Katrina there was not a clear chain of command. State and local Leaders were looking toward the federal government for
leadership in the relief

Black Magic History
Black magic's influence within African cultures is no surprise when taking a look at the culture itself. Known as Vodou in Haiti, which later evolved
into the practice known as Voodoo in the United States, along with Conjuring, also known as the practice of Hoodoo which evolved from West African
countries such as Ghana, the practice of black magic persistently played a role in African culture constantly following the dispersal of Africans
worldwide throughout the past centuries. Throughout a multitude of societies in the world, specifically places with backgrounds connecting to African
heritage, it is evident that forms of black magic have played a role in their past. While examining the history and trade of black magic through a

During the time of slavery, the practice of black magic in the form of voodoo grew drastically in popularity. With an unembellished resemblance to the
African heritage of the practice, the influence of voodoo resonated greatly with African Americans as they began to navigate their roles within the new
world. The institution of this practice "created a climate in which voodoo flourished" (Brouillette). In addition to the noticed acceptance of black magic
that Brouillette shows, it is evident in the article "Perceptions of New Orleans Voodoo: "Sin, Fraud, Entertainment, and Religion" that the practice did
more than just provide the African American culture with a connection to its heritage: "Voodoo was accepted as a legitimate religion" (Long). The
article by Alison Brouillette portrays the practice of Voodoo as "the African practice of worshipping the devil in the form of a snake called Zombi"
while also examining its role in New Orleans where it "was a

Essay about The Puritans
The Puritans were a religious group that came to North America in search of religious freedom, and, in the process, greatly impacted the North
American church, government, education, social mores, and economy. Many of the things that they implemented in the first colonies are still seen
today in the social and governmental structures of the United States. Their beliefs and traditions are still practiced today and many social mores are
still being adhered to, even now. The Puritans first became a sect in England, where they became dissatisfied with the Church of England and sought
reform. They led a civil war but their victory was short–lived and they came to North America to escape persecution. "The Puritans believed ... Show

Their government was in the form of a republic, which later became a model for the United State's future government. They came up with the idea of
two houses of representatives that could pass bills and as we can see in the U.S. government today, their idea stuck (Chamber, ). Even though their
government was a republic, the Puritans pushed the principles of democracy. Their ideals, such as freedom, liberty, and religion, became a base for our
society today. The Puritans also left a legacy of conservatism which remains an important factor in North American government today (The Social
Studies Help Center). What's more, Puritan influence helped shape North American constitutional and common laws, such as "Congress shall make no
laws establishing religion..." (McGowan et al. v. Maryland). The Puritans' greatest lasting impact was on education. They believed that education was
important in order to understand the Bible, and therefore stressed the education of all persons. Religious zeal was the main drive for establishing a
system of education. As stated in Puritanism in Early American History, "Puritan leaders 3 wanted a ministry that presented an educated and logical
account of scripture, and they wanted an audience that could comprehend the message" (Helium). It was this desire that led them to establish, first, the
Free Grammar School in Boston, and then the North American public school systems. In addition to this, the Puritans are responsible for founding

Marie Laveau: Voodoo Queen Of New Orleans
One of the most famous Louisianians of all time is Marie Laveau, a voodoo practitioner with an interesting background who was considered "The
Queen of New Orleans" ("Marie Catherine Laveau: Voodoo Queen of New Orleans (September 10, 1801– June 15, 1881)"). She was the most well
known practitioner of Louisiana or New Orleans voodoo, which was developed by the slaves brought to the south to work on plantations ("Voodoo in
New Orleans"). Additionally, it was based on the Creole language and a strong belief in Catholicism, which greatly influenced Laveau during her
lifetime. Even after death, Laveau has left a lasting legacy in New Orleans, which has inspired others and even led to the creation of a museum
dedicated in her honor.

Essay on The Deportation of Acadians
Colonists from France came to Canada and settled in Acadia also known as present day east coast colonies during the seventeenth century. The name
given to the French colonists from the time of arrival to Canada was the "Acadians". The Acadians from France continued their formal lifestyle by
farming, fishing and maintaining a close family oriented culture in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The
Acadians had created a prosperous agriculture economy up until the late eighteenth century, when there was a colonial struggle in power between the
French and the British. British had conquered Port Royal and the Acadians refused to recognize British rule, wanting to keep their religious freedom

Activities such as fishing, mining, and agriculture were ways in which the east coast had an abundant of resources. Fish, salt and livestock were
the food the Acadian's relied on for survival, so it was important that enough resources were available in the East coast. There was a direct route for
due to the geographic location of their settlement being right on the coast line. They resided close to the Bay of Fundy making it easier for them to
trade with others coming into the colony. By living close to waterways the Acadians were able to make a living by trading with other colonies and
continue providing their families with food and resources for a formal lifestyle. Geographically, Nova Scotia was a great place for their agriculture
and in which it boosted their economy. Therefore Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick were lands where the
Acadians could continue the lifestyles and continue to provide for their families due to the fertile soils making agriculture and livestock an easy
transition from former life. The economies were able to increase with resources being so profitable and promising. The British and French colonies
were struggling with colonial powers but the British conquered and rising tensions begun. The British colonies thought the land the Acadians inhabited
important land to Great Britain's colonial advancement. Therefore British needed to exile them as far away as possible. The deportation was seen as a

A Portion Of Markets Of Sorrow, Labors Of Faith By...
INTRODUCTION After reading a portion of Markets of Sorrow, Labors of Faith by Vincanne Adams, it is difficult to wrap my head around the
horrible effects of Hurricane Katrina. At the time of Katrina, I was about 8 years old. I remember seeing the news and hearing people talk about it,
and I thought it was frightening. However, I do not think that it registered properly in my mind. Even as I got older, and there was still mention of it, I
never fully understood what really happened until I read this book. It is very easy to throw something off to the side and think "Oh, it's not that bad"
because the media only shows people getting help and they tell us that conditions are improving. No one spoke of the tragedies and lasting effects
written by Adams. In this essay, I would like to discuss the issues presented throughout chapters four and five surrounding the environment, the people,
and the government in New Orleans. The Environmental Impact The environmental issue at hand is fairly obvious – the entire area was completely
destroyed by the floods – including homes and businesses. Adams (2013) describes the surrounding area of Gerald Davis's home as having "no
plants, lots of weeds, and no trees. It was a dirt yard" (93). Dirt, in this case, is symbolic to these people. Everything that was once life became covered
in dirt – much like the way the people were smothered by the stress of recovery. It was near impossible to have hope for the future with such a scenic
view. Even

The Disaster Of Hurricane Katrina
Situation
On August 29th, 2005 Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage and flooding in Mississippi, Louisiana, New Orleans and areas in between. It
destructed the lives and homes of thousands of people, with a total of 1,883 fatalities (Hurricane Katrina Statistics Fast Facts, 2015). Hurricane Katrina
left many homeless and hospitals unprepared for the challenges posed to the healthcare system as a whole. Some of these challenges included gaining
access to healthcare facilities, providing expedited care to those most in need, and preventing spread of disease that commonly occurs during natural
disasters. Many facilities did not evacuate in time and many were left stranded in flooded waters as patients conditions worsened and access to essential
medications and treatments became limited.
With Hurricane Katrina, there were major issues that the healthcare infrastructure had to face. One major issue that was created by the hurricane was
extensive flooding. The flooding contaminated the region's drinking water and sanitation system, making it hard for citizens to find adequate drinking
water. Flooding also increased the spread of communicable diseases such as HIV (Taylor, 2007). The hurricane completely destroyed buildings
including hospitals and other health facilities. This impacted the patients that were already admitted into these hospitals, as well as, those in need of
medical attention after the hurricane. It was nearly impossible to treat patients because medical

Essay on Logical, Ethical, and Emotional Argumentation
Many people and organizations use writing and visual methods to persuade readers to their view. In such pieces, the author will use many different
tricks and appeals in order to draw the reader to his or her train of thought. According to Andrea Lunsford in her instructional book The Everyday
Writer, these appeals can be broken down into three main types– logical, emotional and ethical. A logical argument uses facts, statistics and surveys to
back up what the author is saying and is commonly referred to as logos. An ethical argument is one that tries to build up the authors characters and
prove to the reader that the author is qualified to give his or her views on the topic at hand. Ethical arguments are commonly called ethos. Finally, ...

Overall, the argument uses pathos to play on the human fear of torture and sway the reader with no real logical backing. She uses quotes and phrases
like "[torture] endangers our soldiers on the battlefield" and "damage[s] our country's image," calling on the sense of patriotism throughout America to
turn the people against torture. Applebaum even goes so far as to throw out the baseless conjecture "the use of 'special methods' might help explain
why the war is going so badly (Applebaum 37)." This appeal to emotion tries to sway the reader against torture by making the assumption that there is
some connection between the use of torture and the effectiveness of enemy soldiers – a great example of the use of pathos to mislead readers. Just as
"The Torture Myth" relied mainly on pathos and scattered logos, the "2011 Louisiana Life March Promo Video (Louisiana March for Life,)" a
promotional video for an anti–abortion march on the Louisiana State Capitol building, relies on the same argumentative appeals. The list of sponsors
appearing at the end of the promotional video provides the only ethical appeal for the argument. This appeal, though taking up just a fraction of the
runtime, can be the difference between gathering just hundreds of supporters for a cause and gathering tens of thousands of supporters. The video
provided one logical appeal in the statement, "Since 1973, nearly 500,000 Louisiana children

Voodoo Religion
Voodoo is a religion also known as Vodou or Voudon. In modern day society, the word 'Voodoo' usually brings others to the thought of dolls with
pins stuck in them to cause pain on one's enemies and the resurrection of the dead as zombies. In addition, black magic, animal sacrifices, and circles
of worshipers dancing to the beat of a drum are just a few of the many other misconceptions about the practice of Voodoo. According to anthropologist
Wade Davis, however, "Voodoo is not some kind of dark mystical force, it is simply a legitimatereligion" (Handwerk, 2002). Though Voodoo began in
West Africa, it is practiced in various forms worldwide. As the religion of Voodoo spread, it encountered a difficult transition. In spite of this hardship,

Voodoo priests are prominent and respected figures like many religions. Because of their strong connections with the spirits, they are expected to
perform many social functions. Spirits are called on to heal the sick, help the needy, and provide practical solutions to life's problems.
The next entities of Voodoo are the Twins. These are much like the ying and yang. The spirits are curious and rather mysterious forces of
contradictories: good and evil, happy and sad, right and wrong, and other balances. If honored now and again in religious services, they will tend to
help one have the better side of life.
The final entity of Voodoo is the dead. These are mainly the souls of one's own family members who have died but have not yet been reclaimed by
the family. Ignored family dead can be dangerous, often holding grudges and causing bad things to happen. Honored and cared for family dead are
helpful and very nice. All three entities of Voodoo are shown great respect and treated with dignity, because it is dangerous to anger any of

Hurricane Devastation Of The United States
Hurricane Katrina struck the United States on August 29, 2005; it was the costliest and deadliest hurricane to ever hit the nation. It was one of the
strongest to hit the coast in the last 100 years. Katrina caused as widespread of devastation along the Gulf Coast states and cities such as Mobile,
AL, Gulfport, MS and the worst being New Orleans, LA. Although many people were prepared for the hurricane, no one would imagine the damage
it would cause and the many lives it would take. Katrina started off as a tropical depression over the Bahamas on August 23rd and by the 25th it had
made its way to southern Florida as a Category one. While passing through Florida, Katrina had weakened, however that all changed as soon as it was
over water again. It re–intensified as it stalled beneath a very large upper–level anticyclone that dominated the entire Gulf of Mexico and became a
Category five with winds blowing about 175 mph. Once again the storm weakened, this time to a Category three as it made landfall on the Louisiana
–Mississippi boarder but it still brought winds that ranged from 100–140 mph and stretched about 400 miles across.
Prior to Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had been flooded by hurricanes five times: 1915, 1940, 1947, 1965, and 1969. About half of the city of New
Orleans lies above sea level, however, its average elevation is about six feet below sea level and is surrounded by water (History, 2009). The Army

government should start emergency operations even in the absence of clear assessment of the situation." Many States responded to Katrina by
sheltering evacuees. Four weeks after the storm, evacuees were registered in 50 states. About seventy countries also pledged monetary donations and
other assistance. Kuwait made the largest donation of $500 million. The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and many other charitable organizations

Analysis Of Pam Jenkins, Steve Kroll Smith, And Vern Baxter
In Left to Chance the authors: Pam Jenkins, Steve Kroll–Smith, and Vern Baxter attempt to fill a book with details from the events leading up to and
the aftermath of hurricane Katrina without explicitly talking about race. This is a new take on writing about hurricane Katrina because most books
and articles out there use race as a backbone in describing how devastating the storm was. This decision was beneficial to the overall message of the
book because even though the authors never brought up race, the people who were interviewed brought it up on their own volition, which
consequently brought the issue of race along for the ride in the entirety of the book without the authors never having to explicitly say, "because they
were black." This perceived notion that race was a huge piece in the puzzle that was the newly decimated New Orleans, shows that even though there
is a book that existed in all intents and purposes to NOT focus on race, race was obviously a very prevalent reason in why African Americans suffered
the worse in the storm. Furthermore, the authors made an intelligent choice in deciding to choose two economically different black neighborhoods to
focus their book on instead of writing about two poor, black neighborhoods, two white neighborhoods, or one white and one black neighborhood. The
reason for this is because the two economically different black neighborhoods prove that it wasn't just a monetary reason for why African Americans
were so devastated by the

The History of Hurricane Katrina
On August 29, 2005, the third strongest and biggest hurricane ever recorded in American history hit the Gulf Coast at eight o'clock a.m. The
interaction between a tropical depression and a tropical wave created a tropical storm later referred to as Hurricane Katrina (FAQS, 2013). Forming
over the Bahamas, Hurricane Katrina gradually strengthened as it moved closer and closer to the Gulf of Mexico. Recorded on August 28th, 2005,
Katrina jumped from a category three storm to a category five storm with maximum sustained winds up to 160 miles per hour. Although other
hurricanes, such as Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Wilma, exceeded Katrina, this dominant storm was classified as the fourth most intense hurricane ...

Numerous different aspects were altered due to the ruckus of Hurricane Katrina. The first major aspect was housing and location. Katrina nearly
demolished 300,000 homes. The ascending sea level along the coast resulting from onshore winds is a storm surge. With a twenty–two foot storm surge
in New Orleans and a twenty–seven foot storm surge in Mississippi, Hurricane Katrina averaged a shocking twelve foot storm surge. As a storm
surge's footage increases, the surge will continue to move inland farther and farther. Hurricane Katrina's storm surge is documented as moving inland a
total of twelve miles into the state of Mississippi (FAQS, 2013). Hurricane Katrina impacted a total of seven states. Five of these states were Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Kentucky and Ohio were two more states affected but in a different way. Because of the tremendous
amount of water, Kentucky and Ohio were victims of the Mississippi River flooding. Some states experienced more extreme destruction than others.
Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana experienced Hurricane Katrina's wrath firsthand. These three southern states were affected the worst by the
massive storm (FAQS, 2013). Mississippi's forest industry experienced a great amount of destruction losing 1.3 million acres of valuable forest land.
The main cause of destruction in New Orleans was blamed on the failure of the levee system to stand its ground

Louisiana Voodoo Research Paper

  • 1. Louisiana Voodoo Research Paper Louisiana Voodoo The Voodoo tradition that is alive and well in Louisiana today is brought to the United States care of the slave trade from the early 16th century. West African slaves in the south kept their traditions alive in the US, despite an overwhelming and coercive Roman Catholic influence. Late in the evening, and behind closed doors, slaves returned to their roots to practice the traditions that their owners disapproved of. Despite their desire to keep their African traditions alive, they were powerless to stop the forceful nature of the Roman Catholic traditions. After many years, a new ritual order arose that blended Roman Catholicism and ancestral West African traditions:Louisiana Voodoo. Forced to start their religion over, ... • 2. The Word Voodoo Means Spirit Of The West African The word voodoo means spirit in the West African. It is a religion practiced by much Haitian living in Haiti as well as the Diaspora. For the majority of Haitians, it is a symbol of solidarity of how they stood up and fought for their rights and freedom. For others, it is a painful source of reminder of how their ancestors were cruelly and unjustly treated by the Europeans.Even though the slaves were forced to convert to the Roman Catholic Christianity by missionaries, they continue to practice their faith. As a result, the voodoo is born out of the intermingling of beliefs and practices of African culture and the Catholicism. Nowadays the voodoo plays important role in different integrals politically and socially. In 1676, when the French colonized this Island, they possessed vast land, fields, pastures and garden. They needed cheap labor for the grueling work, especially in those sugars plantations. The slave system has already existed in the 16th century. Upon their arrival, the owners stripped them of their fundamental human rights. They exploited their skills and forbade practicing their traditional beliefs. The Europeans look down on African beliefs as primitive and savage. They did not accept those beliefs as a genuine religion. As a result, they baptized those poor souls as real Christians. Those slaves continued to practice their faith at their peril. If they get caught, they were punished by lashing, imprisonments, and sometimes death. Each tribal has its own ... • 3. How Martin Luther King would have Viewed Comments about... If Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive today, he would not agree with a lot of social justice issues of our present times. Martin Luther King would be proud of how far we have come from his time and day. Mr. King was a man of peaceful dealings and longed for interracial equality. He had great moral standards and was an incredible hero of the nineteenth century. Recently in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there have been many controversial things said and done that Mr. King would have frowned upon; for example, the speech given by the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, at a celebration of Martin Luther King day in New Orleans on January 16, 2006. The mayor said many controversial remarks which seemed to be extremely racist in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his speech he pointed out some irony of the cause for the war and the state at which America was living in at this time. Mr. King said, "We were taking the black young men who had been crippled by our society and sending them eight–thousand miles away to guarantee liberties to Southeast Asia which they had not found in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem and so we have been repeatedly faced with the cruel irony of watching Negro and white boys on television screens as they kill and die together for a nation that has been unable to seat them together in the same schools." Since hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans on August 29, 2005, there have been many relief efforts and many donations to aid its victims. The people of New Orleans are still not as a whole completely satisfied with what has been done to help them. In New Orleans on January 16, 2006, there was a celebration in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., and on this day the mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, gave an extremely controversial speech to the public that might have very well ended his career in politics for good. The mayor gave his speech to talk about the rebuilding of New Orleans. In his speech he referred to New Orleans as the "Chocolate City." He used this metaphor repeatedly and proclaimed New Orleans would be "chocolate again." Other parts of the speech were controversial as well especially to New Orleanians; Nagin said "I do not care what people are saying uptown or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Jindal Moves to Strip Food Stamps from Abusers Jindal Moves to Strip Food Stamps from Abusers: This article provides the argument that the Governor of Louisiana, Governor Jindhal, plans to charge the recipients of food stamp benefits in his county with fraud is justified if they abused the system during a mechanical shut down. Apparently when the food stamp system shut down, it no longer recognized the available balance on benefit cards. As a result, active participants were not only allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted amount well beyond their available limit, but those who were no longer active participants were allowed to use their cards for an unrestricted amount as well. The governor's administration is suggesting that the minimum penalty would be 12 months off the program to a maximum penalty of permanently removed from the program. Apparently, there is an emergency protocol for stores to set an emergency spending limit of $50 to food stamp card holders should the system shut down. Many of the larger merchants such as Wal–Mart chose not to honor the emergency limit and instead of rejecting use of the cards, they allowed unlimited use. Millholon (2013) stated, "More than 12,000 transactions generated insufficient funds notice once the electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, system came back online Oct. 12, 2013 and retailers could process stored transactions" (para. 2). However the State of Louisiana will not have to pay out all that money. Apparently because the stores did not honor the $50 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Un Natural Disaster Of Hurricane Katrina The Un–Natural Disaster of Hurricane Katrina: the Consequence of Corrupt Politicians in New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina is infamous: the storm that buried the vibrant city of New Orleans under up to sixteen feet of water. Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster, but the crimes committed against the storm's survivors in the months prior, setting them up for devastation, were the true tragedies. Not only were the citizens of the Big Easy neglected pre–Katrina, but they remained on the back burner of the federal government for days after the storm hit. Citizens of New Orleans – who had just been put through one of the worst natural disasters the United States had ever seen – were treated like animals, or foreign refugees seeking sovereignty in the US. They were not treated with the common decency an American citizen deserves, but why did this happen? The answer is simple, because the politicians on all levels, before, during, and after the storm, neglected the citizens that trusted them. City, State, and Federal government officials incorrectly used funds that had been allocated for disaster relief, and to the repair of the levees for many years leading up to the disaster. Because of this corrupt behavior, the people of New Orleans were caught in a very unnatural disaster to accompany the storm. The low class citizens of New Orleans were hit with unparalleled injustices. The atrocities committed against these innocent people was no less than a war waged against them, but the ... • 6. Working Visa For A Job Interview They were one of the few people from work who were invited to my wedding because there was not enough places to invite everyone. We were still keeping in touch calling each other at least once a week and they could not wait for me to come back. The workplace had become sad without me. Daniel had an attorney look into a working visa for me and he told us that I could possibly work in New Orleans. It was nice to have good news. I was not yet on cloud nine, but I was surely on the fourth one. I still needed to go through the regular process of applying and having the job interview. I was applying at the right time because there was a need for nurses in the operating room at Ochsner Kenner. The attorney put me in contact with the director of surgical services and I had my interview over the phone. It was the first time that I was not a nervous reck during an interview. Not having someone stare at me while drilling me with questions was much easier. I did not feel the pressure of giving out the right body language while making sure my answers were appropriate .We had a long discussion and I was pleased to hear that the nurses there were not overworked like in Montreal. The job description was similar to what I was already doing. That was good news. I knew that I would be payed in my field and this took some of the stress off. I was getting use to the idea of working somewhere warm, a place where I would not have to scrape the ice off my car in the morning when it is –40 degrees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Diagnosing Conflict caused by the BP rig explosion of spring 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and analyzing it through the Triangle of Satisfaction was a challenging endeavor. Looking through the eyes of BP, the State of Louisiana and the US Federal government I first identified the motivating factors from each perspective. British Petroleum BP is a powerful mega–organization, with a business model that reports "their belief of achieving sustainable success as a group, is to act in the long term–term interest of our shareholders, our partners and society". I would just like to note that society is the last rung on the bottom of the ladder. "They aim to create value for our investors and benefits for the communities and societies in which we operate, with the responsible supply of energy playing a vital role in economic development." (bp.com/en/global/corporate/about–bp/company–information/our business model.html). The Gulf spill is not an unforeseeable accident nor the direct result of a couple of bad judgments made by a few people that control the organization and the federal bodies charged with oversight. For the sake of argument, I will say, the spill is the results of poor judgment, technological ineptness and lack of oversight by regulatory offices, as well as, the direct failure to take safety into account. BP's motivating factor is money and stopping the leak at least possible cost. As a mega–business at work, their purpose is to find oil and gas, developing and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Texas Gambling: The Morality vs Legality of Casino... For years casino gambling was portrayed in the media and Hollywood as being associated with criminal activities and the mafia. Now with proper scrutiny and government regulations casino gambling has become a lucrative business, with casinos stock even trading on Wall Street. Casino gambling is an ever increasingly popular and legal activity in many states throughout the United States. "The term gambling or 'gaming' as the industry calls it, means any legalized form of wagering or betting conducted in a casino, on a riverboat, on an Indian reservation, or at any other location under the jurisdiction of the United States" (National Gambling Impact Study Commission Act). States that allow casino gambling benefit vastly by re–incorporating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The State of Texas has reaped the benefits from the taxation of different forms of gambling for almost two decades. Since the inception of the Texas Lottery in 1992 (Texas Lottery website), the Texas Lottery has contributed more than eleven billion dollars to the Foundation School Fund which helps support education in the state. Pari–mutuel wagering for horse and dog racing has also been allowed under state law since 1987 and continues to provide revenue through taxes as well as employing numerous workers in the respective field (The Texas Gaming Commission website). If the State of Texas benefits from taxes off lottery and pari–mutuel wagering at horse and dog tracks then, how come legislation is reluctant to legalize casino gambling? The answer seems to lie within numerous religious groups and churches who view gambling as a criminal activity or a sin. An interesting fact is charitable bingo games which, are legal in Texas and is another form of gambling, have benefited churches and religious groups in the State of Texas for almost three decades although there is a dearth of studies showing an increase in crime and gambling problems amongst this population. Opponents such as The Christian Life Commission of Baptist General Convention of Texas view gambling as a "predatory, regressive business model" (Christian Life Commission). "The Christian Life Commission" feels legalizing casinos could take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. A Brief Report On Hurricane Katrina Taehyun Chang ENGR 183EW July 28 2014 Postmortem Report on Hurricane Katrina Abstract Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flood were the most costly natural disaster in the history of the United States. Nearly 2,000 people died in the entire area where the hurricane and flooding occurred, though this area included vast regions outside of New Orleans metropolitan area. This ethical analysis examines the role of levee design and maintenance, which was under the primary authority of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The system lacked redundancy, and the various components of the system did not meet the same design standards. For example, some of the levee walls did not meet required standards of height or the proper foundational materials, creating weak spots, while redundancy could have been achieved if the pumping system was adequate to handle a severe hurricane. An ethical analysis guided by the ethical concepts, approaches, and theories of descriptive /normative judgments, virtues, absolutism, and utilitarianism results in two recommendations: 1. The Corps of Engineers should have aggressively lobbied for federal funding for infrastructure improvement, including replacement of low levees, reinforcement of levees made with weak foundational materials, and an improved pumping system. Aggressive lobbying should have included the district officials at the Corps of Engineers potentially resigning their positions in protest if funding was not provided. This would have sent ... When Wade suddenly reappears, Marianne seeks help again from MARIE LEVEAU, voodoo Priestess and the Queen of New Orleans. However, Marie wants help from Marianne to spy on officials to help abolish slavery. Marianne agrees. A doll is made and Marianne uses it to inflict pain on Wade. While some tightening of dialogue is suggested, it's a good start. Moreover, the teaser hooks the audience; both Marie Laveau and Marianne fascinate the audience. As the pilot continues, there are some good plotlines, but there's simply not enough anticipation, suspense, tension, and/or romance. The pilot relies a bit too much on dialogue. First, the pilot offers a plot to abolish slavery. Marie wants Marianne's help. It's a plotline that's smart, but vague. Marie talks a lot in the scene about what she wants Marianne to do, but her dialogue, in this scene, can just be clearer. She talks in a round about way. She simply needs to say that she has information that Marianne will be approached to have meetings held at her establishment and that she wants Marianne to agree to the meetings and to spy on the men for information. Be specific. For example, maybe they are expecting the Confederates to attack a fort, or something like this, and she needs Marianne to get information about this attack. This gives this storyline more focus. Moreover, showing Marianne spying will enhance the tension. Maybe she's almost caught. Maybe she checks out the pockets of one of the their clients looking for information. This also makes Marianne more proactive as a character. Also, to elevate this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Essay on Voodoo Speech What Will Be Covered Today, I'm going to be talking about the roots of voodoo and what it actually is, the two types of voodoo, voodoo rituals and superstitions, and why voodoo is perceived as a negative or controversial topic. What Is Voodoo? I'm sure everyone has their own perception of voodoo inside their head. Most people think includes black magic, evil spirits, and causing harm to others. However, voodoo is actually a complex tradition of faiths and beliefs that combine into an overall world full of religion and magic. It is believed to have started sometime around 1724 in Africa, Haiti specifically. Today, there are still people in parts of the United States that believe in voodoo and practice it. Voodoo embraces the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New Orlean Voodoo Rituals New Orleans voodoo rituals differ from those of Haitian voodoo because of their emphasis on voodoo queens, gris–gris, superstitions and spells. Voodoo queens were central figures to voodoo in the United States. They looked over ceremonial meetings and ritual dance while also obtaining income by making charms, amulets and magical powders that were guaranteed to have special healing powers. The most legendary voodoo queen was Marie Laveau because of her special powers and ability to do exorcisms. She quickly overthrew the other voodoo queens of New Orleans. Gris–Gris is a voodoo amulet which is believed to protect whomever wears it from evil and will provide them with good luck. New Orleans voodoo is also known for their superstitions, however, they aren't central to the actual faith. These superstitions are just resulted from ancient Louisana voodoo tradition and have influenced the faith. Why is Voodoo shown in a Negative Light? I'm sure before I talked about voodoo, you expected something totally different. I, myself, thought voodoo was actually all about black magic and evil spirits. However, voodoo is not actually negative. When the early Haitian slaves came over to different parts of the world, they also brought over their faith. However, because they were black and their religion was not recognized, it was prejudged as evil. The priests were known as witchdoctors, the Loa were thought to be evil when in reality, the

  • 14. Shift Of Emphasis From Racism Shift of Emphasis From Classism to Racism Disasters often present to a society the opportunity for self–examination by stripping away the facade and revealing the underlying problems and inequities that were overlooked and oppressed by the established social order. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, not only did it bring about complete destruction to the physical landscape, but it also brought to light the social inequalities and vulnerabilities that were present and deeply rooted in the community, which became a social disaster. Soon in the aftermath, many attempted to define and categorizeHurricane Katrina as either a "class–disaster" or a "race–disaster." The fact that the wealthy and well–off families who could afford to reside in areas safe from the floods and those who could evacuate in time to escape the Hurricane presented the idea that Katrina was a "class–based disaster". On the other hand, the fact that the poor that remained behind and suffered the full blow of Hurricane Katrina were predominantly black Americans contributed greatly to the debate of "race–based disaster." However, when analyzing the timeline of the disaster, it appears that during the pre–hurricane period, the most prevalent issue was classism, where the poor and desolate were unable to escape the forecasted disaster. During the period of disorganization following the hurricane, the most prevalent issue was racism, where the discrimination between poor white Americans and poor black ... With individuals from different tribes in Africa coming together in Haiti and sharing similar beliefs, the religion begins to incorporate influences from them all. This however was not the main function of Voodoo, it was to unite the slaves and achieve freedom. At meetings, plans for escaping and other ideas were shared with each other while at the same time keeping the religious beliefs alive. It also played a role in the uprisings of the slaves on Haiti. With Voodoo priests uniting the people, it was also forming an army to fight for slaves' freedom. The priests would then call for spirits to protect them in battle so they would have nothing to fear. This helped to create the Haitian Voodoo "cult" into an organized, ritualistic, and hierarchical religion. According to Chopin's official website published by the Kate Chopin International Society in which biographers and editors detail information of the authors life, works, and commonly asked questions, Chopin was 49 years old at the time that The Awakening was published. Thisnovel was originally titled A Solitary Soul, but was changed just prior to publication. Though today this novel is heavily studied and appreciated by scholars and critics alike, this positive outlook on Chopin's deeply symbolic work of fiction did not develop until over 40 years after Chopin's death in 1904 (Koloski). Upon being published, an overwhelming amount of people were outraged by the implications of main character Edna Pontellier making decisions that directly negate her societal role as a "mother–woman" In fact, Chopin was not only releasing a work of fiction to be enjoyed for entertainment, but voicing a great deal of controversial opinions about women's role in society as a negative thing. At each unsure step that Edna took in the novel, it revealed more to Chopin's true feelings about the pressures put on women to fit a certain mold, and also implied that regardless of how a woman chose to break that mold, she would be rewarded with nothing but loneliness, homelessness, or in the case of Edna Pontellier, even death. New Orleans, Louisiana was a racially segregated city occupied predominately by a black majority and had defied regional trends by reaching a new ceiling of poverty. Their involvement into the Texas revolution would be essential and decisive but, strangely, forgotten by many. At the time, the Mexican government openly accused the American government of not doing enough to stop the flow of armed volunteers, who crossed the border to join the Rebels. In fact, while the United States didn't implicitly supported the revolution, their duplicity and unwillingness to fix the problem indirectly helped the war effort. Even though their government was a republic, the Puritans pushed the principles of democracy. Their ideals, such as freedom, liberty, and religion, became a base for our society today. At the time of Katrina, I was about 8 years old. I remember seeing the news and hearing people talk about it, and I thought it was frightening. However, I do not think that it registered properly in my mind. Even as I got older, and there was still mention of it, I never fully understood what really happened until I read this book. It is very easy to throw something off to the side and think "Oh, it's not that bad" because the media only shows people getting help and they tell us that conditions are improving. No one spoke of the tragedies and lasting effects written by Adams. In this essay, I would like to discuss the issues presented throughout chapters four and five surrounding the environment, the people, and the government in New Orleans. The Environmental Impact The environmental issue at hand is fairly obvious – the entire area was completely destroyed by the floods – including homes and businesses. Adams (2013) describes the surrounding area of Gerald Davis's home as having "no plants, lots of weeds, and no trees. It was a dirt yard" (93). Dirt, in this case, is symbolic to these people. Katrina caused as widespread of devastation along the Gulf Coast states and cities such as Mobile, AL, Gulfport, MS and the worst being New Orleans, LA. Although many people were prepared for the hurricane, no one would imagine the damage it would cause and the many lives it would take. Katrina started off as a tropical depression over the Bahamas on August 23rd and by the 25th it had made its way to southern Florida as a Category one. While passing through Florida, Katrina had weakened, however that all changed as soon as it was over water again. It re–intensified as it stalled beneath a very large upper–level anticyclone that dominated the entire Gulf of Mexico and became a Category five with winds blowing about 175 mph. Once again the storm weakened, this time to a Category three as it made landfall on the Louisiana –Mississippi boarder but it still brought winds that ranged from 100–140 mph and stretched about 400 miles across. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had been flooded by hurricanes five times: 1915, 1940, 1947, 1965, and 1969. About half of the city of New Orleans lies above sea level, however, its average elevation is about six feet below sea level and is surrounded by water (History, 2009). The Army Corps of Engineers had constructed a system of levees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Analysis Of Pam Jenkins, Steve Kroll Smith, And Vern Baxter In Left to Chance the authors: Pam Jenkins, Steve Kroll–Smith, and Vern Baxter attempt to fill a book with details from the events leading up to and the aftermath of hurricane Katrina without explicitly talking about race. This is a new take on writing about hurricane Katrina because most books and articles out there use race as a backbone in describing how devastating the storm was. This decision was beneficial to the overall message of the book because even though the authors never brought up race, the people who were interviewed brought it up on their own volition, which consequently brought the issue of race along for the ride in the entirety of the book without the authors never having to explicitly say, "because they were black." This perceived notion that race was a huge piece in the puzzle that was the newly decimated New Orleans, shows that even though there is a book that existed in all intents and purposes to NOT focus on race, race was obviously a very prevalent reason in why African Americans suffered the worse in the storm. Furthermore, the authors made an intelligent choice in deciding to choose two economically different black neighborhoods to focus their book on instead of writing about two poor, black neighborhoods, two white neighborhoods, or one white and one black neighborhood. The reason for this is because the two economically different black neighborhoods prove that it wasn't just a monetary reason for why African Americans were so devastated by the ... Hurricane Katrina's storm surge is documented as moving inland a total of twelve miles into the state of Mississippi (FAQS, 2013). Hurricane Katrina impacted a total of seven states. Five of these states were Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Kentucky and Ohio were two more states affected but in a different way. Because of the tremendous amount of water, Kentucky and Ohio were victims of the Mississippi River flooding. Some states experienced more extreme destruction than others. Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana experienced Hurricane Katrina's wrath firsthand. These three southern states were affected the worst by the massive storm (FAQS, 2013).
