Importance of the Levant in the World Economy during the Early Modern Times". In this chapter

A Man Of An Interesting Imagination By Evliya Celebi
A man of an interesting imagination, Evliya Çelebi was a Turk born in Istanbul in 1611. His travel
account is both long and a comprehensive account of the Ottoman Empire at its greatest extent in
the seventeenth century . His obsession with detail and unending curiosity led to his through
documentation of the sites that we visited during his travels. Unfortunately, beyond the travel
accounts written by Çelebi himself, there is not much other documentation about the life of Çelebi.
Despite this, his extensive account does shed light on Çelebi's personality, and possibly the attitude
of other Ottoman Turks during this time period. In particular, Çelebi goes into extensive detail of
several important cities that he visited. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His description of the inclusion of sport, schools, public baths, markets, soup kitchens and places for
travellers within the courtyard of the mosque to stay reveals that Istanbul was tolerant of outsiders
and truly was the jewel of the Ottoman empire . This description of the Süleymaniye Mosque, while
not outright describing the people of the main city of Istanbul, reveals the pride that Çelebi has for
Istanbul.
Additionally, in his chapter on Istanbul, Çelebi describes the people living in Galata, the settlement
across the harbor. Çelebi describes the layout of the city in different quarters of Muslims, Jews and
Armenians . Çelebi elaborates that there were no infidels allowed in the first castle, and that if any
armed Christians were seen in the second castle, that they were killed immediately . On the
profession of the people living in Galata, Çelebi put them into four categories of sailors, merchants,
craftsmen and joiners/caulkers . It seems that Çelebi and other Ottomans tolerated these people
mainly because they lived on the opposite side of the harbor and were required to run the economic
engine of ships and trade for Istanbul. It was even noted that Çelebi would interact with the
craftsmen of Galata, since he was of a "sociable and impertinent nature" . Çelebi's description of the
various peoples living in Galata gives the impression that he held a disdain for people

Turkey 's Political Struggle : The Akp Vs. The Gulenists
Turkey's Political Struggle: The AKP vs. The Gulenists
On July 15th 2016, the nation of Turkey was shakened by an attempted military coup. The plot was
originally planned for the following day. However, it is believed that the Turkish secret service
became aware of the plan, forcing the conspirators to act earlier. The putschists were able to carry
out synchronized attacks on the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Ankara, and Marmaris. In Ankara the
parliament building was seized. The target in Marmaris was to capture and kill President Erdogan,
who was vacationing at the Mediterranean resort town. The military action began at around 10:00
PM, with the closing of two Istanbul bridges connecting Europe and Asia. Coinciding with this, up
to six F–16 fighter jets began a series of passes over the city of Ankara, refueling from four tanker
planes that were flown from Incirlik air base. Incirlik is a large air force base were NATO and US
forces are stationed. While these attacks were taking place in Turkey's two largest cities, helicopters
from Cigli airbase carried commando teams to carry out attacks on the hotel where Tayyip Erdogan
was presumably vacationing. Erdogan narrowly escaped and was able to fly to Istanbul. While en
route, the television network seized, returned to the air. Using social media, Erdogan was able to
rally his supporters and told them to take to the streets. Mosques broadcasted calls for support.
Interestingly, a significant proportion of

The Ottoman Empire and Judaism
The reason the Jews went to the Ottoman Empire was because the Christians persecuted them
because of their different beliefs. The Jews were so scared of what the Christians might do they
wanted to settle in a safer place which the Ottomans offered them. The Ottomans offering them land
was the best thing the Jews could have asked for. The Ottomans offered the Jews protection, offered
them communal autonomy and tolerated their religious practices. The Ottomans at the time had a
rule about non–Muslims having to pay a tax, which is called the Jitza. The Muslims considered Jews
and Christians dhimmi or the people of the pact. The dhimmi we issued to pay the jitza, and where
forced to follow these rules; prohibition against carrying fire arms, against riding horses, against
building new houses or worship or even repairing old ones, against proselytism, against building
homes higher than Muslim ones, and they must wear distinctive clothing. Even after all of these
rules the Jewish community still thrived in the Ottoman Empire. The population of Jews in the
Ottoman Empire was very distinct and was coming from different places. The most noticeable and
most studied among the Jews in the Ottoman Empire were the Sephardim. The Sephardim had great
political and cultural influence on the Ottoman Empire. The Jews became very valuable to the
Ottomans because of the ties they had with Europe. Europeans brought new languages and
technologies including the newest forms in medicine,

He came up with a plan known as the Crazy Project to build a second Bosphorus as well as a second
Istanbul. Then he announced a new project for Taksim Square, which is the center of Istanbul's
European side and considered the heart of the city. The square itself surrounds a tiny park called
Gezi Park, which with the absence of buildings, offers at least a sense of free space and is also
known for being the place of liberals. Erdogan wanted to build tunnels from beneath and replace
Gezi Park with a shopping mall designed to look like Ottoman–era military barracks. Putting
anything Ottoman–like in Taksim, a symbol of secular republic, felt like a sign of Erdogan's Islamic
identity and thus caused a reaction on the people who supported the liberal's side. But there was a
bigger problem, Erdogan wasn't the mayor of Istanbul. And he wasn't consulting his constituents
there. When a local committee composed of historians and academics voted against the plan he
simply had another committee made up from his own party and override the vote. This was what his
rule had come to mean and when people heard about that they got angry.
The protests began when activists gathered in Gezi Park to protest against its demolition. At first, it
was just some angry citizens holding sit–ins. But the numbers quickly grew. Within a week the
activists' tiny–sit spread into 70 cities. Many of the protestors were not

The Destruction Of The Mongols Across Afro Eurasia And The...
The destruction of the Mongols across Afro–Eurasia and the Black Death were the factors in which
prompted the creation of the three important Islamic states. The three newly formed empires were
the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals and they controlled regions from Southern Europe to the
northern part of India. According to Pollard, "by the mid–sixteenth century the Mughals controlled
the northern Indus river valley; the Safavids occupied Persia; and the Ottomans ruled Anatolia, the
Arab, world, and much of southern and eastern Europe," (Pollard, Pg. 391). The Ottoman Empire
lasted the longest of the three up until the early twentieth century due to their politics, religion
tolerance, and develop of commerce. The Ottoman Empire's politics were very clever to achieve
rapid success because its structure was based on adaptation and attractions. During Osman's reign,
the sultan, the empire adopted many ideologies from their adversaries to persuade people to joined
their improved kingdom. In the book, Pollard explains how, "[ the Ottomans] transformed
themselves from warrior bands roaming the borderlands between Islamic and Christian worlds into
rulers of a settled state...," (Pollard, Pg. 392). They saw a clearer vision that their laying foundations
was their military might and civilian bureaucracy. Their strategy for territorial expansion across the
continent was by attracting civilians to join their military. The soldiers were promised wealth for
their victories earned in the

Suleiman the Magnificent
Suleiman the Magnificent
The Ottoman Empire was an empire lasting from 1299 to 1923. Osman was leading the small
Ottoman Empire in 1299 in western Anatolia and he was slowly extending his settlements away
from his Muslim neighbors. It was not allowed for Muslims to kill other Muslims. He had a number
of soldiers called the Ghazis who were brave, loyal and fearless. These solders helped Osman tread
into unknown land and spread his rule. Osman's name was becoming more known and after his
death, people called him courageous strong and great. This is where the centuries old Turkish saying
comes from: "May he be as good as Osman." After a few centuries the Ottoman Empire was
flourishing, it spanned 3 continents and contained 29 provinces. ... Show more content on

If an enemy doesn't strike from outside, an enemy may strike from inside. A civil war can cause
many deaths and disrupt the focus of any leader. Suleiman would have to put all of his attention to
people fighting inside his nation instead of focusing on incoming attacks from the outside. A lot of
empires have fallen due to internal attacks. Interaction with other sectors was not too often which
helps people be in an environment where everyone follows the same religion. There is also almost
no interference from the government on how the leader chooses to run the Millets. Things like taxes
and sometimes even laws aren't checked by the government because there aren't any rules against
having different styles of living. Travelers from different religious backgrounds can now enter a
land where they don't have to be feared of not being able to walk in and get hurt because of their
differences. This encourages travelers, who are usually traders to come to this culturally diverse and
peaceful land to trade their goods, instead of going to Europe where only one religion was accepted:
Christianity. Suleiman put out the laws on streets so that all could read and understand what is
allowed and what is not. This was important because now everyone knew the difference between
right and wrong. This also prevented officials from making fake or arbitrary laws. The Millet system

settlement of the city. In 700 BC, when the Greek Colonists which was led by King Byzas arrived in
the area, they settled there because of the strategic location along the Bosphorus Strait, and late
King Byzas named the city as Byzantium. Succeeding its progression by the Greeks, Byzantium

"We are not makers of history, we are made by history"– Martin Luther King Jr.
To grasp the formation and development of a piece of land throughout the Ages to the current
stature as the largest city in Turkey an explanation is required of through what medium and what
time period the land was founded and through what agency the area has developed to the present–
day and the urban complications that have arose and history is the vessel to such enlightenment.
Per usual regarding the foundations of lands there are many folk tales relating to the foundation of
Istanbul. The most accepted theory states, around 650 BC a tribe originating from the Aegan Sea
had left their central city upon hopes of finding more fertile and prosperous land, this tribe was
established under the leadership of Byzas. According to legend, an oracle's guidance must be sought
before commencement could be granted, and upon receiving the oracle's advice to settle opposite
the "land of the blind" Byzas set out to fulfil the prophecy (Wonderful Istanbul 2015.)
The tribe's conquest for a land fitting of the oracle's prophecy was a time consuming quest, however
fruitful. Upon arrival at the headland of present–day Istanbul, they took great delight in examination
of the fertile fields and the advantages offered by the natural harbor and furthermore took notice to a
settlement opposite the stretch of water, and decided that these settlers must have been blind to the
senses if the benefits of the land opposite of

The Role of Istambul on Modern Literature
Istanbul plays an important role in all kinds of art. It is especially important in literature. There are a
lot of books set in Istanbul and we can also talk about famous writers who were inspired by the
Istanbul views and who wrote beautiful stories because of Istanbul. There is also another group of
writers, who were born and who wrote or write their works here, in Istanbul. This, of course, has its
own print and meaning, because living in such a beautiful and great city like Istanbul cannot not to
affect writers' works. When we talk about literature and Istanbul, we also have to mention famous
writers and poets that wrote their stories and books in this city. Istanbul has a rich story, there have
lived a lot of writers from the Ottoman Empire till nowadays. There were writers not only from the
common people, but also from the Sultans. For example, Ottoman emperor Suleiman the
Magnificent, who moved to Constantinople after the death of his father, was also an accomplished
poet, he wrote his poems in both Persian and Turkish languages. His most famous verse under the
pen name Muhibbi is this:
"The people think of wealth and power as the greatest fate,
But in this world a spell of health is the best state.
Wha men call sovereignty is a worldly strife and constant war;
Worship of God is the highest throne, the happiest of all estates."
Another famous Turkish writer who was both born in Istanbul and wrote about Istanbul is Orhan
Veli Kanık (1914–1950).

The Major Characteristics Of The Central Mosques In Istanbul
zid Mosque (after 1491), the Selim Mosque (1522), the Sehzade külliye (1548), and the Süleyman
külliye (after 1550). They all have elevated clarity and logic and simplicity of design. A major
characteristic of Ottoman mosques from the early period is the dominance of a central dome that
covers a significant part of the prayer hall. The central dome increases dramatically in size and is
often combined with a series of halfdomes and small domes that cascade from the central dome with
the rule of Ottomans. A number of mosques have one, two, or four half–domes supporting the
central dome. The domes in Ottoman architecture have a semi–circular flat profile.
Hagia Sophia One of the main tourist attractions in Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia known as Ayasofya in

destroyed again in 532 during the week of riots known as the 'Nika Revolt'. Rebuilt under Emperor
Justinian who was to construct a larger and more majestic building than its predecessors, which
resulted in him shipping marble columns to Constantinople for the project from Baalbek in the

An Essay On The Blue Mosque
The Blue Mosque, or as its mother language call it The Sultan Ahmet Camii, is an amazing and an
interesting Islamic piece of architect located in Istanbul, Turkey. The blue tiles of the inside,
adorning its interior walls, are the main reason why people call it the blue mosque. I found it
interesting to write about such a historical piece of architecture that was built during the rule of
Ahmed I (or the first) in the early 17th century. A tomb of the founder, like many other mosques, a
hospice and a madrasa as well, all together were found and contained under the name of Külliye in
the mosque. The mosque's function is still a mosque, as it was the first imperial mosque for more
than forty years in that time, and was never converted into anything, not a church nor a museum.
Non–Muslims are not to enter during the daily five prayers for half an hour or so, however, it is a
popular tourist attraction in Istanbul. The sultan at that time, Sultan Ahmed the First, was one of the

Cultural Culture In Turkey
Culture is defined as "the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time",
according to Merriam–Webster (2016). Even though Turkey as a sovereign nation is fairly young,
it's cultural roots can be dated as far back as Alexander the Great. The Turkic people have an
extremely long history and a very diverse culture. Long before the establishment of the Republic of
Turkey in 1923, the area had seen its' fair share of war and strife. Since the Hellenization of the
Anatolian Peninsula by Alexander the Great, the area has seen a constant power struggle for an area
that was known as the Crossroads of the World (modern day Istanbul). Since Istanbul was once the
main trading hub of the known world, it's one of the most contributing factors for the countries' rich
and diverse culture. It is important to understand the differences between cultures so that we may
better understand our similarities. When met with other cultures it is possible to be offensive
without knowing it. Being that Turkey has many cultures that differ vastly, it could be quite easy for
an unknowledgeable tourist to be offensive. Taking the time to do research before traveling to new
areas might allow a person to save face, and avoid offense or embarrassment when visiting foreign
places.
The Turkish people have a rich and diverse culture. A factor that plays a major role in their culture is

Ethnic And Cultural Diversity : A Global Scale, Asia Minor...
Two–Halves
On a global scale, Asia Minor (the Eastern Half) has supported human agglomerations since the
ancient times. Migration to Europe (the Western Half) by land (as the primary means of migration)
would have to be around the Black Sea and the north being too cold, a route through Istanbul
became a natural choice.
Istanbul as a fortress–city was established in the 6th century B.C. on the Thracian side (another
name for Western region). The city gained in expanse to both sides as trade through water in region
grew. Initial migrants from Anatolia (another name for Eastern region) agglomerated in a segregated
pattern. As the population grew, urban functions became derivatives of these patterns.
Both halves have had a history of ethnic and cultural diversity due to the variety of regions from
where the migrants came from. The grain of this diversity has been finer more at a regional scale as
compared to a neighborhood scale. This could be due a sense of social security, if not a social
support structure, within their own mono–ethnic neighborhood. As in the case of trade, the diversity
in the region also increased with increase in watercraft usage.
Bosphorus
The two halves make up only one half of the urban story in Istanbul. The other half is Bosphorus
strait, a 30 km long water stream that divides the city into two equals, qualitatively and
quantitatively. The urban growth of the city can be mapped as the response of the human settlement

Trends Of Reproduction Persist Into The 19th Century
Trends of Reproduction Persist into the 19th Century
Likewise, Ottoman sultanate's traditions of reproduction also translated into 19th century Istanbul.
Much like the royal concubines before them, after marriage, the role of women in Istanbul was still
to give birth to children and raise them to be successful adults. With a fertility decline in Istanbul in
the 19th century, it became more significant for women to give birth to her husband's children.
Duben and Behar states that pronatalists in Istanbul associated children with the future in hopes of
increasing fertilities. Hence, there is resurgence in the role of Istanbul women as mothers and
caregivers. Women were heavily encouraged to give birth to children in order to sustain the future,
which is clearly reiterated in the journal Kadınlar Dünyasi: "The purpose of marriage is the
future...Family means nation (millet), nation means family." Additionally, like the concubines, it is
through birthing and raising a child that a woman gains power – in this case represented through
citizenship. In the journal titled Rights, Reproduction, Sexuality and Citizenship in the Ottoman
Empire and Turkey, Ruth A. Miller suggests, "motherhood [was] made identical to citizenship."
Miller argues that through birthing and raising a child, a woman confirms that she is a beneficial
citizen in the society that is given "not a partial granting of rights but a full granting of rights, not an
incomplete acquisition of civic identity but a

Remember that Turkey is 98% Muslim and therefore those people will be doing their five daily

population of 75 million. Turkey's population of 75 million is very well educated, in this country it
is customary to go to 4 years of elementary school, 4 years of middle school, and 4 years of high
school. Although 98% of that 75 million (73,500,000) practices the Islamic religion, they all come

throughout the country. 75% of the population speaks Turkish, The second most spoken language is
Kurdish and third most is Arabic. The most popular foreign languages are 17% English, German 5%
and French 3%. They may have a lot of English Speakers because Turkey and U.S. are allies and are

Is Alexander The Great Still Alive?
She used to take me for a ride up to the Mermaid because she was the one who would ask, "Is
Alexander the Great still alive? And I would have to answer, "He lives and reigns, and conquers the

fountain and a beautiful statue from white marble in the center with a shape of a mermaid. This was
near the church of the Transfiguration. When we arrived at the creek, the stream that is at the height

Cultural And Intellectual Achievements Of The Ottoman Empire
As a single dynasty, the Ottoman Empire (1299–1923) had control of most of the Middle East and
parts of Europe for over six centuries. Through their tenure they had great cultural and intellectual
achievements; however, many historians focused more on the diverse social history of the
Ottomans, which perhaps was more intriguing topic given the functionality of the interatrial and
multi religious demographic society within the Ottoman borders. Perhaps the other challenge of
identifying cultural and intellectual achievements is that much of the of the Ottomans achievements
are categorized as part of the Islamic culture, which encompasses most of the Islamic nations and
not just the Ottoman Turks. Ottomans demonstrated great architectural

A New Poster Featuring Turkeys Prime Minister
In 2013 a new poster featuring Turkeys prime minister has appeared in every part of Istanbul, on
highway billboards, subways and busses. Wearing his usual dark suit there is Erdogan, Turkeys'
prime minister, staring down at the people with confidence and dedication like an action hero. Two
large words in bold letters are written next to his face: "Saglam Irade". Turkish for iron will. The
huge billboards build a feeling of claustrophobia that many Turks are used to by now: that Erdogan
is everywhere, in every newspaper column and on every TV channel. However, the poster which
some of his supporters have put up have been vandalized, torn and rewritten with new slogans like
Iron Fascists, Iron Corruption or Iron Enemy of the People by a group of Turkish protestors. This
scene is very familiar if you are living in Istanbul, Turkey. For the past two years Turkey has
witnessed inequality, injustice, limitation into almost every kind of freedom and unnecessary
violence in every part of its lives.
Over the last decade Erdogan has made himself the most powerful prime minister in Turkey's
history, the most successful elected leader in the Middle East and the West's idol for a modern
Muslim country. He attended a religious high school and grew up in a conservative neighborhood. A
member of the youth groups of Islamist parties, he was elected Istanbul's mayor in 1994 at age of

Crossing the Bosphorus: An Analysis of Eurasia's First Contemporary Intercontinental Bridge
I. Introduction
Given a global context of cities historically and very purposefully being situated along natural
bodies of water to take advantage of vast natural resources, it is no wonder that urban development,
industrialization, and localized population rise have increasingly implied the development of public
works in these metropolises. Among these works, infrastructures designed to facilitate transportation
across, rather than along, bodies of water such as rivers, straits, streams, etc., have proved
paramount for urban and economic growth and well–being, allowing an ever–growing workforce to
easily move both in and across cities' core and peripheries. Istanbul is one such city, where a
present–day metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants heavily occupies the banks of the
Bosphorus strait – a body of water that has both facilitated and complicated the city's development.
Figure 1: The Bosphorus Strait1
Crossing the Bosphorus has posed a challenge throughout the city's history, and the city has had a
long history. Through its incarnations as Byzantium, Constantinople, and Istanbul, the capital of

to expand the empire as soon as possible. The Ottoman empire, also known as a Turkish Empire was

Turkey : A Modern Country
The sun was barely peeking over the horizon, and I could hear the nearby mosques call out the on

Istanbul. It had been nearly 8 hours since my friend, Basil, and I started wandering around Istanbul's
most popular tourist sites, and it had almost been 6 hours since we had first gotten lost. Walking
around all night trying to figure out how we had gotten into such a sticky situation, we exited the
famous Blue Mosque and made our way back to the metro station, hoping now that they would be

Another downside to the public transportation in Istanbul is that the metro can get extremely
packed, which can be bad for people who have personal space issues, but can be easily dealt with if
you manage to be quick and grab a seat. "So how do we know when to get off?" I asked Basil in a
very confused tone. "When I tell you to, jump off", was his stern reply. I learned never to doubt a
confident person, but I still had no idea how he knew how to get around Istanbul. Unfortunately for
us, Basil was an idiot, he had absolutely no idea how to get around the city since it was his first time
their just like me. He had an innate feeling of confidence based off of no reason whatsoever, but I
didn't doubt him since I had no idea how to navigate the city and felt like a headless chicken in a
Chinese meat shop. All of a sudden I heard Basil call out to me from the outside, "dude get off the
train!", there was only a few seconds left before the train doors closed and I would be transported to
an unknown location with absolutely no idea of how to get around. I leaped off and watched the
doors close behind me while the train sped off to the next stop. "Next time you stick by my side",
Basil exclaimed. I couldn't agree more, and after that, I kept him in my sights. As we moved on and
marveled at the sight of the Blue

traditional cities and being built on two continents has arguably one of the richest histories of
architecture in the world. Rich periods in time can be exemplified through architectural examples

can be clearly observed through its visual markers left in architecture. Even today, the cultural

The city was rebuilt and featured incredible structures such as the Hagia Sophia which symbolize
the heights the Byzantine culture reached. Specific attributes that made living in such a city so
desirable were its trade locations and transportation between three different continents. However,
what made the city desirable also made it a target for those who wanted to take advantage of its
attributes. Over the next several hundred years, the city was subject to attacks from Persians, Arabs
and nomadic people trying to take over the city. Members of the fourth crusade, who also governed
the city for a short time, also attacked Constantinople. All these attacked lead to an attack in 1453 by
the Ottoman Turks led by Sultan Mehmet II. Due to the constant attacks led by others, the city 's
defenses were severely weakened, allowing the Ottoman Turks to conquer the city. The city was
then renamed to Istanbul, which became the third and last capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city
was the center for military campaigns aimed at enlarging the Ottoman empire in a dramatic manor.
By the mid 1500's, the city of Istanbul had a population of nearly 500,000. With a population this
large, the city was a major cultural, political and commercial nerve center. The Ottoman rule
remained until its forces were defeated in World War I and Istanbul was occupied by the allies.

Tracking and Finding Patterns to Earthquakes
Marmara Region of Istanbul has a history of catastrophic earthquakes such as the ones that struck on
17 August 1999 (Mw=7.4) and12 November 1999 (Mw=7.2). This led to the introduction of
Istanbul Earthquake Rapid Response and Early Warning System (IERREWS) as a preventive
measure for future earthquakes occurrences. This system consists of a dense network of 100 strong
motion recorders located in the metropolitan area of Istanbul, 10 near the Great Marmara Fault and
40 more located at important structures (Mert et al 2004). The early warning system of the
(IERREWS) is based on exceeding of predetermined thresholds values for the peak ground
acceleration (PGA) and Cumulative Absolute Velocity (CAV) it has three alarm levels. If the value
of CAV exceeds the threshold value it is considered a vote and within a specified time interval if the
threshold value is exceeded in 2 or 3 stations the first alarm is declared. The original CAV has been
modified to Bracketed CAV (BCAV) which is a summation of the maximum acceleration value
exceeding a threshold value within a specific time domain generally at a one second interval. A
recently modified version of the BCAV called the Windowed Bracketed CAV (BCAV–W) has been
suggested which integrates the maximum acceleration values for a window length of 8 seconds. For
the bracketed CAV window the threshold values suggested for the three alarm levels are 0.20, 0.40
and 0.70 m/s (Alcik et al 2009).

Architecture : The Theoretical Underpinning Of Architecture
Although architecture has no precise definition, it can range from being defined as an art, practice,
or complexity of designing something, to being a challenging profession in itself. It is said that
"architecture serves a purpose, stand erect, and is capable of moving us emotionally." For one to
understand how architecture is seen by the creator, it is important that we understand the theoretical
underpinning of architecture, of its time, and also how it advanced up to that time. "Architecture is
that great living creative spirit which from generation to generation, from age to age, proceeds,
persists, and creates, according to the nature of man, and his circumstances as they change. That is

Most of the times, we will find that almost each architect has his own theory or inspiration,
however, if we understand this, comparing buildings types and how they relate with their users and
nature would be clearer. We would then be able to comprehend how the structure connects with its
surroundings and even the way in which it came about. "Hagia Sophia, the church of holy wisdom,
sits majestically atop the plateau that commands the straits separating Europe and Asia." The former
basilica was built in 537 and is located near the acropolis of the ancient city of Byzantium. Being a

The Ottoman empire began in the area known as modern day Turkey by Turkic warrior groups in
the early 1300s, and it lasted until after World War I in the 1920s. The Ottoman empire's continued
success through the Early Modern Era and after is attributed to the empire's strong military, vast

Describe The Similarities And Differences Between Hammon...
The Ottoman Empire is one of the longest lasting empires in world history and over the centuries
many key figures played important roles in its successful sustainment. One of the key pieces to the
success of the Ottoman Empire and the reason that the empire lasted so long was because of the
people who worked behind the scenes. Jewish diplomats like Moses Hamon and Don Joseph Nasi
were key pieces in Ottoman relations with their Jewish subjects. Their techniques and methods of
diplomacy were similar in some way but differed in others. These two men are just a many key
Jewish figures but each man's techniques differed from the other and I am going to discuss how
each key leader was able to accomplish their goals.

  • 2. A Man Of An Interesting Imagination By Evliya Celebi A man of an interesting imagination, Evliya Çelebi was a Turk born in Istanbul in 1611. His travel account is both long and a comprehensive account of the Ottoman Empire at its greatest extent in the seventeenth century . His obsession with detail and unending curiosity led to his through documentation of the sites that we visited during his travels. Unfortunately, beyond the travel accounts written by Çelebi himself, there is not much other documentation about the life of Çelebi. Despite this, his extensive account does shed light on Çelebi's personality, and possibly the attitude of other Ottoman Turks during this time period. In particular, Çelebi goes into extensive detail of several important cities that he visited. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His description of the inclusion of sport, schools, public baths, markets, soup kitchens and places for travellers within the courtyard of the mosque to stay reveals that Istanbul was tolerant of outsiders and truly was the jewel of the Ottoman empire . This description of the Süleymaniye Mosque, while not outright describing the people of the main city of Istanbul, reveals the pride that Çelebi has for Istanbul. Additionally, in his chapter on Istanbul, Çelebi describes the people living in Galata, the settlement across the harbor. Çelebi describes the layout of the city in different quarters of Muslims, Jews and Armenians . Çelebi elaborates that there were no infidels allowed in the first castle, and that if any armed Christians were seen in the second castle, that they were killed immediately . On the profession of the people living in Galata, Çelebi put them into four categories of sailors, merchants, craftsmen and joiners/caulkers . It seems that Çelebi and other Ottomans tolerated these people mainly because they lived on the opposite side of the harbor and were required to run the economic engine of ships and trade for Istanbul. It was even noted that Çelebi would interact with the craftsmen of Galata, since he was of a "sociable and impertinent nature" . Çelebi's description of the various peoples living in Galata gives the impression that he held a disdain for people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Turkey 's Political Struggle : The Akp Vs. The Gulenists Turkey's Political Struggle: The AKP vs. The Gulenists On July 15th 2016, the nation of Turkey was shakened by an attempted military coup. The plot was originally planned for the following day. However, it is believed that the Turkish secret service became aware of the plan, forcing the conspirators to act earlier. The putschists were able to carry out synchronized attacks on the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Ankara, and Marmaris. In Ankara the parliament building was seized. The target in Marmaris was to capture and kill President Erdogan, who was vacationing at the Mediterranean resort town. The military action began at around 10:00 PM, with the closing of two Istanbul bridges connecting Europe and Asia. Coinciding with this, up to six F–16 fighter jets began a series of passes over the city of Ankara, refueling from four tanker planes that were flown from Incirlik air base. Incirlik is a large air force base were NATO and US forces are stationed. While these attacks were taking place in Turkey's two largest cities, helicopters from Cigli airbase carried commando teams to carry out attacks on the hotel where Tayyip Erdogan was presumably vacationing. Erdogan narrowly escaped and was able to fly to Istanbul. While en route, the television network seized, returned to the air. Using social media, Erdogan was able to rally his supporters and told them to take to the streets. Mosques broadcasted calls for support. Interestingly, a significant proportion of ... • 4. The Ottoman Empire and Judaism The reason the Jews went to the Ottoman Empire was because the Christians persecuted them because of their different beliefs. The Jews were so scared of what the Christians might do they wanted to settle in a safer place which the Ottomans offered them. The Ottomans offering them land was the best thing the Jews could have asked for. The Ottomans offered the Jews protection, offered them communal autonomy and tolerated their religious practices. The Ottomans at the time had a rule about non–Muslims having to pay a tax, which is called the Jitza. The Muslims considered Jews and Christians dhimmi or the people of the pact. The dhimmi we issued to pay the jitza, and where forced to follow these rules; prohibition against carrying fire arms, against riding horses, against building new houses or worship or even repairing old ones, against proselytism, against building homes higher than Muslim ones, and they must wear distinctive clothing. Even after all of these rules the Jewish community still thrived in the Ottoman Empire. The population of Jews in the Ottoman Empire was very distinct and was coming from different places. The most noticeable and most studied among the Jews in the Ottoman Empire were the Sephardim. The Sephardim had great political and cultural influence on the Ottoman Empire. The Jews became very valuable to the Ottomans because of the ties they had with Europe. Europeans brought new languages and technologies including the newest forms in medicine, ... Wearing his usual dark suit there is Erdogan, Turkeys' prime minister, staring down at the people with confidence and dedication like an action hero. Two large words in bold letters are written next to his face: "Saglam Irade". Turkish for iron will. The huge billboards build a feeling of claustrophobia that many Turks are used to by now: that Erdogan is everywhere, in every newspaper column and on every TV channel. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He came up with a plan known as the Crazy Project to build a second Bosphorus as well as a second Istanbul. Then he announced a new project for Taksim Square, which is the center of Istanbul's European side and considered the heart of the city. The square itself surrounds a tiny park called Gezi Park, which with the absence of buildings, offers at least a sense of free space and is also known for being the place of liberals. Erdogan wanted to build tunnels from beneath and replace Gezi Park with a shopping mall designed to look like Ottoman–era military barracks. Putting anything Ottoman–like in Taksim, a symbol of secular republic, felt like a sign of Erdogan's Islamic identity and thus caused a reaction on the people who supported the liberal's side. But there was a bigger problem, Erdogan wasn't the mayor of Istanbul. And he wasn't consulting his constituents there. When a local committee composed of historians and academics voted against the plan he simply had another committee made up from his own party and override the vote. This was what his rule had come to mean and when people heard about that they got angry. The protests began when activists gathered in Gezi Park to protest against its demolition. At first, it was just some angry citizens holding sit–ins. But the numbers quickly grew. Within a week the activists' tiny–sit spread into 70 cities. Many of the protestors were not ... • 7. The Destruction Of The Mongols Across Afro Eurasia And The... The destruction of the Mongols across Afro–Eurasia and the Black Death were the factors in which prompted the creation of the three important Islamic states. The three newly formed empires were the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals and they controlled regions from Southern Europe to the northern part of India. According to Pollard, "by the mid–sixteenth century the Mughals controlled the northern Indus river valley; the Safavids occupied Persia; and the Ottomans ruled Anatolia, the Arab, world, and much of southern and eastern Europe," (Pollard, Pg. 391). The Ottoman Empire lasted the longest of the three up until the early twentieth century due to their politics, religion tolerance, and develop of commerce. The Ottoman Empire's politics were very clever to achieve rapid success because its structure was based on adaptation and attractions. During Osman's reign, the sultan, the empire adopted many ideologies from their adversaries to persuade people to joined their improved kingdom. In the book, Pollard explains how, "[ the Ottomans] transformed themselves from warrior bands roaming the borderlands between Islamic and Christian worlds into rulers of a settled state...," (Pollard, Pg. 392). Osman was leading the small Ottoman Empire in 1299 in western Anatolia and he was slowly extending his settlements away from his Muslim neighbors. It was not allowed for Muslims to kill other Muslims. He had a number of soldiers called the Ghazis who were brave, loyal and fearless. These solders helped Osman tread into unknown land and spread his rule. Osman's name was becoming more known and after his death, people called him courageous strong and great. If an enemy doesn't strike from outside, an enemy may strike from inside. A civil war can cause many deaths and disrupt the focus of any leader. Suleiman would have to put all of his attention to people fighting inside his nation instead of focusing on incoming attacks from the outside. A lot of empires have fallen due to internal attacks. Interaction with other sectors was not too often which helps people be in an environment where everyone follows the same religion. There is also almost no interference from the government on how the leader chooses to run the Millets. Things like taxes and sometimes even laws aren't checked by the government because there aren't any rules against having different styles of living. Travelers from different religious backgrounds can now enter a land where they don't have to be feared of not being able to walk in and get hurt because of their differences. This encourages travelers, who are usually traders to come to this culturally diverse and peaceful land to trade their goods, instead of going to Europe where only one religion was accepted: Christianity. Suleiman put out the laws on streets so that all could read and understand what is allowed and what is not. This was important because now everyone knew the difference between right and wrong. In 700 BC, when the Greek Colonists which was led by King Byzas arrived in the area, they settled there because of the strategic location along the Bosphorus Strait, and late King Byzas named the city as Byzantium. • 11. Martin Luther King Jr. "We are not makers of history, we are made by history"– Martin Luther King Jr. To grasp the formation and development of a piece of land throughout the Ages to the current stature as the largest city in Turkey an explanation is required of through what medium and what time period the land was founded and through what agency the area has developed to the present– day and the urban complications that have arose and history is the vessel to such enlightenment. Per usual regarding the foundations of lands there are many folk tales relating to the foundation of Istanbul. The most accepted theory states, around 650 BC a tribe originating from the Aegan Sea had left their central city upon hopes of finding more fertile and prosperous land, this tribe was established under the leadership of Byzas. According to legend, an oracle's guidance must be sought before commencement could be granted, and upon receiving the oracle's advice to settle opposite the "land of the blind" Byzas set out to fulfil the prophecy (Wonderful Istanbul 2015.) The tribe's conquest for a land fitting of the oracle's prophecy was a time consuming quest, however fruitful. • 12. The Role of Istambul on Modern Literature Istanbul plays an important role in all kinds of art. It is especially important in literature. There are a lot of books set in Istanbul and we can also talk about famous writers who were inspired by the Istanbul views and who wrote beautiful stories because of Istanbul. There is also another group of writers, who were born and who wrote or write their works here, in Istanbul. This, of course, has its own print and meaning, because living in such a beautiful and great city like Istanbul cannot not to affect writers' works. When we talk about literature and Istanbul, we also have to mention famous writers and poets that wrote their stories and books in this city. Istanbul has a rich story, there have lived a lot of writers from the Ottoman Empire till nowadays. There were writers not only from the common people, but also from the Sultans. For example, Ottoman emperor Suleiman the Magnificent, who moved to Constantinople after the death of his father, was also an accomplished poet, he wrote his poems in both Persian and Turkish languages. His most famous verse under the pen name Muhibbi is this: "The people think of wealth and power as the greatest fate, But in this world a spell of health is the best state. Wha men call sovereignty is a worldly strife and constant war; Worship of God is the highest throne, the happiest of all estates." Another famous Turkish writer who was both born in Istanbul and wrote about Istanbul is Orhan Veli Kanık (1914–1950). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. The Major Characteristics Of The Central Mosques In Istanbul zid Mosque (after 1491), the Selim Mosque (1522), the Sehzade külliye (1548), and the Süleyman külliye (after 1550). They all have elevated clarity and logic and simplicity of design. A major characteristic of Ottoman mosques from the early period is the dominance of a central dome that covers a significant part of the prayer hall. The central dome increases dramatically in size and is often combined with a series of halfdomes and small domes that cascade from the central dome with the rule of Ottomans. A number of mosques have one, two, or four half–domes supporting the central dome. The domes in Ottoman architecture have a semi–circular flat profile. Hagia Sophia One of the main tourist attractions in Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia known as Ayasofya in Turkish, is also referred to as the Church of St Sophia. The building started as a church and was built based on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine II in 360 AD. It was destroyed in 404 AD by a mob and was rebuilt to grander proportions by Theodosius II in 405 AD only to be destroyed again in 532 during the week of riots known as the 'Nika Revolt'. Rebuilt under Emperor Justinian who was to construct a larger and more majestic building than its predecessors, which resulted in him shipping marble columns to Constantinople for the project from Baalbek in the Lebanon, when completed it was to remain one of the foremost churches despite being damaged by a series of earthquakes in 553, 557 and again in 558. • 16. An Essay On The Blue Mosque The Blue Mosque, or as its mother language call it The Sultan Ahmet Camii, is an amazing and an interesting Islamic piece of architect located in Istanbul, Turkey. The blue tiles of the inside, adorning its interior walls, are the main reason why people call it the blue mosque. I found it interesting to write about such a historical piece of architecture that was built during the rule of Ahmed I (or the first) in the early 17th century. A tomb of the founder, like many other mosques, a hospice and a madrasa as well, all together were found and contained under the name of Külliye in the mosque. The mosque's function is still a mosque, as it was the first imperial mosque for more than forty years in that time, and was never converted into anything, not a church nor a museum. Non–Muslims are not to enter during the daily five prayers for half an hour or so, however, it is a popular tourist attraction in Istanbul. • 18. Cultural Culture In Turkey Culture is defined as "the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time", according to Merriam–Webster (2016). Even though Turkey as a sovereign nation is fairly young, it's cultural roots can be dated as far back as Alexander the Great. The Turkic people have an extremely long history and a very diverse culture. Long before the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the area had seen its' fair share of war and strife. Since the Hellenization of the Anatolian Peninsula by Alexander the Great, the area has seen a constant power struggle for an area that was known as the Crossroads of the World (modern day Istanbul). Since Istanbul was once the main trading hub of the known world, it's one of the most contributing factors for the countries' rich and diverse culture. It is important to understand the differences between cultures so that we may better understand our similarities. When met with other cultures it is possible to be offensive without knowing it. Being that Turkey has many cultures that differ vastly, it could be quite easy for an unknowledgeable tourist to be offensive. Taking the time to do research before traveling to new areas might allow a person to save face, and avoid offense or embarrassment when visiting foreign places. • 20. Ethnic And Cultural Diversity : A Global Scale, Asia Minor... Two–Halves On a global scale, Asia Minor (the Eastern Half) has supported human agglomerations since the ancient times. Migration to Europe (the Western Half) by land (as the primary means of migration) would have to be around the Black Sea and the north being too cold, a route through Istanbul became a natural choice. Istanbul as a fortress–city was established in the 6th century B.C. on the Thracian side (another name for Western region). The city gained in expanse to both sides as trade through water in region grew. Initial migrants from Anatolia (another name for Eastern region) agglomerated in a segregated pattern. As the population grew, urban functions became derivatives of these patterns. Both halves have had a history of ethnic and cultural diversity due to the variety of regions from where the migrants came from. The grain of this diversity has been finer more at a regional scale as compared to a neighborhood scale. This could be due a sense of social security, if not a social support structure, within their own mono–ethnic neighborhood. As in the case of trade, the diversity in the region also increased with increase in watercraft usage. Bosphorus The two halves make up only one half of the urban story in Istanbul. The other half is Bosphorus strait, a 30 km long water stream that divides the city into two equals, qualitatively and quantitatively. The urban growth of the city can be mapped as the response of the human settlement on it banks to this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. Trends Of Reproduction Persist Into The 19th Century Trends of Reproduction Persist into the 19th Century Likewise, Ottoman sultanate's traditions of reproduction also translated into 19th century Istanbul. Much like the royal concubines before them, after marriage, the role of women in Istanbul was still to give birth to children and raise them to be successful adults. With a fertility decline in Istanbul in the 19th century, it became more significant for women to give birth to her husband's children. Duben and Behar states that pronatalists in Istanbul associated children with the future in hopes of increasing fertilities. Hence, there is resurgence in the role of Istanbul women as mothers and caregivers. Women were heavily encouraged to give birth to children in order to sustain the future, which is clearly reiterated in the journal Kadınlar Dünyasi: "The purpose of marriage is the future...Family means nation (millet), nation means family." Additionally, like the concubines, it is through birthing and raising a child that a woman gains power – in this case represented through citizenship. In the journal titled Rights, Reproduction, Sexuality and Citizenship in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, Ruth A. Miller suggests, "motherhood [was] made identical to citizenship." Miller argues that through birthing and raising a child, a woman confirms that she is a beneficial citizen in the society that is given "not a partial granting of rights but a full granting of rights, not an incomplete acquisition of civic identity but a ... CEE 262: Structures & the Urban Environment Sol Taubin (staubin@princeton.edu) Crossing the Bosphorus: An Analysis of Eurasia's First Contemporary Intercontinental Bridge I. Introduction Given a global context of cities historically and very purposefully being situated along natural bodies of water to take advantage of vast natural resources, it is no wonder that urban development, industrialization, and localized population rise have increasingly implied the development of public works in these metropolises. Among these works, infrastructures designed to facilitate transportation across, rather than along, bodies of water such as rivers, straits, streams, etc., have proved paramount for urban and economic growth and well–being, allowing an ever–growing workforce to easily move both in and across cities' core and peripheries. Istanbul is one such city, where a present–day metropolitan population of 17 million inhabitants heavily occupies the banks of the Bosphorus strait – a body of water that has both facilitated and complicated the city's development. Tracking and Finding Patterns to Earthquakes Marmara Region of Istanbul has a history of catastrophic earthquakes such as the ones that struck on 17 August 1999 (Mw=7.4) and12 November 1999 (Mw=7.2). This led to the introduction of Istanbul Earthquake Rapid Response and Early Warning System (IERREWS) as a preventive measure for future earthquakes occurrences. This system consists of a dense network of 100 strong motion recorders located in the metropolitan area of Istanbul, 10 near the Great Marmara Fault and 40 more located at important structures (Mert et al 2004). The early warning system of the (IERREWS) is based on exceeding of predetermined thresholds values for the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and Cumulative Absolute Velocity (CAV) it has three alarm levels. If the value of CAV exceeds the threshold value it is considered a vote and within a specified time interval if the threshold value is exceeded in 2 or 3 stations the first alarm is declared. The original CAV has been modified to Bracketed CAV (BCAV) which is a summation of the maximum acceleration value exceeding a threshold value within a specific time domain generally at a one second interval. A recently modified version of the BCAV called the Windowed Bracketed CAV (BCAV–W) has been suggested which integrates the maximum acceleration values for a window length of 8 seconds. For the bracketed CAV window the threshold values suggested for the three alarm levels are 0.20, 0.40 and 0.70 m/s (Alcik et al 2009). 2.5 ElarmS: The ElarmS algorithm is a ... The Ottoman Empire is one of the longest lasting empires in world history and over the centuries many key figures played important roles in its successful sustainment.
