Common Stereotypes In Modern Family
"Modern Family," a television show created and written by ABC Network is one of the funniest, most relatable and cleaver shows that has ever hit our
television screens. "Modern Family" centers on the lives of three families living in modern day Los Angles, California. Jay – aged husband and Gloria
Pritchett – sexy Latino wife are the modern day California couple. Gloria has a son named Manny from her previous marriage. Jay's son, Mitchell, is a
very feminine man married to an even more feminine man, Cameron. They are the modern day gay couple who adopt a Vietnamese girl– Lily. Jay's
daughter, Claire, is a married woman to Phil – the self–proclaimed "cool dad." Together they have three children, Hailey – stereotypical dumb teenager,
Alex – nerdy pre–teen, and a son named Luke who sometimes gets left out of the crazy busy schedule that surrounds them. All ... Show more content on

Jay and Gloria are at a soccer game and Gloria instantly gets hit on by a man her age, while Jay steps into the conversation and gets mistaken for her
father. Right away I noticed a common stereotype that people perceive – older man who is married to younger woman is seen as a cradle robber.
Speaking from experience, my mother is 20 years younger than my father and they are always viewed as non–equals. Then the shot gets cut to Phil and
Claire trying to juggle ten things at once while dealing with their three children – the stereotype that we observed is how families like that are always
hectic and how the dad of a teenager tries to be cool. Lastly we get to see Mitchell and Cam in an airplane on the way home with their newly adopted
daughter. An old lady says, "She's an angel. You and you're wife must be thrilled!" The stereotype has come and gone that only opposite sex couples
adopt/have children. "Modern Family" has it all; gays, straights, whites, Latinos, old, young, but mostly they are all beautiful in their own

The Dystopia Of Anne Washburn 's Play, Mr. Burns : A Post...
The kinds of popular culture that survive in the dystopia of Anne Washburn's play, Mr. Burns: A Post
–Electric play addresses our own engagement with
popular culture in many ways. The purposes of popular culture sometimes change or remain the same. Popular culture is with us throughout our lives
in times of triumph and anxiety. Washburn's play focuses on a group of people who recall an episode ofThe Simpsons during a time of crisis. They
compare lines and characters in order to better understand the environment around them and they talk about it to entertain themselves. Recalling an old
episode was an activity for the characters to spend time during a period of nuclear disaster. This type of entertainment gives the audience interest, relief,
and excitement in a dull boring life. Their form of engagement with popular culture is similar to ours through interaction and point of view.
The first Act of Mr. Burns: A Post
–Electric Play is set during a time of a dystopian society because of a nuclear disaster in the country. People did not
have a form of entertainment because they had no electricity, television, and digital entertainment. They had to rethink the way that they entertained
themselves. Therefore, in the first act, a group of people sits around a campfire to talk about The Simpsons: Cape Feare episode. This scene addresses
our own engagement with popular culture through interaction. People of all backgrounds meet and bond with each other through popular culture. For

Satire In Family Guy
What is a stereotype? The Free Dictionary defines a stereotype as "a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning
and held in common by members of a group" (Stereotype). Although many people may not realize it, stereotypes influence how they interact with
others each day. People judge others because of their race, ethnicity, religion, and heritage before they even know the person. These judgements come
from stereotypes they encounter in their lives. There are plenty of news stories, movies, and television shows that portray these stereotypes. However,
Seth McFarland's television show "Family Guy" uses satire to highlight stereotypes in today's society. The show's use of ethnic humor includes a lot of

Because there are a lot of jokes and news stories that target Muslims like this, many Muslim and Arabic people are subjected to this treatment. If
there were none of these jokes on the air or if news anchors told more positive stories about Muslims and Arabs, this cultural group would have an
easier time in society (TEDxYouth). Overall, "Family Guy" and other media outlets portray Muslims and Arabs as terrorists, and it makes people afraid
of them because of the stereotype. In addition, another stereotype "Family Guy" likes to make fun of is people of Asian heritage. Seth McFarland
has written a lot of episodes in which he uses many Asian stereotypes. For instance, in one episode, he has Peter take an Asian student to the SAT to
use as his calculator on the test, as he tells the student to "do math" (Family Guy Season 5 Episode 3). Although this might seem like a positive
stereotype for Asians, this can also negatively impact them. There has been studies that have shown that Asian people feel offended by this stereotype.
Dr. Art Markman did a study in which he had an Asian and a white participant in a room. It is important to note that in the study, the white person
"was actually one of the experimenters posing as a participant" (Markman). In the study, each participant was asked to fill out one of two packets.
Each packet had different problems in it, where "One packet had math problems in it, while the

Baz Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
The 1996 film, Romeo and Juliet, is Baz Luhrmann's interpretation of William Shakespeare's play by the same name. This film is part of Baz
Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy where Luhrmann uses a theatre motif in each, with poetry and language being the motif used in Romeo and Juliet.
This play was originally written by William Shakespeare who was an English poet, playwright, actor and a man who is considered one of the greatest
contributors to English literature as he invented over 1700 now common words and wrote some of the world's most famous plays. Romeo and Juliet
was written in 1595 so Luhrmann had to give the film a contemporary twist but keeps the original themes of forbidden love and young romance to

The costumes used in Luhrmann's film are very modern as using the original Elizabethan style costumes would make the film more historical and
therefore would not appeal to a younger audience. Luhrmann has used two distinctive costume styles to help the audience distinguish the difference
between the two families. For the Montague family, Luhrmann has put the characters in unbuttoned, bright coloured Hawaiian shirts and given the
males short blonde hair to link to these characters beachside lifestyles. For the Capulet family, Luhrmann has used stylish but sinister looking costumes
such as vests, and silver heeled boots to show the audience how these men are similar to Mexican drug

Romeo And Juliet Comparative Essay
Baz Luhrman's filmed adaptation of William Shakespeare's play, Romeo + Juliet was released in 1996 and starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire
Danes as the leading roles. The film brought the ancient script to a modern time based in Verona, Italy. The Montagues and Capulets are represented
as enemy mafia empires and swords are replaced with guns. This analytical essay will examine the various dramatic elements featured in the film,
such as, roles and relationships, tension and the mood and atmosphere displayed throughout the film. Similar to the original script, the film focuses
heavily on the roles and relationships between characters, especially Romeo and Juliet's love arc. Viewers experience Romeo and Juliet's tragic love
story progress over the weekend, from their first meeting at the party to their double suicide at the tomb. The films shows viewers that their
relationship with one another is the key relationship in the film. The majority of the film revolves about their love for each other and shows on
various occasions how much Romeo and Juliet fight for the chance to be together. Their love is the core storyline of the film. An example of how

Lisa V. Guerrero Street Case Study
Lisa, who is a neighbor of Danny, lived peacefully next to him for fifteen years on Guerrero Street, decided to build a gazebo. Lisa frequently used
this gazebo throughout the years; however, she was not aware that the gazebo she built was on property belonging to Danny. After a month, Lisa
constructed a fence between her and Danny's yard, inclosing the gazebo on Lisa's side of the fence with no complaints from Danny. Fifteen years
later, Danny had a survey done on his property, and discovers that Lisa had actually built the gazebo on his land without his consent, and brings a
lawsuit to evict Lisa from the land. Does Lisa have a defense for her actions? Yes, Lisa has a defense called, adverse possession. In order for Lisa to

What this entails is that the actual sole physical occupation of the land with the intent to keep it solely for the person occupying the property must
be establish. Lisa demonstrated this by construction a fence between her house and Danny's. In fact, by doing this, she establish sole possession of
the property in question. Once more, by fencing in the property, and the fact that Danny knew what she was doing because he lived next door and
did not contest, showed Lisa was being open, visible, and notorious with her actions. She also was continuous and peaceable with her actions
because during the fifteen years of usage, there were no issues with Danny, and he never complained that her actions were wrong. Only after fifteen
years and a survey, did the ownership questions come up. Lastly, Lisa believed that the property was hers and never asked or obtained permission
before erecting the fence. Since all the elements coexist, Lisa has a legal right to claim adverse possession to the property. Furthermore, the state has a
statutory period for adverse possession of ten years. What this means is that Lisa must have occupied the property for the full statutory period, and this
action must have coexisted with the other elements of adverse possession before the statute of limitations runs out. It was not until fifteen years later,
and only after the survey, Lisa found out

Comparing Two Different Versions Of Romeo And Juliet
Im Shakespeare tragedy , Romeo and Juliet have fallen for each other. They are faced with many challenges throughout their love which eventually lead
to their death. TheyВґre two different versions of this play;one is by Baz Luhrmann which is more modern and has really nothing to do with the play
then there is the one by Franco Zeffirelli which has more things in common with the actual play. In Act V Scene iii ВЁThe Death SceneВЁ both
directors have different ways of showing how the ВЁtwo star–crossed loversВЁ die. There were many differences between the Zeffirelli and Luhrmann
film. The part that stood out to me the most was how Juliet takes her life away when she sees that Romeo is dead. In the Zeffirelli version Juliet
grabs RomeoЕ› dagger and stabs herself because she sees Romeo had killed himself with poison. However,in the Luhrmann version Juliet sees
Romeo before he dies and actually gets to talk to him and Juliet sees him die.Juliet can not take the pain of seeing her Romeo die so she decides to
take her own life to but instead of using a dagger she uses a gun.

Comparing Zefferelli's Film
Zefferelli vs. Baz Luhrmann – Shirin Shahsavari – 3/10/16 Although Zefferelli's film is a better book–to–movie adaptation of Shakespeare's famous
play, "Romeo and Juliet", Baz Luhrmann's version is a lot more entertaining and comprehensible to most teenagers because of its modern setting.
Perhaps, one of the most substantial visible contrasts between the two films is the setting. Zeffirelli's film takes place in a classical setting, accurately
representing the actual historic period in which the play was written in. However, in Luhrmann's version the setting has been completely transformed to
make the film more modern and therefore easier for the audience to understand and relate to. The modern setting makes the film more intriguing and
apprehensible

Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play
With the title alone, it is easy to assume that Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play would not be a typical play. Unlike other performances, Mr. Burns is
not a simple narrative. Quite literally, it is a play within a play. The narrative lacks structure due to how it stands as a social commentary on the
importance of entertainment to society. Mr. Burns began after what seems to be a traumatic event that has affected everyone's way of life. From what
we see as our survivors huddled around a campfire in the woods. They recount a normalcy of how life used to be, an episode of The Simpsons.
Throughout the recounts on what happened in the episode "Cape Feare", the play introduces a new character which gives exposition to the current
landscape of the United States. As the play continues into its second and third act, there is a large shift on the scenery, lighting, etc. as the cast begins to
recreate the episode of The Simpsons which they discuss in the previous act. While it is easy to get lost on why everything is happening, why they are
performing, it comes to the central conflict of reclaiming normalcy of the world which has past, an episode of television. As the performance goes on,
the costume design represents where our characters are at in their timeline. While, in the first act, the characters are dressed in stereotypical
post–apocalyptic attire, it does vary in from what we are presented in the last two acts. Around the campfire, the characters are dressed in

Donald Glover's Remedial Chaos Theory
The popular meme of Donald Glover walking into a room filled with chaos originally derives from the NBC's comedic sitcom, Community which aired
from 2009 to 2015 ("Community"). During the episode that this scene is from, "Remedial Chaos Theory", Troy and Abed host a housewarming party
for their new apartment, inviting their study group. When the pizza arrives, Jeff decides to roll a die to decide who fetches it. According to Abed, this
creates six possible timelines (in addition to the main timeline),, in which he imagines all of them with magnified creativity. "Remedial Chaos Theory"
was highly received by Community fans, receiving a rating of 9.8 on the International Movie Database website ("Remedial Chaos Theory"). Overall,
this specific episode continues the show's parodical sitcom style with alternating timelines, while further elaborating on the characterization of the study
group, creating an entertaining episode. Despite alternating the timeline... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

makes the decision to throw the gift away, neglecting his initial intentions of seeking vengeance. This displays the subtle differences that one minor
change, a different person going to fetch the pizza, makes in the study group. One sequenceemphasizes Pierce's hateful and vengeful side, while another
shows he's capable of feeling empathy and regret. This is only one of many examples within the show where the writers utilize the seven different

Literature as defined by Merriam–Webster Dictionary is "the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age". Literature
comes in different variations, languages, and from different countries. Canadian literature is literature made exclusively by an author of Canadian
descent that understands what life is as a Canadian. The Canadian play I chose to read was Toronto Mississippi by Joan Macleod. The play has
different themes that can be used as to teaching tools in Canadian English classes. The theme of being handicapped is the theme that the play revolves
around. The talented playwright Joan Macleod has yet again made another successful play and should be used as teaching tool to teach students in

As the play progresses, Jhana's father is slowly introduced as King; he is an Elvis impersonator and is constantly touring so he is rarely ever
home with Jhana or Maddie. With the constant abandonment of her husband, Maddie is given the very strenuous task of having to take care of
her 18 year old mentally handicapped daughter and having to deal with Bill who eventually falls in love with her. Having to deal with all this
affects Maddie and there are points in the play where she snaps at Jhana for the stuff she does. We see Maddie has gotten used to all the stuff Jhana
does that when King returns home and says "Jhana's real weird, eh" she responds by saying "what else is new" (Macleod 41) showing how she has
gotten used to Jhana's antics, yet still gets agitated by what Jhana does. Bill falls in love with Maddie and acts as a father figure to Jhana while her
father is touring in North America. Maddie is still in love with King but every time he leaves it affects Maddie in a very negative way. King chooses
his job over his family thus forcing Maddie into a state of sadness and this is evident when she says "Hold on to my perfect little girl. (holding Jhana)
You were so warm. To hell with that bed of mine that had suddenly become so big and icy. I've got Jhana." (Macleod 58). Maddie realizes how true of
a friend Bill has become that by the end of the play she considers Bill and expresses this by saying "My family is down on the floor" (Macleod 94). She

Media Analysis of Gender Essay
First of all, in The Simpsons, the scene where we get into the actual plot of the story opens with Marge and Lisa walking into a department store
that sells dolls. The gender stereotype that girls are only interested in playing with dolls is reinforced here as a huge selection of Malibu Stacy dolls
is on display with a throng of screeching, bloodthirsty girls tearing the store apart. Lisa says, "I'm warning you mom, I might get a little crazy." and
immediately knocks down a girl and snatches another in a choke–hold to be the first in line for the new Malibu Stacy doll. In the very next scene we
have the whole family in the car with Homer driving. He is baking a cupcake with an easy–bake–oven that he bought from the mall. Marge advises him

The show makes an obvious distinction between how men/boys and women/girls act. Anyway, the episode continues with lisa playing with her
doll pretending that Malibu Stacy is giving a speech at the U.N, but Lisa is disappointed when she realizes that the new and improved doll says
sexist remarks such as "don't ask me, I'm just a girl" and "let's buy make up so that boys will like us!". Lisa goes on a rant about how "millions of
girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act! That they cannot be anything more than vacuous ninnies...!"and gets really mad when
Bart does not understand why she is so upset. The difference in communication styles is shown here as Lisa is more adept with words than Bart is
as Bart can only give Lisa a stupid reply like "that's what I was going to say." This illustrates the stereotype that girls are more expressive and
sensitive than boys are. On the other hand, Marge plays the more traditional housewife as her mind never delves into issues that are not relevant to
the domestic center; she is not privy to relevant discussions on social issues like Lisa and cannot understand why Lisa is so upset. She said that Lisa
had been speaking up "an awful lot lately." This suggests that typical lady–like behavior does not include speaking out and that the mother should
enforce positive female behavior. Additionally, in

Reflection Paper On The Solar Eclipse
While being a very excited fan of Mythology, Astrology and this year's upcoming solar eclipse, I decided to embark on a journey with my two
daughters, Jazmine (4 and proud of it), & Layla (terrible 2.5's) Goins to experience the eclipse at its fullest in Totality town (Andrews) North
Carolina. Second thought's about this were weighing heavily in my head. Especially in the wake of the recent tragedy that took place in
Charlottesville, Virginia. But being that this was a very important historical moment, I really wanted this experience not only for myself but for my
daughters also. So with out any more hesitation, I said a quick prayer and set forward towards my destination. 2.5 hrs later we were in a thriving
community where everyone shared the same enthusiasm that I did for the upcoming event. So with out further ado, I unfolded my daughters blanket
under a shade tree so they would be comfortable, and commenced a count down for the event. After settling in we were greeted by a fellow stargazer
whom asked & offered a pair of glasses to my daughters in order to view the eclipse. Without hesitation, they replied, received their glasses, and gave
her the biggest hug their short arms could muster. Moments later, I was greeted by Stephen St. Claire, An artist from Asheville,North Carolina whom
with a warm welcome, invited my daughters and myself to join himself and his wife Joy St. Claire, under the trees where everyone else was, and not
alone. Understanding immediately the potential and power in this, I agreed, gathered my things and shuffled my daughters in their direction. Once we
made it there, my daughters as always, hugged, greeted, and told them their names and ages. In like fashion, they were bombarded with the same.
Once we were settled sitting down, Joy being the "SAINT" that she is immediately started interacting with my daughters as if she had known them
their whole life, and vice versa. While Steven and I had a very interesting, wholehearted, truthful, fellowship amongst ourselves, about what's going on
in today's world. As our conversation continued, he asked if I felt as if there was a change from then until now. Anxious to convey my answer

Television Sitcom : A Tv Sitcom
In a 1988 BBC 'network' examination the former Chief Executive of Channel 4 Jeremy Isaccs said of sitcom "It is a form in which it is impossible
to bring new work. It is the most conventional form in British television,"(Neale & Krutnik, 1990) while this comment is nearly 30 years old I feel
Isaccs point still stands. Since television 's rise to dominance in the 50's and 60's television sitcom hadn't progressed much from their radio sitcom
forerunners, by the 1980's the cliche and the tropes were so ingrained in British culture that it could have been viewed as a tired old medium. However
I would argue that the archetypes, cliches and tropes that may seem old hat are actually the key to the successful rise of the surreal and post–modern...

In writing about the translation of The Office Jim Benson notes that studios were being a bit precatious in developing a new wave of sitcoms as
comedy had seen a slump in the decade before unable to emulate the success of Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends and Seinfeld. This slump in
interest from the US market was believed to be because the modern viewer didn 't have the same connection the family home life and domestic
situations as the generation before, therefore just like Neale and Krutnik pointed out something new had to be added into the mix. Benson states that
the US networks tried to tap into the "obsession with Ultra–long work weeks, technology and pop–culture." This almost satirical view of society is best
explored in the office as the representation of 'real people' is both subtle and extreme blurring the lines between surreal and factual.
The Simpsons (Fox, 1989) is America's longest running sitcom, the youtube channel 'Now You See It' suggests that this is because of "The Perfect

Romeo And Juliet Comparative Essay
Baz Luhrmann's adaptation on Romeo and Juliet has many similarities and contrasting elements with the original, made by Shakespeare. The
casting, special, and Scenery of the adaptation and the original all have some things in common or are contrasting to each other. The Baz
Luhrmann's adaptation casting has some good and bad picks. The role of Romeo played by Leonardo DiCaprio was an example of a perfect casting.
Leonardo fit the role impeccably, his physical appearance and voice match's what you would imagine from the original manuscript. On the other hand,
Lady Capulet casted by Diane Verona, was an example of a terrible casting. In the manuscript Lady Capulet was very proper and prestigious, however
in the Baz Luhrmann's adaptation she was very improper. The casting of Mercutio by Harold Perrineau has both similarities and contrasting to the

One concept of communication demonstrated in the episode is called selective perception. Selective perception is the perceptual distortion that arises
from only paying attention to what we expect and ignoring what we do not expect (Verderber, 2014). When first noticing Hurley, most people would
not expect his secret; he is an overweight man with long curly hair and a scruffy beard. During his flashback, it is discovered that prior to boarding
the plane he was a fast food worker that lived with his mother. When conversing with Charlie, who is an ex–band member and recovering heroin
addict, Hurley reveals that he won the lottery and is actually worth millions of dollars; Charlie does not believe him and storms off. Charlie did not buy
the announcement Hurley gave him for the reason that Charlie had already created a perception of Hurley. Charlie expected Hurley to be a low life
because of his scruffy appearance and simple minded mannerisms. Yet, what he ignored was that this shabby man was actually drowning in wealth.
Furthermore, when people are not like you would expect them to be, not only can perception barriers be created but also communication barriers. One
type of communication barrier can occur during intercultural conversations. Intercultural communication is characterized as interactions that occur
between people whose cultures are so different that the communication is altered (Verderber, 2014). With Jin being the only non

Comparing Family Guy And The Simpsons
Family Guy and The Simpsons have differences in comedic style and family friends and similarities in family personalities .
To begin off with, Family Guy and The Simpsons have differences in comedic style. Family Guy uses humor that has to be taken lightly, Family Guy
overuses a joke until it dies and Family Guy takes a joke from zero to hundred in about six seconds. The Simpsons use humor that is funny, but doesn't
kill your braincells. For instance, in Family Guy there was an episode mocking terrorism after terrorist threats. The Simpsons wouldn't touch the
topic of terrorism until several year later at least. The Simpsons does not overuse a joke until it dies. For example in Family Guy if a joke is made
about a song they play the whole song. In The Simpsons they will parody a song for a few seconds. In The Simpsons it doesn't go from zero to a

Situation comedy has used conventions satire and parody is used to reinforce/challenge ideas and stereotypes through the mocking of societal issues.
In this essay I will discuss about how stereotypes and common ideas are constructed, and how they are supported or challenged in The Simpsons and
Modern Family through the use of satire, and parody. The first sitcom viewed wasThe Simpsons (in–class viewing),and is used to explore and support
the common idea of 'consumer capitalism' in society plus the idea of 'consumer debt' through the use of exaggeration and parody. The other sitcom
viewed (home viewing) was the Modern Family episode called 'Sleeper' which constructs and challenges both parental stereotypes whilst supporting the
stereotypical traits of gay couples through the use of exaggeration and irony.
In the 'Maple' episode of The Simpsons, the main social issues explored are culture, capitalism and consumer debt. Consumer debt, although only
brief, is explored when Lisa attempts to buy 'MyPhonies' to make herself look cool, however she can't afford them. Satire in the form of exaggeration
is used to explore the idea of making the earphones much more expensive than what they should have been. This ... Show more content on

In the Modern Family episode called 'Sleeper', common stereotypes that are challenged or supported are homosexual couples, housewives and fatherly
figures. The first stereotype, gay couples, is reinforced in this episode with the use of exaggeration. The gay couple, Cameron and Mitchell, are
constructed in this episode to be feminine and emotional. Although the pair are seen as stereotypical, Cam is more feminine in this episode, as he is
very flamboyant and overreacts more compared to Mitch who isn't as hot–headed and dresses more like a man. Through the use of exaggeration, the
actions of both Cam and Mitch are overstated and help to reflect the modern day stereotype of gay

Comparing Luhrmann's Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet (1996), was directed by Baz Luhrmann, and was adapted for film by Craig Pearce and Baz Luhrmann. This movie
is modern and captivating, using a combination of Shakespearean language with pop music and intensely colorful visuals. Leonardo di Caprio stars as
the passionate Romeo, and Clare Danes portrays the alluring Juliet. In the movie, Luhrmann portrays the families who live in Verona Beach as gangster
types, brandishing guns, and fighting amongst each other. The main themes of the play include love, autonomy vs. societal influence, and the
inevitability of fate. One major theme of the movie is love. Romeo's and Juliet's so–called love for each other is really just infatuation. Teenagers have
the same feelings today that they had in Shakespearean times. Teens are very dramatic, falling in love every other week. They think that the person
they find in school is the person they're going to be with for the rest of their lives. We all know that this rarely happens. They truly believe they're in
love, because it seems all encompassing, but they really don't know what love is until they marry someone who's willing to get up in the middle of
the night to change a diaper. They are in love for the sake of being in love.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
societal influence. Romeo and Juliet had to keep their relationship a secret due to their families' feuding, their loyalty to their family, and other outside
influences. Juliet was unable to make her own decision regarding marriage because her parents had arranged for her to marry Paris. In today's society,
young people have more autonomy because of the use of social media. Adolescents are often in a state of rebellion in an attempt to control their own
destiny. The timeless goal of autonomy influences adolescents to detach from authoritarian parents. Their desire for autonomy, and peer acceptance
sometimes leads to risky

The Influence Of Family Sitcoms In The 1970's
The family sitcom has always been a form of entertainment that has brought people together, and has played a pivotal role in American society. Family
values often change over time to reflect the issues being faced by each family member generationally. Media and entertainment are often affected by
the social and political issues of their time. Many of these issues, and the way that these issues have shaped American values, have often influenced the
content of television sitcoms. Although family sitcoms often reflect the values of real American families, in the 1970s, many television families had
very few flaws, as opposed to the real families of the 1970s. Meanwhile, television families more accurately represented real families in the 1980s. ...

Before the seventies, family values were more conservative and traditional with the popularization of the nuclear family in the fifties and sixties.
The nuclear family was "...built around the nucleus of the mother and father..." (Stanley, 2012). This changed in the 1970s due to the economic
and social struggle inflicted by the Cold War and Vietnam (Stanley, 2012). Family size began to go down because people could not afford big
families anymore. This trend continued into the eighties when, "...the average family size dropped from 3.58 people in 1970 to 3.29 people in
1980..." (Suro, 1991). Because of financial struggle, family size was less of a priority for the average family. Another change in the 1980s was that
marriage was not valued as much as it was in previous years. When a group of high school seniors were surveyed, there was "...a modest (4%–5%)
decline in the late 1980s in the fraction of female seniors saying that they thought it very likely that they would stay married for a lifetime to the same
person..." (Thornton & Young–Demarco, 2001). Because of the lack of optimism in the 1970s, young women were not as enthusiastic about marriage
as previous generations. Because of social, political, and economic struggles and advancements, family values changed between these two

Family Guy Satire
When I was in middle school, I first discovered Family Guy late at night while I was channel surfing in my hotel room. Usually, cartoons are never
shown at night, simply because most kids are asleep by that time. I didn't find anything decent, until I saw this cartoon. I figured it was for children,
but I after I saw the theme song, I second guessed that. I continued to watch the show and even though it clearly had adult humor, I still continued to
watch it, because I found it hilarious. There are a lot of shows, like Family Guy that have people take in so much offense, because it is only seen for
comedic purposes. I will be covering the cruel broadcasting tactics that Family Guy was placed in with the FOX channel, due to its low ratings, adult
humor and sexual themes, as well as its satirical episodes, which caused the cancellation of the show twice throughout its run and I will be going
through the reasons behind it.

Effective Dramatic Imagery in Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et...
Through the use of dramatic imagery in Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est," Owen is able to recreate a dramatic war scene and put the reader
right on the front lines. The use of language is very effective in garnering the readers' attention and putting the dire images of war into the mind. He
emphasizes that war is upsetting and appalling at times. There is nothing sweet about it. He only strengthens his argument by the use of strong
descriptive words and vivid figurative language. The utilization of these techniques gives the poem a strong meaning and provides the reader with a
vivid portrayal of the events that took place during this grisly occurrence. The poem is divided into three sections with each part dealing with a different

Many of the soldiers are marching barefoot and are "Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots" (7). The platoon is so exhausted that they do not
realize they are about to be under attack by deadly gas. The picture that Owen paints through words in the beginning of the poem is one of darkness
and disarray. The reader now knows that nothing good will come out of this night. The second stanza reveals the attack on the platoon. Owen's
description of the attack is an "ecstasy of fumbling" (9) while the soldiers attempt to put on their masks. This line suggests that panic has consumed
the entire platoon. The reader is able to see that the mood changes drastically from one of tiredness to extreme alarm. He illustrates the helmets as
being "clumsy" (10). Owen then goes on to tell of one soldier that did not get his mask on in time. "And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime..." (12)
is the description that Owen gives of the dying soldier. Furthermore, he goes on to add that he hopelessly witnesses him drowning in a green sea.
The utilization of the words guttering, choking, and drowning are used to make the reader visualize what his death was like. It presents the reader
with an awareness of the brutality of mustard gas. It is painful and inhumane way to die. The third and most graphic stanza tells of how the soldier

The scenes aren't the only thing that is modernised the costumes and props are also modernised. The pool scene which is known as the balcony scene
in the play has been modernised by adding an elevator in which Juliet came down and meet Romeo. this is done so the audiences can relate to the
scene. During the movie there are about 4–5 fight scenes in which all have guns, but in the play it would be fought with swords. The petrol station
fight scenes are modernised by setting it at a petrol station, but in the play it is in the town square At then end of the movie Romeo goes to see Juliet

Are Children Inherently Fascist Essay
Are Kids Inherently Fascist?
In the article "Why kids love 'fascist' cartoons like 'Paw Patrol' and 'Thomas'" author Elissa Strauss argues that children are inherently drawn to
television shows that portray underlying fascist themes that ultimately uphold a mostly white, patriarchal dominant system. Strauss uses two television
shows in particular to argue her case, "Paw Patrol" and "Thomas the Tank Engine" where the former follows search and rescue dogs who go out on
missions to protect their community while the latter is a television series following anthropomorphised locomotives who go on adventures. Overall,
Elissa Strauss' article "Why kids love 'fascist' cartoons like 'Paw Patrol' and 'Thomas'" starts out with a thought–provoking argument using mostly ethos
and pathos, while including some logos, about why parents should be worried their kids are being exposed to fascist themes, but her argument
dwindles after she relies heavily on anecdotal evidence, with little of her own commentary, about the effect these television shows have on society and
their systemic institutions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Strauss, parents look for a "world in which identities are both mutable and equal, and imagination and empathy reign supreme," while
children are "drawn to worlds in which identities are fixed, order trumps imagination and transgressions are met with routine punishment." Here we
can see Strauss using pathos to evoke a battle between good and evil, using positive, idealist descriptions to describe the wants of the parents in
comparison to the cold, mechanical descriptions to describe the wants of the children. This is the point in the article where Strauss introduces her two

mature comedies like Family Guy, everyone has a cartoon of some variation that they can connect with. Of these cartoons there is one particular
show, Gravity Falls, that has stuck out of the norm as it is not only odd, but also dark compared to its counterparts. The show is targeted towards

Analysis of Mise-En-Scene in the Film 'American Beauty' Essay
How does mise–en–scene create meaning and provoke response in the opening of American Beauty?
The opening scene of American Beauty shows a teenage girl lying in a bed, venting her feelings towards her father. In this, the audience sees her in
dull clothing and colours, minimal make–up and has greasy–looking hair. As she sits up, her hair falls around her face and she stares directly into the
camera, giving a sense of unease to the audience.
The next shot is an establishing shot, showing the street where the main character, Leister, lives. Its fall/autumn time and the trees are bare or dying,
possibly indicating and foreshadowing a death later on in the movie. Also the streets are very linear, all vertical and in uniform, as it were.... Show more

the woman clips it from the bush. This rose is called American Beauty which is also the name of the film. She is dressed in a plain grey suit and a

perfectly framing this and has impeccable make up, indicating what the perfect American housewife should resemble. She also converses with the

Leister, again, enclosed in an environment– this time the window. The audience sees him behind the window panes, in between two bright blue

and tranquillity within the home, and also reflects on the colour of the perfect blue sky. Leister seems to fit in as he reflects on his own life and his

What Are The Similarities Between Romeo And Juliet 1968 To...
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is one of the most well–known stories of all time and perhaps the most famous play ever. As one might
expect, the play has been made into a movie many times. The 1968 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli and the 1996 version directed by Baz
Luhrmann are two of the most popular films. The older version attempts to create an authentic representation of the play, while the 1996 version
places a modern twist on the story. At first glance, the movies are completely different, but upon a deeper look, there are several similarities
between the two. This is best demonstrated in the balcony scene. There are several aspects that make the balcony scene from the 1968 movie
different from the 1996 movie. The most visible of these is the setting. The 1968 version takes place on the Capulets' balcony, just like the play. It is
also unique in the costumes and the blocking. The costumes are what people would wear during the time period Shakespeare wrote the play. The
blocking has the two main characters starting out far apart from each other, then coming together before going apart again. The acting also was
different in Zeffirelli's movie. The actors' faces were easy to read, helping the characters to appear as teens in love. They also spoke their lines with a

The scene takes place in a pool, rather than on an actual balcony. Also, instead of the actors coming together from far apart, they are close together

modern, so they did not even look like costumes. Perhaps due to having more experience, the faces of the actors were difficult to read. They also
spoke their lines as if in an everyday conversation, as opposed to being actors in a play. These characteristics are why the 1996 version varies from its

TV MYTHS Essay
TELEVISION AS A MEDIUM FOR MODERN DAY MYTHS
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s television programming developed rapidly into more than an assortment of fact and fiction narratives; it became itself
a social text for an increasing population, "functioning as a kind of code through which people gleaned a large portion of their information, intellectual
stimulation, and distraction" (Danesi, 240). Since its inception in the mid–1930s, many of television's programs have become the history of many
cultures. French semiotician Roland Barthes (1915–1980) claimed that "television shows are often based around a mythologie, in reference to the fact

The television programs of the 1950s and 1960s sugar–coated the typical family and built up the mythology of a patriarchal family. However, this
mythology was challenged by the uprising of strong, independent, working women. For example, the Fresh Prince of Bel–Air (1990) depicted a
clean–cut and wealthy family that was black, with a mother that was a professor at a university. The Cohen family in The O.C. (2003) drama
television series represent a wealthy, white family, with a working mother who is the major 'bread–winner' of the family. These shows and many others
portrayed strong, independent women who were attempting to survive, socially and professionally, in a world that was deconstructing patriarchal
structures (Danesi, 230). Strong–willed women are not the only force that is disassembling these traditions. The dysfunctional family is now also
taking into effect. The show Desperate Housewives (2004) demonstrates the increasing number of families in this period that are separating and losing
the traditional value of 'family'. This show contains cheating spouses, and generally wives who are desperately vying for attention and love. In this day
and age, sitcoms and dramas deal with controversial yet honest groundbreaking discussions of current social issues.

The Pros And Cons Of Cartoons
If a 'worldwide phenomenon' is defined as an occurrence that is reaching throughout the world, then it would be reasonably logical to conclude that the
consumption of animated cartoon shows are indeed, a worldwide phenomenon. Since 1960s, cartoons have provided numerous generations of children
with a type of entertainment that filled their little minds with fantasy and imagination. Cartoons may have started out as an entertainment for children.
However, the world today sees different genres of cartoons produced to target a different group of audience, and cartoons today are not anymore

However, since this group of audiences is at the stage of learning more complex knowledge that may be tedious to infuse into entertainment–based
animated shows, the scriptwriters would rather leave the academic teachings to the schools. Instead, cartoons of this genre are evidently focused on
delivering moral values and encouraging friendships and family–cohesiveness. Plots for these cartoon shows might feature the characters going through
some distressing troubles or difficulties; however, things always turn out right in the end. 'SpongeBob Squarepants', a long–run cartoon series from the
90s featuring SpongeBob the yellow sponge and his starfish best friend Patrick, has been undoubtedly successful in imparting valuable lessons on
friendship and altruism in the minds of teenagers. For example, SpongeBob has always been portrayed as being very giving and selfless to Patrick
who might sometimes seems brainless and naive; Patrick, on the other hand, though usually emotionless, becomes very sad when SpongeBob befalls
some unfortunate fate, and always attempts to help him at his best efforts. Cartoons for the young adults may also adopt a more lenient language style,
permitting the use of trending slangs and everyday phrases such as 'what's up' or 'aww–man' which are otherwise fended off by the scriptwriters of a

Family Guy Influence
There are many cartoons and sitcoms on television for both adults and children. They range from Disney Channel to Fox, but most have one thing in

What kind of message does this send to teens and young adults?

families on a daily basis. The message it sends is that it is ok to be lazy. It is fine to lie and cheat. There is no problem with not having a respectable

What if there were a show created in which the father has a respectable career, he takes care of his family, respects his wife, and helps his children
with any problem that may arise? What if the lead character is smart and honest, kind and level–headed? Would that have an impact on teens and how

style of using more camera movements than the show of "Everybody loves Raymond", that is more static. This dramatically movements of the camera
makes the show seems like in a face–pace running all the time. They do faster close–ups, zooms in/ out, tilting up/ down, and they do faster movements

William Shakespeare's famous 'Romeo and Juliet' was reinvented in 1996 as "Romeo + Juliet" and was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Luhrmann's
interpretation has turned Shakespeare's traditional tale of a tragic love story into a modern and urbanised 20th century version. Luhrmann's adaptation
keeps the classic story of Romeo and Juliet true. This is seen by still having the constant feud between the Montague and Capulet family and the
countless tragedies, yet Luhrmann adds a 20th century twist by using guns instead of swords and replacing horses with cars. The main characters

moral integrity lessons, Married... With Children chose to learn lessons through the immoral actions of the family. It is notable, however, that no
matter all of the problems Al Bundy faced, he always provided for his family the best he could. Which makes the show even more enjoyable to
audiences around the

Jungle Stereotypes In Little Black Sambo, Betty Boop,
Surprisingly, I personally thought the idea of observing these cartoons with a third eye was highly effective. Usually, people tend to look past exactly
what the cartoons are portraying. I noticed throughout all of the cartoons they were humanizing racism. I saw a diversity in cultures from all of the
cartoons. Frequently, I observed how all the cultures were represented and the way they were dressed. Additionally, one thing that stood out from the
rest was physical appearance. Between the two cartoons Little Black Sambo, Betty Boop, All this & Rabbit Stew, and Jungle Jitters the African
Americans all had the same physical features such as facial appearance. The setting of Little Black Sambo and Jungle Jitters were very similar plus
they both had that jungle stereotype. Jungle Jitters initially illustrated how African Americans are jungle eating people. Social justice was highly
embellished in Jungle Jitters explaining the lifestyle of all social classes. Overall, I noticed the variety of relationships all the cartoons were depicting
from what the class learned during the start of the year.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lazy Town highlights the different lifestyles of females and males. Ali Baba & The 40 Thieves was technically making fun of the Arabs culture.
Especially, insulting their language, and presenting to the public how easy it was for Popeye to defeat the Arabs. This cartoon exhibited a various
amount of similarities and differences between the Arabs and Americans. Likewise, when Popeye ate the spinach an army tank appeared on his bicep
and earlier the thieves had swords unlike their opponent. The development in weapons and technology has a significant change globally. Was the
message to implant that all Arabs are evil and Americans are good? We can't just assume that every culture is evil based on certain events from the

Common Stereotypes In Modern Family

  • 1. Common Stereotypes In Modern Family "Modern Family," a television show created and written by ABC Network is one of the funniest, most relatable and cleaver shows that has ever hit our television screens. "Modern Family" centers on the lives of three families living in modern day Los Angles, California. Jay – aged husband and Gloria Pritchett – sexy Latino wife are the modern day California couple. Gloria has a son named Manny from her previous marriage. Jay's son, Mitchell, is a very feminine man married to an even more feminine man, Cameron. They are the modern day gay couple who adopt a Vietnamese girl– Lily. Jay's daughter, Claire, is a married woman to Phil – the self–proclaimed "cool dad." Together they have three children, Hailey – stereotypical dumb teenager, Alex – nerdy pre–teen, and a son named Luke who sometimes gets left out of the crazy busy schedule that surrounds them. All ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jay and Gloria are at a soccer game and Gloria instantly gets hit on by a man her age, while Jay steps into the conversation and gets mistaken for her father. Right away I noticed a common stereotype that people perceive – older man who is married to younger woman is seen as a cradle robber. Speaking from experience, my mother is 20 years younger than my father and they are always viewed as non–equals. Then the shot gets cut to Phil and Claire trying to juggle ten things at once while dealing with their three children – the stereotype that we observed is how families like that are always hectic and how the dad of a teenager tries to be cool. Lastly we get to see Mitchell and Cam in an airplane on the way home with their newly adopted daughter. An old lady says, "She's an angel. You and you're wife must be thrilled!" The stereotype has come and gone that only opposite sex couples adopt/have children. "Modern Family" has it all; gays, straights, whites, Latinos, old, young, but mostly they are all beautiful in their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Dystopia Of Anne Washburn 's Play, Mr. Burns : A Post... The kinds of popular culture that survive in the dystopia of Anne Washburn's play, Mr. Burns: A Post –Electric play addresses our own engagement with popular culture in many ways. The purposes of popular culture sometimes change or remain the same. Popular culture is with us throughout our lives in times of triumph and anxiety. Washburn's play focuses on a group of people who recall an episode ofThe Simpsons during a time of crisis. They compare lines and characters in order to better understand the environment around them and they talk about it to entertain themselves. Recalling an old episode was an activity for the characters to spend time during a period of nuclear disaster. This type of entertainment gives the audience interest, relief, and excitement in a dull boring life. Their form of engagement with popular culture is similar to ours through interaction and point of view. The first Act of Mr. Burns: A Post –Electric Play is set during a time of a dystopian society because of a nuclear disaster in the country. People did not have a form of entertainment because they had no electricity, television, and digital entertainment. They had to rethink the way that they entertained themselves. Therefore, in the first act, a group of people sits around a campfire to talk about The Simpsons: Cape Feare episode. This scene addresses our own engagement with popular culture through interaction. • 3. Satire In Family Guy What is a stereotype? The Free Dictionary defines a stereotype as "a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group" (Stereotype). Although many people may not realize it, stereotypes influence how they interact with others each day. People judge others because of their race, ethnicity, religion, and heritage before they even know the person. These judgements come from stereotypes they encounter in their lives. There are plenty of news stories, movies, and television shows that portray these stereotypes. However, Seth McFarland's television show "Family Guy" uses satire to highlight stereotypes in today's society. The show's use of ethnic humor includes a lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because there are a lot of jokes and news stories that target Muslims like this, many Muslim and Arabic people are subjected to this treatment. If there were none of these jokes on the air or if news anchors told more positive stories about Muslims and Arabs, this cultural group would have an easier time in society (TEDxYouth). Overall, "Family Guy" and other media outlets portray Muslims and Arabs as terrorists, and it makes people afraid of them because of the stereotype. In addition, another stereotype "Family Guy" likes to make fun of is people of Asian heritage. Seth McFarland has written a lot of episodes in which he uses many Asian stereotypes. For instance, in one episode, he has Peter take an Asian student to the SAT to use as his calculator on the test, as he tells the student to "do math" (Family Guy Season 5 Episode 3). Although this might seem like a positive stereotype for Asians, this can also negatively impact them. There has been studies that have shown that Asian people feel offended by this stereotype. Dr. Art Markman did a study in which he had an Asian and a white participant in a room. It is important to note that in the study, the white person "was actually one of the experimenters posing as a participant" (Markman). In the study, each participant was asked to fill out one of two packets. Each packet had different problems in it, where "One packet had math problems in it, while the ... This film is part of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy where Luhrmann uses a theatre motif in each, with poetry and language being the motif used in Romeo and Juliet. This play was originally written by William Shakespeare who was an English poet, playwright, actor and a man who is considered one of the greatest contributors to English literature as he invented over 1700 now common words and wrote some of the world's most famous plays. For the Montague family, Luhrmann has put the characters in unbuttoned, bright coloured Hawaiian shirts and given the males short blonde hair to link to these characters beachside lifestyles. Lisa frequently used this gazebo throughout the years; however, she was not aware that the gazebo she built was on property belonging to Danny. After a month, Lisa constructed a fence between her and Danny's yard, inclosing the gazebo on Lisa's side of the fence with no complaints from Danny. Fifteen years later, Danny had a survey done on his property, and discovers that Lisa had actually built the gazebo on his land without his consent, and brings a lawsuit to evict Lisa from the land. What this entails is that the actual sole physical occupation of the land with the intent to keep it solely for the person occupying the property must be establish. Lisa demonstrated this by construction a fence between her house and Danny's. In fact, by doing this, she establish sole possession of the property in question. Once more, by fencing in the property, and the fact that Danny knew what she was doing because he lived next door and did not contest, showed Lisa was being open, visible, and notorious with her actions. She also was continuous and peaceable with her actions because during the fifteen years of usage, there were no issues with Danny, and he never complained that her actions were wrong. Only after fifteen years and a survey, did the ownership questions come up. Lastly, Lisa believed that the property was hers and never asked or obtained permission before erecting the fence. Since all the elements coexist, Lisa has a legal right to claim adverse possession to the property. Furthermore, the state has a statutory period for adverse possession of ten years. What this means is that Lisa must have occupied the property for the full statutory period, and this action must have coexisted with the other elements of adverse possession before the statute of limitations runs out. • 7. Comparing Two Different Versions Of Romeo And Juliet Im Shakespeare tragedy , Romeo and Juliet have fallen for each other. They are faced with many challenges throughout their love which eventually lead to their death. TheyВґre two different versions of this play;one is by Baz Luhrmann which is more modern and has really nothing to do with the play then there is the one by Franco Zeffirelli which has more things in common with the actual play. In Act V Scene iii ВЁThe Death SceneВЁ both directors have different ways of showing how the ВЁtwo star–crossed loversВЁ die. There were many differences between the Zeffirelli and Luhrmann film. The part that stood out to me the most was how Juliet takes her life away when she sees that Romeo is dead. In the Zeffirelli version Juliet grabs RomeoЕ› dagger and stabs herself because she sees Romeo had killed himself with poison. However,in the Luhrmann version Juliet sees Romeo before he dies and actually gets to talk to him and Juliet sees him die.Juliet can not take the pain of seeing her Romeo die so she decides to take her own life to but instead of using a dagger she uses a gun. ... Comparing Zefferelli's Film Zefferelli vs. Baz Luhrmann – Shirin Shahsavari – 3/10/16 Although Zefferelli's film is a better book–to–movie adaptation of Shakespeare's famous play, "Romeo and Juliet", Baz Luhrmann's version is a lot more entertaining and comprehensible to most teenagers because of its modern setting. Perhaps, one of the most substantial visible contrasts between the two films is the setting. Zeffirelli's film takes place in a classical setting, accurately representing the actual historic period in which the play was written in. However, in Luhrmann's version the setting has been completely transformed to make the film more modern and therefore easier for the audience to understand and relate to. • 9. Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play With the title alone, it is easy to assume that Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play would not be a typical play. Unlike other performances, Mr. Burns is not a simple narrative. Quite literally, it is a play within a play. The narrative lacks structure due to how it stands as a social commentary on the importance of entertainment to society. Mr. Burns began after what seems to be a traumatic event that has affected everyone's way of life. From what we see as our survivors huddled around a campfire in the woods. They recount a normalcy of how life used to be, an episode of The Simpsons. Throughout the recounts on what happened in the episode "Cape Feare", the play introduces a new character which gives exposition to the current landscape of the United States. Having to deal with all this affects Maddie and there are points in the play where she snaps at Jhana for the stuff she does. We see Maddie has gotten used to all the stuff Jhana does that when King returns home and says "Jhana's real weird, eh" she responds by saying "what else is new" (Macleod 41) showing how she has gotten used to Jhana's antics, yet still gets agitated by what Jhana does. Bill falls in love with Maddie and acts as a father figure to Jhana while her father is touring in North America. Maddie is still in love with King but every time he leaves it affects Maddie in a very negative way. King chooses his job over his family thus forcing Maddie into a state of sadness and this is evident when she says "Hold on to my perfect little girl. (holding Jhana) You were so warm. To hell with that bed of mine that had suddenly become so big and icy. I've got Jhana." (Macleod 58). Media Analysis of Gender Essay First of all, in The Simpsons, the scene where we get into the actual plot of the story opens with Marge and Lisa walking into a department store that sells dolls. The gender stereotype that girls are only interested in playing with dolls is reinforced here as a huge selection of Malibu Stacy dolls is on display with a throng of screeching, bloodthirsty girls tearing the store apart. Lisa says, "I'm warning you mom, I might get a little crazy." and immediately knocks down a girl and snatches another in a choke–hold to be the first in line for the new Malibu Stacy doll. Lisa goes on a rant about how "millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act! That they cannot be anything more than vacuous ninnies...!"and gets really mad when Bart does not understand why she is so upset. The difference in communication styles is shown here as Lisa is more adept with words than Bart is as Bart can only give Lisa a stupid reply like "that's what I was going to say." This illustrates the stereotype that girls are more expressive and sensitive than boys are. On the other hand, Marge plays the more traditional housewife as her mind never delves into issues that are not relevant to the domestic center; she is not privy to relevant discussions on social issues like Lisa and cannot understand why Lisa is so upset. She said that Lisa had been speaking up "an awful lot lately." This suggests that typical lady–like behavior does not include speaking out and that the mother should enforce positive female behavior. • 28. Analysis of Mise-En-Scene in the Film 'American Beauty' Essay How does mise–en–scene create meaning and provoke response in the opening of American Beauty? The opening scene of American Beauty shows a teenage girl lying in a bed, venting her feelings towards her father. In this, the audience sees her in dull clothing and colours, minimal make–up and has greasy–looking hair. As she sits up, her hair falls around her face and she stares directly into the camera, giving a sense of unease to the audience. The next shot is an establishing shot, showing the street where the main character, Leister, lives. Its fall/autumn time and the trees are bare or dying, possibly indicating and foreshadowing a death later on in the movie. Also the streets are very linear, all vertical and in uniform, as it were.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The camera goes to a close up on the rose as the woman clips it from the bush. This rose is called American Beauty which is also the name of the film. She is dressed in a plain grey suit and a clean white apron, again fitting in with the colour scheme of the interior decor. She also wears pearl earrings and a pearl necklace with her hair perfectly framing this and has impeccable make up, indicating what the perfect American housewife should resemble. She also converses with the homosexual neighbours about the secret to her roses flourishing so well; she seems happy and overly enthusiastic. The audience then see a shot of Leister, again, enclosed in an environment– this time the window. The audience sees him behind the window panes, in between two bright blue shutters, indicating his isolation and loneliness within his own home. The colour blue is also an interesting choice by the director. Blue suggests calm and tranquillity within the home, and also reflects on the colour of the perfect blue sky. Leister seems to fit in as he reflects on his own life and his past happiness, and also seems unsettled within himself, contrasting to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. What Are The Similarities Between Romeo And Juliet 1968 To... Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is one of the most well–known stories of all time and perhaps the most famous play ever. As one might expect, the play has been made into a movie many times. The 1968 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli and the 1996 version directed by Baz Luhrmann are two of the most popular films. The older version attempts to create an authentic representation of the play, while the 1996 version places a modern twist on the story. At first glance, the movies are completely different, but upon a deeper look, there are several similarities between the two. This is best demonstrated in the balcony scene. There are several aspects that make the balcony scene from the 1968 movie different from the 1996 movie. The most visible of these is the setting. The 1968 version takes place on the Capulets' balcony, just like the play. It is also unique in the costumes and the blocking. The costumes are what people would wear during the time period Shakespeare wrote the play. The blocking has the two main characters starting out far apart from each other, then coming together before going apart again. The acting also was different in Zeffirelli's movie. The actors' faces were easy to read, helping the characters to appear as teens in love. They also spoke their lines with a rhythm, as if... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scene takes place in a pool, rather than on an actual balcony. Also, instead of the actors coming together from far apart, they are close together the whole time in Luhrmann's rendition, making the scene seem somewhat unrealistic. The costumes Juliet and Romeo were wearing were more modern, so they did not even look like costumes. Perhaps due to having more experience, the faces of the actors were difficult to read. They also spoke their lines as if in an everyday conversation, as opposed to being actors in a play. These characteristics are why the 1996 version varies from its 1968 ... • 30. TV MYTHS Essay TELEVISION AS A MEDIUM FOR MODERN DAY MYTHS Throughout the 1950s and 1960s television programming developed rapidly into more than an assortment of fact and fiction narratives; it became itself a social text for an increasing population, "functioning as a kind of code through which people gleaned a large portion of their information, intellectual stimulation, and distraction" (Danesi, 240). Since its inception in the mid–1930s, many of television's programs have become the history of many cultures. French semiotician Roland Barthes (1915–1980) claimed that "television shows are often based around a mythologie, in reference to the fact that the original mythic themes continue to reverberate residually in modern–day societies, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The television programs of the 1950s and 1960s sugar–coated the typical family and built up the mythology of a patriarchal family. However, this mythology was challenged by the uprising of strong, independent, working women. For example, the Fresh Prince of Bel–Air (1990) depicted a clean–cut and wealthy family that was black, with a mother that was a professor at a university. The Cohen family in The O.C. (2003) drama television series represent a wealthy, white family, with a working mother who is the major 'bread–winner' of the family. These shows and many others portrayed strong, independent women who were attempting to survive, socially and professionally, in a world that was deconstructing patriarchal structures (Danesi, 230). Strong–willed women are not the only force that is disassembling these traditions. The dysfunctional family is now also taking into effect. The show Desperate Housewives (2004) demonstrates the increasing number of families in this period that are separating and losing the traditional value of 'family'. This show contains cheating spouses, and generally wives who are desperately vying for attention and love. In this day and age, sitcoms and dramas deal with controversial yet honest groundbreaking discussions of current social issues. • 31. The Pros And Cons Of Cartoons If a 'worldwide phenomenon' is defined as an occurrence that is reaching throughout the world, then it would be reasonably logical to conclude that the consumption of animated cartoon shows are indeed, a worldwide phenomenon. Since 1960s, cartoons have provided numerous generations of children with a type of entertainment that filled their little minds with fantasy and imagination. Cartoons may have started out as an entertainment for children. However, the world today sees different genres of cartoons produced to target a different group of audience, and cartoons today are not anymore exclusive to children. However, since this group of audiences is at the stage of learning more complex knowledge that may be tedious to infuse into entertainment–based animated shows, the scriptwriters would rather leave the academic teachings to the schools. Instead, cartoons of this genre are evidently focused on delivering moral values and encouraging friendships and family–cohesiveness. Plots for these cartoon shows might feature the characters going through some distressing troubles or difficulties; however, things always turn out right in the end. 'SpongeBob Squarepants', a long–run cartoon series from the 90s featuring SpongeBob the yellow sponge and his starfish best friend Patrick, has been undoubtedly successful in imparting valuable lessons on friendship and altruism in the minds of teenagers. For example, SpongeBob has always been portrayed as being very giving and selfless to Patrick who might sometimes seems brainless and naive; Patrick, on the other hand, though usually emotionless, becomes very sad when SpongeBob befalls some unfortunate fate, and always attempts to help him at his best efforts. Cartoons for the young adults may also adopt a more lenient language style, permitting the use of trending slangs and everyday phrases such as 'what's up' or 'aww–man' which are otherwise fended off by the scriptwriters of a children's ... They range from Disney Channel to Fox, but most have one thing in common: the father figure is a bumbling fool. While enjoyable, many of these shows are damaging to our society and it makes one wonder if there is a connection between kids and teenagers who watch these shows and not respecting men or the father figures in their life. In Family Guy, the idiot is Peter Griffin, inThe Simpsons it is Homer Simpson, and in American Dad it is Stan Smith. Even children's shows such as Good Luck Charlie participate in the new standard. What if there were a show created in which the father has a respectable career, he takes care of his family, respects his wife, and helps his children with any problem that may arise? Luhrmann's interpretation has turned Shakespeare's traditional tale of a tragic love story into a modern and urbanised 20th century version. Luhrmann's adaptation keeps the classic story of Romeo and Juliet true. This is seen by still having the constant feud between the Montague and Capulet family and the countless tragedies, yet Luhrmann adds a 20th century twist by using guns instead of swords and replacing horses with cars.
