Common Components of a Computer System
1.
2. CPU
CPU stands for ‘Central Processing Unit’ its main function is
to ‘process’ the computer and allow it to carry out the
task chosen by its user. It is stuck on top the heat sink
with thermal compound so that it does not over heat
whilst functioning.
3. POWER SUPPLY
The Power Supply is the main source in a computer as it
powers the computer allowing it to work. It is a step-down
transformer and has AC power to DC power.
4. FANS
A fan is used to cool down the computer while it is being
used, if the computer did not have fan, the computer
would more than likely explode and over heat, the fan is
glued down with a special thermal compound which
doesn’t melt at a very high heat.
5. RAMS
RAM stands for ‘Random Access Memory’, if a computer
didn’t have RAM it would be unable to carry out tasks that
the user want it to do. While the computer is on, data
being used whilst the computer is powered is stored into
the RAM. After the computer is powered down all data
that was stored in the RAM is sent straight to the Hard
Drive to be stored permanently.
6. HARD DRIVE (OTHER STORAGE DEVICES)
Hard Drive is the section of the computer which allows you
to save documents you have created on to a computer.
You are also capable of being able to move documents
off of it and from there be able to open or print it of your
machine. Other sources of storage includes; Floppy
Discs, CDs, USB Sticks and Portable Hard Drives
7. VIDEO CARD
A Video Card displays the image which is created in the
base unit and i then screened onto the monitor. Some
video cards are more advanced then others and are able
to process more high quality images onto the monitor.
8. NIC
A NIC is an area which plugs into the back of the computer
allowing and Ethernet cable to be plugged into it allowing
the user to access the internet, there is also a Wireless
NIC which lets you access the internet using Wi-Fi.
9. MOTHERBOARD
The Motherboard is the main part of the computer, not only
does it hold everything together, it allows it to work, it has
an easy way of letting the user know that something isn't
working properly in the computer.
