Galileo's Life and Achievements
1. Justification
Introduction
Galileo Galilei was born in 15 February 1564 and died in 8 January 1642. He was a man of many great achievements and also many things such as a physicist and much more. Some say Galileo more than any other person was responsible for the birth of modern science.
Life
What was life like when Galileo was a child and when he was moving on to bigger things?
Galileo was raised and born in Pisa, Italy. He was the first of six children and the son of Vincenzo Galilei. Vincenzo was a famous lutenist. At the age of eight his family moved to Florence he was then left with Jacopo Borghini. He was then taught at the Camaldolese Monastery at Vallombrosa. Later on Galileo then enrolled for a medical degree after his father urged him although very unlikely of him he failed to do so. So instead he took on mathematics in 1589 he was promoted as the chair of mathematics in Pisa. But not long after that sadly his father pasted away and left Galileo to take care of his younger brother Michelagnolo. But Galileo had to move on in 1592 he went to the University of Padua teaching all sorts of things. Later on Galileo returned to Rome but was mysteriously summoned to the Holy Office in Rome of being suspected of heresy. Galileo was put under arrest and his movements restricted by the Pope. In 1638 Galileo went totally blind and was suffering from a painful hernia and insomnia (types of terrible diseases). He got visitors who wished him to get better but it just got worse Galileo received a fever and heart problems sadly just like his father he died.
Achievements
What exactly are Galileo’s achievements?
Galileo’s crazy ideas lead him straight to court and jail. Galileo had a real capability of math’s and science and had hoped to get a decent living and that’s what he got. Galileo also disagreed about Aristotle’s theory of that the speed at which an object falls is depending on its weight. Instead Galileo thought that the rate of speed of a falling object had more to do with its speed. To prove his theory he hushed his students to the top of the leaning tower of Pisa from where he made his famous demonstration where he proved Aristotle wrong. Galileo also had a soft spot for mechanical engineering and applied his skills to a wide range of useful objects for the study of science. Probably one of Galileo’s top inventions was the telescope which most people know what it is. In Galileo’s time the popular thermascope which was an inaccurate device for measuring heat/humidity Galileo modified it a bit to reflect accurate measurements of temperature. Galileo also built a Hydrostatic balance which jewelers found very useful for precious metals. Galileo also struck upon the idea for using the swing of a pendulum for clocks which resolved the idea of pendulum clocks. Galileo’s telescope proved most useful Galileo turned the telescope towards space in Galileo’s time they called space the heavens and studied the plants which circled around earth.
Other things
What else did Galileo do other than his studies?
As we know Vencenzo had a musical ability and his love for music Galileo seemed to have inherited his father’s love for music he also played the lute all his life. Music not only played a special part but also lead Galileo to his new physics. Galileo was an outstanding lutenist himself who’s charm and style even surpassed his father’s skills. To Galileo playing the lute was a source of comfort and happiness in his near years of dying when his blindness was added to his wonderful life.
Total words: 642 (including bibliography)
Total words: 620 (not including bibliography)
Bibliography
Websites:
www.galileo1610.com
http://365daysofastronomy.org/2009/06/22/june-22nd-galileo-and-his-lute/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei
http://www.essortment.com/all/galileogalilei_rngy.htm
Books:
Pioneers of Science: Galileo
Galileo the genius who faced inquisition
By Tianrui G Room10
