Medium-close up – takes up a page and applies
facial expression and body expression.
Low angle shot – priority and status in the
rock/music industry
High angle shot – Promotion and importance of
vocalist to a wide area/audience.
Eye level shot – applies facial expression and
motion of the vocalist/band.
Weekly – My magazine will be
released weekly following the trends
of Kerrang! This is because it allows
the target audience to get up to date
with all the bands every week in a
small issue.
Monthly – My magazine could be
released monthly because it can be
a special issue giving all the info
about the bands every month in a
big issue.
For my target audience I
can apply the same
audience to my
magazine, from the
readership of Kerrang!
This allows me to create
a magazine which best
suits the target audience
based on the Kerrang!
readership by adding
pictures and info related
to the bands similar to
Kerrang!.

Mood Board - Genre
• The reason why I have chosen the specific images on the genre mood board is because each
individual image relates in some way to the typical readership of Kerrang! For example Vans
is a top brand which most of the Kerrang! Target readership have therefore will be a typical
aim to advertise in my magazine. Another image is Monster energy, this is because this drink
is in supermarkets and small corner shops therefore any reader of the readership is able to
afford the drink and because it has caffeine and gives you a boost of energy allows the reader
to become addicted to the drink and get ready for concerts or parties.
• Overall in conclusion the images are specific to the target readership as most of the images
are advertised within the Kerrang! Magazine so therefore allows the opportunity for the
readership to buy the magazine and see or buy the products which are held inside.

Mood board - Magazine
Font styles and Masthead name ideas
Main headline
• The main headline I have chosen to have Black Veil Brides in the Shut’em down font from
www.dafont.com. This is because Black Veil Brides are a top rock band which are featured in
most issues of Kerrang! Therefore to have them featured as the main story in Revolution! Will
prove to Kerrang! And NME that my magazine will be a top competitor trying to cover the
bands first.
• The Shut’em down font is a very expressive font which conveys the true meaning of rock as
well as proving what culture the band is and what type of music they do.by having cracks and
holes in the font conveys that rock can shatter things from the use of guitars, drums and
vocals.
• The colours which I choose to use would be mainly red for the text, however I will be adding
a yellow drop shadow to the text which will make it contrast to the background and stand out
to the readers eye what they main article in the magazine is going to be about as well as
forcing the readers to buy the magazine as it has caught their eye from the colours and the
font style.
Genre
• I am going to produce a magazine similar to the genre of my magazine of inspiration
which is Kerrang!. The genre of Kerrang! is Rock so I am going to try and make a
magazine which best tries to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) some of the codes and
conventions of the Kerrang! Magazine such as the front cover, short quote form the
DPS, Standfirst but adapt the colours and also the background of the DPS. I have
chosen rock as my genre because Kerrang! Contains images in the likes of top rock
bands such as ‘Black Veil Brides’, ‘Green Day’ and ‘Bring me the Horizon’, which I
listen to in my free time so in my opinion these 3 rock bands are widely known
through the UK and by producing another rock magazine will increase the audience
further and get people to like both Kerrang! and my magazine. Kerrang! however is
available weekly rather than monthly due the content within the magazine which is
short, sweet and straight to the point so it allows me to easily explore the codes and
conventions inside Kerrang! and ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) and/or adapt some of
them to contain in my magazine from Kerrang!. I will also choose to adapt some
conventions to make my magazine look more of a rock magazine by using
conventions such as a microphone or big speakers, or by simply changing some of
the colours on the front cover or DPS. To present a USP to the target readership I
will be making some ‘differences’ (Steve Neale-1980). I will be changing the font
styles of each of the pages of the front cover and double page spread so that my
magazine will look more like a typical rock magazine. Secondly I would change the
layout of the double page spread as the article is only on one page of the DPS, so by
changing this so it spreads over both pages allows the reader to view the main
headline, read some of the article and also see the images which are provided on
the DPS to get a feel for the artist in the article/interview and their emotions.
The non-verbal code of the main image conveys that the content inside
the magazine will be right in your face and give you a straight emotion
depending on the type of images and the type of language which has
been used. I would adapt the main image by having the same size but
changing the main image instead of having hands on the collar I would
stand their with my hands around a microphone and screaming in to it. I
will choose to adapt this image to screaming into a microphone because
it contains the same principle and is conveying the fact what is in the
magazine on the double-page spread (DPS).
The verbal codes in the bottom half of the magazine convey what the main
story in the magazine is going to be about. It is bright, bold , contrasting
colours which looks visually appealing because it contrasts to a the dark
background and main image. It automatically draws your eyes to the main
image and the main headline. I choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this
idea as it is expressive and catchy, so by adapting this slightly I can have a
slightly brighter shade of yellow and a red drop shadow. This is because it will
look more visually appealing and also appeals straight to the readers eye.
The verbal code in the circular sticker in the middle of the page on the right
hand side conveys a little extra to the magazine front cover by explaining
what else is in the magazine other that the main story. In this case it is
‘Exclusive interviews’ which therefore gives the reader a more likely opinion
to go and buy the magazine just by looking at the front cover. I will ‘repeat’
(Steve Neale-1980) this idea by using the same colours, however I will adapt
the shape slightly so it will be more appealing and change the verbal codes
within the circle so it relates and is relevant to my magazine.
The non-verbal code of the background conveys
darkness and isolation. This is because the darkness
relates to the verbal code “Things are darker this time
around…” which is a small quote out of the DPS. I
choose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea of the
background colour scheme and verbal code from the
article because it conveys the front cover with the
background and conveys what type of info is on the
double page spread.
‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980)
The non-verbal code of the main image on the double page
spread conveys that the content in the article will be about what
the image is conveying to give you a straight emotion depending
on how you look at the image and the type of language which has
been used. I would adapt the main image on the DPS by having
the same size but adapting the main image instead of having a
casual hand on the side I would stand their with my arms folded
with one foot on the wall looking casual and straight to the point.
I will choose to adapt the main image to leaning on a wall
because it contains the same principle but develops the
information in the article a bit further.
The verbal codes on the left hand page and one on the right
hand page at the bottom as an abbreviated quote of the
magazine DPS convey what the article is going to contain.
The main headline is bold, funky and a large size with using
contrasting colours which looks visually appealing because
it contrasts to a the dark background and main image. It
automatically draws your eyes to the article and the main
image. The standfirst is a bold font which is white, therefore
does a similar thing to the main headline but contains some
highlighted key words in a bright colour to introduce who
the band are and who will be interviewed or speaking in
the article. So to adapt this slightly I can have a slightly
bolder main headline to introduce what type of information
will be contained in the article. This is because it will look
more visually appealing and also appeals straight to the
readers eye. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the standfirst
by using different colours to highlight key words so it looks
bold and eye catching.
The non-verbal code of the background conveys rural, casual and a
calm surrounding. This is because the article might have been
stated with the vocalist in a similar type of surrounding. I choose to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea of the background because it
conveys simplicity and calmness to the reader of the magazine.
The verbal code of the page number and brand identity at the bottom of the
pages on the far bottom left and far bottom right of the page convey the fact
that the main article will be close to the front or in the middle of the
magazine, and by having the brand identity on each page next to the page
number allows the reader to see the logo on every page and are forced to
search it. I will adapt this idea by changing the page numbers and the brand
identity.
‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980)
Strapline
• The past, present and future of music (NME)
• The connotations of this strapline is that by stating the words past, present and future automatically injects the idea to the
reader that within the issues f the magazine their will be different music tastes from bands who were popular in the past
such as the Rolling stones, the Beatles, in the present they state artists in the likes of Ariana Grande, Rita Ora, Eminem and
Taylor swift. However for the future it connotes that the magazine will state small story's about upcoming artists who NME
think will make the charts and be good music artists for different music tastes.
• The overall general readership of NME magazine from its strapline will be aimed at both genders of a range of ages, as NME
has content in their which was in the past sometime ago with artists which the older generation will know. However in the
present teens will look at that section because it is the time which most of the known artists are playing and doing tours
which are of our generation, but in the future part it aims to reach the teenagers again and some of the older generation
because it has content which explains the up coming artists who could hit the top of the charts.
• My strapline is going to contain similar language in the form of The past, present and future of music from NME magazine
because it states about what music has been most listened to in the past, present and what is going to be top hits in the
future. So an idea of a strapline which will best suit my magazine would be the same type of language as the one from NME
but in the form of Obey the past, present and future of rock!.

Layout
The front cover of Kerrang! Is similar to that of NME because as
they both are similar types of magazines they will often convey
similar conventions such as a medium close up. I think a medium
close up is one of the best shot types you can have on a magazine
front cover because the majority of the music front covers all
have one. It appeals most because it enables the reader to focus
on the facial expression of the vocalist on the front cover to give
you a straight forward idea to what type of magazine genre it is
going to be.
The main story on the front cover is always in a bright
contrasting colour to the background or the main
image. This is an appealing idea for a magazine
because it focuses your eyes straight on the main story
and what the story is going to be about. The
contrasting colours for the style are a very strong
convention which is very appealing because it makes
the main story stand out from the main image and the
main image stand out from the background.
The quote from the main article/interview in the
magazine will be similar between both Kerrang! And
NME because as they are similar magazines they still
convey most of the same conventions and by having a
quote gives a sharp, snappy idea of what is mentioned in
the main article. This is a convention because it allows
the reader to pick up the magazine and see what type of
content is contained in the issue and see whether or not
they want to buy the magazine.
The DPS of Kerrang! Is similar to that of NME because as they
both are similar types of magazines they will often convey similar
conventions such as a medium shots and abbreviated quotes. I
think medium shots are one of the best shot types you can have
on a magazine DPS because the majority of the main DPS all have
one. It appeals most because it enables the reader to focus on
the facial expression of the vocalist on the Info on the page to
give you a straight forward idea to what type of information the
article will contain based on the facial expression.
The abbreviated quote from the main article/interview in
the magazine will be similar between both Kerrang! And
NME because as they are similar magazines they still
convey most of the same conventions and by having a
quote as either a main headline or on the side to give a
sharp, snappy idea of what is mentioned in the main
article. This is a convention because it allows the reader
to automatically get into the article and see what type of
content is contained in the issue and see whether or not
they want to keep reading the article or ignore it from
the abbreviated quote.
The main story in the DPS is always a contrast colour to the
background or the main image. This is an appealing idea for a
magazine DPS because it focuses your eyes straight on the main
headline and the standfirst of the article. The contrasting colours for
the style are a very strong convention which is very appealing because
it makes the main article stand out from the main image and the main
image stand out from the background.
House Style
The colour scheme which I am going to use for the
front cover of my magazine will be a Black/grey
background with a Bold, red headline will a yellow
drop shadow in the foreground, however across each
of the pages such as the DPS I will use the colours
Black as a background for half the page, turquoise
highlighted text in certain areas and white text on
top of the black background to create contrasts. I
choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the same
colour scheme as from my magazine of inspiration
which is Kerrang!. I am going to achieve the same
colour scheme through the magazine by using a tool
called the ‘eye dropper’ in Adobe Photoshop. This is
because the eye dropper can get the exact colour
from an image and apply the same colour to a design
or product which has been created on Photoshop.

Spending power
• The spending power of the audience for my magazine will need to be relevant because the
target audience will be wanting to buy products from the magazine as well as buying the
magazine itself so my magazine will need to have a relevant buying price. Overall from
looking at the demographics of the readership for a typical rock magazine such as Kerrang!
And NME the spending power of the target audience will be fairly high but not to expensive
as 46% are from the ABC1 categories therefore need to advertise products which are a fair
price but not to expensive so the readership can be able to buy the magazine.
• However the readership will want to buy the magazine because within it there will be adverts
which are related to bands such as jumpers, t-shirts and CD’s, therefore the audience will
want to buy the magazine so they can see what's on offer from the adverts and be able to
afford their favourite band merchandise from the magazine.
Advertising in Kerrang!
Kerrang! Had teamed up with Paco Rabanne to
promote their new product Black XS. This type of
product was advertised through the Kerrang!
Magazine as the target audience like to wear
black, therefore by promoting a new product
which was black allowed Paco Rabanne to get a
good audience through the widely spread rock
magazine of Kerrang!.
Kerrang! Had advertised energy drinks in their
magazine such as Relentless. Energy drinks were
advertised through the magazine because the
typical readers like to drink energy drinks.
Therefore by advertising these drinks to the
readership they will then feel the need to go and
buy one as they are being advertised in the
magazine.
Download festival has been advertised in Kerrang! Many
times, this is because it is probably rocks greatest festival
going, therefore by advertising Download and the set list
for who is going to be playing at the festival urges the
readers to go to this festival and enjoy there type of
music.
Survey Monkey Research
From this research I found out that the majority of
the readership for this survey is male so my magazine
should be based around the male gender by including
band pictures and interviews on top bands/vocalists
as they are mostly male themselves as its rare to find
a female vocalist for rock bands.
From this research I found out
that the majority of the
readership for this survey are
between the ages of 16-20 so
my magazine should contain
content which will best suit
16-20 year olds. Such as deep
information and engaging
pictures to appeal to the target
age group.
From this research I found out
that the majority of the people
who did this survey voted
Revolution as my main
masthead so therefore I am
going to go with Revolution as
it has the highest percentage
and appeals the most to the
people who did the survey.
From this research I found out that the majority of the readership of a
rock magazine will be willing to pay £2.10+ so for my magazine I need
to consider the fact of the amount and depth of which the content is
within the magazine and include pictures, posters and free hand-outs
which will be worth the full price.
From this research I found out that the majority of the
readership for a rock magazine chose to release the magazine
monthly as apposed to weekly and fortnightly. So I have
considered to release my magazine monthly as apposed to
these results as it appeals more to a higher percentage of
people. Which having releasing the magazine monthly
connotes the fact that more detail can be included and you can
buy 1 hardcopy per month instead of buying one for a week
and missing an issue because the next one is out.
From this question I found out that the majority of the readership
for a rock magazine would prefer the magazine to be marketed
online other then superstores, TV adverts and other magazines
which connotes the fact more people are using the internet in
our days so therefore more people will see it on social media and
go onto the homepage. So I could make a website based around
my magazine so that people can subscribe and buy the magazine
online.
From this question in the survey I
found out that the majority of people
would like to see interviews and tour
dates within the magazine and also
some forms of stories about the bands
and advertisements so that the
consumer will keep buying the
magazine or maybe even a
subscription to get the latest magazine.
Finally from this research I found out
that the majority of the people who
answered the survey would
recommend a rock magazine to
others because its deep in content
and also other people might
recommend you a magazine and you
recommend one back.

From this research I found out that 90% of the people who

a rock magazine because as well as getting posters and
content in the actual hardback magazine, you can get free
stickers or competition slips etc.
The majority of the readership of the magazine from my questionnaire would
like to see competitions and interviews so for my magazine I need to make sure
I contain some of this so that the readership will buy my product, however 60%
would prefer to see some available prizes in the magazine and get a send off slip
to send off to enter the competition. Overall to make my magazine successful I
should add small sections of the content from this question so therefore my
magazine will be a good read and successful to the readership.
Age and Gender
• According to Hartley’s 7 subjectives, the target gender from the demographics of Kerrang! are mainly
male, however the female reading is close as the target audience so therefore the magazine is for old
teenagers and young adults as 56.1% of both genders buy the magazine more than anyone else because
this is the main age at which people of that audience listen and like the music so to follow on from this
demographic reading from Kerrang! I choose to use the same target audience to aim to get my magazine
to that same consumer as those of Kerrang!.
• On the other hand Kerrang! magazine has the ability to inform and educate (Katz) to the audience about
the bands by the use of bold, in your face pictures and simple info the determine the outcome of the
article or story. Therefore will appeal to young ages because they are wanting to get the backstage
information and this is why the demographic for the magazine is 56.1% for the ages of 15-24 who bought
the magazine. So from Kerrang! Informing and education from Katz allows me to research certain types of
language styles and pictures which can educate the consumer as well as get them to like my magazine.
• Finally for the audience of the Kerrang! Magazine they fit into the category of “explorers and caregivers”
(Maslow). To get explorers from Maslow's theory from the outcome of my magazine I need to make sure
that I contain pictures which are in different environments and different types of actions to engage the
reader. However to get caregivers I need to produce in my magazine language styles in the likes of 1st and
3rd person so the reader feels like they are in the same situation as the vocalist or and and start to feel
their exact emotions from the interview.
• Psychographics
• Aspirer – the general psychographics for Kerrang would be aspirers and explorers. In order to make my
magazine similar to that of my inspirational magazine Kerrang! I need to make sure that to get the readers
to become aspirers, I need to make sure I include some competitions in my magazine to win Vans and/or
specific brands which are well known. However to make sure the consumers become explorers I need to
introduce some new band pictures, and more vocalist pictures to get the reader engaged in the hardback
magazine and also include some reason for getting them to buy the magazine by the use of free inserts or
posters of certain bands or vocalists.
• Socio-economic needs
• The socio-economic needs for my magazine would be the classes of B, C1, C2,D and E. My magazine falls
into each of these categories because the readers of Kerrang! Would be the same typical readers which
will read my Revolution! Magazine. However the readers will be these typical classes because for a B class
the readers are sometimes into media such as magazine production, film production and many different
types therefore Revolution! Will benefit those people. The C1 and C2 classes are those types of people
who will read the Kerrang! Magazine and understand it. The lower classes for example the D and E classes
would have the highest readership of Kerrang! Because young teens will want to know about their
favourite bands and will listen and read the magazine about their bands from time to time.
Drawn drafts of front cover and DPS
The mast head of my magazine is going
to be in this type
of font style called Shut’Em down from
dafont. I am going to make the masthead
red in this font style as it conveys how
heavy rock is and that extreme rock will
start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh
pits and violence.
For the front cover main image their will be 3
top artists from 3 of the top rock bands with the
most known artist at the front in a casual style,
the second most popular on the left in dark
clothes and the 3rd artist on the right looking
towards the top artist at an angle to convey the
effects of role models and how well known the
band members are.
The main headline I have chosen is “Inside The
Lyrics! Rock’s biggest stars on the real stories
behind the songs”. The main headline is in a bold
font style with contrasting colours which express
emotions and themes to what's inside. However
the headline looks like circus writing and this
conveys that the unexpected will happen in the
magazine and random things will pop out from
the articles such as tours, prizes, pictures and
articles.
By having posters expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you get
them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members
or bands. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get
the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear.
By having puff promotions expressed on the
front cover, conveys the fact that you have
the opportunity to win prizes in the form of
Win!... Within the magazine causes the
reader to read through it to get to the
competition page. By having this suggests
that more people will buy the magazine to
get the chance to win prizes and read
through and take in the articles before the
competition pages appear.
The barcode is on the left hand side which
conveys the fact that it is on the seam of
the magazine and will force you to take
the magazine out to see the barcode
which makes you see the front cover and
images displayed.
The main headline for my
article/interview I have chosen is
“The Resurrection of Rock” in the
Cooper black font. The main
headline is in a bold font style with
contrasting colours (read and
yellow headline on a white
background) which expresses the
emotions and themes to what's
imbedded within the
article/interview.
The standfirst for my double-
page spread (DPS) is going to be
“For the past two years, Black
Veil Brides have resided in the
dystopian world of the wild ones.
Now, though, they’re ready to
rewrite rock’s rule book. And all
Andy Biersack needed to do was
question everything…”. The font
will be black with red highlighted
key words to contrast to the
white background and create a
visual appeal to the reader
forcing them to read the
standfirst and the interview. The
highlighted words convey who
the band artist is being
interviewed and the band which
he is in.
For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one
hand towards the camera whilst scrunching up a piece of paper. This
will convey the inside setting of the surrounding area and the type of
mood which the artist had during the process in writing the songs. So
by having the artist wear casual clothes in a quiet writing environment
conveys isolation and that the band cares and take pride in their song
lyrics.
The interview, I have decided to
place on the right page of the
double page spread in small, split
columns with red questions and
black font answers to contrast to
the white background, I also am
going to contain an abbreviated
quote so that this is because it
splits up the pages nicely and is
clearly displayed so easier to read,
which means that by having the
main written language of the
article/interview on one side of
the page and the non-
verbal/verbal codes such as the
image on the other side and main
headline and the standfirst to
convey the importance of the
interview to the artist and also
gives the reader time to reflect on
the interview by looking at the
image and makes the reader want
to read on.
The page number I have decided to choose for this DPS is
pages 20-21 because that’s where the main article/interview
is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a similar page number from that
issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and
what content should be based before as a build up to the
main article/interview. However I have also chosen to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead
name by the page number to convey realism and gets the
reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on
social media.
In the bottom right corner of the
DPS I will have an image of the band
to convey what will be contained
about the band in the main
article/interview.
For the front cover main image their will
be 1 top artist from one of the top rock
bands in this case Black Veil Brides with
the artist looking towards the reader
straight on to convey the effects of rock
and the impact it can have on the reader.
The main headline I have chosen is
“Black Veil Brides”. The main
headline is in a bold font style with
bright contrasting colours to the
background which express emotions
and themes to what's inside.
However the headline looks bold and
catchy which conveys that the main
article/interview is going to have
truth and some happiness to it.
By having posters expressed on the
front cover on the left hand side by
the seam, conveys the fact that you
get them free within the magazine and
that they are of most popular band
members or bands. By having this on
the left suggests that more people will
buy the magazine and open the pages
to get the posters out and read
through the articles before the posters
appear.
The mast head of my magazine is going
to be in this type
of font style called Shut’Em down from
dafont. I am going to make the masthead
white in this font style so it contrasts
with the black from the background as it
conveys how heavy rock is and that
extreme rock will start to cause havoc in
the likes of mosh pits and violence.
The barcode is on the right hand side
which conveys the fact that it is on the
opening page of the magazine and will
force you to take the magazine out to see
the barcode which makes you see the
front cover and images displayed.
By having puff promotions expressed
on the front cover, conveys the fact
that you have the opportunity to win
prizes in the form of Win!... Within
the magazine which causes the reader
to read through it to get to the
competition page. By having this
suggests that more people will buy
the magazine to get the chance to win
prizes and read through and take in
the articles before the competition
pages appear.
For the strapline I have chosen “Obey The Past, Present and Future of Rock!, I have followed a similar strapline to
another magazine of my sub-genre in the likes of NME. My strapline conveys the fact that rock will never get old and
in its generation it will have big all time hits. However conveys what artists and bands are in the magazine due to the
strapline saying “Past, Present and Future..” so therefore suggests that rock bands and artists are contained within the
magazine from the past, now in the present and future stars and bands.
The main headline for my
article/interview I have chosen is
“The Resurrection of Rock”, the “The
and Of” are in the Vivaldi font and
the “Resurrection” in the broken
Detroit font from DaFont. The main
headline is in a bold, slim font style
with contrasting colours (White
headline on black background) which
expresses the emotions and themes
to what's imbedded within the
article/interview.
The standfirst for my double-page
spread (DPS) is going to be “For the
past two years, Black Veil Brides
have resided in the dystopian world
of the wild ones. Now, though,
they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule
book. And all Andy Biersack needed
to do was question everything…”.
The font will be white with sky blue
highlighted key words to contrast
and create a visual appeal to the
reader forcing them to read the
standfirst and the interview. The
highlighted words convey who the
band artist is being interviewed and
the band which he is in.
The interview, I have decided to place in the bottom half of the
left page of the double page spread in a small slim, white font to
contrast to the black background, this is because it splits up the
pages nicely so all the written language is on one side of the
page and the non-verbal codes such as the image on the other
however I have an abbreviated quote being placed on the right
page as a little verbal code to convey the importance of the
interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect
on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader
want to read on.
For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one
hand leaning casually on the side of a wall/fence. This will convey the
rural setting of the surround area and the type of mood the interview
will convey throughout, so by having the artist wear black clothes in a
quiet surrounding conveys isolation and that the band sticks out from
the others to cause competition.
The page number I have decided to
choose for the DPS is pages 18-19
because that’s where the main
article/interview is based in an issue
of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing
to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) it
from that issue conveys importance
of the main article/interview and
what content should be based
before as a build up to the main
article/interview. However I have
also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve
Neale-1980) the brand identity
masthead name by the page
number to convey realism and gets
the reader to be able to search up
the name of the magazine on social
media.

Sources of income:
Personnel: I will need an Editor to check each image and language in the interview to make sure it’s the best quality, A
Designer to arrange the images and text in a certain way and a Writer to write and plan out the interview.
To cover the costs in my magazine I will need around about
10 adverts at least to make sure the costs are covered and
earn some extra money to develop the magazine further by
releasing a special issue or developing the magazine more to
make it more appealing to the target consumer. The adverts
will be advertising Vans because they are a top brand to the
readership of Kerrang!, I will also choose clothing because
most people buy band shirts from the bands within my
inspirational magazine. And finally the magazine will also
advertise tour dates because most of the readers will read
about the tour and order tickets to go see their favourite
bands.
For the front cover main image their will
be 1 top artist from one of the top rock
bands in this case Black Veil Brides with
the artist looking towards the reader

The cover lines I have situated on the right

from the main headline and stand out from
the rest of the page as they are in bright
colours and bold fonts.

Legal&Ethical Issues
Copyright
Before producing a magazine you need to be aware of laws which are that you need to be able to make sure that you have
contacted companies and requested there acceptance to use their logo’s or images from a specific website/page to use in the
process of producing your own magazine. Another law is that you need to be able to show proof of your acceptance of the
company to use their logo so that you are not in trouble for copyright laws and if you have proof of the acceptance then you can
use that logo in your magazine. For my magazine I will have the copyright logo just about the masthead of my magazine and I will
do this by filling out a copyright form and sending it off and then get my requested things under copyright.
Contract Challenges
Contract challenges is a second set of legal challenges which arise from the contracts and licensing law. First of all if the company
has allowed you to use their logo or specific image, you have to go through a set of stages of contract signing. This is because
once you sign the contract you are under control by the company and cannot go back on your word so therefore if you decide to
plagiarise without consent then you can be in trouble.
Privacy
Privacy is key when before making your magazine because you need to make sure that you are not giving out any personal
information such as address, number etc. In order to keep your magazine private with all its information you have to consider
keeping the confidential information somewhere safe which no one is eligible to find out. However if you are subscribing to the
magazine to get every issue online or entering a competition privacy is key so that know one knows if subscribing online their
password or personal details such as address and age. Or if entering a competition in the magazine their information is kept safe
and protected so that it doesn’t get lost such as Address.
When producing my own magazine I need to be aware of copyright and privacy. This is because for copyright my masthead name
or logo is secure so no one is able to plagiarise it and use it for a product which their producing. However in order to make them
use my logo or masthead name I will need to be able to give permission to them in order to use the logo or masthead in their
production. Also I will need to protect the risk of copyright for the adverts based in my magazine because they will be all well
known brands and they have asked me to advertise them in my magazine so they should seek permission from users to use their
logo.
However for privacy on the other hand for my magazine I will make sure that you don’t need to fill out any key information in the
magazine so for the competition page I will have a slip which has to be cut out and sent of instead of having to right personal
information in the magazine and it falls out or you lose it and it falls into the wrong hands.

Setting the benchmark is a starting point in the thoughts of what needs to be considered before producing your own
magazine, this is because it allows you to think about the key areas which need to be carefully thought about from copyright
to privacy so that your magazine is secure and under your control. By setting the benchmark you are allowing yourself to
develop and think about ideas further as to what you need to protect from copyright such as a logo, advert or image and for
privacy to protect personal information, from setting the benchmark conveys the idea for professionalism, reliability and
under control.
For my magazine I need to consider what parts of my magazine need to be under the control of copyright and privacy so in
this case for copyright I will need to protect my logo and ,masthead name and the adverts which are contained within my
magazine so that no plagiarism occurs. For privacy I need to make sure I protect the competition page with the slip which you
need to enter the competition so need to make sure the slip can be cut out and sent off so that no one can find out personal
and confidential information about the person.

It is my responsibility to apply the code to editorial material in bot printed and online versions of the publication because I need to be able to
know what the editor and publisher are doing and what suggestions they have come up with. However I need to make sure that I am
responsible for what goes on inside the magazine through the other laws of copyright and privacy so therefore allows me to need to know
what I need to take care off in the likes of proof reading and observing the content of what is going inside the magazine and online to make it
an appropriate magazine for the target audience.
For my magazine I need to check the content and the protection of the logo and images within the magazine to prevent plagiarism because if
the language and content is to inappropriate I need to make sure that it is not put in the magazine. However I also need to check the images
and logo of my magazine for proof of copyright so that no one is eligible to use my logo or images without my consent so I need to double
check it has the appropriate content and appropriate language and style of writing.

For my magazine I need to make sure I am accurate in a majority of places such as the front cover and the double-page spread (DPS) in
order to make sure I am accurate I need to proof read the language used and edit it if I have to I need to make sure that it is the best it
can be. To do this for the front cover for example I need to make sure the position of the picture is just right and the masthead and
picture have the same dimensions which I need for the front cover. I need to make sure that the headline and abbreviated quote are the
exact dimensions and will fit perfectly in the place where I want them to go on the magazine.
Inside the magazine I need to be accurate in the positioning of the Image on the DPS so that it doesn’t overlap any text or doesn’t express
too much emotion. However I need to be accurate in the flow of the interview so it must go smoothly and make sense, however all the
language devices in the magazine need to be accurate in order to convey real emotion into the reader and allow the magazine to express
its real purpose.
• For the PCC the reader is able to generally put in a complaint about articles and pictures,
words and pictures (including video footage) on newspaper and magazine websites, audio
material on newspaper and magazine websites, Readers' letters and edited or moderated
reader comments on newspaper and magazine websites. The PCC can also deal with the
physical behaviour of journalists such as persistent pursuit of individuals, refusing requests to
stop taking photos or asking questions, using hidden cameras to obtain material, failing to be
sensitive when dealing with cases involving grief and shock and failing to obtain the proper
consent before speaking to children or people in hospital.
• To make a complaint the form is on https://www.ipso.co.uk/oxbxApps/app/complaint1.html
as a multiple choice form. The Press Complaints Commission had closed on 8 September
2014 and has been replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) so the
complaints go to them instead.
Sourced from:
https://www.ipso.co.uk/oxbxApps/
app/complaint1.html
• What I need to consider when promoting adverts inside my magazine are that some of those
adverts which are in the magazine have to be checked by the ASA so that they can see if
there will be complaints about them, so therefore the adverts have to be appropriate for the
readership, if not the ASA will start getting many complaints and the magazine wont be able
to advertise that certain product if it keeps happening. However if a complaint does come up
on an advert in the magazine then the ASA will be first to sort it out as they sort out the
adverts over many media platforms to see if they are appropriate and not being racist or
inappropriate that some people might become offended by.
• When promoting the magazine itself, a similar rule applies so the adverts for the magazine on
the TV or on the internet the video must contain appropriate content and must try and not
get any complaints from other people to take the magazine off the TV, which therefore will
cause the magazine to lose profit and lose popularity.

Step-by-step
Firstly I had to choose my background colour which is black
with a faded gradient out to the bottom right corner as this is
what I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980) from my
magazine of inspiration Kerrang! I did this back ground by
using the paint bucket tool.
Secondly I had to draw out the grid lines to where
the masthead is going to go, then I had to go on
www.dafont.com and choose my masthead font
which was Shut’em Down. I made the title white
with a red drop shadow and applied an inner and
outer glow.
1.
2.
Next I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
main image is going to go, then I had to go out and
take photos to place on the front cover. I made the
person in the image scream into a microphone to
convey the real meaning of rock. I had to use the
quick selection tool to get rid of the background
and add an outer glow to bring out the image from
the background.
Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
strapline is going to go, then I had to go and find a
bold font style to make the standfirst stand out I
chose the Myriad Pro font. I made the standfirst by
using the text tool and made the standfirst red
with a yellow drop shadow.
Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
barcode is going to go, then I had to place the
Bauer media logo, Facebook and twitter logo and
the Instagram logo onto the barcode along with a
copy of the masthead for brand identity and
originality.
3.
4.
5.
Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
puff promotion is going to go, then I had to draw
out the circle with the ellipse tool and change the
colour with the paint bucket tool, I then added a
red outer glow by using the eye dropper tool to
get the colour out of the masthead and repeat
that for the drop shadow/stroke. I used the text
tool to create the text and changed the colour of
the win to yellow with a red stroke too to contrast
the background with the puff promotion.
Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
main headline and quote from the interview is
going to go. I used the text tool and the Rosewood
Std font for the Black Veil Brides headline and the
Myriad Pro font for the quote. I changed the
colour of the Black Veil Brides to red with a yellow
drop shadow and made the quote white to
contrast the main image from the main headline
and quote.
6.
7.
Finally I had to draw out the grid lines to where
the puff promotion is going to go, then I had to
draw out the rectangle with the rectangle tool and
change the colour with the paint bucket tool to
red, I then added text using the text tool in the
SoulMission font from www.dafont.com and
changed the colour to yellow to contrast the red
with the yellow.
8.
Step-by-step (DPS)
Firstly I had to choose my background colour
which is black with a faded gradient out to
the bottom right corner as this is what I
chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980) from
my magazine of inspiration Kerrang! I did this
back ground by using the paint bucket tool
and the gradient tool.
Next I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
main image is going to go, then I had to go out and
take photos to place on the DPS. I made the
person in the image lean on the wall with 1 arm
which I have chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale -
1980) from the Kerrang! DPS.
1.
2.
Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the
main headline is going to go. I used the text tool
and the Broken Detroit font from www.dafont.com
for the “revolution” and headline and the Vivaldi
font for the “the”, “of” and “rock”. I changed the
colour of the main headline white to contrast the
headline from the background.
For the brand identity I had to mark out with the grid lines
to were the brand identity and page numbers will go. For
the brand identity I copied the mast head from my front
cover and placed it next to the page number just like my
magazine of inspiration. The page numbers I chose to
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) from an issue of Kerrang! Were
their main article/interview is on the pages of 18 and 19
and will best suit my magazine DPS also.
3.
4.
For the standfirst I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-
1980) a similar format and colour scheme to that
of Kerrang! This is because it reflects emotions
and contrasts to the background so makes it stand
out. The font style which I have used is the Calibri
font in white writing however I chose to use the
eye dropper tool and get the same blue as that in
the standfirst of Kerrang! So that I can highlight
the band name and the artist to get them to stand
out.
For the main interview I chose to use ‘differences’
(Steve Neale-1980) so that the interview will be in
depth and over both pages of the DPS. This is
because it reflects emotions to the reader and
allows the reader to look at the image and the
content on the page whilst reading the interview.
The text I have made white so stands out from the
background and made the questions that of the
same colour as the highlighted words in the
standfirst to contrast to the background and the
answers to differentiate what the questions are
and what the answers are. However I have chosen
to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a quote idea from
Kerrang! And have the quote in white and the
name of the artist in the blue.

Conclusion
• What went well?
• Through the past learning outcomes I have learnt how to use Photoshop properly and how
beneficial it is when making my own magazine, I had leant how to use each of the tools
successfully and had produced a good, quality and purposeful magazine front cover and DPS.
• Another part that went well was that I was able to email Kerrang! And Bauer Media directly
and was able to receive responses from them which had helped me through the learning
outcomes.
• I was able to know and learn in depth all about my magazine of inspiration Kerrang! By being
able to know who the publisher is and the circulation of the magazine dependant on the
copies, so really was a beneficial start to the learning outcome and to learn all about a music
magazine in depth.
• Even better if?
• These previous learning objectives can be improved by trying to add more detail were
possible therefore will make the other learning outcomes much easier to complete.
• Another thing which I could improve on is the layout of my work, even though my work is all
in the PowerPoint from the learning objectives it can get a bit muddled so spreading it out
and less clumped together will make my work more clear and easy to understand.
• Finally the last improvement which I could have done was to keep asking Mr Crafts to check
my work and make sure it has been completed to a distinction standard so that I can move on
to the next learning outcome.

Unit 30 - LO2 and LO3

  • 1. LO 2: Be able to plan an original UK-based media product Name: Jordan Bowers Candidate Number: 4008 Center Name: St. Andrew’s Catholic School Center Number: 64135
  • 2. Mind Map My Magazine Masthead Colour schemes Brand identity Images Magazine release dates Target audience Engage Degenerate Revolution Evolve Medium-close up – takes up a page and applies facial expression and body expression. Low angle shot – priority and status in the rock/music industry High angle shot – Promotion and importance of vocalist to a wide area/audience. Eye level shot – applies facial expression and motion of the vocalist/band. Weekly – My magazine will be released weekly following the trends of Kerrang! This is because it allows the target audience to get up to date with all the bands every week in a small issue. Monthly – My magazine could be released monthly because it can be a special issue giving all the info about the bands every month in a big issue. For my target audience I can apply the same audience to my magazine, from the readership of Kerrang! This allows me to create a magazine which best suits the target audience based on the Kerrang! readership by adding pictures and info related to the bands similar to Kerrang!. Price £1 £1.25 £1.50 £1.75 £2+
  • 3. Mood Board - Genre
  • 4. • The reason why I have chosen the specific images on the genre mood board is because each individual image relates in some way to the typical readership of Kerrang! For example Vans is a top brand which most of the Kerrang! Target readership have therefore will be a typical aim to advertise in my magazine. Another image is Monster energy, this is because this drink is in supermarkets and small corner shops therefore any reader of the readership is able to afford the drink and because it has caffeine and gives you a boost of energy allows the reader to become addicted to the drink and get ready for concerts or parties. • Overall in conclusion the images are specific to the target readership as most of the images are advertised within the Kerrang! Magazine so therefore allows the opportunity for the readership to buy the magazine and see or buy the products which are held inside. Conclusion for mood board
  • 5. Mood board - Magazine
  • 6. Font styles and Masthead name ideas
  • 7. Main headline • The main headline I have chosen to have Black Veil Brides in the Shut’em down font from www.dafont.com. This is because Black Veil Brides are a top rock band which are featured in most issues of Kerrang! Therefore to have them featured as the main story in Revolution! Will prove to Kerrang! And NME that my magazine will be a top competitor trying to cover the bands first. • The Shut’em down font is a very expressive font which conveys the true meaning of rock as well as proving what culture the band is and what type of music they do.by having cracks and holes in the font conveys that rock can shatter things from the use of guitars, drums and vocals. • The colours which I choose to use would be mainly red for the text, however I will be adding a yellow drop shadow to the text which will make it contrast to the background and stand out to the readers eye what they main article in the magazine is going to be about as well as forcing the readers to buy the magazine as it has caught their eye from the colours and the font style.
  • 8. Genre • I am going to produce a magazine similar to the genre of my magazine of inspiration which is Kerrang!. The genre of Kerrang! is Rock so I am going to try and make a magazine which best tries to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) some of the codes and conventions of the Kerrang! Magazine such as the front cover, short quote form the DPS, Standfirst but adapt the colours and also the background of the DPS. I have chosen rock as my genre because Kerrang! Contains images in the likes of top rock bands such as ‘Black Veil Brides’, ‘Green Day’ and ‘Bring me the Horizon’, which I listen to in my free time so in my opinion these 3 rock bands are widely known through the UK and by producing another rock magazine will increase the audience further and get people to like both Kerrang! and my magazine. Kerrang! however is available weekly rather than monthly due the content within the magazine which is short, sweet and straight to the point so it allows me to easily explore the codes and conventions inside Kerrang! and ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) and/or adapt some of them to contain in my magazine from Kerrang!. I will also choose to adapt some conventions to make my magazine look more of a rock magazine by using conventions such as a microphone or big speakers, or by simply changing some of the colours on the front cover or DPS. To present a USP to the target readership I will be making some ‘differences’ (Steve Neale-1980). I will be changing the font styles of each of the pages of the front cover and double page spread so that my magazine will look more like a typical rock magazine. Secondly I would change the layout of the double page spread as the article is only on one page of the DPS, so by changing this so it spreads over both pages allows the reader to view the main headline, read some of the article and also see the images which are provided on the DPS to get a feel for the artist in the article/interview and their emotions.
  • 9. The non-verbal code of the main image conveys that the content inside the magazine will be right in your face and give you a straight emotion depending on the type of images and the type of language which has been used. I would adapt the main image by having the same size but changing the main image instead of having hands on the collar I would stand their with my hands around a microphone and screaming in to it. I will choose to adapt this image to screaming into a microphone because it contains the same principle and is conveying the fact what is in the magazine on the double-page spread (DPS). The verbal codes in the bottom half of the magazine convey what the main story in the magazine is going to be about. It is bright, bold , contrasting colours which looks visually appealing because it contrasts to a the dark background and main image. It automatically draws your eyes to the main image and the main headline. I choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea as it is expressive and catchy, so by adapting this slightly I can have a slightly brighter shade of yellow and a red drop shadow. This is because it will look more visually appealing and also appeals straight to the readers eye. The verbal code in the circular sticker in the middle of the page on the right hand side conveys a little extra to the magazine front cover by explaining what else is in the magazine other that the main story. In this case it is ‘Exclusive interviews’ which therefore gives the reader a more likely opinion to go and buy the magazine just by looking at the front cover. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea by using the same colours, however I will adapt the shape slightly so it will be more appealing and change the verbal codes within the circle so it relates and is relevant to my magazine. The non-verbal code of the background conveys darkness and isolation. This is because the darkness relates to the verbal code “Things are darker this time around…” which is a small quote out of the DPS. I choose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea of the background colour scheme and verbal code from the article because it conveys the front cover with the background and conveys what type of info is on the double page spread. ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980)
  • 10. The non-verbal code of the main image on the double page spread conveys that the content in the article will be about what the image is conveying to give you a straight emotion depending on how you look at the image and the type of language which has been used. I would adapt the main image on the DPS by having the same size but adapting the main image instead of having a casual hand on the side I would stand their with my arms folded with one foot on the wall looking casual and straight to the point. I will choose to adapt the main image to leaning on a wall because it contains the same principle but develops the information in the article a bit further. The verbal codes on the left hand page and one on the right hand page at the bottom as an abbreviated quote of the magazine DPS convey what the article is going to contain. The main headline is bold, funky and a large size with using contrasting colours which looks visually appealing because it contrasts to a the dark background and main image. It automatically draws your eyes to the article and the main image. The standfirst is a bold font which is white, therefore does a similar thing to the main headline but contains some highlighted key words in a bright colour to introduce who the band are and who will be interviewed or speaking in the article. So to adapt this slightly I can have a slightly bolder main headline to introduce what type of information will be contained in the article. This is because it will look more visually appealing and also appeals straight to the readers eye. I will ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the standfirst by using different colours to highlight key words so it looks bold and eye catching. The non-verbal code of the background conveys rural, casual and a calm surrounding. This is because the article might have been stated with the vocalist in a similar type of surrounding. I choose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) this idea of the background because it conveys simplicity and calmness to the reader of the magazine. The verbal code of the page number and brand identity at the bottom of the pages on the far bottom left and far bottom right of the page convey the fact that the main article will be close to the front or in the middle of the magazine, and by having the brand identity on each page next to the page number allows the reader to see the logo on every page and are forced to search it. I will adapt this idea by changing the page numbers and the brand identity. ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980)
  • 11. Strapline • The past, present and future of music (NME) • The connotations of this strapline is that by stating the words past, present and future automatically injects the idea to the reader that within the issues f the magazine their will be different music tastes from bands who were popular in the past such as the Rolling stones, the Beatles, in the present they state artists in the likes of Ariana Grande, Rita Ora, Eminem and Taylor swift. However for the future it connotes that the magazine will state small story's about upcoming artists who NME think will make the charts and be good music artists for different music tastes. • The overall general readership of NME magazine from its strapline will be aimed at both genders of a range of ages, as NME has content in their which was in the past sometime ago with artists which the older generation will know. However in the present teens will look at that section because it is the time which most of the known artists are playing and doing tours which are of our generation, but in the future part it aims to reach the teenagers again and some of the older generation because it has content which explains the up coming artists who could hit the top of the charts. • My strapline is going to contain similar language in the form of The past, present and future of music from NME magazine because it states about what music has been most listened to in the past, present and what is going to be top hits in the future. So an idea of a strapline which will best suit my magazine would be the same type of language as the one from NME but in the form of Obey the past, present and future of rock!. • 12. Layout The front cover of Kerrang! Is similar to that of NME because as they both are similar types of magazines they will often convey similar conventions such as a medium close up. I think a medium close up is one of the best shot types you can have on a magazine front cover because the majority of the music front covers all have one. It appeals most because it enables the reader to focus on the facial expression of the vocalist on the front cover to give you a straight forward idea to what type of magazine genre it is going to be. The main story on the front cover is always in a bright contrasting colour to the background or the main image. This is an appealing idea for a magazine because it focuses your eyes straight on the main story and what the story is going to be about. The contrasting colours for the style are a very strong convention which is very appealing because it makes the main story stand out from the main image and the main image stand out from the background. The quote from the main article/interview in the magazine will be similar between both Kerrang! And NME because as they are similar magazines they still convey most of the same conventions and by having a quote gives a sharp, snappy idea of what is mentioned in the main article. This is a convention because it allows the reader to pick up the magazine and see what type of content is contained in the issue and see whether or not they want to buy the magazine.
  • 13. The DPS of Kerrang! Is similar to that of NME because as they both are similar types of magazines they will often convey similar conventions such as a medium shots and abbreviated quotes. I think medium shots are one of the best shot types you can have on a magazine DPS because the majority of the main DPS all have one. It appeals most because it enables the reader to focus on the facial expression of the vocalist on the Info on the page to give you a straight forward idea to what type of information the article will contain based on the facial expression. The abbreviated quote from the main article/interview in the magazine will be similar between both Kerrang! And NME because as they are similar magazines they still convey most of the same conventions and by having a quote as either a main headline or on the side to give a sharp, snappy idea of what is mentioned in the main article. This is a convention because it allows the reader to automatically get into the article and see what type of content is contained in the issue and see whether or not they want to keep reading the article or ignore it from the abbreviated quote. The main story in the DPS is always a contrast colour to the background or the main image. This is an appealing idea for a magazine DPS because it focuses your eyes straight on the main headline and the standfirst of the article. The contrasting colours for the style are a very strong convention which is very appealing because it makes the main article stand out from the main image and the main image stand out from the background.
  • 14. House Style The colour scheme which I am going to use for the front cover of my magazine will be a Black/grey background with a Bold, red headline will a yellow drop shadow in the foreground, however across each of the pages such as the DPS I will use the colours Black as a background for half the page, turquoise highlighted text in certain areas and white text on top of the black background to create contrasts. I choose to ‘Repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the same colour scheme as from my magazine of inspiration which is Kerrang!. I am going to achieve the same colour scheme through the magazine by using a tool called the ‘eye dropper’ in Adobe Photoshop. This is because the eye dropper can get the exact colour from an image and apply the same colour to a design or product which has been created on Photoshop. Front Cover Double-page spread (DPS)
  • 17. Spending power • The spending power of the audience for my magazine will need to be relevant because the target audience will be wanting to buy products from the magazine as well as buying the magazine itself so my magazine will need to have a relevant buying price. Overall from looking at the demographics of the readership for a typical rock magazine such as Kerrang! And NME the spending power of the target audience will be fairly high but not to expensive as 46% are from the ABC1 categories therefore need to advertise products which are a fair price but not to expensive so the readership can be able to buy the magazine. • However the readership will want to buy the magazine because within it there will be adverts which are related to bands such as jumpers, t-shirts and CD’s, therefore the audience will want to buy the magazine so they can see what's on offer from the adverts and be able to afford their favourite band merchandise from the magazine.
  • 18. Advertising in Kerrang! Kerrang! Had teamed up with Paco Rabanne to promote their new product Black XS. This type of product was advertised through the Kerrang! Magazine as the target audience like to wear black, therefore by promoting a new product which was black allowed Paco Rabanne to get a good audience through the widely spread rock magazine of Kerrang!. Kerrang! Had advertised energy drinks in their magazine such as Relentless. Energy drinks were advertised through the magazine because the typical readers like to drink energy drinks. Therefore by advertising these drinks to the readership they will then feel the need to go and buy one as they are being advertised in the magazine. Download festival has been advertised in Kerrang! Many times, this is because it is probably rocks greatest festival going, therefore by advertising Download and the set list for who is going to be playing at the festival urges the readers to go to this festival and enjoy there type of music.
  • 19. Survey Monkey Research From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for this survey is male so my magazine should be based around the male gender by including band pictures and interviews on top bands/vocalists as they are mostly male themselves as its rare to find a female vocalist for rock bands. From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for this survey are between the ages of 16-20 so my magazine should contain content which will best suit 16-20 year olds. Such as deep information and engaging pictures to appeal to the target age group. From this research I found out that the majority of the people who did this survey voted Revolution as my main masthead so therefore I am going to go with Revolution as it has the highest percentage and appeals the most to the people who did the survey.
  • 20. From this research I found out that the majority of the readership of a rock magazine will be willing to pay £2.10+ so for my magazine I need to consider the fact of the amount and depth of which the content is within the magazine and include pictures, posters and free hand-outs which will be worth the full price. From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for a rock magazine chose to release the magazine monthly as apposed to weekly and fortnightly. So I have considered to release my magazine monthly as apposed to these results as it appeals more to a higher percentage of people. Which having releasing the magazine monthly connotes the fact that more detail can be included and you can buy 1 hardcopy per month instead of buying one for a week and missing an issue because the next one is out. From this question I found out that the majority of the readership for a rock magazine would prefer the magazine to be marketed online other then superstores, TV adverts and other magazines which connotes the fact more people are using the internet in our days so therefore more people will see it on social media and go onto the homepage. So I could make a website based around my magazine so that people can subscribe and buy the magazine online.
  • 21. From this question in the survey I found out that the majority of people would like to see interviews and tour dates within the magazine and also some forms of stories about the bands and advertisements so that the consumer will keep buying the magazine or maybe even a subscription to get the latest magazine. Finally from this research I found out that the majority of the people who answered the survey would recommend a rock magazine to others because its deep in content and also other people might recommend you a magazine and you recommend one back.
  • 22. Questionnaire research 80% 20% Gender Age 60% 20%20% Are you a fan of rock magazines? 50% 50% From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for this survey is male so my magazine should be based around the male gender by including band pictures and interviews on top bands/vocalists as they are mostly male themselves as its rare to find a female vocalist for rock bands. From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for this survey are 17so my magazine should contain content which will best suit 17 year olds. Such as deep information and engaging pictures to appeal to the target age group. From this result I found out that the results of this question was 50/50 so I need to consider certain images and text language and colour schemes to make sure that people who don’t read rock magazines will start to due to the content and the images and the colour scheme which my magazine will contain.
  • 23. What rock magazine do you prefer? What masthead is best for a rock magazine? What price would you pay for a rock magazine? 60% 30% 10% 50% 30% 20% 50% 40% 10% The majority of the audience preferred to read Kerrang! So from this result of my questionnaire I can decide to base my magazine more around the regions of Kerrang! Other than NME so that the target audience will like to buy my product and boost the target market by getting more people into the likes of Kerrang! Through my magazine. From this result I found out that the majority of the people who answered my questionnaire preferred the masthead name Revolution so in consideration based on this result I can decide what my masthead should be to appeal more to the target readership. From this research I found out that the majority of the readership of a rock magazine will be willing to pay in the regions of £1.60-£2.00 so for my magazine I need to consider the fact of the amount and depth of which the content is within the magazine and include pictures, posters and free hand-outs which will be worth the full price.
  • 24. How often should a rock magazine be released? Would you recommend a rock magazine to others? What should be covered in the magazine? 40% 30% 30% 90% 20% 70% 60% 60% 40% From this research I found out that the majority of the readership for a rock magazine chose to release the magazine fortnightly as apposed to weekly and monthly. So I have considered to release my magazine fortnightly as apposed to these results as it appeals more to a higher percentage of people. Which having releasing the magazine fortnightly connotes the fact that more detail can be included and you can buy 1 hardcopy every fortnight so you have 14 days to buy the product instead of buying one every week and only having 7 days to buy the product before a new one comes out. From this question in the survey I found out that the majority of people would like to see interviews and stories within the magazine and also some forms of tour dates about the bands and advertisements so that the consumer will keep buying the magazine or maybe even start a subscription to get the latest magazine. Finally from this research I found out that the majority of the people who answered the survey would recommend a rock magazine to others because its deep in content and also other people might recommend you a magazine and you recommend one back.
  • 25. How should a rock magazine be marketed? Should a rock magazine have free inserts? What should a rock magazine contain? 60% 40% 30% 20% 90% 10% 70% 30% 60% 70% 40% 40% From this question I found out that the majority of the readership for a rock magazine would prefer the magazine to be marketed online other then superstores, TV adverts and other magazines which connotes the fact more people are using the internet in our days so therefore more people will see it on social media and go onto the homepage. So I could make a website based around my magazine so that people can subscribe and buy the magazine online. From this research I found out that 90% of the people who answered the questionnaire will prefer to have free inserts in a rock magazine because as well as getting posters and content in the actual hardback magazine, you can get free stickers or competition slips etc. The majority of the readership of the magazine from my questionnaire would like to see competitions and interviews so for my magazine I need to make sure I contain some of this so that the readership will buy my product, however 60% would prefer to see some available prizes in the magazine and get a send off slip to send off to enter the competition. Overall to make my magazine successful I should add small sections of the content from this question so therefore my magazine will be a good read and successful to the readership.
  • 26. Age and Gender • According to Hartley’s 7 subjectives, the target gender from the demographics of Kerrang! are mainly male, however the female reading is close as the target audience so therefore the magazine is for old teenagers and young adults as 56.1% of both genders buy the magazine more than anyone else because this is the main age at which people of that audience listen and like the music so to follow on from this demographic reading from Kerrang! I choose to use the same target audience to aim to get my magazine to that same consumer as those of Kerrang!. • On the other hand Kerrang! magazine has the ability to inform and educate (Katz) to the audience about the bands by the use of bold, in your face pictures and simple info the determine the outcome of the article or story. Therefore will appeal to young ages because they are wanting to get the backstage information and this is why the demographic for the magazine is 56.1% for the ages of 15-24 who bought the magazine. So from Kerrang! Informing and education from Katz allows me to research certain types of language styles and pictures which can educate the consumer as well as get them to like my magazine. • Finally for the audience of the Kerrang! Magazine they fit into the category of “explorers and caregivers” (Maslow). To get explorers from Maslow's theory from the outcome of my magazine I need to make sure that I contain pictures which are in different environments and different types of actions to engage the reader. However to get caregivers I need to produce in my magazine language styles in the likes of 1st and 3rd person so the reader feels like they are in the same situation as the vocalist or and and start to feel their exact emotions from the interview. • Psychographics • Aspirer – the general psychographics for Kerrang would be aspirers and explorers. In order to make my magazine similar to that of my inspirational magazine Kerrang! I need to make sure that to get the readers to become aspirers, I need to make sure I include some competitions in my magazine to win Vans and/or specific brands which are well known. However to make sure the consumers become explorers I need to introduce some new band pictures, and more vocalist pictures to get the reader engaged in the hardback magazine and also include some reason for getting them to buy the magazine by the use of free inserts or posters of certain bands or vocalists.
  • 27. • Socio-economic needs • The socio-economic needs for my magazine would be the classes of B, C1, C2,D and E. My magazine falls into each of these categories because the readers of Kerrang! Would be the same typical readers which will read my Revolution! Magazine. However the readers will be these typical classes because for a B class the readers are sometimes into media such as magazine production, film production and many different types therefore Revolution! Will benefit those people. The C1 and C2 classes are those types of people who will read the Kerrang! Magazine and understand it. The lower classes for example the D and E classes would have the highest readership of Kerrang! Because young teens will want to know about their favourite bands and will listen and read the magazine about their bands from time to time.
  • 28. Drawn drafts of front cover and DPS The mast head of my magazine is going to be in this type of font style called Shut’Em down from dafont. I am going to make the masthead red in this font style as it conveys how heavy rock is and that extreme rock will start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh pits and violence. For the front cover main image their will be 3 top artists from 3 of the top rock bands with the most known artist at the front in a casual style, the second most popular on the left in dark clothes and the 3rd artist on the right looking towards the top artist at an angle to convey the effects of role models and how well known the band members are. The main headline I have chosen is “Inside The Lyrics! Rock’s biggest stars on the real stories behind the songs”. The main headline is in a bold font style with contrasting colours which express emotions and themes to what's inside. However the headline looks like circus writing and this conveys that the unexpected will happen in the magazine and random things will pop out from the articles such as tours, prizes, pictures and articles. By having posters expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you get them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members or bands. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear. By having puff promotions expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you have the opportunity to win prizes in the form of Win!... Within the magazine causes the reader to read through it to get to the competition page. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the chance to win prizes and read through and take in the articles before the competition pages appear. The barcode is on the left hand side which conveys the fact that it is on the seam of the magazine and will force you to take the magazine out to see the barcode which makes you see the front cover and images displayed.
  • 29. The main headline for my article/interview I have chosen is “The Resurrection of Rock” in the Cooper black font. The main headline is in a bold font style with contrasting colours (read and yellow headline on a white background) which expresses the emotions and themes to what's imbedded within the article/interview. The standfirst for my double- page spread (DPS) is going to be “For the past two years, Black Veil Brides have resided in the dystopian world of the wild ones. Now, though, they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule book. And all Andy Biersack needed to do was question everything…”. The font will be black with red highlighted key words to contrast to the white background and create a visual appeal to the reader forcing them to read the standfirst and the interview. The highlighted words convey who the band artist is being interviewed and the band which he is in. For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one hand towards the camera whilst scrunching up a piece of paper. This will convey the inside setting of the surrounding area and the type of mood which the artist had during the process in writing the songs. So by having the artist wear casual clothes in a quiet writing environment conveys isolation and that the band cares and take pride in their song lyrics. The interview, I have decided to place on the right page of the double page spread in small, split columns with red questions and black font answers to contrast to the white background, I also am going to contain an abbreviated quote so that this is because it splits up the pages nicely and is clearly displayed so easier to read, which means that by having the main written language of the article/interview on one side of the page and the non- verbal/verbal codes such as the image on the other side and main headline and the standfirst to convey the importance of the interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader want to read on. The page number I have decided to choose for this DPS is pages 20-21 because that’s where the main article/interview is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a similar page number from that issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and what content should be based before as a build up to the main article/interview. However I have also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead name by the page number to convey realism and gets the reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on social media. In the bottom right corner of the DPS I will have an image of the band to convey what will be contained about the band in the main article/interview.
  • 30. For the front cover main image their will be 1 top artist from one of the top rock bands in this case Black Veil Brides with the artist looking towards the reader straight on to convey the effects of rock and the impact it can have on the reader. The main headline I have chosen is “Black Veil Brides”. The main headline is in a bold font style with bright contrasting colours to the background which express emotions and themes to what's inside. However the headline looks bold and catchy which conveys that the main article/interview is going to have truth and some happiness to it. By having posters expressed on the front cover on the left hand side by the seam, conveys the fact that you get them free within the magazine and that they are of most popular band members or bands. By having this on the left suggests that more people will buy the magazine and open the pages to get the posters out and read through the articles before the posters appear. The mast head of my magazine is going to be in this type of font style called Shut’Em down from dafont. I am going to make the masthead white in this font style so it contrasts with the black from the background as it conveys how heavy rock is and that extreme rock will start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh pits and violence. The barcode is on the right hand side which conveys the fact that it is on the opening page of the magazine and will force you to take the magazine out to see the barcode which makes you see the front cover and images displayed. By having puff promotions expressed on the front cover, conveys the fact that you have the opportunity to win prizes in the form of Win!... Within the magazine which causes the reader to read through it to get to the competition page. By having this suggests that more people will buy the magazine to get the chance to win prizes and read through and take in the articles before the competition pages appear. For the strapline I have chosen “Obey The Past, Present and Future of Rock!, I have followed a similar strapline to another magazine of my sub-genre in the likes of NME. My strapline conveys the fact that rock will never get old and in its generation it will have big all time hits. However conveys what artists and bands are in the magazine due to the strapline saying “Past, Present and Future..” so therefore suggests that rock bands and artists are contained within the magazine from the past, now in the present and future stars and bands.
  • 31. The main headline for my article/interview I have chosen is “The Resurrection of Rock”, the “The and Of” are in the Vivaldi font and the “Resurrection” in the broken Detroit font from DaFont. The main headline is in a bold, slim font style with contrasting colours (White headline on black background) which expresses the emotions and themes to what's imbedded within the article/interview. The standfirst for my double-page spread (DPS) is going to be “For the past two years, Black Veil Brides have resided in the dystopian world of the wild ones. Now, though, they’re ready to rewrite rock’s rule book. And all Andy Biersack needed to do was question everything…”. The font will be white with sky blue highlighted key words to contrast and create a visual appeal to the reader forcing them to read the standfirst and the interview. The highlighted words convey who the band artist is being interviewed and the band which he is in. The interview, I have decided to place in the bottom half of the left page of the double page spread in a small slim, white font to contrast to the black background, this is because it splits up the pages nicely so all the written language is on one side of the page and the non-verbal codes such as the image on the other however I have an abbreviated quote being placed on the right page as a little verbal code to convey the importance of the interview to the artist and also gives the reader time to reflect on the interview by looking at the image and makes the reader want to read on. For the main image I am going to take a picture of the artist with one hand leaning casually on the side of a wall/fence. This will convey the rural setting of the surround area and the type of mood the interview will convey throughout, so by having the artist wear black clothes in a quiet surrounding conveys isolation and that the band sticks out from the others to cause competition. The page number I have decided to choose for the DPS is pages 18-19 because that’s where the main article/interview is based in an issue of Kerrang! Therefore by choosing to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) it from that issue conveys importance of the main article/interview and what content should be based before as a build up to the main article/interview. However I have also chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) the brand identity masthead name by the page number to convey realism and gets the reader to be able to search up the name of the magazine on social media.

Who: Editor, writer and designer Complete by: Complete by: Complete by: Complete by: Complete by: Complete by: Complete by: 24th November 2014 25th November 2014 26th November 2014 27th November 2014 28th November 2014 29th November 2014 30th November 2014 Sources of income: Personnel: I will need an Editor to check each image and language in the interview to make sure it’s the best quality, A Designer to arrange the images and text in a certain way and a Writer to write and plan out the interview. To cover the costs in my magazine I will need around about 10 adverts at least to make sure the costs are covered and earn some extra money to develop the magazine further by releasing a special issue or developing the magazine more to make it more appealing to the target consumer. The adverts will be advertising Vans because they are a top brand to the readership of Kerrang!, I will also choose clothing because most people buy band shirts from the bands within my inspirational magazine. And finally the magazine will also advertise tour dates because most of the readers will read about the tour and order tickets to go see their favourite bands.
  • 36. The mast head of my magazine is going to be in this type of font style called Shut'em down from www.dafont.com I am going to make the masthead white in this font style so it contrasts with the black from the background as it conveys how heavy rock is and that extreme rock will start to cause havoc in the likes of mosh pits and violence. The cover lines I have situated on the right hand side of the page so they are away from the main headline and stand out from the rest of the page as they are in bright colours and bold fonts.
  • 37. The main headline for my article/interview I have chosen is “The Resurrection of Rock”, the “The and Of” are in the Vivaldi font and the “Resurrection” in the broken Detroit font from www.DaFont.com The main headline is in a bold, slim font style with contrasting colours (White headline on black background) which expresses the emotions and themes to what's imbedded within the article/interview. After the interview I have put social media links to contact the artist or follow him on, however I have added a link too so that you can go online and read the full interview online.

Legal&Ethical Issues Copyright Before producing a magazine you need to be aware of laws which are that you need to be able to make sure that you have contacted companies and requested there acceptance to use their logo’s or images from a specific website/page to use in the process of producing your own magazine. Another law is that you need to be able to show proof of your acceptance of the company to use their logo so that you are not in trouble for copyright laws and if you have proof of the acceptance then you can use that logo in your magazine. For my magazine I will have the copyright logo just about the masthead of my magazine and I will do this by filling out a copyright form and sending it off and then get my requested things under copyright. Contract Challenges Contract challenges is a second set of legal challenges which arise from the contracts and licensing law. First of all if the company has allowed you to use their logo or specific image, you have to go through a set of stages of contract signing. This is because once you sign the contract you are under control by the company and cannot go back on your word so therefore if you decide to plagiarise without consent then you can be in trouble. Privacy Privacy is key when before making your magazine because you need to make sure that you are not giving out any personal information such as address, number etc. In order to keep your magazine private with all its information you have to consider keeping the confidential information somewhere safe which no one is eligible to find out. However if you are subscribing to the magazine to get every issue online or entering a competition privacy is key so that know one knows if subscribing online their password or personal details such as address and age. Or if entering a competition in the magazine their information is kept safe and protected so that it doesn’t get lost such as Address. When producing my own magazine I need to be aware of copyright and privacy. This is because for copyright my masthead name or logo is secure so no one is able to plagiarise it and use it for a product which their producing. However in order to make them use my logo or masthead name I will need to be able to give permission to them in order to use the logo or masthead in their production. Also I will need to protect the risk of copyright for the adverts based in my magazine because they will be all well known brands and they have asked me to advertise them in my magazine so they should seek permission from users to use their logo. However for privacy on the other hand for my magazine I will make sure that you don’t need to fill out any key information in the magazine so for the competition page I will have a slip which has to be cut out and sent of instead of having to right personal information in the magazine and it falls out or you lose it and it falls into the wrong hands. © Source: http://www.cla.co.uk/copyright _information/copyright_inform ation Source: http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html
  • 39. Setting the benchmark is a starting point in the thoughts of what needs to be considered before producing your own magazine, this is because it allows you to think about the key areas which need to be carefully thought about from copyright to privacy so that your magazine is secure and under your control. By setting the benchmark you are allowing yourself to develop and think about ideas further as to what you need to protect from copyright such as a logo, advert or image and for privacy to protect personal information, from setting the benchmark conveys the idea for professionalism, reliability and under control. For my magazine I need to consider what parts of my magazine need to be under the control of copyright and privacy so in this case for copyright I will need to protect my logo and ,masthead name and the adverts which are contained within my magazine so that no plagiarism occurs. For privacy I need to make sure I protect the competition page with the slip which you need to enter the competition so need to make sure the slip can be cut out and sent off so that no one can find out personal and confidential information about the person. Legal&Ethical Issues continued… Sourced from: http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html It is my responsibility to apply the code to editorial material in bot printed and online versions of the publication because I need to be able to know what the editor and publisher are doing and what suggestions they have come up with. However I need to make sure that I am responsible for what goes on inside the magazine through the other laws of copyright and privacy so therefore allows me to need to know what I need to take care off in the likes of proof reading and observing the content of what is going inside the magazine and online to make it an appropriate magazine for the target audience. For my magazine I need to check the content and the protection of the logo and images within the magazine to prevent plagiarism because if the language and content is to inappropriate I need to make sure that it is not put in the magazine. However I also need to check the images and logo of my magazine for proof of copyright so that no one is eligible to use my logo or images without my consent so I need to double check it has the appropriate content and appropriate language and style of writing. • 40. Sourced from: http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html For my magazine I need to make sure I am accurate in a majority of places such as the front cover and the double-page spread (DPS) in order to make sure I am accurate I need to proof read the language used and edit it if I have to I need to make sure that it is the best it can be. To do this for the front cover for example I need to make sure the position of the picture is just right and the masthead and picture have the same dimensions which I need for the front cover. I need to make sure that the headline and abbreviated quote are the exact dimensions and will fit perfectly in the place where I want them to go on the magazine. Inside the magazine I need to be accurate in the positioning of the Image on the DPS so that it doesn’t overlap any text or doesn’t express too much emotion. However I need to be accurate in the flow of the interview so it must go smoothly and make sense, however all the language devices in the magazine need to be accurate in order to convey real emotion into the reader and allow the magazine to express its real purpose.

The PCC can also deal with the physical behaviour of journalists such as persistent pursuit of individuals, refusing requests to stop taking photos or asking questions, using hidden cameras to obtain material, failing to be sensitive when dealing with cases involving grief and shock and failing to obtain the proper consent before speaking to children or people in hospital. • To make a complaint the form is on https://www.ipso.co.uk/oxbxApps/app/complaint1.html as a multiple choice form. The Press Complaints Commission had closed on 8 September 2014 and has been replaced by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) so the complaints go to them instead. • 42. • What I need to consider when promoting adverts inside my magazine are that some of those adverts which are in the magazine have to be checked by the ASA so that they can see if there will be complaints about them, so therefore the adverts have to be appropriate for the readership, if not the ASA will start getting many complaints and the magazine wont be able to advertise that certain product if it keeps happening. However if a complaint does come up on an advert in the magazine then the ASA will be first to sort it out as they sort out the adverts over many media platforms to see if they are appropriate and not being racist or inappropriate that some people might become offended by. • When promoting the magazine itself, a similar rule applies so the adverts for the magazine on the TV or on the internet the video must contain appropriate content and must try and not get any complaints from other people to take the magazine off the TV, which therefore will cause the magazine to lose profit and lose popularity. • Source: http://asa.org.uk/
  • 43. Step-by-step Firstly I had to choose my background colour which is black with a faded gradient out to the bottom right corner as this is what I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980) from my magazine of inspiration Kerrang! I did this back ground by using the paint bucket tool. Secondly I had to draw out the grid lines to where the masthead is going to go, then I had to go on www.dafont.com and choose my masthead font which was Shut’em Down. I made the title white with a red drop shadow and applied an inner and outer glow. 1. 2.
  • 44. Next I had to draw out the grid lines to where the main image is going to go, then I had to go out and take photos to place on the front cover. I made the person in the image scream into a microphone to convey the real meaning of rock. I had to use the quick selection tool to get rid of the background and add an outer glow to bring out the image from the background. Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the strapline is going to go, then I had to go and find a bold font style to make the standfirst stand out I chose the Myriad Pro font. I made the standfirst by using the text tool and made the standfirst red with a yellow drop shadow. Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the barcode is going to go, then I had to place the Bauer media logo, Facebook and twitter logo and the Instagram logo onto the barcode along with a copy of the masthead for brand identity and originality. 3. 4. 5.
  • 45. Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the puff promotion is going to go, then I had to draw out the circle with the ellipse tool and change the colour with the paint bucket tool, I then added a red outer glow by using the eye dropper tool to get the colour out of the masthead and repeat that for the drop shadow/stroke. I used the text tool to create the text and changed the colour of the win to yellow with a red stroke too to contrast the background with the puff promotion. Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the main headline and quote from the interview is going to go. I used the text tool and the Rosewood Std font for the Black Veil Brides headline and the Myriad Pro font for the quote. I changed the colour of the Black Veil Brides to red with a yellow drop shadow and made the quote white to contrast the main image from the main headline and quote. 6. 7.
  • 46. Finally I had to draw out the grid lines to where the puff promotion is going to go, then I had to draw out the rectangle with the rectangle tool and change the colour with the paint bucket tool to red, I then added text using the text tool in the SoulMission font from www.dafont.com and changed the colour to yellow to contrast the red with the yellow. 8.
  • 47. Step-by-step (DPS) Firstly I had to choose my background colour which is black with a faded gradient out to the bottom right corner as this is what I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980) from my magazine of inspiration Kerrang! I did this back ground by using the paint bucket tool and the gradient tool. Next I had to draw out the grid lines to where the main image is going to go, then I had to go out and take photos to place on the DPS. I made the person in the image lean on the wall with 1 arm which I have chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale - 1980) from the Kerrang! DPS. 1. 2.
  • 48. Then I had to draw out the grid lines to where the main headline is going to go. I used the text tool and the Broken Detroit font from www.dafont.com for the “revolution” and headline and the Vivaldi font for the “the”, “of” and “rock”. I changed the colour of the main headline white to contrast the headline from the background. For the brand identity I had to mark out with the grid lines to were the brand identity and page numbers will go. For the brand identity I copied the mast head from my front cover and placed it next to the page number just like my magazine of inspiration. The page numbers I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) from an issue of Kerrang! Were their main article/interview is on the pages of 18 and 19 and will best suit my magazine DPS also. 3. 4.
  • 49. For the standfirst I chose to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale- 1980) a similar format and colour scheme to that of Kerrang! This is because it reflects emotions and contrasts to the background so makes it stand out. The font style which I have used is the Calibri font in white writing however I chose to use the eye dropper tool and get the same blue as that in the standfirst of Kerrang! So that I can highlight the band name and the artist to get them to stand out. For the main interview I chose to use ‘differences’ (Steve Neale-1980) so that the interview will be in depth and over both pages of the DPS. This is because it reflects emotions to the reader and allows the reader to look at the image and the content on the page whilst reading the interview. The text I have made white so stands out from the background and made the questions that of the same colour as the highlighted words in the standfirst to contrast to the background and the answers to differentiate what the questions are and what the answers are. However I have chosen to ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale-1980) a quote idea from Kerrang! And have the quote in white and the name of the artist in the blue. 5. 6.
  • 50. Improvements based on publisher feedback Feedback Improvements Before After
  • 51. Conclusion • What went well? • Through the past learning outcomes I have learnt how to use Photoshop properly and how beneficial it is when making my own magazine, I had leant how to use each of the tools successfully and had produced a good, quality and purposeful magazine front cover and DPS. • Another part that went well was that I was able to email Kerrang! And Bauer Media directly and was able to receive responses from them which had helped me through the learning outcomes. • I was able to know and learn in depth all about my magazine of inspiration Kerrang! By being able to know who the publisher is and the circulation of the magazine dependant on the copies, so really was a beneficial start to the learning outcome and to learn all about a music magazine in depth. • Even better if? • These previous learning objectives can be improved by trying to add more detail were possible therefore will make the other learning outcomes much easier to complete. • Another thing which I could improve on is the layout of my work, even though my work is all in the PowerPoint from the learning objectives it can get a bit muddled so spreading it out and less clumped together will make my work more clear and easy to understand. • Finally the last improvement which I could have done was to keep asking Mr Crafts to check my work and make sure it has been completed to a distinction standard so that I can move on to the next learning outcome.
