- 2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Differentiate between bodily arousal, expressive behavior, and
conscious experience when referencing human emotion
• Discuss how different emotions activate different physiological
and brain pattern responses
• Discuss what effect stress has on the human body

How do arousal and expressive behaviors interact in emotion?1:
Humans– and most other animals— appear to be equipped with a set
of predictable responses to situations called emotions:
• emotions: are a mix of bodily arousal (heart
pounding); expressive behaviors (quickened pace),
and conscious experience, including thoughts
(“Will I get hurt?”) and feelings (panic, fear, joy)

- 6. THE PHYSIOLOGY OF EMOTIONS2PART13:EMOTION,STRESS,&HEALTH
Do different emotions activate different physiological and brain-
pattern responses?
2:
There are subtle brain pattern distinctions for
some emotions.
• Although these subtle differences exist
in brain activity, such differences
cannot be easily seen from tracking
heart rate, breathing, and perspiration.

DETECTING EMOTION IN OTHERSPART13:EMOTION,STRESS,&HEALTH
How do we communicate nonverbally?3:
Most humans read nonverbal cues well using their
brain’s emotion-detecting skills; individuals are
especially good at detecting nonverbal threats.
• Experience can sensitize individuals to
particular emotions (e.g. abused
children shown morphed anger/fear
photos).
• Gestures, facial expressions, and voice
tones convey important information.

How does stress make us more vulnerable to disease?4:
PART13:EMOTION,STRESS,&HEALTH
Hypertension and headaches are two forms of psychophysiological
illnesses.
• psychoneuroimmunology: “mind body
illness”
• Your thoughts and feelings (psycho)
influence your brain (neuro), which
influence the endocrine hor-
mones that affect one’s disease-
fighting immune system.
