Effects Of Dbq On African American Community
Throughout our country's history, there have been many minority groups who have fallen victim to
oppression. For the purpose of this assignment, I will compare and contrast the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer (LGBTQQ) community, the disabled community, and
the African American community. Also, listing historically significant events past and present that
have shaped their experiences.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer community also referred to as
LGBTQQ is no stranger to oppression. "In 1600–1800, colonists discovered buggery (sex between
men or between women) among Native Americans. In 1869, Dr. Karoly Benkert coined the term
"homosexuality" to describe same–sex acts. In 1870–1910, homosexuals ... Show more content on

For example, the Civil Rights Movement became a primary inspiration for the disability rights
movement. In 1962, Edward Roberts a student with a significant disability sued to gain admission to
the University of California. "The same year, James Meredith sued to become the first African–
American to attend the University of Mississippi." And, in 1983 "Sharon Kowalski became disabled
due to a drunk driver. After the accident had occurred, her parents learned she was a lesbian. They
put Sharon in a nursing home rather than letting her return home to her partner Karen Thompson.
Thompson's eight–year struggle to free Kowalski became a focus of disability rights advocates and
led to links between the lesbian and disability rights communities."
After sampling several articles, I discovered that these three groups have more in common than I
initially perceived. In 1973 the DSM–II removed homosexuality as a psychological classification, in
1986 the Air Carrier Access Act was passed, and in 2009 Barack Hussein Obama II is elected as the
first Black president of the United States. He's currently serving the last of his second term. Before
the 1960's movements, there wasn't a lot of upward mobility for these three

One's community plays a huge role in their health behaviors. The African–American community
must provide better opportunities and options for the homosexual men within their communities.
Wishfully thinking, there should be a leader from every community that will be in charge of
improving HIV/AIDS within their own neighborhoods/communities. Having someone with a
personal connection to the community is a great asset because they know exactly what is going on
and what will work and what will not. We must educate African–American MSM men, on the
dangers of not getting tested and passing the virus onto others. It is now illegal to have sexual
relations with someone and not mention that they are HIV positive (HIV Disclosure Policy and

African American And Maroonon Communities
Maroon societies are groups shaped by runaway slaves in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the
United States of America. These different societies varied from small communities that lasted a little
less than a year to more prosperous communities holstering thousands of members and existing for
generations and centuries. Maroon communities were places where runaway slaves could find
safety, shelter, food, and support. Running away was a crime back in those days and therefore, if
caught could result in severe punishment, being returned to its owner, or death. The maroons in the
Revolutionary period was from 1775–1783. Enslaved Africans escaped into the American wild to

This was one of the first major steps that African Americans took towards helping each other make a
better life for themselves. These communities however, were not unknown to the public. Many
people knew of them and many Americans were not fond of these treacherous acts that they were
committing. Being a slave was equivalent to being property, leaving your owner was a series crime
and was not handled lightly under the laws of the state and the United States as a whole. Therefore
they had to go through many hardships that threatened the success of their established communities.
These hardships, as aforementioned resulted in severe punishment, being returned to its owner, or
death. Although they knew what the consequences could possibly be, that still did not stop their
drive to seek out a better life for themselves, their families, and generations to come. For me,
learning about these communities has really helped to open up my eyes on some of the tactics that
my ancestors had to use in order to ensure that one day their people would have a better life. This
will always stick with me when I am faced with tough decisions, and are aware that there is a better
plan in store, to always put my best foot forward and no matter the consequence, fight for what I
know is right and what I know I deserve. A maroon community signifies for me the first steps to
demanding freedom. The first steps to ensuring brotherhood and sisterhood by any means necessary.
Most importantly, it shows that nothing is impossible no matter the odds, because although many of
these Africans Americans did not get to live to see the final outcome of their journey, their hard
work did not go

The Asian American Community And Racial Relations
The Asian American Community and Racial Relations
The Asian American community history is filled with countless events of social and racial injustices
against the community that the common public does not recognize.
Today America claims that racial discrimination is becoming less of a problem but to the Asian
American community the situation never changed. As to this day people are facing discrimination in
the form of hate crimes from the rising numbers of white supremacists. In the form of verbal
harassment, physical abuse, threats of deportation, etc. They are also facing issues in the forms of
cultural and social barriers such as culture, language, and overall understanding. It is viewed in
many events throughout the history of Asian American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the events the immense population of Arabic, Pakistani, Bengalese and people from Muslim
majority countries despite their different backgrounds were looked to as potential terrorists (Maira).
According to Maira's, "Youth culture, Citizenship, and Globalization" the youth from these countries
are usually the one that will work and study at the same time but also, the ones that will support
America (Maira). An example is Sohali, an Indian Muslim immigrant, who works and study but
does have relations with the other communities. However, after the events he like many other youths
are being labeled as potential terrorists while also thinking if they are the enemies. On another point
of the attacks effects, it led to racializing citizenship as Leti Volpp states that Muslium or Middle
Eastern groups are now being labeled as terrorists and non–citizens (Maira 345). For all the Arabic,
Muslim, and South Asian that are living in America, after the attack they were forced to live their
lives in fear due to racial and religious profiling of being labeled as a terrorist. As these people are
not only immigrants but rather people who are coming to help support their family back home but
also their hosting country. Which to this day are still being categorized as terrorists due to racial and
religious profiling that goes beyond the conventional model of black and white

Disability In African American Community
Disability in African American Community: Cultural Hardships
Introduction: Dual Minority Much study has shown that individuals with disabilities who also
belong to an ethnic minority or racial group face many extra problems dual minority status.
Experiences are shaped by belonging to a minority group and also by being disabled. Such
experiences are shaped by both cultures of their ethnicity and of the disability culture. Minority
groups face stereotypes, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare, education, proper housing,
and safe environments for their families. Minority persons with disabilities also face issues relating
to accommodation, access, health, social status, employment, stigma, and independence by

looked at with a culture lenses which puts further stress on African American persons with

black community associates social stigma to certain kinds of disabilities. In addition, African
Americans lack social support that could enable access and accommodation when compared with

The Role Of African Americans In The Black Community
I've always been involved in the black community to an extent. I'd voice my opinion on different
topics that involve African Americans at a young age and participate in events and activities in my
community. I'd like to continue participating and supporting these types of events throughout my life
and also expose other young people as well. In NAACP I've become more open minded about
certain issues that African Americans face everyday that have been ignored by elected leaders. As
Vice President of the Lakeland Youth Council, we discuss ways to involve children and teenagers
into our organization by participating in local events. We also attend the NAACP State Conference

Advancement of Civic Engagement by Community Foundations...
The role of civic engagement in neighborhood revitalization, particularly in low income African
American communities, has gained increased awareness and in recent years. Community, nonprofit,
and government leaders now view civic engagement as a critical component of effective solutions as
they seek to address crime, unemployment, low graduation rates and numerous other neighborhood
challenges. Several successful initiatives have come to fruition and provide strong evidence of the
benefits that increased civic engagement provides. Experts commonly define civic engagement as
individual and group actions that collectively address general issues of concern that are public in
nature. Civic engagement takes many forms such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such efforts are by no means new as neighborhood revitalization through the civic engagement of
residents in low income communities has long been a funding priority of the philanthropic
community. The African American community in particular, hard hit by social and economic
challenges, presents many opportunities for the increased civic engagement on the part of residents
to promote changes in approaches and strategies. Community foundations have the resources and
commitment to community revitalization to make significant inroads into solving the problems in
low income communities.
Tester, Ruel, Anderson, Reitzes, and Oakley (2011) describe issues such as urban renewal as directly
responsible for the decline and destruction of low–income African American communities. They
argue that strategies such as relocating residents of public housing and high crime areas for example
are not solutions to the root cause of the problem – lack of support, inadequate resources, and
isolation. Further, relocating residents of these communities does not result in improved quality of
life. In fact, those moved out of one low income community typically migrate to a similar type of
community that is usually only a few miles from where they originally resided. It is at the
community level in everyday activities that citizens can experience the most measurable and
impactful degree of civic engagement.

African Americans And African American Community
As seen through time, African–Americans have been at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing
funds that are available to most people. This however has not stopped them from creating and
accessing help that supports and aids their families. Through communal efforts, African–Americans
have been able to create mutual aid for themselves. In these communities, there are many sectors
that have been built, but the main reason many are "making it" or able to afford and do what they are
currently doing is through the help of the various communities and organizations that came about.
Throughout each decade there have been forms of aid created solely for African Americans. Before
slavery, when African Americans were still in Africa, the communities were thriving economically
and socially. Africa produced a plethora of advanced civilizations. Although Europeans like to credit
themselves for the spread of Christianity, Christianity was in Ethiopia long before the Europeans
came. As one can see through time, church is an important communal and distinctive quality of the
African American community. In his book, West African Religion: A Study of the Beliefs and
Practices of Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Ibo, and Kindred Peoples, Geoffrey Parrinder explains, "Africa had
a history, long before the Europeans came to our shores... Religion is a fundamental, perhaps the
most important, influence in the life of most Africans" (Parrinder 1). African Americans already had

American Community Colleges And The American Association...
The American Community Colleges were established in the twentieth century to address the needs
of the workforce development (The American Association of Community College, 2015). Moreover,
skilled workers were critical to the economic growth and strength of America's society (American
Association of Community College, 2015). Although the community college's mission has not
changed, employment skills have changed. In order to yield tangible economic benefits to the
community, community colleges have to start to think more creatively (Rockefeller Institute of
Government, 2010). For over thirty years, community colleges has been the go–to reference for their
role in economic development and services rendered to the community (American Community
College, 2014). Because of the substantial need for industries to obtain and maintain skilled
workers, the community college system is pursuing strategies to help employers attract the preferred
worker. This is done through education, training, management counseling, and other initiatives
(Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). Consequently, knowledge is power; higher education's
primary role and contribution to economic development remains in its traditional obligation:
creating an educated society. In addition to that, the current economy has caused the conventional
academic mission to be extremely significant (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). The
paradigm shift in the twenty–first century is more knowledge

Disrespect In The African-American Community
Why are African–Americans disrespected? African–Americans have got treated with nothing but
pure disrespect for a very long time and it still continues in today's society. The effects of disrespect
in the African–American community are other races talking down about the positive things we have
accomplished; also we have a long history of being scared not only physically, mentally, but also
emotionally. The most disrespected thing anyone can do is not giving credit to people who truly
deserve it. African–Americans get talked down and talked about for the smallest things. Other races
never have anything nice or positive things to say. Stereotypes have made black people look and
sound less or not at all intelligent. These stereotypes include examples such as living in the projects,
selling crack, and having multiple children by different men. Although, some stereotypes can be

Essay On African American Community
Improving yourself is a great thing you could do, but what if you improved your whole community?
African Americans have been together for numerous centuries, especially in the 19th century. Joined
together, they have created things they never thought they could ever achieve. They improved
themselves through communication, different preaching ways, and believing. African Americans had
started to believe in God as a way of hope for them through the harsh times of slavery. Later, when
they started to gain a higher voice, black leaders took a stand to speak out against slavery. Their
Church is one of the things they could look forward to going to every time they were in a bad state
of mind. They could go there to preach together as a community. The churches made by African
Americans had joined them together to make something more than they ever thought they could
achieve.
In the earlier years, the Churches made by slaves and other Africans grew to be very popular, but
now they don't have such a high voice as they had before. "Today, the black church is in crisis, with
scholars claiming that it has lost its prophetic and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Church, and their people. "Besides nurturing charismatic ministers, most of whom were men, black
churches helped instill cooperative values in nonclerical leaders, emphasizing democracy, equality,
and caring for others" (Taylor). As a community, the church and its people helped inspire
generations of people. Leaders who have made a stance years ago are still remembered today as
powerful motivators. One of these African American men is Martin Luther King Jr. He wrote the "I

The Cultural Identity Of The African American Community
The African American community has sat at the end of a discriminatory lens from the moment they
set foot in the United States. For that reason, black communities have undergone the process of
community building to ensure that all members feel a sense of belonging.
Race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, poverty, and sexual orientation, all play a role in developing
one's identity and more often than not, these multiple identities intersect with blackness. Being that
American society has deemed colored people and populations as minoritarian subjects, African
diaspora people can be seen making safe spaces for themselves to survive as individuals and as a
part of communities.
Stuart Hall's Cultural Identity and Diaspora focuses on the current issues of identity, cultural
practices and cultural representations. He analyses the visual representations of Afro–Caribbean's
and challenges the notions of identity from African and European places. Hall then goes on to
explain how Caribbean cinema has chosen to both, refute and embrace European influence. He
presents two different forms of thinking about cultural identity. In the first position, Hall defines
'cultural identity' in terms of one, shared culture, which people with a shared history and ancestry
hold in common. The first model uses "stable, unchanging and continuous frames of reference and
meanings' to present the idea of shared culture, history, and ancestry rooted beneath 'more
superficial imposed 'selves'" (Hall, 223).

The American Of Western Communities
Western communities were experiencing a large influx of Black Americans for the first time, and
they arrived as part of a vast shift of the general population. Eight million Americans moved west in
1940, half of them to the Pacific coast. There were 171,000 Black Americans in the West in 1940,
but 620,000 by 1945. Between the spring of 1942 and 1945 alone, 340,000 Back Americans settled
in California. The Los Angeles Times is one of the dominant newspapers in the Los Angeles region.
The newspaper was first founded in the late 1980's and by 1914 was run by Norman Chandler.
Historically the Los Angeles Times has been editorially very anti–union, anti–communist and
against the New Deal. In the 1940's the newspaper circulated 226,395 readers. The Daily News was
runner up to the Los Angeles Times; it circulated 221,000 copies in 1940. The Daily News was more
liberal, against big business and endorsed organized labor. Manchester Boddy gained control of the
newspaper; he was a veteran and republican that shifted gears during the Depression, becoming a
Democratic supporter of the New Deal. However, in order for the Daily News to keep its
sponsorships it had to remain neutral on local politics.
The California Eagle began publishing in the 1890's. Charlotta Bass operated it from 1912 to 1951.
Many people in including Black Americans accused the paper and editor of being aligned with the
Communist Party. Bass refuted this by insisting that she had ties with the Republicans. In

The Segregation Of African American Community
Despite nearly one hundred years passing since the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans
in Southern States were still faced with the most distinct forms of racism. The so–called "Jim Crow"
laws that were present in United States at the time, served to segregate blacks and whites from all
aspects of public life, including schools, public transport and juries. Often faced with extreme right–
wing terrorist groups such as the white supremacist Klu Klux Klan, many among the African
American community chose to live in a society of oppression that to actively campaign for equal
rights for all humans regardless of the colour of their skin. It wasn't until the 1950's and 60's that the
people attempted to challenge the established order by engaging in influential protest movements
with the help of key activist groups and their leaders. In particular, one key example of a powerful
protest campaign was that which occurred in 1965 in Selma, a small town in Alabama. Here, the
African American community united in an effort to ensure that all citizens were equal before the law
in regards to their ability to register to vote. Their work in banding together and marching from
Selma to the state capital Montgomery, was vastly important to both the Civil Rights Movement as a
whole, as well as the assurance of the Black vote within the United States. Consequently, this essay
seeks to emphasize just how influential this act of protest was to the movement as a whole, whilst

In many years, the African American community has suffer brutally from institutional racism. As
Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from
their identity. The oppressors disrupted the house family structure as they separated them apart from
each other causing a repeated cycle from always missing a parent figure within their lives. Torture
was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans
that they cannot even love their own skin color. Lack of opportunities such as educationally,

The Black Community And Homophobia In The African American...
People in America who choose to identify as members of L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community have been
chastised and mistreated for years, specifically Black Americans. Thousands of people who identify
as members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual community have
been suppressed of the ability to love freely without being ridiculed. Every human around the world
deserves to be loved, regardless of their sexual orientation. Identifying as a member of the
L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community does not make you abnormal. There is nothing troubling with liking the
same sex, it does not classify you as anything less than a man or woman. Furthermore, society has
created this negative notion about identifying as an L.G.B.T.Q.I.A member, we are all humans, with
emotions. Homosexuality amongst the African American community is prevalent; it has its
detriments and burdens on individuals. The effects of how Blacks are ostracized amongst the Black
community is disheartening and is displayed through homophobia, violence, and acceptance.
As mentioned in the Oxford Dictionary homophobia is defined as, dislike of, or prejudice against
homosexual people. Homophobia is prevalent within the African American community owing to the
fact that, the Black church has stigmatized homosexuality in a negative connotation. Indulging in the
same sex does not perceive you to be anomalous, it is the interest towards the same sex, it should no

Cuban American Communities And South Florida
Cuban American communities in South Florida.
For many Cubans the Batista government was simply a puppet regime with the puppet masters
being wealthy Americans. This was because his economic policies favoured foreign investors and
did little for the development of domestic industries, which resulted in the wealth of the country
being concentrated in the hands of a wealthy whtite minority. Consequently, in the 1950s, this harsh
regime caused political resistance to reach to its boiling point. In response to these high levels of
frustration, Fidel Castro and a small rebel group led a successful revolutionary army into Havana in
1959. This was the first step on the road to a new era in the lives of many Cubans.
Shortly after acquiring power, Castro embarked on a number of changes that relinquished the strong
hold that the United States held in Cuba and with the help of the Soviet Union transformed Cuba
into a communist state. In the following decades, millions Cubans made their way to the United
States and contributed to the growth of Cuban American communities. Since the establishment of
the Cuban government in 1959, there has been four major waves of Cuban migrants to the United

African American Community Psychology Essay
What particularly captivated me towards working in the area of community psychology is the
mental health and societal issues that encompass the African American community. When I was 11
years old, I became a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP). My encounters with this association opened my eyes to matters in which I am still
interested and enthralled by today. These matters incorporate the social, educational, and political
events that African Americans face on a daily basis. I would continuously contemplate why there
were so many social injustices and disparities surrounding Black people and Black communities. As
I became more seasoned, I began to question the stigmatization of mental health within Black
communities, the communal behaviors of Blacks in regards to social issues, and how social issues
affect us personally. I would persistently ask my mentors and advisors, "Why are there so many
discriminations against people of color?" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Voting Discrimination in African American Communities
Discrimination in voting has been a prevalent issue in the African American community. Before the
Voting Rights Act of 1965 poll taxes, literacy tests, and physical intimidation have prevented
African Americans from voting. While this problem is widely recognized as an issue of the past it is
still made possible through racial gerrymandering. This is an important matter because it has
restricted fully entitled American citizens from voting. In 1870 Congress passed the fifteenth
amendment, which gave voting rights to African Americans. Soon after, states began enforcing
expensive poll taxes and extensive literacy tests on African Americans before they could vote. Poll
taxes were first introduced in 1876 with the intention of being enforced upon blacks and whites. The
tax was disproportionately hard on African Americans and especially on freed slaves. The literacy
tests issued to African Americans were exceedingly demanding. These tests were up to twenty pages
long and included questions such as, "Where do presidential electors cast ballots for president?"
"Name the rights a person has after he has been indicted by a grand jury.", according to
freerepublic.com. Literacy tests were impractical with the very little formal education given to
African Americans. On top of that, physical intimidation and violence from the Ku Klux Klan made
it nearly impossible for Blacks to vote. Luckily, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed
discrimination in voting. Today, gerrymandering

The Diversity Of The African American Community
Individuals throughout history have always identified and associated themselves with community
based a variety of attributes such as religious beliefs and ethnicity. Maslow's hierarchy of needs
further supports that being a part of a community is an intrinsic movement that motivates human
behaviour, as people feel emotionally stable when they identify themselves as a part of a
community. Thus, the building associated with communal identity is often dictated by the growth or
decline of the community itself. By examining the evolution of community buildings in relation to
the progression of the African American community in the United States of America, it is evident
that the psychological human needs have influenced the progression of the buildings.
Every community evolves from people alike, whether this is by race, religious beliefs or interests.
The African–American community was an outcome of racial discrimination and bigotry in America.
The enslavement of Africans in America began in 1619 and continued until President Lincoln issued
the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring "that all persons held as slaves... shall be free" in 1865
(Levine, 1996). Although former slaves received the rights of citizenship and the "equal protection
of the Constitution in the 14th Amendment (1866), their freed status remained precarious and
provisions of the Constitution were often ignored or violated. According to Levine and Urofsky, a

Segregation and Effects on African–American Communities
I suppose the majority of society would have the illusion that segregation in the United States died
with the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and Brown v Board of Education of Topeka in 1954. What most
fail to realize is the profound, and devastating effect segregation continues to have on minorities,
particularly the African American communities. Throughout the relative young history of the United
States, the Caucasian race has deemed themselves as smarter than the Afro–American. According to
a scientist by the name of Agassi, "blacks are not created equal", and he claims that they're not fit to
live in the same society as whites. This research essay attempts to inform readers on some major
systemic issues that are prevalent today. Segregation is the reason why there is so much inequality
among black and white communities. Segregation causes inequality for minorities and blacks in
particular, they are deprived of important goods and services that are not offered and distributed
fairly (Anderson). The areas of these communities which are most affected by the deprivation of
goods and services include the real estate market, the blocking of capital through denial of loans and
mortgages, redlining, access to health services, the funding of schools within the community, and
the lack of commercial growth directly leading to unemployment and other social issues. To

Often neglected, African Americans are disproportionately affected by mental illness yet it is

African Americans tend to feel social alienation from the lack of discussion within their
communities; peers and family members debase the importance of seeking professional help for
problems, and this can cause the fear of being perceived as "crazy". Monnica Williams, a
psychologist and associate professor at the University of Connecticut in the Department of
Psychological, discusses the insecurities African Americans face when admitting vulnerabilities and
the "notion, dating back to slavery, that one should endure life's difficulties without complaint or
appearing weak runs deep in African American culture," ("Why African Americans Avoid
Psychotherapy.") When mental illness is taken seriously, generational ideas about mental illness
reflecting badly on the entire community and instilling the idea that it should be hidden and ignored
is still commonplace; in "Therapists Say African Americans Are Increasingly Seeking Help for
Mental Illness" African Americans are taught to keep personal information that could be seen as
negative private and told, "Don't put your business in the street. Don't put your family's issues out in
front of strangers." (Bahrampour). The idea of bringing shame to not only oneself, but one's entire
family, is a legitimate concern, and "talking about problems with an outsider (i.e., therapist) may be
viewed as airing one's 'dirty laundry,'" ("Why African Americans Avoid Psychotherapy.") When it
mental illness is not taken seriously, it can cause even more damage to those suffering from it
because others believe it is insignificant; some African Americans feel that "a lot of college students
get downplayed... about the struggles they have in life. You tell your parents this and a lot of parents
downplay it like it's nothing." (CindyrellaOG, "REAL TALK | Black Boys Don't Cry | Mental

Colorism In African American Community
Colorism has been a major issue in the African American community; colorism is prejudice and
discriminative against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically amongst people of the same ethnic
or racial group. Colorism doesn't only affect African Americans,it affects people all over the
world. How a concept so primitive became acceptable by so many? Specifically for african
americans the answer is slavery and the influence of the media. In 1444 Europeans began to kidnap
Africans of all social statuses and began to trade them on the west coast of Africa known at the
transatlantic slave trade, which had an impact on the african american community that is still evident
today.Colorism has been drilled into the psyche of african americans since ... Show more content on

African American Communities Case Study
Environmental disasters are often pushed into regions with a higher rate of marginalized groups;
relating to class, gender, and race. The dangerous environmental issues that these groups face hinder
their process in the fight for equality, oppressing them and hurting the environment even more.
Areas with a higher black population are forced into poverty for various reasons that African
American communities with environmental problems are forced into poverty and forced into having
more health problems as a result. The town of Convent, Louisiana had an 83.7% African American
population, with a rate of 2,277 lbs. of air pollution produced per person annually, compared to the

The chemical plants were being placed in Convent because they already had a high rate of
pollution– the general consensus between the corporations and the government being that it makes
more sense to put them into a town that already has astronomical rates of pollution than putting
them in one that doesn't have issues with it. Convent was known for being a town that had a rate of
higher poverty (CITE SOME SHIT), which made it easier to build the chemical plants there. Media
and general public tend to care less about health and environmental issues when a town lives in
poverty, so it was harder for the townsfolk to gain awareness for the corporations they were fighting
against. This is still evident in places such as Flint, Michigan, where the residents are being forced
to drink water that has highly elevated levels of iron and lead. Media attention was high for a while,
but soon Flint faded out of the spotlight, being left with lead and iron poisoned water. In the city of
Flint, 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, and has a majority black population.

Racism: An Example Of The African-American Community
A community is a commonplace between several individuals, where they can receive comfort,
safety, and communication. Most of the times these people aim towards a goal in which they believe
that with its achievement, the world can become a better place. I am apart of the African–American
community and my goal is the equality between all races.
Now believe it or not, but I didn't always believe in racism. An instance of this is revealed in an
argument I had with a fellow classmate of mine, just last year. We were discussing the motive
behind a police officer who shot and killed an innocent man, after he requested that the victim hand
over his identification. The friend automatically blamed racism, pointing out the racial differences

The Effects Of Homosexuality In The African American...
Humans in America who choose to identity as members of L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community have been
chastised and mistreated for years, specifically Black Americans.
There is nothing wrong with liking the
same sex, it does not classify you as anything less than a man or woman.
As mentioned in the Oxford Dictionary homophobia is defined as, dislike of or prejudice against
homosexual people. Homophobia is prevalent within the African American community owing to the
fact that, the Black church has stigmatized homosexuality in a negative connotation. Indulging in the
same sex does not perceive you to be anomalous, it is the interest towards the same sex, it should no
longer be a topic of discussion. The Advocate journalist

Essay On African American Community
As an young African American in Seattle, Naturally I grew up in the African American Community,
specifically in the Central District ( C.D). That Includes the very coveted territory of Capital Hill.
Growing the C.D area was not what it is today, in fact it was very far from it. Even though there
was, and is still violence, it was a community, and an up lifting on at that. Everyone would hang out
at the community center, and for the most part everyone new everyone. At a young age I learned the
meaning of community and family. Family is not always blood, and blood is not always thicker than

which it wasn't. they had every right to be upset, the community was not being treated as other
communities in Seattle. Seattle loves a good cause, weather it's, Black Lives Matter, Environmental
issues, or LGBTQ. But Seattle can be notorious for putting aside other major problems for the next
big thing. Even though this is not the biggest problem, it still concerns the community. That they are
not being treated as equal. The city of Seattle is allowing that the cross roads can be painted. So they

The African American Community: A Case Study
Living at a low socioeconomic level On a daily basis the African American community is met with
constant racism and discriminatory stressors that are unavoidable in most cases. Behavioral factors,
socioeconomic status, and psychological stress all have a damaging effect on individuals both
physically and mentally taking a huge toll on each person's health (LaVeist & Isaac, 2013). Elements
such as one's socioeconomic status, a reality often witnessed in communities where blacks are the
majority, causes anxiety for many as these neighborhoods are not the safest to live in. Due in large
part to gang violence, robbery, home invasions, car thefts, and verbal misunderstandings that can
potentially lead to murders, many people are faced with the burden of keeping themselves and their
families safe by limiting their time spent outdoors (LaVeist & Isaac, 2013).

This sole fact makes applying to jobs and attending job interviews stressful further leading to
anxiety and panic attacks. When individuals who are well qualified for the position get turned down,
they are faced with the pressures of meeting basic survival needs such as being able to afford
healthy food and adequate housing (LaVeist & Isaac, 2013). For students, they are met teachers who
continuously put them down mentally and find ways to prohibit their educational success. Instances
such as these also contribute to mental health problems. While there are many details behind why
African American individuals have a higher complicated health risk, it is no secret that survival in
these communities in addition to surviving as a black individual is like playing a game of

African American Community
The Community is defined based on individual perception. It is often described as societal structure
which recognized individuals or groups of people living together; people in a particular
environment. However, it also reflects groups of people who share a common interest;
neighborhoods, housing are communities within a large physical environment. The sub communities
that makes up the larger environment composed of race, culture, ethnicity, professional ties, and
interest. For example, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, the medical
community, the Haitian community, and the elderly community. The HIV/AIDS patients are
considered a community too. The African American community presumed HIV/AIDS exist only
among Gay white males and treatment is specific to this population. This concept changed when the
rates of HIV/AIDS infections arbitrarily increased among low income African Americans (i.e. those
with different social experience, the gay, the bi–sexual men, the unemployed and the poor families).

United States is the highest fundraiser for HIV/AIDS globally, but the U.S is facing a major ongoing

Analysis Of The American Community Survey
Abstract
This multiple regression project relies on secondary data collected by the American Community
Survey (ACS). The data reflects police killings that have occurred in the United States in the year
2015. From this research, I'm seeking to claim that the response variable of personal income is
influenced by seven explanatory variables; college education, population, unemployment rate,
poverty rate and race (share_white, share_black and share_hispanic). In this study, the data analysis
has showed a statistical significance on personal income affected by poverty rate and college
education of the police victims. The analysis shows population, unemployment rate and race as
inconclusive.

Analysis
The initial step in fitting a multiple regression model is to establish whether the explanatory
variables correlate with the response variable in a linear fashion. The way I checked for a linear
relationship between the variables was through various scatterplots that we learned to formulate
through class–lab work. Each data point is plotted on the scatterplot and all together will show either
a linear relationship or not. Within the multiple regression model represented below, personal
income is set as response factor with other seven variables as explanatory factors.
From the scatterplots above we can see there is a moderate to weak linear relationship between the
response factor and the independent variables. Because of this result, the model indicates that the
data is unbiased and consistent in nature. The strongest of the scatterplots seem to be personal
income vs unemployment rate and personal income vs college. But even then, the linear relationship
is fairly weak. Because of the linear relationship, I continued to check correlations.
I represented the variables in terms of a correlation matrix to learn more about the relationship
between response and explanatory variables. We know through class labs and lectures that the
correlation relationship is high if the correlation reflects close to 1. Closer to 0 provides no
information while closer to negative 1 provides significant

The success of a community depends on people's willingness to limit their personal rights. People
are unwilling to do so because it restricts them of their own personal liberties. Even though they
value their liberties it is affecting the success of the community. The effectiveness of the community
depends on each individual and their personal sacrifices for the community. In 1963 civil rights
activist Martin Luther King was sent to jail for protesting the rights of African Americans. He
sacrificed his rights in order to fight for the laws that were unjust during that time period. He didn't
believe that any African American should be treated unequally because of the color of his skin.

The African-American Community
One of the main issues that America has continued to ignore is the problems within the African –
American community. Many children within the African– American community fail to get the
necessary leadership from their respective parents. That lack of leadership generally occurs from the
absence pf a father figure in the household. Reason may be because of a father being imprisoned for
whatever reason, or the father being killed by law enforcement illegally. Thus, the more
impressionable minds within the community commit illegal activities to get recognition from their
peers. Indeed, these people should be punished for their acts by law enforcement. What the African–

Self– accountability consists of someone being willing to own responsibly or to account for their
actions in a responsible manner. Rather than owning up to the wrongdoing committed it is common
for those in the African– American community to give up and only rely on drug abuse to get from
day–to day. The rate of recurrent alcoholism among African – Americans is 35.4 percent, versus 33
percent among Hispanics and 22.8 percent among whites. (Sunrise House, Winter). A lot alike
alcohol when the African American user uses other drugs like, cocaine, crack, marijuana, and other
drugs they are also more likely to get addicted to that as well. As stated by, Gil Scott Heron, "The
revolution will not go better with coke. The revolution will not fight the germs that may cause bad
breath. The revolution will put you in the driver's seat" (The Revolution Will). The artist clearly is
informing the listener of the song to clearly not become a statistic by also intaking drugs, instead be

The Poverty Of The African American Community
"All Men are created equal" a quote from the United States Constitution. Freedom is what the
United States stands for it is what it was rooted from. However, we are into the 21st century and the
idea that the United States still discriminates against a certain race is taboo to many. Everyone likes
to walk around thinking that everything is alright and equal. Sadly this is not true. The African
American, especially those found in the urban setting of Chicago is at a disadvantage. This is due to
the erosion of the public education system along with fractured families along with other
socioeconomic factors which have contributed to the cycles of poverty and ultimately creates a
disadvantaged for African Americans in Chicago. For this research paper I'm going to focus on
Chicago for its strong roots in the African American Community, but this isn't just a one city
problem the disadvantages to African Americans are spread out throughout the entire country in
every major city in every state and there is no hiding from it.
From 1916 to 1970 there was an event–taking place across the country. This event called the great
migration brought millions of African Americans north running from the segregation and racism in
the south. Many laws such as the Jim Crowe laws gave African American a huge struggle to find
peace in the south even in the early 20th century. Even though slavery was outlawed in all of the

Community Based Communication In Native American Community
All in all, Native American communities are currently discovering ways in which they can help heal
their own people through holistic ways. One being The Relational model, which acknowledges and
incorporates context, mind, body and spirit. In the CRIHB film, it gives an example of how this is
practiced in a Native American Community. They speak about taking a "representational approach"
by having traditional healers, elders or anyone who can offer assistance in a positive way for the
individual and community. "In the linear model, we are taught to treat the person, and in the
relational model, we are taught to treat the balance"(Cross,2017). The video also mentions multi
tribal healers, experts who travel from one tribal community to another and assist in a healing
practices. One major thing the video continues to mention, and what Terry Cross mentions in her
article, is that "healing is important, but more importantly on a Community level"(Cross, 2017). As I
continue to learn more about the importance of community based relationships, I realize how
individualist the dominant society is, compared to Native communities. Now that the history and
generational trauma is being closely evaluated in Native communities, there has been a shift in the
way in which tribal members are healing their people. The old way of healing, which many call the
western way, has not worked for their people or the communities as a whole. Rose Domnick, the
director of the Behavioral Health

Effects Of Dbq On African American Community

  • 1. Effects Of Dbq On African American Community Throughout our country's history, there have been many minority groups who have fallen victim to oppression. For the purpose of this assignment, I will compare and contrast the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer (LGBTQQ) community, the disabled community, and the African American community. Also, listing historically significant events past and present that have shaped their experiences. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer community also referred to as LGBTQQ is no stranger to oppression. "In 1600–1800, colonists discovered buggery (sex between men or between women) among Native Americans. In 1869, Dr. Karoly Benkert coined the term "homosexuality" to describe same–sex acts. In 1870–1910, homosexuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the Civil Rights Movement became a primary inspiration for the disability rights movement. In 1962, Edward Roberts a student with a significant disability sued to gain admission to the University of California. "The same year, James Meredith sued to become the first African– American to attend the University of Mississippi." And, in 1983 "Sharon Kowalski became disabled due to a drunk driver. After the accident had occurred, her parents learned she was a lesbian. They put Sharon in a nursing home rather than letting her return home to her partner Karen Thompson. Thompson's eight–year struggle to free Kowalski became a focus of disability rights advocates and led to links between the lesbian and disability rights communities." After sampling several articles, I discovered that these three groups have more in common than I initially perceived. In 1973 the DSM–II removed homosexuality as a psychological classification, in 1986 the Air Carrier Access Act was passed, and in 2009 Barack Hussein Obama II is elected as the first Black president of the United States. He's currently serving the last of his second term. Before the 1960's movements, there wasn't a lot of upward mobility for these three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The African-American Community One's community plays a huge role in their health behaviors. The African–American community must provide better opportunities and options for the homosexual men within their communities. Wishfully thinking, there should be a leader from every community that will be in charge of improving HIV/AIDS within their own neighborhoods/communities. Having someone with a personal connection to the community is a great asset because they know exactly what is going on and what will work and what will not. We must educate African–American MSM men, on the dangers of not getting tested and passing the virus onto others. It is now illegal to have sexual relations with someone and not mention that they are HIV positive (HIV Disclosure Policy and Procedures, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. African American And Maroonon Communities Maroon societies are groups shaped by runaway slaves in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States of America. These different societies varied from small communities that lasted a little less than a year to more prosperous communities holstering thousands of members and existing for generations and centuries. Maroon communities were places where runaway slaves could find safety, shelter, food, and support. Running away was a crime back in those days and therefore, if caught could result in severe punishment, being returned to its owner, or death. The maroons in the Revolutionary period was from 1775–1783. Enslaved Africans escaped into the American wild to outline their own distinctive gatherings – a New World modification of an African ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was one of the first major steps that African Americans took towards helping each other make a better life for themselves. These communities however, were not unknown to the public. Many people knew of them and many Americans were not fond of these treacherous acts that they were committing. Being a slave was equivalent to being property, leaving your owner was a series crime and was not handled lightly under the laws of the state and the United States as a whole. Therefore they had to go through many hardships that threatened the success of their established communities. These hardships, as aforementioned resulted in severe punishment, being returned to its owner, or death. Although they knew what the consequences could possibly be, that still did not stop their drive to seek out a better life for themselves, their families, and generations to come. For me, learning about these communities has really helped to open up my eyes on some of the tactics that my ancestors had to use in order to ensure that one day their people would have a better life. This will always stick with me when I am faced with tough decisions, and are aware that there is a better plan in store, to always put my best foot forward and no matter the consequence, fight for what I know is right and what I know I deserve. A maroon community signifies for me the first steps to demanding freedom. The first steps to ensuring brotherhood and sisterhood by any means necessary. Most importantly, it shows that nothing is impossible no matter the odds, because although many of these Africans Americans did not get to live to see the final outcome of their journey, their hard work did not go ... • 4. The Asian American Community And Racial Relations The Asian American Community and Racial Relations The Asian American community history is filled with countless events of social and racial injustices against the community that the common public does not recognize. Today America claims that racial discrimination is becoming less of a problem but to the Asian American community the situation never changed. As to this day people are facing discrimination in the form of hate crimes from the rising numbers of white supremacists. In the form of verbal harassment, physical abuse, threats of deportation, etc. They are also facing issues in the forms of cultural and social barriers such as culture, language, and overall understanding. It is viewed in many events throughout the history of Asian American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the events the immense population of Arabic, Pakistani, Bengalese and people from Muslim majority countries despite their different backgrounds were looked to as potential terrorists (Maira). According to Maira's, "Youth culture, Citizenship, and Globalization" the youth from these countries are usually the one that will work and study at the same time but also, the ones that will support America (Maira). An example is Sohali, an Indian Muslim immigrant, who works and study but does have relations with the other communities. However, after the events he like many other youths are being labeled as potential terrorists while also thinking if they are the enemies. On another point of the attacks effects, it led to racializing citizenship as Leti Volpp states that Muslium or Middle Eastern groups are now being labeled as terrorists and non–citizens (Maira 345). For all the Arabic, Muslim, and South Asian that are living in America, after the attack they were forced to live their lives in fear due to racial and religious profiling of being labeled as a terrorist. I'd voice my opinion on different topics that involve African Americans at a young age and participate in events and activities in my community. I'd like to continue participating and supporting these types of events throughout my life and also expose other young people as well. In NAACP I've become more open minded about certain issues that African Americans face everyday that have been ignored by elected leaders. • 7. Advancement of Civic Engagement by Community Foundations... The role of civic engagement in neighborhood revitalization, particularly in low income African American communities, has gained increased awareness and in recent years. Community, nonprofit, and government leaders now view civic engagement as a critical component of effective solutions as they seek to address crime, unemployment, low graduation rates and numerous other neighborhood challenges. Several successful initiatives have come to fruition and provide strong evidence of the benefits that increased civic engagement provides. Experts commonly define civic engagement as individual and group actions that collectively address general issues of concern that are public in nature. Civic engagement takes many forms such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Such efforts are by no means new as neighborhood revitalization through the civic engagement of residents in low income communities has long been a funding priority of the philanthropic community. The African American community in particular, hard hit by social and economic challenges, presents many opportunities for the increased civic engagement on the part of residents to promote changes in approaches and strategies. Community foundations have the resources and commitment to community revitalization to make significant inroads into solving the problems in low income communities. Tester, Ruel, Anderson, Reitzes, and Oakley (2011) describe issues such as urban renewal as directly responsible for the decline and destruction of low–income African American communities. They argue that strategies such as relocating residents of public housing and high crime areas for example are not solutions to the root cause of the problem – lack of support, inadequate resources, and isolation. Further, relocating residents of these communities does not result in improved quality of life. In fact, those moved out of one low income community typically migrate to a similar type of community that is usually only a few miles from where they originally resided. It is at the community level in everyday activities that citizens can experience the most measurable and impactful degree of civic engagement. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. African Americans And African American Community As seen through time, African–Americans have been at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing funds that are available to most people. This however has not stopped them from creating and accessing help that supports and aids their families. Through communal efforts, African–Americans have been able to create mutual aid for themselves. In these communities, there are many sectors that have been built, but the main reason many are "making it" or able to afford and do what they are currently doing is through the help of the various communities and organizations that came about. Throughout each decade there have been forms of aid created solely for African Americans. Before slavery, when African Americans were still in Africa, the communities were thriving economically and socially. Africa produced a plethora of advanced civilizations. Although Europeans like to credit themselves for the spread of Christianity, Christianity was in Ethiopia long before the Europeans came. As one can see through time, church is an important communal and distinctive quality of the African American community. In his book, West African Religion: A Study of the Beliefs and Practices of Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Ibo, and Kindred Peoples, Geoffrey Parrinder explains, "Africa had a history, long before the Europeans came to our shores... Religion is a fundamental, perhaps the most important, influence in the life of most Africans" (Parrinder 1). African Americans already had the support system of a church ... • 9. American Community Colleges And The American Association... The American Community Colleges were established in the twentieth century to address the needs of the workforce development (The American Association of Community College, 2015). Moreover, skilled workers were critical to the economic growth and strength of America's society (American Association of Community College, 2015). Although the community college's mission has not changed, employment skills have changed. In order to yield tangible economic benefits to the community, community colleges have to start to think more creatively (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). For over thirty years, community colleges has been the go–to reference for their role in economic development and services rendered to the community (American Community College, 2014). Because of the substantial need for industries to obtain and maintain skilled workers, the community college system is pursuing strategies to help employers attract the preferred worker. This is done through education, training, management counseling, and other initiatives (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). Consequently, knowledge is power; higher education's primary role and contribution to economic development remains in its traditional obligation: creating an educated society. In addition to that, the current economy has caused the conventional academic mission to be extremely significant (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). • 10. Disrespect In The African-American Community Why are African–Americans disrespected? African–Americans have got treated with nothing but pure disrespect for a very long time and it still continues in today's society. The effects of disrespect in the African–American community are other races talking down about the positive things we have accomplished; also we have a long history of being scared not only physically, mentally, but also emotionally. The most disrespected thing anyone can do is not giving credit to people who truly deserve it. African–Americans get talked down and talked about for the smallest things. Other races never have anything nice or positive things to say. Stereotypes have made black people look and sound less or not at all intelligent. • 11. Essay On African American Community Improving yourself is a great thing you could do, but what if you improved your whole community? African Americans have been together for numerous centuries, especially in the 19th century. Joined together, they have created things they never thought they could ever achieve. They improved themselves through communication, different preaching ways, and believing. African Americans had started to believe in God as a way of hope for them through the harsh times of slavery. Later, when they started to gain a higher voice, black leaders took a stand to speak out against slavery. Their Church is one of the things they could look forward to going to every time they were in a bad state of mind. They could go there to preach together as a community. The churches made by African Americans had joined them together to make something more than they ever thought they could achieve. In the earlier years, the Churches made by slaves and other Africans grew to be very popular, but now they don't have such a high voice as they had before. • 12. The Cultural Identity Of The African American Community The African American community has sat at the end of a discriminatory lens from the moment they set foot in the United States. For that reason, black communities have undergone the process of community building to ensure that all members feel a sense of belonging. Race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, poverty, and sexual orientation, all play a role in developing one's identity and more often than not, these multiple identities intersect with blackness. Being that American society has deemed colored people and populations as minoritarian subjects, African diaspora people can be seen making safe spaces for themselves to survive as individuals and as a part of communities. Stuart Hall's Cultural Identity and Diaspora focuses on the current issues of identity, cultural practices and cultural representations. He analyses the visual representations of Afro–Caribbean's and challenges the notions of identity from African and European places. Hall then goes on to explain how Caribbean cinema has chosen to both, refute and embrace European influence. He presents two different forms of thinking about cultural identity. In the first position, Hall defines 'cultural identity' in terms of one, shared culture, which people with a shared history and ancestry hold in common. The first model uses "stable, unchanging and continuous frames of reference and meanings' to present the idea of shared culture, history, and ancestry rooted beneath 'more superficial imposed 'selves'" (Hall, 223). ... • 13. The American Of Western Communities Western communities were experiencing a large influx of Black Americans for the first time, and they arrived as part of a vast shift of the general population. Eight million Americans moved west in 1940, half of them to the Pacific coast. There were 171,000 Black Americans in the West in 1940, but 620,000 by 1945. Between the spring of 1942 and 1945 alone, 340,000 Back Americans settled in California. The Los Angeles Times is one of the dominant newspapers in the Los Angeles region. The newspaper was first founded in the late 1980's and by 1914 was run by Norman Chandler. Historically the Los Angeles Times has been editorially very anti–union, anti–communist and against the New Deal. In the 1940's the newspaper circulated 226,395 readers. The Daily News was runner up to the Los Angeles Times; it circulated 221,000 copies in 1940. The Daily News was more liberal, against big business and endorsed organized labor. Manchester Boddy gained control of the newspaper; he was a veteran and republican that shifted gears during the Depression, becoming a Democratic supporter of the New Deal. However, in order for the Daily News to keep its sponsorships it had to remain neutral on local politics. The California Eagle began publishing in the 1890's. Charlotta Bass operated it from 1912 to 1951. Many people in including Black Americans accused the paper and editor of being aligned with the Communist Party. • 14. The Segregation Of African American Community Despite nearly one hundred years passing since the Emancipation Proclamation, African Americans in Southern States were still faced with the most distinct forms of racism. The so–called "Jim Crow" laws that were present in United States at the time, served to segregate blacks and whites from all aspects of public life, including schools, public transport and juries. Often faced with extreme right– wing terrorist groups such as the white supremacist Klu Klux Klan, many among the African American community chose to live in a society of oppression that to actively campaign for equal rights for all humans regardless of the colour of their skin. It wasn't until the 1950's and 60's that the people attempted to challenge the established order by engaging in influential protest movements with the help of key activist groups and their leaders. In particular, one key example of a powerful protest campaign was that which occurred in 1965 in Selma, a small town in Alabama. Here, the African American community united in an effort to ensure that all citizens were equal before the law in regards to their ability to register to vote. Their work in banding together and marching from Selma to the state capital Montgomery, was vastly important to both the Civil Rights Movement as a whole, as well as the assurance of the Black vote within the United States. As Blacks were forced into becoming chattel property for Whites, they were also dehumanized from their identity. The oppressors disrupted the house family structure as they separated them apart from each other causing a repeated cycle from always missing a parent figure within their lives. Torture was also included in oppressing blacks as they planted fear into the mindset of African Americans that they cannot even love their own skin color. • 16. The Black Community And Homophobia In The African American... People in America who choose to identify as members of L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community have been chastised and mistreated for years, specifically Black Americans. Thousands of people who identify as members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual community have been suppressed of the ability to love freely without being ridiculed. Every human around the world deserves to be loved, regardless of their sexual orientation. Identifying as a member of the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A community does not make you abnormal. There is nothing troubling with liking the same sex, it does not classify you as anything less than a man or woman. Furthermore, society has created this negative notion about identifying as an L.G.B.T.Q.I.A member, we are all humans, with emotions. Homosexuality amongst the African American community is prevalent; it has its detriments and burdens on individuals. • 17. Cuban American Communities And South Florida Cuban American communities in South Florida. For many Cubans the Batista government was simply a puppet regime with the puppet masters being wealthy Americans. This was because his economic policies favoured foreign investors and did little for the development of domestic industries, which resulted in the wealth of the country being concentrated in the hands of a wealthy whtite minority. Consequently, in the 1950s, this harsh regime caused political resistance to reach to its boiling point. In response to these high levels of frustration, Fidel Castro and a small rebel group led a successful revolutionary army into Havana in 1959. This was the first step on the road to a new era in the lives of many Cubans. Shortly after acquiring power, Castro embarked on a number of changes that relinquished the strong hold that the United States held in Cuba and with the help of the Soviet Union transformed Cuba into a communist state. In the following decades, millions Cubans made their way to the United States and contributed to the growth of Cuban American communities. Since the establishment of the Cuban government in 1959, there has been four major waves of Cuban migrants to the United States. The development of Cuban American communities followed a distinct growth pattern that continued in the 20th century. • 18. African American Community Psychology Essay What particularly captivated me towards working in the area of community psychology is the mental health and societal issues that encompass the African American community. When I was 11 years old, I became a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). My encounters with this association opened my eyes to matters in which I am still interested and enthralled by today. These matters incorporate the social, educational, and political events that African Americans face on a daily basis. I would continuously contemplate why there were so many social injustices and disparities surrounding Black people and Black communities. As I became more seasoned, I began to question the stigmatization of mental health within Black communities, the communal behaviors of Blacks in regards to social issues, and how social issues affect us personally. I would persistently ask my mentors and advisors, "Why are there so many discriminations against people of color?" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 19. Voting Discrimination in African American Communities Discrimination in voting has been a prevalent issue in the African American community. Before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 poll taxes, literacy tests, and physical intimidation have prevented African Americans from voting. While this problem is widely recognized as an issue of the past it is still made possible through racial gerrymandering. This is an important matter because it has restricted fully entitled American citizens from voting. In 1870 Congress passed the fifteenth amendment, which gave voting rights to African Americans. Soon after, states began enforcing expensive poll taxes and extensive literacy tests on African Americans before they could vote. Poll taxes were first introduced in 1876 with the intention of being enforced upon blacks and whites. The tax was disproportionately hard on African Americans and especially on freed slaves. The literacy tests issued to African Americans were exceedingly demanding. These tests were up to twenty pages long and included questions such as, "Where do presidential electors cast ballots for president?" "Name the rights a person has after he has been indicted by a grand jury.", according to freerepublic.com. Literacy tests were impractical with the very little formal education given to African Americans. On top of that, physical intimidation and violence from the Ku Klux Klan made it nearly impossible for Blacks to vote. Luckily, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed discrimination in voting. • 20. The Diversity Of The African American Community Individuals throughout history have always identified and associated themselves with community based a variety of attributes such as religious beliefs and ethnicity. Maslow's hierarchy of needs further supports that being a part of a community is an intrinsic movement that motivates human behaviour, as people feel emotionally stable when they identify themselves as a part of a community. Thus, the building associated with communal identity is often dictated by the growth or decline of the community itself. By examining the evolution of community buildings in relation to the progression of the African American community in the United States of America, it is evident that the psychological human needs have influenced the progression of the buildings. Every community evolves from people alike, whether this is by race, religious beliefs or interests. The African–American community was an outcome of racial discrimination and bigotry in America. The enslavement of Africans in America began in 1619 and continued until President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring "that all persons held as slaves... shall be free" in 1865 (Levine, 1996). Although former slaves received the rights of citizenship and the "equal protection of the Constitution in the 14th Amendment (1866), their freed status remained precarious and provisions of the Constitution were often ignored or violated. What most fail to realize is the profound, and devastating effect segregation continues to have on minorities, particularly the African American communities. Throughout the relative young history of the United States, the Caucasian race has deemed themselves as smarter than the Afro–American. According to a scientist by the name of Agassi, "blacks are not created equal", and he claims that they're not fit to live in the same society as whites. Segregation causes inequality for minorities and blacks in particular, they are deprived of important goods and services that are not offered and distributed fairly (Anderson). The areas of these communities which are most affected by the deprivation of goods and services include the real estate market, the blocking of capital through denial of loans and mortgages, redlining, access to health services, the funding of schools within the community, and the lack of commercial growth directly leading to unemployment and other social issues. When mental illness is taken seriously, generational ideas about mental illness reflecting badly on the entire community and instilling the idea that it should be hidden and ignored is still commonplace; in "Therapists Say African Americans Are Increasingly Seeking Help for Mental Illness" African Americans are taught to keep personal information that could be seen as negative private and told, "Don't put your business in the street. Analysis The initial step in fitting a multiple regression model is to establish whether the explanatory variables correlate with the response variable in a linear fashion. The way I checked for a linear relationship between the variables was through various scatterplots that we learned to formulate through class–lab work. Each data point is plotted on the scatterplot and all together will show either a linear relationship or not. Within the multiple regression model represented below, personal income is set as response factor with other seven variables as explanatory factors. From the scatterplots above we can see there is a moderate to weak linear relationship between the response factor and the independent variables. Because of this result, the model indicates that the data is unbiased and consistent in nature. The strongest of the scatterplots seem to be personal income vs unemployment rate and personal income vs college. But even then, the linear relationship is fairly weak. Because of the linear relationship, I continued to check correlations. I represented the variables in terms of a correlation matrix to learn more about the relationship between response and explanatory variables.
