Analysis Of Appetites By Natasha Saje
Natasha Saje wrote a piece called "Appetites" in which it highlights obesity and from where it stems
from. In the poem the author's mother states "Dien Zug kennt keinen Bahnof" (Saje, 1). The
statement from the mother translates to "your train knows no stations" from German to English. This
is referring to the authors eating habits and how she would eat whatever she pleased. She was the
train that was unwilling to stop at a station relating to how she would not stop eating. However, Saje
did not mention that her mother did not try and stop her from eating so much and stopping that
habit. This illustrates one of the causes of obesity plaguing the United States today. One of the
causes for obesity stems from an inability to control eating

Anatomy Of Anorexia By Steven Levenkron
The book I chose for the critical book review is, "Anatomy of Anorexia" by Steven Levenkron. This
book concentrates on the importance of detecting early symptoms of anorexia nervosa. This book is
suitable for parents and friends of anorexia sufferers or others who would like to inform them of this
disorder. He states that it typically has to do with teenaged girls and how people who experience this
mental illness need serious help. This mental illness can even cause death, if not treated on time. It
mentions how girls who are obsessed over their weight and size try to lose even more weight by
doing extreme workout programs and severely restrict calories. He explains ways to detect someone
with the beginnings of anorexia. He mentions how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This analogy seems to really work for S. Levenkron. He is very proud of his record. He has taken on
nearly 300 patients, of whom 90% have recovered sufficiently from this illness and only one of his
patience took her life. However, parents should be quite thankful to have been notified by an expert
like Steven Levenkron who knows the development of the disease and how to find a stop to it.
"When small children develop a sense of trust, and later a sense of intimacy or closeness to another,
and a sense of self or identity, they are not vulnerable to becoming "creatures of the culture" in its
most extreme form as exemplified by the media: magazines, movies, and so on. But individuals who
are seduced by popular trends allow these trends to define much of their identity" (20). In this quote
it mentions how children at a young age develops trust in their surroundings and closeness to others.
In the process, they begin looking for their own identity. Therefore, they wouldn't become
defenseless to be like people in the media. They wouldn't get sucked into wanting to be the same,
and try to be different. "Some of these traits, such as perfectionist behavior, may disguise
themselves as gifts to parents. They may see the child as independent, not needing much support in a
family overburdened by other problems. A successful child who often does well in school and is
socially outgoing, does not appear worrisome" (21). In this

Anorexia nervosa, a medical condition defined by an...
Anorexia nervosa, a medical condition defined by an abnormal or pronounced lack of appetite, has
become a household recognized condition due to its prevalence and impact. Anorexia nervosa is a
major eating disorder that disrupts everyday life, resulting in extreme thinness, hormonal
imbalances, behavioral signs, and health issues that can lead to death. While the disease strikes
across all gender, races, and classes, the victims affected are typically young, healthy, and attractive
women of successful families. The average girl affected usually ages between thirteen and nineteen
years old (Landau 3). This disorder has increased rapidly over the last ten years, becoming more
common each year (Landau 2–3). Women faced with both a biological ... Show more content on

As the anorectic victim continues to get worse and not eat, the disease becomes much more serious
with more prominent health risks arising, and such long–term risks of heart problems, osteoporosis,
amenorrhea, and death. Furthermore, anorexia nervosa has many internal health issues. One of the
largest treatment hospitals in the UK, Maudsley Hospital shares how people with anorexia have
variations in genes for serotonin receptors, which determines appetite(South London and Maudsley).
Serotonin is described to be involved in everyday behaviors of sleep, hunger, response, behavior,
depression, and anxiety (Website on Eating Disorder). High levels of serotonin and loss of appetite
are linked with constant stress and anxiety. If too much serotonin is being distributed to the body,
this will have a large effect on how much the person eats and feels hungry. Therefore, this
misdistribution in serotonin leads to eating disorders because the body is not correctly balanced.
Many scientists and doctors have studied the correlation between depression and eating disorders.
When physicians test and examine young teenagers who are believed to be anorexic, amenorrhea is
the most common symptom. Amenorrhea is the lack of a menstrual cycle and occurs because the
body is not at the ideal body weight for the given height and age (Gross and Gidwani 41). The

Diet Plan For Weight Reduction
These days everybody is pretty much obsessed with weight reduction. Irrespective of their body
nutrition and health, all people are interested is in weight reduction. There have been plenty of
obesity problems going around too. Many end up having uneven diets which do not benefit the
health many times. People think of reducing their food intake as an easy way to weight reduction.
Eating less does not benefit, but calculating the perfect nutrients and calories does. There certain
ways of having diets. Lately the trend in diet plans has been following the distribution of meals into
4 to 6 times a day. Some say it's a god thing to distribute the meal in portions and eat 6 times a day
and some disagree to that. Many of the current dietary plans have replaced the historical dietary
recommendation to eat 3 large meals/day with a more frequent eating strategy that includes
consuming smaller amounts of food every 2–3 h, 4–6 times/day. According to the NHANES III,
1999–2000, ~80% of all Americans eat at least 4 times/day, with an average eating frequency of 5
eating occasions/day. (Kant and Graubard 2006), (Leidy and Campbell 2011).
Distributing a meal into 6hours a day is a good dietary plan as it keeps the hunger in control. It
maximizes the sensation of fullness and conserves energy for the body. When one is having a large
meal, he/she may have more than needed and since the stomach had been empty for a long break the
sensation of hunger was high. Increased feeding frequency has

History of Weight Loss
Since the beginning of time, weight loss has been a concern for people throughout the world. In the
Nineties, it has become the focus of numerous advertisements, articles, and media scams.
Infomercials selling everything from exercise equipment to magical creams promising results of
cellulite–free thighs are plastered across late–night television in perfect view for anyone. Along with
all of this, diet pills once again became the fad in 1994 with phen/fen. This was the first time since

Phentermine is a stimulant that acts through noradrenergic and dopaminergic pathways. This results
in decreased appetite, which in turn leads to less eating. Fenfluramine acts through serotonergic
mechanisms that induce increased satiety (http://www.weight.com/phenfen.html).
Redux, or Dexfenfluramine, is the first drug in more than twenty years that the FDA has approved
for weight loss. It is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent
(http://www.netek.com/weightwise/phen.htm). This anorexic drug, which has been used for years in
Europe, causes the release of serotonin in brain cells. The actual action of serotonin is uncertain, but
increased levels appear to stimulate the part of the brain which controls mood, sleep, and body
temperature among other functions (http://www.weight.com/Dexfenfluramine.html). A Phen/Fen

The retirement process for elite, professional, collegiate, and high school athletes can be very
difficult, especially when it is unexpected. Unexpected retirement frequently occurs because of
injury, but also because of deselection, and other outside causes (Lavallee, Gordon, & Grove, 1997).
Furthermore, Lavelle, Gordon, and Grove (1997) stated that the transition out of sport forces
athletes to combat multiple economical, interpersonal, and psychological adjustments, all of which
are unfamiliar to them. Other issues may include changes in mood, decline in motivation, the loss of
structure, the loss of teammates, and loss of control (Hubbard, 2014). A further analysis of research

Our bodies need water to perform well. Most of us do not drink enough water each day, thus we
likely suffer from mild dehydration. Inadequate water intake has a surprise impact to dieters. If you
are trying to lose weight but fail to drink adequate water, you can find yourself on a plateau. You
know what I mean is that you follow your diet, but the scales don 't reflect a loss. I welcome you to
read this entire article and learn of the importance of water to our well being.
If you are trying to lose weight, then water is your friend. It is also necessary for the body 's
biochemical processes, and is especially important for us when we diet to lose weight.
The body converts the stored fat into energy. Dehydration, the lack of water, can cause a slow–down
in the metabolism. The slower the metabolism, the slower the weight loss. Without adequate water,
the weight loss will slow down or completely stop. We call that reaching a plateau – we continue to
diet, but the scales do not move.

Illness Paper – Anorexia Nervosa
February 28, 2016
According to the Mayo Clinic (2016), eating disorders are "conditions related to persistent eating
behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions, and your ability to function in
important areas of life." One such eating disorder is anorexia nervosa. Not to be confused with
anorexia, which is simply a general loss of appetite that can be attributed to many medical ailments,
anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder and mental illness (Nordqvist, 2015). Anorexia nervosa
is estimated to affect about .9% of women and .3% of men in their lifetime ("Eating Disorder
Statistics & Research," n.d.). In general, the disorder is commonly characterized by a distorted body
image or self–concept, critically low weight (with respect to the patient's height and age), and an
irrational fear of becoming fat or an intense desire to be thin. There are two subtypes to this eating
disorder: restrictive and binge/purge. In the restrictive type, the individual limits caloric intake and
may compulsively over–exercise. In the binge/purge type, the individual consumes a considerable
amount of food in a short period of time (binging) and then deliberately vomits (purging), takes
laxatives, or fasts intensely in order to compensate for the food eaten ("General Information:
Anorexia Nervosa," n.d.). In either case, anorexia nervosa is undoubtedly a dangerous and alarming
illness.

The Prader Willi Syndrome ( Pws ) Is A Complex Genetic...
Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder caused by a chromosomal abnormality.
It is characterized by mild to moderate hyperphagia, severe obesity, intellectual disabilities, and
behavioral and psychiatric difficulties. Characteristic behavioral disturbances in PWS include
excessive interest in food, skin picking, temper tantrums, obsessive and compulsive behaviors, and
mood fluctuations. It occurs in approximately one in 25,000 to 30,000 live births with no
distinguishing sex or race association.
One of the most difficult challenges for those caring for individuals with PWS is hyperphagia–
abnormally increased appetite and lack of satiety–and the subsequent obesity. Obesity–related
complications of PWS, such a respiratory failure, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure,
have been recognized as the main causes of morbidity and mortality in individuals with PWS.
Untreated obesity limits the life expectancy from 20 to 30 years old. The diminished chance of an
individual with PWS to survive into adult life makes the treatment of eating behavior and the
subsequent obesity mandatory. The causes of hyperphagia and lack of satiety are unknown, limiting
the number conclusive treatment options available. Since the etiology of hyperphagia is unknown,
current research lacks a specific direction. Possible interventions range from medical interventions
to behavioral management procedures. A review of the literature on techniques for controlling

Behavioral Susceptibility Theory Of Obesity
Carnell S, Wardle J. Appetite and adiposity in children: evidence for a behavioral susceptibility
theory of obesity. Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 Jul;88(1):22–9. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/88/1/22.long
Objective: to determine if different appetite traits are associated with measures of adiposity in 3–5
and 8–11 year old British children. The two appetite traits investigated were satiety responsiveness
(internal cues to eat) and food cue responsiveness (external cues to eat).
Description of the subjects: The study looked at two populations, 8–11 year old twins and their
mothers from a large UK cohort study and 3–5 year olds and their parents recruited from 16 UK
nursery schools. In the 3–5 year olds, 46.9% were girls, 74.1% were normal weight. 18.9% were
overweight and 7% were obese. In the 8–11 year old twins, 51.5% were girls, 85.7% were normal
weight, 11.4% were overweight, and 2.9% were obese. The mean age of the parents were 34.9 years

Positive Appetites
Aquinas in the Theologiae Summa dedicates part of the text to the discussion of the irascible and
concupiscible parts of the sensitive appetite and then discusses through several different examples
the distinctions in each one. Concupiscible being the part of the appetite of human nature as well the
emotions we feel such as love, hatred, delight, goodness or malice (which will be discussed in this
paper), pain or sorrow etc. The Irascible part of the sensitive appetite include things such as hope
and despair, fear, daring, anger etc. These are labeled due to the difficulty which accompanies the
attempts to either acquire or avoid them. In this paper, I will be discussing Aquinas's approach to the
division of the sensitive appetite into concupiscible and irascible, his analysis of the goodness or
malice of passions in relation to the sensitive appetite and whether I find his approach to be valid or
if there are parts that could strengthened or omitted. Aquinas arrives at his distinction between
concupiscible and irascible passions by dividing them into two separate entities. He goes about his
approach by stating that, "the passions of different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aquinas then goes on to say that they have created the mistake by not making the distinction
between good insofar as it is simply good and what is good to an individual. It is also here in his
argument that I find myself agreeing heavily with Aquinas because what is good to an individual can
be used in varying degrees and there is no one correct answer to this dilemma. It goes without
saying that what is good to one individual is not good to another or two people can agree what is
good based upon a certain situation or extenuating circumstance but not in another situation or ever

Essay on The Use of Appetite Suppressants
The Use of Appetite Suppressants
In the past two decades, Americans and most of the Western world have become obsessed with
losing weight. Countless diets, weight loss strategies and gimmicks have been and remain on the
market and cost Americans billions of dollars every year. The media perpetuates this ideal of
thinness and so people continue in desperate attempts to shrink their bodies. People have gone to
extreme measures such as stomach stapling, liposuction and starvation diets to try and take off
excess weight. Many Americans are willing to do whatever is necessary to look a certain way, no
matter what the cost. Sometimes these costs outweigh the benefits of losing weight. Oftentimes,
when people diet and lose weight, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hypothalamus helps to tell the body when to give off hunger signals. PPA interrupts this system
and thus, the individual's appetite is somewhat curbed. Because the appetite is curbed, the individual
desires less food and ultimately loses weight. Appetite Suppressants have been around for a number
of years. Some people have actually taken them for years and years in attempt to curb their appetite.
One main appetite suppressant that has been around since the early 1900's is Phenylpropanolamine.
Phenylpropanolamine, also known as PPA is the main ingredient in common appetite suppressants
like Dexatrim, Vitaslim, Hungrex and Acutrim. PPA is a "non–methylated form of Ephidrine
(Morgan, p.3)." PPA first became known as a nasal decongestant and is still used in these over the
counter drugs today. Although PPA is the substance found in a number of cough/cold remedies, it is
also the active ingredient in most appetite suppressants.
Numerous studies have been done surrounding the effects of PPA on weight loss. Most studies show
that using the appetite suppressant, PPA along with diet and exercise will promote weight loss. PPA
has been shown to be extremely effective in helping people eat less and achieve the ultimate goal of
losing weight. In 1975, a study with 70 volunteers concluded "the subjects lost three times as much
weight while taking PPA than while taking the placebo (Lasagna, p.393)." Another

(Jeukendrup & Gleeson 2005). BMI provides some indication as to the patient's nutritional status. A
low BMI is associated with inadequate nutritional intake; this occurs when there is a deficiency or
imbalance in the nutrients consumed, which can lead to malnutrition. (Lennard–Jones,1992).
However some patients may have a normal or high BMI and be classed as malnourished. This can
be because they have a low intake of nutrients such as vitamins and protein, or because they may be
consuming the wrong type of foods (Ward and Rollins, 1999). There are three main ways that
malnutrition can occur, either through impaired absorption, impaired nutritional intake or an
increased metabolic demand. (Cartwright & Williams, 2002). BMI cannot differentiate between
body fat and muscle mass. This often results in misleading information with regard to the amount of
fat in the individual, as muscle is denser than fat. (British Heart Foundation 2009). Meaning there is
a potential risk of overestimating BMI in individuals with a high muscle mass, such as athletes. The
reliability of the BMI depends on the individual's abilities to accurately measure, calculate and
record the BMI. The tools used to measure the patients height and weight should also be checked to
ensure they read accurately, for example calibrating

Major Risk Factors for the Development of Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa is an aggressive eating disorder inflicting people indiscriminately around the
globe. It occurs primarily among females with onset generally occurring in early to late adolescence,
often resulting in death. Anorexia nervosa is characterised by an individuals refusal to maintain a
healthy weight, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image. The major risk factors
contributing to the development of anorexia are Genetics, Psychological Traits, Cultural and Media
Ideals and an unhealthy family environment.

This is due to men and women in westernised countries being exposed to unrealistic cultural
demands. Western society places great importance on success in all areas of life, including slimness.
People equate this success to their self worth, thinking that if they were thin, they would be happier,
or a better person. This is shown in the media 's representation of cultural ideals. Exposure to
western media ideals is a major risk factor for developing anorexia nervosa, or any eating disorder.
The media is constantly bombarding us with images of happy, successful people. These people are
usually portrayed by young, attractive, thin (often underweight) models and actors. While less
successful people are played by actors who are unattractive, and often overweight. In a study by
Health magazine (April 2002), 32 percent of female TV actors were underweight, compared to the 3
percent who are overweight. In another study conducted in 2002 of twins born between 1935 and
1958, the prevalence of anorexia nervosa was greater among those born after 1945. This is due to
more exposure to media and changing cultural ideals. In the 1950 's, Marilyn Monroe, a size 14 was
the ideal body shape. Twenty years ago, the average model weighed 8 percent less than the average
women. In 2003, models weighed 23 percent less than the general population.

Socrates Vs Socrates
Socrates' primary counter argument is one of substance verses superficiality. To judge an unjust
person as happy and blessed based solely on appearance misses the great turmoil inside such a
person. Because we are unable to examine the inner world of the individual, Socrates constructs two
cities, one built on justice and the other on injustice, as models for the just and unjust person. To
understand the devastating end of the unjust person one, need look no further than the unjust city
says Socrates.
Socrates argues that the city is made up of three classes: the money–making, auxiliary and
deliberative (Republic 441a1). A city is just when each class remains in its proper place and
performs its own work. The role of the deliberative class is to rule while the money–making class
concerns itself with matters of business, and the auxiliary with affairs of defense. It would be
unthinkable for the military to concern itself with business and vice versa because this is not their
strength. The same holds true for the deliberative class. Justice in a city requires each of the classes
remaining in their respective roles and perform those functions well and especially for the
deliberative class to rule over all.
With regard to the individual, Socrates tells us "...the same number and same kinds of classes as are
in the city are also in the soul of each individual..." (Republic 441c 4–5). The corresponding three
parts in the individual are reason, spirit and appetite. Reason rules over

Eating Disorders : Anorexia Nervosa
According to ANAD Eating Disorder Statistics about thirty million people in America of all ages
and genders suffer from one of the three main eating disorders. Many people suffer from more than
one of the eating disorders. Only 1 in 10 individuals receive the treatment that is needed to
recover(ANDA). Often eating disorders are known to be triggered by outside factors in their life, but
studies show that it is more likely to be a part of their genetics. According to Webster the definition
of an "Eating Disorder" is "Any of several psychological disorders (as anorexia nervosa or bulimia)
characterized by serious disturbances of eating behavior." Anorexia Nervosa is one of the three main
eating disorders. It has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses(ANAD). Anorexia Nervosa
is defined as a loss of appetite for food or refusing food in order to lose weight. Out of all of the
psychiatric disorders Anorexia Nervosa is the only one that has a physical symptom as one of the
diagnostic criteria(Schellenberg). Bulimia Nervosa is the second of the three main eating disorders.
1% of women develop bulimia(Eating). Bulimia is known as an individual consuming a vast amount
of food and then disposing of it through self–induced vomiting, the use of diuretics, or excessive
exercising. The third main eating disorder is Binge Eating Disorder. Individuals who develop this
disorder feel out of control while they are eating and tend to eat very large amounts. Binge eating is

Should Weight Loss Supplement Advertisements Be Banned?
Should Weight Loss Supplement Advertisements be Banned? We live in a world where the mass
media are incessantly influencing people to look a certain way. Advertisers persuade us that a
slender figure is the only accepted body shape. They make us feel horrible about ourselves and urge
us to take considerable measures. This is done by advertising tons of weight loss supplements,
which will apparently help us have the same shape we saw on TV or in magazines. Should we really
be manipulated to buy those supplements? It is very arguable whether these supplements work or
not, but we should definitely not let the advertising industry control our thinking. Banning these
weight loss supplement advertisements would help some people, especially young adults,
celebrities, and athletes, to choose healthier options of losing weight and to be confident about their
body shapes. These advertisements about weight loss supplements are not the solution to healthily
losing weight. The advertising industry tricks us into buying these supplements, but they do not
reveal all the side effects they bring along. An article written by Triplett shows how much money is
spent annually in the weight loss supplements' business in the United States. Triplett states,
"Americans spend at least $16 billion a year on nearly 30,000 kinds of dietary supplements, most of
which seem safe" (Triplett). But, not all of dietary supplements are as safe as advertisements claim
them to be. Unlike over–the counter

One of the reasons that cause Teenage Smoking is peer pressure. When hanging out with friends,
teens get pressured into doing things, one of them is smoking. Being pressured into smoking is
different from why they give in to the pressure. Evidently teens start smoking because they usually
want to fit into their social group, to please their teenage friends who smoke on a regular basis or
else they would be shamed and made a joke out of for not being a part of the group. Moreover,
teenagers want to be popular and accepted therefore, they will do what their peers want. If the
friends in their social group smoke it is most likely that the teen will also start smoking (Nelson).
Furthermore, teens who have at least two friends that smoke are six times more likely to become
intermittent smokers than those who their friends did not smoke (CBC News). This clearly
illustrates that peer pressure is one of the reasons that teens become smokers. So say that you give in
to the pressure and start

Drugging Your Children Research Paper
Drugging Your Children? Drugging your children?! What?! That sounds horrible?! To some people
yes this is horrible to others it's not. Many people believe that medicating a child with ADD or

people believe that medicating the same child with prescription medication is just the same as giving
your child medication not prescribed by a doctor. But is it right to medicate your child? In the case
where you medicate your child, the positives are that your child is more likely to focus, and apply

Evaluating A Nursing Care Plan
As a nurse, one must be aware of the Activities of Living (AoL), assessment methods and
understand how to formulate a Nursing Care Plan (NCP). When tending to a patient, it is important
to understand the AoL as well recognising how they are affecting the patient, how to assess one's
condition and what 'care needs' are priority when treating a patients symptoms. By having this
knowledge a nurse is able to develop a NCP more easily, therefore give the patient a greater quality
of care. When creating a NCP, one must assess, set goals, plan, implement and evaluate the
measures taken as well as incorporate a multi–disciplinary team, to ensure the patient receives the
best care possible. (Holland et al. 2015, p.2), (Doenges, ME, Moorhouse, MF, & Geissler–Murr, A

The Biological Processes Of Obesity
Obesity can develop when the cumulative energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, when this
happens the excess is stored primarily as fat in adipose tissues. The biological processes that
regulate the energy balance are highly regulated and this mechanism can be overwhelmed, because
of a need to eat when not hungry, if attractive high calorie food is presented in attractive settings,
and if individuals are regularly non–mobile for extended periods. The control pathways that include
short–term signaling of hunger and engorgement to the central nervous system with the hormones
that come from the gastrointestinal tract, long–term signaling of energy stores to the brain via leptin
and insulin, as well as the control of metabolism. Rare genetic syndromes also play a role and these
present in early childhood with severe obesity these include mutations in the pro–opiomelanocortin
gene and deficiencies in the leptin this demonstrates that the pathways are biologically important in
humans. Most obesity cases develop because of modern lifestyles in genetically susceptible
individuals. The changes include excessive consumption of high–energy food in tandem with low
levels of physical activity and that in many societies; less affluent people have a higher incidence
(Lee et al 2013). Other causes of obesity that are considered include some drugs that can cause an
increase in appetite and structural damage to areas of the nervous system that control appetite.

Obesity And Its Effects On Obesity
How is it that people can become obese knowing that the condition poses severe health risks? The
truth is, there are several different factors that contribute to obesity. Firstly, it is generally easier for
people to gain weight than it is for them to lose weight. Losing weight requires a substantial amount
of effort and determination, something that not a lot of people have (or at least not enough). Some
people believe that being overweight comes with birth and is determined by their genes, while
others believe that anyone can adjust his or her weight by following certain regimens. Although a
person's genes do affect his or her metabolic rate–the rate at which the body burns calories–, having
a healthy lifestyle and restricting one's caloric intake can undermine the drawbacks of having a
naturally low metabolic rate. A person's weight loss depends on how much he or she prioritizes his
or her health and physical appearance.
True, genetics can potentially facilitate weight gain and lead to obesity. Studies of obese people have
unveiled a genetic basis for their obesity; one of the studies found that the subjects had a defective
coding for leptin, the hormone responsible for appetite regulation. In another study, the subject
lacked the enzyme PCI, which converts the PMOC hormone into neuropeptides that regulate
appetite . These genetic defects, however, are rare and are not accountable for most cases of obesity
. Hereditary factors that are more common among obese individuals

a high calorie diet of most participants. The placebo group however seemed to gain weight.
Researchers did note that fat percentage stayed similar to original levels.
Another double–blind study gave 30 men between the ages of 18–44 a 250 mg dose of forskolin
twice per day. After the study had finished, researchers found that the forskolin group had noticeably
gained lean muscle mass yet decreased fat mass. There did seem to be a high variance in lean

community, and society." For example if a child's family was to have been pounce on by a natural
disaster and losing most of the family's life necessities then ultimately all the pressure and
disconformities would eventually trickle down to the child. Even though he was not directly
involved in the onslaught, his life will ultimately be effected as the family struggles to survive.
Macrosystem: Our text describes the macrosystem as, "The culture in which the individual lives.
Members of a cultural group share a common identity and most importantly values." The way a
community grieves depends on the community's values and beliefs. We as Mexican/Americans tend
to follow our ancestry way of mourning. We have a showing of the body to which is prayed a rosary
accompanied by beautiful music and is shown for roughly two days. The ritual is followed by a
mass then a priest will join the

  • 2. Analysis Of Appetites By Natasha Saje Natasha Saje wrote a piece called "Appetites" in which it highlights obesity and from where it stems from. In the poem the author's mother states "Dien Zug kennt keinen Bahnof" (Saje, 1). The statement from the mother translates to "your train knows no stations" from German to English. This is referring to the authors eating habits and how she would eat whatever she pleased. She was the train that was unwilling to stop at a station relating to how she would not stop eating. However, Saje did not mention that her mother did not try and stop her from eating so much and stopping that habit. This illustrates one of the causes of obesity plaguing the United States today. • 3. Anatomy Of Anorexia By Steven Levenkron The book I chose for the critical book review is, "Anatomy of Anorexia" by Steven Levenkron. This book concentrates on the importance of detecting early symptoms of anorexia nervosa. This book is suitable for parents and friends of anorexia sufferers or others who would like to inform them of this disorder. He states that it typically has to do with teenaged girls and how people who experience this mental illness need serious help. This mental illness can even cause death, if not treated on time. It mentions how girls who are obsessed over their weight and size try to lose even more weight by doing extreme workout programs and severely restrict calories. He explains ways to detect someone with the beginnings of anorexia. He mentions how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This analogy seems to really work for S. Levenkron. He is very proud of his record. He has taken on nearly 300 patients, of whom 90% have recovered sufficiently from this illness and only one of his patience took her life. However, parents should be quite thankful to have been notified by an expert like Steven Levenkron who knows the development of the disease and how to find a stop to it. "When small children develop a sense of trust, and later a sense of intimacy or closeness to another, and a sense of self or identity, they are not vulnerable to becoming "creatures of the culture" in its most extreme form as exemplified by the media: magazines, movies, and so on. But individuals who are seduced by popular trends allow these trends to define much of their identity" (20). In this quote it mentions how children at a young age develops trust in their surroundings and closeness to others. In the process, they begin looking for their own identity. Therefore, they wouldn't become defenseless to be like people in the media. They wouldn't get sucked into wanting to be the same, and try to be different. "Some of these traits, such as perfectionist behavior, may disguise themselves as gifts to parents. They may see the child as independent, not needing much support in a family overburdened by other problems. A successful child who often does well in school and is socially outgoing, does not appear worrisome" (21). In this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anorexia nervosa, a medical condition defined by an abnormal or pronounced lack of appetite, has become a household recognized condition due to its prevalence and impact. Anorexia nervosa is a major eating disorder that disrupts everyday life, resulting in extreme thinness, hormonal imbalances, behavioral signs, and health issues that can lead to death. While the disease strikes across all gender, races, and classes, the victims affected are typically young, healthy, and attractive women of successful families. As the anorectic victim continues to get worse and not eat, the disease becomes much more serious with more prominent health risks arising, and such long–term risks of heart problems, osteoporosis, amenorrhea, and death. Furthermore, anorexia nervosa has many internal health issues. One of the largest treatment hospitals in the UK, Maudsley Hospital shares how people with anorexia have variations in genes for serotonin receptors, which determines appetite(South London and Maudsley). Serotonin is described to be involved in everyday behaviors of sleep, hunger, response, behavior, depression, and anxiety (Website on Eating Disorder). High levels of serotonin and loss of appetite are linked with constant stress and anxiety. If too much serotonin is being distributed to the body, this will have a large effect on how much the person eats and feels hungry. Therefore, this misdistribution in serotonin leads to eating disorders because the body is not correctly balanced. Many scientists and doctors have studied the correlation between depression and eating disorders. When physicians test and examine young teenagers who are believed to be anorexic, amenorrhea is the most common symptom. Amenorrhea is the lack of a menstrual cycle and occurs because the body is not at the ideal body weight for the given height and age (Gross and Gidwani 41). • 14. Eating Disorders : Anorexia Nervosa Kelsey Galicia HDFS 408 Hernandez Illness Paper – Anorexia Nervosa February 28, 2016 According to the Mayo Clinic (2016), eating disorders are "conditions related to persistent eating behaviors that negatively impact your health, your emotions, and your ability to function in important areas of life." One such eating disorder is anorexia nervosa. Not to be confused with anorexia, which is simply a general loss of appetite that can be attributed to many medical ailments, anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder and mental illness (Nordqvist, 2015). Anorexia nervosa is estimated to affect about .9% of women and .3% of men in their lifetime ("Eating Disorder Statistics & Research," n.d.). In general, the disorder is commonly characterized by a distorted body image or self–concept, critically low weight (with respect to the patient's height and age), and an irrational fear of becoming fat or an intense desire to be thin. There are two subtypes to this eating disorder: restrictive and binge/purge. In the restrictive type, the individual limits caloric intake and may compulsively over–exercise. In the binge/purge type, the individual consumes a considerable amount of food in a short period of time (binging) and then deliberately vomits (purging), takes laxatives, or fasts intensely in order to compensate for the food eaten ("General Information: Anorexia Nervosa," n.d.). In either case, anorexia nervosa is undoubtedly a dangerous and alarming illness. As far as the etiology ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Prader Willi Syndrome ( Pws ) Is A Complex Genetic... Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic disorder caused by a chromosomal abnormality. It is characterized by mild to moderate hyperphagia, severe obesity, intellectual disabilities, and behavioral and psychiatric difficulties. Characteristic behavioral disturbances in PWS include excessive interest in food, skin picking, temper tantrums, obsessive and compulsive behaviors, and mood fluctuations. It occurs in approximately one in 25,000 to 30,000 live births with no distinguishing sex or race association. One of the most difficult challenges for those caring for individuals with PWS is hyperphagia– abnormally increased appetite and lack of satiety–and the subsequent obesity. Obesity–related complications of PWS, such a respiratory failure, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure, have been recognized as the main causes of morbidity and mortality in individuals with PWS. Untreated obesity limits the life expectancy from 20 to 30 years old. The diminished chance of an individual with PWS to survive into adult life makes the treatment of eating behavior and the subsequent obesity mandatory. The causes of hyperphagia and lack of satiety are unknown, limiting the number conclusive treatment options available. Since the etiology of hyperphagia is unknown, current research lacks a specific direction. Possible interventions range from medical interventions to behavioral management procedures. Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 Jul;88(1):22–9. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/88/1/22.long Objective: to determine if different appetite traits are associated with measures of adiposity in 3–5 and 8–11 year old British children. The two appetite traits investigated were satiety responsiveness (internal cues to eat) and food cue responsiveness (external cues to eat). Description of the subjects: The study looked at two populations, 8–11 year old twins and their mothers from a large UK cohort study and 3–5 year olds and their parents recruited from 16 UK nursery schools. In the 3–5 year olds, 46.9% were girls, 74.1% were normal weight. 18.9% were overweight and 7% were obese. Positive Appetites Aquinas in the Theologiae Summa dedicates part of the text to the discussion of the irascible and concupiscible parts of the sensitive appetite and then discusses through several different examples the distinctions in each one. Concupiscible being the part of the appetite of human nature as well the emotions we feel such as love, hatred, delight, goodness or malice (which will be discussed in this paper), pain or sorrow etc. The Irascible part of the sensitive appetite include things such as hope and despair, fear, daring, anger etc. These are labeled due to the difficulty which accompanies the attempts to either acquire or avoid them. In this paper, I will be discussing Aquinas's approach to the division of the sensitive appetite into concupiscible and irascible, his analysis of the goodness or malice of passions in relation to the sensitive appetite and whether I find his approach to be valid or if there are parts that could strengthened or omitted. Aquinas arrives at his distinction between concupiscible and irascible passions by dividing them into two separate entities. He goes about his approach by stating that, "the passions of different ... One main appetite suppressant that has been around since the early 1900's is Phenylpropanolamine. Phenylpropanolamine, also known as PPA is the main ingredient in common appetite suppressants like Dexatrim, Vitaslim, Hungrex and Acutrim. PPA is a "non–methylated form of Ephidrine (Morgan, p.3)." PPA has been shown to be extremely effective in helping people eat less and achieve the ultimate goal of losing weight. A low BMI is associated with inadequate nutritional intake; this occurs when there is a deficiency or imbalance in the nutrients consumed, which can lead to malnutrition. (Lennard–Jones,1992). However some patients may have a normal or high BMI and be classed as malnourished. This can be because they have a low intake of nutrients such as vitamins and protein, or because they may be consuming the wrong type of foods (Ward and Rollins, 1999). There are three main ways that malnutrition can occur, either through impaired absorption, impaired nutritional intake or an increased metabolic demand. (Cartwright & Williams, 2002). BMI cannot differentiate between body fat and muscle mass. This often results in misleading information with regard to the amount of fat in the individual, as muscle is denser than fat. (British Heart Foundation 2009). Meaning there is a potential risk of overestimating BMI in individuals with a high muscle mass, such as athletes. The reliability of the BMI depends on the individual's abilities to accurately measure, calculate and record the BMI. Exposure to western media ideals is a major risk factor for developing anorexia nervosa, or any eating disorder. The media is constantly bombarding us with images of happy, successful people. • 25. Socrates Vs Socrates Socrates' primary counter argument is one of substance verses superficiality. To judge an unjust person as happy and blessed based solely on appearance misses the great turmoil inside such a person. Because we are unable to examine the inner world of the individual, Socrates constructs two cities, one built on justice and the other on injustice, as models for the just and unjust person. To understand the devastating end of the unjust person one, need look no further than the unjust city says Socrates. Socrates argues that the city is made up of three classes: the money–making, auxiliary and deliberative (Republic 441a1). A city is just when each class remains in its proper place and performs its own work. The role of the deliberative class is to rule while the money–making class concerns itself with matters of business, and the auxiliary with affairs of defense. It would be unthinkable for the military to concern itself with business and vice versa because this is not their strength. The same holds true for the deliberative class. Justice in a city requires each of the classes remaining in their respective roles and perform those functions well and especially for the deliberative class to rule over all. With regard to the individual, Socrates tells us "...the same number and same kinds of classes as are in the city are also in the soul of each individual..." (Republic 441c 4–5). When tending to a patient, it is important to understand the AoL as well recognising how they are affecting the patient, how to assess one's condition and what 'care needs' are priority when treating a patients symptoms. • 35. The Biological Processes Of Obesity Obesity can develop when the cumulative energy intake exceeds energy expenditure, when this happens the excess is stored primarily as fat in adipose tissues. The biological processes that regulate the energy balance are highly regulated and this mechanism can be overwhelmed, because of a need to eat when not hungry, if attractive high calorie food is presented in attractive settings, and if individuals are regularly non–mobile for extended periods. The control pathways that include short–term signaling of hunger and engorgement to the central nervous system with the hormones that come from the gastrointestinal tract, long–term signaling of energy stores to the brain via leptin and insulin, as well as the control of metabolism. Rare genetic syndromes also play a role and these present in early childhood with severe obesity these include mutations in the pro–opiomelanocortin gene and deficiencies in the leptin this demonstrates that the pathways are biologically important in humans. Most obesity cases develop because of modern lifestyles in genetically susceptible individuals. The changes include excessive consumption of high–energy food in tandem with low levels of physical activity and that in many societies; less affluent people have a higher incidence (Lee et al 2013). Other causes of obesity that are considered include some drugs that can cause an increase in appetite and structural damage to areas of the nervous system that control appetite. • 38. Obesity And Its Effects On Obesity How is it that people can become obese knowing that the condition poses severe health risks? The truth is, there are several different factors that contribute to obesity. Firstly, it is generally easier for people to gain weight than it is for them to lose weight. Losing weight requires a substantial amount of effort and determination, something that not a lot of people have (or at least not enough). Some people believe that being overweight comes with birth and is determined by their genes, while others believe that anyone can adjust his or her weight by following certain regimens. Although a person's genes do affect his or her metabolic rate–the rate at which the body burns calories–, having a healthy lifestyle and restricting one's caloric intake can undermine the drawbacks of having a naturally low metabolic rate. A person's weight loss depends on how much he or she prioritizes his or her health and physical appearance. True, genetics can potentially facilitate weight gain and lead to obesity. Studies of obese people have unveiled a genetic basis for their obesity; one of the studies found that the subjects had a defective coding for leptin, the hormone responsible for appetite regulation. In another study, the subject lacked the enzyme PCI, which converts the PMOC hormone into neuropeptides that regulate appetite . These genetic defects, however, are rare and are not accountable for most cases of obesity . Hereditary factors that are more common among obese individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, it does appear to be more effective in men than women due to its' ability to boost testosterone levels. USER EXPERIENCE In a recent study, 23 obese females were given 250mg of forskolin twice a day or a placebo for three months. After twelve weeks, researchers found that forskolin seemed to negate weight gain, despite a high calorie diet of most participants. The placebo group however seemed to gain weight. Researchers did note that fat percentage stayed similar to original levels. Another double–blind study gave 30 men between the ages of 18–44 a 250 mg dose of forskolin twice per day. After the study had finished, researchers found that the forskolin group had noticeably gained lean muscle mass yet decreased fat mass. There did seem to be a high variance in lean muscle mass gains but fat loss was significantly greater in the forskolin group compared to the placebo group. WHAT THE PRODUCT OFFERS. Forskolin offers a great chance of losing weight and also dealing with other conditions and it has the evidence to support it, but it should not be treated as a miracle cure for weight loss because that do not exist.
