1. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Primary research is when
researcher use
questionnaires and survey
from the public to understand
what the public like which is
then used to improve a
product.
The advantages for primary
research is can be specify for
example “ what don’t you like
about this product?” this help
the producer to understand
they would improve their
product.
he disadvantages of primary
research is that is cost a lot to
run. Also it is very time
consuming because there a
range of different part to
complete which makes the
results less accurate.
Secondary
Secondary is when researcher
use ready collect data from
magazine, newspaper and
books. So they use this
research instead getting their
own research.
The advantages of secondary
research are that it cost
affective also it has easy
access. Also it gives a more
detailed for the primary
research.
The disadvantages of
secondary research are that it
the quality of the information
that is given is the best. The
reason why it is not is
because they taking it from
magazines which would be
out of date.
Quantitative
To quantify data and
generalize results from a
sample to the population of
interest
This will give researchers a
good idea of when to show
something, where to show
it( on tv) or if it’s a magazine/
paper how much to set the
price at and what shops to sell
it too
results are limited as they
provide number/statistical
descriptions rather than
detailed/worded answers and
generally provide less
accounts of someone’s view
on something
Qualitative
It is used to get a greater
understanding of reasons,
opinions, and motivations of
why people do something. It
provides insights into the
problem or helps to develop
ideas or hypotheses for
potential quantitative
research.
it will be easier to gain a better
understanding of the target
market because the types of
questions that are asked are
worded easily so it will be easy
to answer.
It's not a research method that
allows for statistical data but
that can easily be overcome
by adding in other research
methods (numbers eg: bar
chat, pie chart etc..) to back
up your answers/research
2. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
What research methods did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 (Unit 18 Advertising and Unit
21 Media Project? (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative)
The research methods that I used in my year 11 work were PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND QUALITATIVE. The primary
and secondary were the two main methods that I used. For example I used primary in my unit 18 finding out about the
different adverts to give me inspiration form my own advert, and I used primary in my unit 21 to find different types and
analysis of the different pictures and secondary for magazine formats and analysis in more depth and qualitative by asking
people on what they think is a better idea and what they like better ( as shown on my pre-production work) so I had to
form graphs and tables for that.
What research techniques did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 (Unit 18 Advertising and Unit
21 Media Project? (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises, plans etc)
The techniques that I used were the internet( for research and to get the photos for analysing and decoration)( for both
unit 21 and 18) I used some leaflets and magazines so I can get a rough Idea so I can get a rough idea of how I wanted
my unit 21 magazine spread to look like( only for unit 21) I used videos to give me a better understanding of how videos
are edited so it may give me some useful tips of how to edit my advert(only for unit 18) they’re there main research
techniques that I used during my unit 18 and 21 projects.
How did you collate, store and use the information trail for Units 18 and 21? (e.g. did you book mark key
websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
Everything that I needed to keep I kept in my folders either unit 18 or folder unit 21. I kept on screen grabbing my work as
I went along as I built and contracted my final pieces so I could add it into my evaluation I also saved all of the
imperfections that I either changed or adapted so I had something else to talk about in my evaluation and so I can
evaluate my own work to get me a higher grade
3. Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
How and why might you use the four research methods in a real life situation? For example if you worked for the
BBC and were tasked with creating a new reality TV show how might you use the four research methods to help?
If I worked for the BBC I would first go out into the public and would use primary research to find out what the people
want. I would first come up with some new ideas for a show and find out what the majority want. However this is very time
consuming and you don’t get through many people in a long time. Then I would try and use some quantitative research to
expand my search for what people want and what they will enjoy. Then to finish off my research I would do some
Qualitative research so we could get a greater understanding on what our target is and how we should go and aim our
show at.
