of the ‘OS’s’of hiphopculture as we
know it today.
In thismusicvideo,we cansee
people inveryvibrantcolours,with
very‘liquid’like dance moves,truly
movingtothe beat.
There are a lotof people dancing
and watchingthe people groovingto
the beat,thiscouldsuggestthat this
type of musicwouldbringpeople
together?
The settingthat theyare in isina
game show like place.Thisisbythe
time that game showswere really
kickingoff intelevision.Thisis
perhapsfollowingthe timesand
phasesof that era.
Thisis an organiseddance routine
(because theyare all perfectly
positioned) sowe cantell thatthe
earlyhiphopgenre ismusicto make
youdance andsomethingthatI
coulduse in myvideo.
From thisshot,itlookslike arun
waywhichis normallyassociated
withfashion.Andinthe late 70’s is
whenthe worldreallystaredtoget
into fashionandthe fashion
businessreallystartedtofromthe
worldon whatwe weardue to easy
access to the mediagrowing.So
once again theyare keepingwith
the times.

2. Now skipforward9 yearsto NWA’s
‘expressyourself’,thisisbythe time
where hip-hopwasmore affiliated
withgangsterrapping,soeven
thoughthe beat isthe same,the
timeshaschange dramatically,so
the conventionsof the contentthat
the musicvideohasis different,in
the fact that itsmore aboutdark
coloursand more lookingatthe
more illegal partof the law (drugs,
crime ect),so theyhave included
thisinthe videobecause some of
the videoisfilmedinajail (thisis
due to the unequallythatblack
people hadagainstwhite people.
Anotheradaptationtothe newer
era of hiphop musicvideos
(comparedtothe rappersdelight
era) it has more urbanshots and
graffiti writinginasort of ran down
places.Thiscouldbe representing
that gangsterrap ismore forthe
streetsandwill alwaysremainon
the streetsas well,Icantell this
because almosthalf of the shotsare
inthe streetsof Comptonandthe
people of Comptonaswell.
Anotherpiece of miesen scene is
that theyare all wearingexpensive
lookingjewellery.Thisisalsoapiece
of itemsthatgangstersinthe 1980’s
were typicallyrepresentedof
wearing.
I have alsonoticedthatin the newer
age of hiphop,theyalsoinclude
weirdshotsof imagesinas well.SoI
am alsogoingto have to use that in
my video.

3. Now we will lookatone of the newestformsof hip
hop(whichisthe one that I will mainlybe looking
at so for mymusicvideo) whichisukhiphop.
It starts off witha shotof the performerwalkingin
an urban environment(whichhasa strong
correlationwiththe 80’s formof hip hop) this
obeysGoodwin’stheorybysayingthat there isa
relationshipbetweenthe lyricsandthe visualsof
the video .Afterthis,ithas more shotsof himjust
walking(whichisthe name of the song) through
the streets,howevereachshotaveragesforabout
4-6 secondsinlength.He alsowavestopeople in
the streets,maybe meaningthathe isbiginthat
townbecause he isfamous.
The shots that are usedinthis video,typicallyhave
a fishlensonit,and are all differentshots,thisisa
goodtechnique touse due to the audience bot
gettingboredof seeingthe same P.O.V everytime.
As mise enscene,theyare usingloadsof everyday
props,for example inthisshottheyare usinga
shoppingtrolleyashe isjustroamingthe shops,
whichisa veryaverage andnormal thingfor a
personto be doing,sotheyare still representing
the everydaypersoninthisvideo.
Thisis a verygoodshot/ methodthatI can use in
my video,because thisisagoodexample of match
on action,whenhe throwshisjumperonthe
camera,he takesitoff and isin a differentoutfit
and starts to rap to the song,whichisvery
entertainingto watch.

4. As we can see here,the mainperformerhashis
matesor fanswithhim.Thisis a commonthingto
happenina hiphop musicvideo,withthe mates
inthe backgroundfollowinghimandsupporting
him.Thisis an elementthatIcan addto my video
and wouldfitinverynicely.
It endswitha brokeneffect,the reasonforthgis
isbecause ithas a smashingglasssoundFX.Also
it maybe representinghow the audience feel
afterlisteningtothis,soithas a physical andalso
symbolicmeaningbehinditaswell.
One of the mainelementsthat
doesn’tfollow Goodwin’s
theoryisthat There isn’ta
frequentreference tonotion
of lookingandparticular
voyeuristicof the femalebody.
inthe videothatI’mdoing
there isn’tanywomeninthe
video.
Goodwin alsostatesthatthe star image isthe mostvital part of the musicvideo.The artists
wantto keepan individual andunique imagetostaycurrentand for the audiencesto
rememberthem(LadyGaGa).Thisplaysa big role in the productionprocessof the music
video. Sothisisan elementthatIwantto add to my musicvideo,andtomatch the genre of
the video.SoI will be doingthisbymakingmyactor wear loadsof differenturban clothing
however,Iwill gethimtokeepone piece of clothingon(maybe the same hat) sothatcould
be hisiconicpiece of clothingsothe audience canrelate to himinthat way.Thiswouldalso

shot),angle of the camera (P.O.V shot,lowshot,close up),mise-en-scene,editingof the clipstogether,soundandanyspecial
effectsused.The speed,cameramovement,editingandpostproductionare all differentformsof use of camera.Lightingand
colourhelpsetmoodsand give emphasistokeymovementsof the songtogive a more dramaticeffecttokeepthe audience
entertained.Mise-en-scene andthe settingof musicvideosisvital asitall needstolookauthentictokeepthe professionalism.
Music videosuse cutsto go withthe beator rhythmmakingthe videomore entertainingforthe audience towatch,boosting
theirchancesof wantingto listen/watchitagain. Sofor my musicvideoIwill be usingfastpacedclipsandalsohave a big range
of cameraangle and methodstohelp me tell mystorywhichrelatestothe meaningbehindthe song.
Narrative andperformance are twoparts workhand inhand tomake a more enjoyable musicvideo.The narrativeisthe story
that the videohasand the performance isa live performance fromthe artisttointerestthe audience.Goodwinbelievesthat
mimingthe wordstothe songis still the mostpopularthingdone inmusicvideostoday,butthe artist’sbestinteresttomake it
lookas real as possible tothe audience tomake itmore enjoyabletowatch,andalso whenthe artistissingingthe wordsthey
act it out as well.Thiscanbe calledcoherentrepeatability,thismeansthatitmakesiteasierforthe audience towatchitover
and overagaindue to it beingmore entertaining. SoformyvideoIwill mainlybe doingperformance,due tothe factthat in all
the uk hiphop videosive seen,theyhave all mainlyhadpreforminginithowevertheyhave alsohada slightconnectionwith
narrative,inthe fact that theywill gothroughthe whole day,frommorningtonight,soeventhoughitisnttellingawhole
meaningful story,itistakingthe audience throughtheirday,soto an extent,itisaslightnarrative videobecause of thatreason.
