• Who is an instructor in distance education?
An instructor is a facilitator or a guide who helps
and supports learners in distance education.
Functions of an Instructor
There are many functions of an instructor and
these can be grouped under four main
categories namely:
1. Teaching function
2. Students progress
3. Learner support
4. Evaluating course effectiveness
Teaching Function
• Highlighting important parts of course/unit for
students to pay attention to.
• Providing intervenes on discussion forums.
• Interacting with individuals and groups to help
them with their work.
Students Progress
• Reviewing students assignments
• Evaluating students work
• Providing feedback to students
Learner Support
• Responding to learner queries
• Suggestion of other reading materials to
students
• Referral of learners to specialist
• Recognizing learners problems and helping
them to solve them
Evaluating Course Effectiveness
• The instructor is the ultimate “eye and ear” of
the system. This makes him the best
moderator between the managers of the
system and learners.
• The instructor is also suppose to help the
managers in taking decisions about the
system.
