Editor's Notes
The topic I choose to research was natural disasters and the affect of poverty around the world.
Recent disaster that happen around the world.Typhoon Haiyan was one of the strongest storms to make landfall in Central Philippines on November 8. This storm killed nearly 6,000 people and displaced more than 3.6 million people. Along with many deaths the typhoon wiped out coastal cities and destroyed roads, water and sanitation systems, and telephone lines.Typhoon Phailin was the strongest cyclone to hit India in 14 years. This typhoon affect as many as 13 million people in the country’s northeast. But this storm killed less than 50 people. Early evacuation and being prepared for this disaster allowed many lives to be saved.Hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid overwhelmed the western Mexico with rain and flooding in September. More than 200,000 people where affected by these two separate stormsEarthquake in the Philippines hit just three weeks before Typhoon Haiyan hit central Philippines. This earthquake having a magnitude of 7.2 killed nearly 222 people and displaced 350,000 by damaging and destroying tens of thousands buildings. Many people had not found adequate shelter before Typhoon Haiyan hit contributing to the thousands of deaths Typhoon Haiyan caused.Tornados in Oklahoma City area on May 20th destroyed several homes and damages schools. This 200 mph winds and 12 mile path killed 24 people and left 15,000 affected people with out homes, injuries and without food.
How these countries are affected by natural disasters and the aftermath. Rebuilding homes and building is huge. For example with the Philippines Island lies right in “typhoon alley.” With a push to restore buildings and homes they want to take this opportunity to not only build sage homes but create a change to help with similar disasters in the future.Debt Repayment especially in countries that are in poverty and debt already is a big issue and becomes more of a problem now.Health and aid is needed after the disasters happen. Aid and relief volunteers travel to these places to lead a hand and help those that need help.Economy- A natural disaster has a huge impact on countries in poverty. After a natural disaster public funds are used for rebuilding, repairs, rehabilitation, support, and medical aid.
What we can do to help natural disasters.Donate to charities and to the World Vision’s Disaster Response Fund. Your donations will go toward life saving assistance, recovery, and rebuilding the aftermath of the stormU.S. Disaster Response Fund. Make a donation right here in the United States to help those affect by recent storms in Texas and Oklahoma.
Here are a few pictures of the recent natural disasters that happen around the world in the past year.
