2. Land degradation is a process in
which the value of the biophysical
environment is affected by
combination of human-induced
processes acting upon the land
Deterioration in the quality of land,
its topsoil, vegetation or
water resources, caused usually by
excessive or inappropriate
exploitation.
4. CAUSES :
Land clearance, such as deforestation and clear
cutting
Agricultural depletion of soil nutrients through poor
farming practices
Livestock including overgrazing and overdrafting
Inappropriate irrigation,mono culture and over
drafting
Soil contamination and mining activities.
Dumping of non-biodegradable trash, such
as plastics
5. EFFECTS:
Soil erosion is one of the most
destructive phenomena of land
degradation.
Surface runoff and floods.
Desertification.
Loss of Nutrients and land productivity.
Loss of fodder, decline in production of
timber.
7. PREVENTIVE MEASURES:
Proper management of waste lands.
Control of mining activities.
Proper discharge and disposal of industrial
wastes.
Using natural fertilizers.
Afforestation and proper management of
gazing can help to some extent.
Stabilisation of sand dunes by growing
thorny bushes.
