The document discusses costume design choices for characters in scenes from films based on genre conventions. It notes that costumes in horror films fit the scenario and make the dream sequence in Black Swan seem real. For their opening scene, the main character will wear pajamas to fit waking up from a dream with muddy slippers. The stalker's costume will be made pale and plain like creepy characters from The Ring and The Grudge to fit the thriller genre.
Costume choices fit scenes and genres in short films
1. The costume for the victim always fits with
what is happening in the scene. In The
Black Swan the main character is having a
dream about a ballet performance and the
costume is a tutu. In What Lies Beneath the
character is wearing a dressing gown this
fits with the scene because she had just got
out of the bath. From watching the
openings the main characters wear the
clothes that they would wear everyday.
However in black swan the outfit fitted the
scenario.
From this research we are going to make
the main character wear pj’s in the entire
opening because it will fit with the scene.
The props will be slippers and tea. We have
chosen to use pj’s in the dream because
when Aisha wakes up the slippers will be in
her room covered in mud. This makes the
dream seem real and will make the
audience question if the dream was real.
2. The costume for the friend is often similar
to the main characters costume. There
costume normally fits the scene. This
screen shot is from Easy A, Her costume fits
the scene because she is in high school and
because it is an American school she
doesn’t wear uniform.
We have decided that our character will be
selfish and conscious about the way she
looks. She is going to wear fashionable and
colourful clothes. The clothing will be
comfortable and relaxed. She will also have
a phone as a prop, This will be used as a
distraction since she doesn’t pay attention
to her friend.

3. The costume for the stalker/killer is always
creepy and is meant to have an effect on
the audience. These pictures are from The
Ring and The Grudge, both costumes are
similar. In thrillers if the killer/stalker is a girl
then the costumes are similar to these
photos. I think this is because the dark ratty
hair and the pale face is seen as scary and
unnatural.
For our stalker we were going to make
it so you couldn’t see the face or what
gender it was but after this research
we are going to base it on these
characters to make it fit in to the genre
more. We are going to use make-up to
make our characters skin paler and
darkness under her eyes. For the
costume we are going to keep it plain
like in the photos.
