made. Some people find an interest in certain paintings while others may not find that exact
attachment to the painting like others. I have chosen to write about this artist because of the many
and beautiful arts of work he has created through many years. Although some I may not find a
meaning to or why he would make a piece of art the way he did, they still seem to catch my

Van Gogh's friend, Gauguin, would join him, but things were not going to be for the best. Towards
the end of the year of 1888, a tragic accident would cause Gaugin to leave the town of Arles.
Vincent Van Gogh was going through an episode in which he charged at his friend with an open
razor. During the process, Gaugin would eventually try to stop Van Gogh, but unfortunately he
would only end up just cutting a portion of his own ear lobe off. Vincent than later became acting
out of character which would then lead up to the point where he would be sent off to an asylum in

raised into a religious environment, he was also raised in a strict one as well. At one point of his life

Vincent was secretive and did not blend in with other children. Elisabeth later claimed "not only
were his little brothers and sisters like a stranger to him, but he was a stranger to himself as well.

Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus. Van Gogh attended a boarding school in
Zevenbergen for two years and then went on to attend the King Willem II secondary school in

paintings he would receive from Gauguin, in exchange for his support, would turn a profit. Unlike

works, and draw inspiration from their own lives. First, the elements of their craft support the ideas
they are trying to express one of these ideas that is similar between both of them is by using certain

He was put in a hospital, and when Theo came on Christmas day to visit he saw his brother having
seizures and weak from blood loss. Once released from the hospital Gogh was lonely, depressed,

Tranquil Melodies
In Art Appreciation on the first week, we watched a video that showed multiple pieces of artwork
from Vincent Van Gogh, and it played the song "Vincent" by Don Mclean. This presentation was
interesting, and obviously deep. The song seems to be describing Vincent's life and motives as an
artist. The song and display of art made me feel tranquil, or calm and relaxed. I liked the lyrics to
the song, but what I find most interesting is how the progress between the different self portraits of
Vincent is apparent.
The song "Vincent" by Mclean has a slow and light tune. The main emotion I feel when watching
this video is tranquility. Seeing most of the art for the first time, I somewhat became lost in the
amazing details and designs Van Gogh has used. The music, along with the slide show of beautiful
and wondrous artwork, aided in my emotions on this video. I had never heard the song before either.
The song itself revealed much information about Vincent that I was unaware of. Though, mainly, I
believe the song actually molded my first impression on Van Gogh. The song made him out to be a
misunderstood individual who may not have been well liked by a majority. A verse from the song
goes, " For they could not love you, but still your love was true, and when no hope was left in sight

I can see a huge difference in his efforts as the number of his portraits rise. At first, they are dark,
and seem mysterious with much contrast. I believe in his later work, he is even surrounded by
brighter colors and even wearing a bright yellow hat, as opposed to some of his earlier work, where

Its naturalistic and down–to–earth treatment of its subject matter, most commonly landscapes, has
its roots in the French Realism of Camille Corot and others. Post–Impressionism is a period of art
that was influenced by Impressionism, but the artists took their art in other directions. Van Gogh's

Vincent van Gogh was born in a small village in Holland on March 30, 1853. This date is significant
as van Gogh's dead brother was born exactly one year before him. His parents could not deal with
the trauma of losing their first son, as a result this left a lasting impression on the second Vincent.
Van Gogh's older sister, described his adolescence as "intensely serious and uncommunicative...he
was a stranger to himself" (Butterfield, 1998). The artist himself was aware of his own deviating
behavior, in a letter he wrote to his brother, he expresses: "my youth was gloomy, cold and sterile"
(Butterfield, 1998). During the later part of his life van Gogh's paintings exhibited a common theme
of yellow hues ; he was personally concerned with his self–image; and increasingly became
dependent on foxplate flowers as a means of treating the epileptic seizures. During the last two
years of his life, Vincent is taken in and out of asylums and receives treatment with little success. He

In the painting, Starry Night, an enormous black figure is towering over the town, blocking part of
the view of the stars. This figure stands out to the viewer due to it's shape, making it rather ordinary.

He began to use more primary colors instead of the dark foreboding colors from his early paintings.
He also began painting solely outside which he continued for the remainder of his life. After two
years in Paris, Van Gogh and a friend, Gauguin moved to Arles. His friend did not like it there and
decided to return to Paris, this angered Van Gogh. He began to exhibit behaviors which were
reminiscent of his earlier troubled years. When Van Gogh became angry and chased Gauguin
through the streets with a knife, the friend began to fear for his life. The friend refused to stay the
night in their apartment that evening and in response, Van Gogh went to a local bar and cut off his
own ear which he gave to a known prostitute for payment saying, "keep this object carefully." Van
Gogh had to go to the hospital for care, and decided to commit himself to an asylum for the insane.
Here he hoped to restore his self confidence and health, but after only a short time he returned to
Paris. Upon learning of his brother Theo's financial problems and his child's health issues life was
overwhelming. One afternoon in July, Van Gogh went into the garden to paint and committed
suicide with a single gunshot. His lifelong struggle with mental illness, causing him to live much of
his life poor and virtually unknown, ultimately led to his death in 1890.

Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most recognized artists in the world. Van Gogh
was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot–Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh was born into a family of
six children in which his father was a pastor and his mother was an artist. He was named after his
stillborn brother who died exactly one year before he was born. When Van Gogh was sixteen, his
first job was working for his uncle at Goupil et Cie, an art gallery in The Hague. When he was
nineteen he went to work at the Groupil Gallery in London and then to the gallery in Paris. He was
finally fired from the gallery because he was not happy with his job and discoursed customers from
buying the artwork. After that he decided that he wanted to be a preacher and studied to get into a
theological school but failed. In 1879 he went to Borinage, a coal mining town, as a missionary to
the poor coal miners. He lasted there a couple of years and then was dismissed. Van Gogh's closest
friend was his younger brother Theo, who supported his work and gave him advice. Van Gogh wrote
over 800 letters to Theo describing his works and his feelings. He often drew sketches of his ideas
and paintings in the letters. This collection of letters is also referred to as a piece of art work. In
1880 at the age of twenty–seven Van Gogh moved to Brussels to become an artist. He studied with

Vincent then attended preparatory classes with intense lessons of Dutch, German, French, and
English along with the traditional array of math and science courses. Yet for reasons unknown, in
March of 1868, Vincent returned to his home in Zundert. His boyhood came to a close in July of
1869 when he joined the art business as a dealer for Goupil & Co. This was a family tradition, as
three of his uncles, including one also by the name of Vincent, were also art dealers. Vincent's
brother Theo would also become an art dealer four years after him. As a young child, Vincent was

My love of art began at a young age, spending hours coloring or doodling. The creative process is
cathartic for me and something I try to find time for every day either in music or by artistic means.
When I was in eighth grade, I attended a college fair with my older sister and someone asked me
what my interests were. The immediate answer was art and music. As we looked around at options,
a degree in Art Therapy was proposed by one of the private colleges at the event. I was intrigued by
