2. In short about Debrecen
• Debrecen is the second
largest city in Hungary.
Sometimes we call it: the
Calvinist Rome or Civic city.
• It has got many landmarks,
for example : the Great
Church in Kossuth Square,
the Big Forest or St. Anne’s
Cathedral.
• The population of Debrecen:
about 207000 people
3. The Flower Carnival
• It is the most famous
event in Debrecen. On
20th August Hungarians
celebrate the foundation
of the Hungarian State.
• It is a spectacular event
with carriages decorated
with beautiful flowers
and dance groups from
all over the world.
4. Bicycles’ Parade in Debrecen
The people in Debrecen
organize the Bicycle Parade
twice a year: on 22nd April and
22nd September.
Its name is: the Critical Mass.
The purpose of this event:
• You can protect the
environment
• You shouldn’t use your car
• Use your bicycle because you
will be healthier!
5. The University of Debrecen for
environment
The University's students have
created an environmental
protection program called: „Zöld
Börze”. It includes water &
energy saving actions and
environmental protection. If we
pay attention to these factors, our
environment will be healthier,
more beautiful and more liveable.
6. Community Intermodal Transportation
Center in Debrecen
The design phase of the construction of the intermodal
community center in Debrecen can start. The facility
would focus on the management of the rail, the long
distance and the local public transportation to one
place, Petőfi Square.
The modification of the tram route, the construction of a
new roundabout junction and the building of an
underground garage with 600 places are also among
the plans.
9. It is located north of the downtown and provides
good walks, several opportunities for
entertainment and relaxation. Special,
endangered plants and animals live in the Big
Forest. This area is named after the huge trees,
which can be 100-120m high. The main problems
were aridity, the old oaks’ degradation and illegal
waste dumping in the Big Forest. But the Big
Forest has been the part of the national reserve
since 1939. So the situation is better now.
11. In the middle of the Big Forest you can visit Frogs’
Pond, around which you can find a playground,
walking trails and rest areas. Frogs’ Pond is an
artificial pond with a bridge. It was named after
the frogs that live there. It has a very friendly and
peaceful surrounding because volunteers
planted many water lilies and irises into the
pond.
We often organise great events here, for example
the Bicycle parade, where you can do more for
your health. The biggest event also takes place
here in summer. This is the Campus festival.
Lots of Hungarians and foreigners come to
Debrecen at this time.

The Italian AnsaldoBreda firm won the competition.
