2. Historical responsibility
• We are presentating the view of
our generation
• At the beginning we tried to
define the term
• Where can we hear about HR?
• Incidents connected with history
of 20. century (especially World War
II)
• In Czech Republic delicate theme of
forcibly expulsion of Sudeten
Germans from Czechoslovak
Republic
3. What happened with Sudeten?
• History of German people
• First differentiation in 20th century
• 2 WW – German colonization, Czech recapture.
4. For what we should bear
responsibility?
I. We should bear responsibility for historical
acts of our ancestors/nationals.
II. We should feel the guilt and assume
responsibility for acts, that we have not done
and that we had no chance to affect.
III. I am shamed of crimes of my
ancestors/nationals more than of people not
related with me.
?
5. IV. Should we bear responsibility for crimes of our
ancestors/nationals from which we benefit?
?
V. I think it is right to respond to crimes of past
with good acts of present, especially if crimes
were committed by people related to us.
6. Try to solve the problem
Historical problem which have not been solved
What can we do now?
› Pay back what had been stolen
› Officialy plead guilty and apologize for acts of nation, acts of
government
› Speak about it with contemporary witnesses, show that we
know about their stories
› Speak about it in Czech society
Will it work? Will it help somebody? Whom will it help
to?
7. It won't work
• We think, that we (our generation) cannot bear
responsibility for history. We can be sorry for it but it is
not our fault.
8. For what can we bear the
responsibility?
… for our present and future
› Do not forget the history
› Do not reapeat faults of past
› Do not forget people (and their acts) who lived before me
(who made things I benefit from)
› Benefit from their examples, take brave and hope from
their lives
› Be responsible in our lives (elections…)
At the beginnig we‘d like to point out that we are presentating the view/the opinion of us four (not of Czech society)
We started work with this theme by attempto to define the term HR – but it is really complicated and it isn‘t clear what is the meaning of term (and what different people think the meaning is). So we started to find examples, where they are operated with this term.
-Bylo by dobré třeba i pustit nějaké video, ukázat mapu atd.
-(po porážce německa v 2WW byli z území sudet vystěhováni německy mluvící obyvatelé. Došlo i k zabíjení.) – co se týče historie, nevím, co napsat (nejsem tak dobrý dějepisář ) ani nevím jak to formulovat do prezentace.
-closer acquaintance with the subject. (Co je teda ta historická zodpovědnost v Sudetech. - naše dostávání se do problému – lepší znalost.)
->bylo to politické rozhodnutí
->my tam nebyli, ale udělal to náš národ
All discussion about bearing responsibility for crimes in Sudetes based on statement, that we should bear responsibility for historical acts of our ancestors/nationals. But I think, this statement is quite problematic. Let‘s make some other (more concrete/less abstract) statements and try to find out if we agree or disagree with them.
Teď by se tu mohla postupně objevovat jednotlivá tvrzení (asi by jich nemělo být víc než třeba pět, řekla bych, že spíš míň). Lidi můžeme nechat hlasovat (to by mělo jít – včetně možnosti nevím), případně z nich vytáhout nějaké argumenty.
II. If we say that the first statement it‘s right, we should agree with the second statement either. To illustrate this, look at the example: If I was adult now, my grandfather could be adult at the end of the WW II. Maybe he could beat or rob or kill some Germans living in Sudety in time of the „wild“ expulsion. Would you feel the guilt and assume responsibility for it (if you were me)? (Please put up your hands if …)
I personally don‘t agree with this.
III. But I (personally) can say that if I had the grandfather from previous example, I would be shamed of his „crimes“ more than of crimes of some other Czech or German people. Do you think it is important if some crimes in the history were committed by your ancestors or not? Put your hands up if…
But let‘s imagine that my (imaginary) grandfather beat and rob some Sudeten family and steal their house. He used it as a cottage and we have been using it as cottage to today. What‘s now? That was not my fault, that the house was stolen but I use it – I benefit from some historical crime! Should I do something with this?
What do you think? Do you agree? Put up your hands…
I don‘t know if I am responsible or not. But I think it is right to respond to history, especially if there were something wrong and we are connected with it in some way. Maybe this stance can be considered as historical responsibility too. So the question is: How?
