LOCATION of thiscity
The city is floating on the sea because
there is not much empty land
available on earth. Furthermore, it will
have access to underwater resources
such as oil and gas.
Recently, global warming has been on the rise
and the melting of ice at the poles is getting
worse which causes water levels on the earth
to rise. This causes flooding to happen in
many parts of the world. Hence, to prevent
further damage caused by floods, the logical
solution is to build a city which is eco-friendly
and able to withstand additional forces and
extreme water levels caused by flooding.
NAME & SHAPE of thiscity
The name of this city is
inspired by the word nautical.
Nautical means of or relating to
sailors or ships. The reason
why I use this shape is because
it is aerodynamic which is able
to withstand the destructive
force produced by the tides
and reduce flow of water into
the city.
ZONING
There are a total of 11 zones in my city. They are the forest and green area, industrial
area, port and shipping area, agriculture area, hospitality and tourism area, recreational
area, residential area, commercial and business area, transport area, education,
religious and cultural area and government area.
FOREST AND GREEN AREA
It is a large area comprising of forest reserves, mountains, botanical gardens, a bird park, a butterfly
park and a zoo. Family and friends can come to these areas to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
This green lung also acts as the water catchment area of the city to prevent floods. Scientists and
environmentalists can come to this retreat to do their research.
INDUSTRIAL AREA
This zone is where waste management, water management, recycling and electricity generation are
practised. Wind and wave energy harvesting are implemented to produce electricity. A few
hydropower stations are built by the shore to produce electricity. Manufacturing companies and
factories are built in this area to utilize the availability of the source of energy as well as to prevent
air pollution in the residential areas.
AGRICULTURE AREA
There are many different farms situated in this area to produce organic food for the residents of the
city. Organic food is produced using natural fertilizers and without using pesticides. Crop rotation is
practised on this land to maintain the various nutrients of the soil. Free range livestock is reared here
too.
HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM AREA
Tourist landmarks are located here to improve the economical growth of the city. This would provide
job opportunities for the citizens.
PORT AND SHIPPING AREA
This area functions to collect goods from all around the world. It also exports local products to
different parts of the world. Ferry services are also provided at the ports.
High quality facilities are provided in this area to ensure that the citizens can exercise at ease.
Children can play and run to have fun in the recreation area.
RESIDENTIAL AREA
The residential area is where the citizens eat, play and sleep. There are three different types of
houses in this city namely the floating house, stilt house, condominiums and apartments. Green roofs
are built above each and every house to reduce heat from entering the house.
RECREATIONAL AREA
COMMERCIAL AND BUSINESSAREA
In this area, there are businesses ranging from single ownership business to international companies.
Many services are provided in this area for example hospitals, post office, banks, shopping malls and
others.
GOVERNMENT AREA
Government administration buildings, courts, fire services, hospitals and parliament are situated in
this area. The general public will come to this area to obtain approvals, pay their dues as well as play
their role as responsible citizens.
EDUCATION, RELIGIOUSAND CULTURAL AREA
Education is important in forming a civilized and educated citizenry. Hence, education is provided by
the government free for all citizens, from the kindergarten to tertiary education. Religious buildings
such as churches, mosques and temples are built in this area in order to promote spiritual growth.
Museums and performing arts centres are located here.
TRANSPORT
People can walk, cycle, drive or take public transportation to their destinations. Pavements enable
pedestrians to walk and trees with outstretch bough are also grown along the road to provide natural
shade. A bicycle sharing system will be implemented throughout the city where public bikes will be
provided to encourage healthy living.
NEW INITIA TIVES A ND
TECHNOLOGIES
1. Sensor-operated sea defensewalls
Sensor-operated sea defense walls are installed
along the coast and can extend as high as 10m. It
can withstand the impact of high-velocity waves.
2. Waterproofed house
As the city is prone to floods, the materials used to
build houses will be certified waterproof and
electrical outlets will be encased to protect them.
This ensures that the house will not be badly
damaged during floods.
3. Floatinghouse
Floating houses are built using the cherry flood
resistant concept. The method of construction
allows for sealed buoyancy compartments. This
technology will keep the house afloat with a
high degree of stability. After a flood, the
house can be re-sited.
4. SMART tunnel mechanism
On the major roads in this city, the SMART tunnel
system is implemented so that it would be able
to divert large volumes of flood water from the
city via a holding pond, bypass tunnel and
storage reservoir.
5. Solar Powered Transportation
Solar powered vehicles are used in this city
to maintain a green environment.
6. Eco-friendly Items
Light-emitting diode (LED) lights are used for
street lights to save energy. Recyclable and
reusable items such as canvas bags, paper
bags and others are used widely in this city.
7. High Security
Advanced technology systems for security
purposes such as fingerprint scanners, iris
scanning, lasers, smart cards, closed circuit
televisions (CCTV) and other gadgets are
used to prevent unauthorized people from
gaining access into houses or offices and
crimes.
8. Sensor operated pedestrian crossings
Pedestrian crossings are furnished with
walkalators to enable citizens especially the
elderly and school children to cross main
roads safely.
