2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
Raster graphics is images imported from the
internet or for example or if you scan a picture
onto your computer that’s raster graphics.
Raster file can sometimes be referred to as a
bitmap because it contains information that is
directly mapped to the display grid. A raster file
is also larger than a vector file.
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
Vector graphics are images imported from the
internet but they don’t lose their definition. Unlike
Raster graphics, no matter how many times you
open the vector file it will not lose it’s loss. They
also have a start and an end point and they are
made out of vectors/paths which means they are
perfect for business cards because no matter what
size the file it, the definition will not be lost.
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example Copying images from facebook, internet,
twitter etc.
Advantage -Easy to upload and see.
-A JPEG file only takes up a small space.
-JPEG is also supported by every single
digital camera and any video camcorder
that can also take pictures.
Disadvantage -Loses the quality once the picture is
edited.
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example If you want to transfer pictures from a
camera to your computer so you can edit
them, you can save them as tiffs then you
can easily access them through
Photoshop.
Advantage -You can create as many files as you want.
E.g. you could plan a whole book.
-The file never loses the quality
-Easy to edit.
Disadvantage -Tiffs are not read by most devices.
-Most devices wont open a Tiff file.
7. GIF
Stands For Graphic Interchange Format
Used For/Example To create a very short digital animation,
usually on websites like Tumblr.
Advantage -Not difficult at all
-A GIF file is a lot smaller than a normal
video
-Its also easier to upload a GIF than Video.
Disadvantage -they only have up to 256 colour palette of
which can sometimes mean the gifs will
have a poorer quality than other types of
files.
-Once the GIF is created you cant go back
and edit it.
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap Image File
Used For/Example Bitmap is a raster image format used to
store and display colour and grayscale
images.
Advantage -Bitmap files may be easily created from
existing data.
-Bitmap files may translate well to dot-format
output devices such as printers.
Disadvantage -BMP files cannot be used for transferring
images from the Internet or other slow or
capacity-limited such as twitter or any
other website/media because they are too
large.
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example Usually used to create the front cover of a
magazine.
Advantage -PSD files can handle simple vector layers
which makes them more suitable for
importing and exporting data from
programs like Adobe Illustrator.
-PSD works well to store large detailed
images for printing or editing, including
images with layers.
Disadvantage -Not many devices can open a PSD file.
-PSD are harder to difficult to email.
-The internet cant read any PSD files.
-Usually PSD files are only recognised by
Photoshop software which wont be much
help if you were doing a full cover for a
magazine.
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator
Used For/Example Used to create logos to represent a
company.
Advantage -Can be shrunk or enlarged to what ever
size due to how the vectors don’t lose
definition.
-lossless of quality no matter how big the
art gets or how small.
Disadvantage -Transparency can be complicated if you
don't practice
12. FLA
Stands For Flash File
Used For/Example Used to create animation and games.
Advantage -Can include sound and video.
-Can produce high quality files with a small
file size.
-The animation is so visual, so viewers will
quite often get the gist of your message
without having to read any written
content.
Disadvantage -
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example WMF is similar to AL files, they are used
for logos as well.
Advantage -Can be scaled to any size.
-Can contain both vectors and bitmaps
components.
-Metafiles can be resized easily which
normally accompanies resizing of bitmaps.
Disadvantage -Nothing can be read from a
metafile. Functions such as Draw Text, Get
Text Metrics, Get Text Extent and others
cannot work with metafiles.
-The Bitmaps used in metafiles will suffer
all the disadvantages of resized bitmaps
when the metafile which contains these
bitmaps get resized.
15. Compression
Definition The goal of compression is to reduce file
size and save disk space.
Advantage -When a file is compressed, it takes up so
much less disk space than the
uncompressed version and therefor it can
be transferred to other systems quicker.
-If your computer is running low on data
space, then compressing your files is the
best thing to do.
Disadvantage -The resulting file may be larger if you had
used a lossy compression format to start
with.
-It can be complicated to use
-It needs to compress all the previous and
it can crash.
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A scanner is able to scan and capture text,
imagery and objects and then turn them into a
digital image which can be transferred onto
your computer.
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Digital Cameras are capable of image capture, a camera is
more transportable due down to the fact that a Digital
Camera is able to capture images of everyday life
compared to the Scanner which requires invariably a flat
document. Cameras also capture the image and then
present the image straight away on the camera
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
Graphic tablets may also be used to capture
images or handwritten signatures. The image
then gets displayed on the computer monitor
the tablet is connected to.
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? To make an image clearer and
compressed.
How can you optimise? You can resize, compress and optimise your
image files through online websites such
www.imageoptimizer.net/ or through other
programmes such RIOT.
Advantage to optimising -Its easy to optimise an image.
-You can make your file as small as
possible.
-You can compare the original image with
the optimized image.
Disadvantage to optimising -If your browser resize a large image to
look smaller it will lose all the decent
quality.
