Christopher Columbus
Cristoforo Colombo, or Christopher Columbus as we call him, was born
in Genoa in Italy. The Columbus family hoped to get rich by trade. Columbus
went to sea at the age of 13. He hoped to come home a rich man! Life at sea
was exciting, but dangerous.
People in Europe wanted to find a new sea route east, to trade with Asia.
They wanted to send ships to India, China and the East Indies. The Portuguese
tried sailing South, around Africa. It was a long way.
Columbus wanted to sail west. Because maps of the time made the oceans
look smaller than they were, Columbus hoped to reach China in a few days.
Columbus needed money to make his dream come true. He tried to ask
rich people to help him. Most laughed at him.
At last, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave him money for
ships. In return he promised to bring them new lands, gold and new people to
rule. In 1492, Columbus's first journey began.

The voyage took longer than Columbus had expected. There was no land,
and the sailors got scared. They had little food and fresh water. After 36 days, a
sailor saw an island. On 12 October 1492 Columbus and his sailors went
ashore. Columbus called the island San Salvador. It was in the Bahamas. The
local people lived in villages and grew corn and cotton. The people were
friendly and open toward the Spanish. Columbus captured their land for Spain
and brought back several local people with him as prisoners to the King of
Spain.
Columbus did not 'discover' America. There were many people already
living there. The first European people to land in America were the Vikings.
Columbus did not know that. But his voyage started regular contact between
America and Europe.
Columbus and his sailors sailed bravely into the unknown. Columbus did
not give up, even when people laughed at his ideas.
Young Columbus went to sea because
1) he wanted to have a lot of money
2) he wanted to study trade
3) he liked adventures
Columbus decided to sail west because
1) he thought China was in the west
2) his maps showed that the oceans were small
3) he knew a short way to Africa
Columbus got money from
1) rich people
2) Spanish monarchs
3) his sailors
What is TRUE about the journey?
1) It lasted more than thirty days.
2) The local people in the Bahamas were aggressive.
3) The sailors discovered a new continent.
People remember Columbus because
1) he was the first European to land in America
2) he learnt a lot of things about the Vikings
3) he was a brave sailor

The Columbus family hoped to get rich by trade. Columbus went to sea at the age of 13. He hoped to come home a rich man! Life at sea was exciting, but dangerous. People in Europe wanted to find a new sea route east, to trade with Asia. They wanted to send ships to India, China and the East Indies. The Portuguese tried sailing South, around Africa. It was a long way. Columbus wanted to sail west. Because maps of the time made the oceans look smaller than they were, Columbus hoped to reach China in a few days. Columbus needed money to make his dream come true. He tried to ask rich people to help him. Most laughed at him. At last, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain gave him money for ships. In return he promised to bring them new lands, gold and new people to rule. In 1492, Columbus's first journey began. 1 2 3 4 5 The voyage took longer than Columbus had expected. There was no land, and the sailors got scared. They had little food and fresh water. After 36 days, a sailor saw an island. On 12 October 1492 Columbus and his sailors went ashore. Columbus called the island San Salvador. It was in the Bahamas. The local people lived in villages and grew corn and cotton. The people were friendly and open toward the Spanish. Columbus captured their land for Spain and brought back several local people with him as prisoners to the King of Spain. Columbus did not 'discover' America. There were many people already living there. The first European people to land in America were the Vikings. Columbus did not know that. But his voyage started regular contact between America and Europe. Columbus and his sailors sailed bravely into the unknown. Columbus did not give up, even when people laughed at his ideas. Young Columbus went to sea because 1) he wanted to have a lot of money 2) he wanted to study trade 3) he liked adventures Columbus decided to sail west because 1) he thought China was in the west 2) his maps showed that the oceans were small 3) he knew a short way to Africa Columbus got money from 1) rich people 2) Spanish monarchs 3) his sailors What is TRUE about the journey? 1) It lasted more than thirty days. 2) The local people in the Bahamas were aggressive. 3) The sailors discovered a new continent.
