Charles Miller and Football in Brazil
Everybody knows that Brazilians love football very much. But how did
football come to this country? The story began at the end of the nineteenth
century. An Englishman who lived in Brazil sent his son across the Atlantic
ocean to study in England. Charles Miller went to school, then to university,
where he was interested in all aspects of life. Sport was one of them.
A hundred years ago, different kinds of sports were popular in Britain.
During his English years, Charles became especially keen on football (people
in Britain call it soccer), and when in 1894 he packed his bags to return to his
family in Brazil, among the things he took with him were two footballs.
Back in Brazil, he tried to get other people interested in the game. At first
he had little success; the only people who showed any interest were other Brits
who lived in Brazil. That is why the first game of football in Brazil was
between two teams of young Englishmen. They played on a field which was a
pasture for goats.
Charles asked some journalists to come and see this new English game,
but they did not come and said that they did not want to write about a crazy
English sport.
But as the weeks went past, Brazilians who lived in nearby houses paid
attention to the twenty-two young English boys running round after a ball.

Soon, young local men began kicking balls round too. But they did not use real
balls. At that time only Charles Miller had balls. The first Brazilian football
players had to make their own balls. There was a lot of enthusiasm for the new
game, and football became the great attraction in some parts of Sao Paolo, a
city in the southeastern part of Brazil.
By 1901, there was already a league of clubs in Sao Paolo, and the
journalists wrote many articles about the new game. That is how Charles Miller
became a very famous person because he was the father of Brazilian football.
