The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) are the first of a series of competitions in high
school mathematics that determine the United States team for the International Mathematical
Olympiad (IMO). The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are nation-wide tests administered by the
Mathematical Association of America that qualify you for the American International
Mathematics Exam.

4. 3 levels of American Mathematics Competitions
1. AMC 8 is for students in grades 8 and below
2. AMC 10 is for students in grades 10 and below
3. AMC 12 is for students in grades 12 and below

5. AMC 10 & AMC 12 Exam
AMC 10 and AMC 12 consist of 5 questions.
Total exam time will be 75 minutes.
Each correct answer is worth 6 points (for a maximum score of 150).
Each unanswered question is worth 1.5 points. There is no deduction for wrong answers.

6. AMC mathematics Syllabus
AMC 10 covers mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10,
Elementary algebra,
Basic geometry knowledge including the Pythagorean Theorem, area and volume formulas,
Elementary number theory,
Elementary probability,
High school mathematics curriculum,
Advanced algebra, geometry and pre-calculus.

8. How To prepare for AMC
• Cover pre-calculus topics first as math competition problems will be trickier than what you
see on your usual math homework assignments. AMC 12 covers the entire high school
mathematics curriculum as well as trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry
but excludes calculus.
• For saving time it is best to join classes or take best Counselor for Education Abroad as they
advice on the best prep books, and forums.

9. How To prepare for AMC
• Time Management keep track of problems you didn’t know how to solve or concepts you’re
shaky on.
• By practicing at least once a week, you will retain all of the skills you learn and continue to
build on your knowledge.
