Satirical Essay
Satirical Essay Rough Copy Recently, cigarettes have been getting a bad rap. No one seems to
understand that the real problem at hand is not the negative effects of smoking cigarettes, but those
who abstain from smoking cigarettes. These people are nothing but a nuisance, a lousy bunch of
no–gooders that just want to ruin your fun. In fact, smoking cigarettes is an activity that the entire
population can benefit from. The world relies on the production and consumption of tobacco, and
there are many positives of smoking that outweigh the negatives. For example, smokers dedicate a
large portion of their life buying packs upon packs of cigarettes, which in turn gives a huge profit to
the country. Surely if you consider yourself a...show more content...
Without the common smoker, who will buy things like teeth whitener and bad breathe killing gum?
Surely coffee drinkers can't bare that burden alone. With the increase of cigarette smoking, not only
will the sales of them help the economy, but so will the increase of jobs in manufacturing, tobacco
farming, and many other great career paths.
Now, onto the topic of the supposed "life threatening" risks of smoking cigarettes that people
have been so vocal about. People that smoke aren't oblivious to these risks; they're clearly printed
on the front of every pack. If a smoker isn't going to listen to all of these scientific sources, what
makes them think they would listen to you? The truth is, most smokers know that smoking is
killing them, and they should accept this fact willingly. Smokers get to experience the wondrous
effects of cigarettes throughout their lifetime, and won't have to live until they're inevitable
senility. Smokers know that living until they're old is pointless, because when you're old you lose
even more relevancy than you had when you were young. Pick up smoking and die early, so that
you can preserve your dignity instead of being laughed at as a feeble old man/woman.
Furthermore, the world is overpopulated as it is; what's a few lives taken from cancer here and
there going to do? If anything, it will help keep the population in check.
Everyone who's anyone in the history of the world has smoked. For

Environmental Satire Essay
Environment Satire It has come to my attention that our nation is in the middle of earthweek. At a
time when we all stop, as Americans, and take a look at all of the great accomplishments we have
made that we could have possibly overlooked while running around with our busy schedules. We
recognize our efforts to create powerful industries and production plants that produce endless
chemical compounds and new materials. The discovery and use of fossil fuels, of which has fed
our automobiles and at times added a protective coating to our shores and beaches. The men and
women who clear the land and provide the materials for our homes. And what about electricity? The
greatest discovery of all time. We must not forget about the men...show more content...
I think I speak for many people when I say that I can’t wait for the day when it finally
warms up around here. While being an Oregon resident has it’s advantages, it just seems to
lack in the sunshine department, and what a better way to brighten up any day than with 200 degree
weather. No more wasting snow days at school, no more long sleeved shirts, and finally an end to all
that SPF mumbo jumbo. You know that without an O–zone layer there’s going to be nothing
strong enough on the market to protect our delicate skin. They’ll probably have some
kind of pill I can take instead. Even if some of the polar ice caps do melt, that just means more
beaches for us on our new glorious days of sunshine. So what if a few million people drown? I
suppose earthweek is just another form of the government keeping us down. We have become far
too brainwashed when we start to feel guilty for living the life of careless slobs. Though, one week
out of the year isn’t too bad to have to plant a tree or recycle your plastics. It is the ones who
spend their time and money developing new, safer techniques to ensure the health of our planet that
need our help the most. They just don’t seem to understand the detrimental importance of
self consciousness. We as citizens, as Americans, as human beings must take it upon ourselves to
clear up any confusion and set these poor wasteful droids into the right direction.

Year 11 English Satire Essay
I am profoundly sorry to hear about you're concern as a parent. Ms Vogt has informed me of the
complaint, and I understand that you may be distraught and troubled about the use of the
"mockumentary", Summer Heights High within your child's classroom. You may feel that your
child may be influenced by some of the actions within the piece, but there is nothing to worry
about at all! Everything is under control and we know what is best! As part of the year 11 English
curriculum, all English classes are exploring the use of satire around the world. We are showing
this show not to sit around and laugh as you waste valuable money, but as a class point out the
problems that withstand in the film and talk about why people can find these typed of series so
enjoyable!
First of all, I want to introduce you to the series. Summer Heights High...show more content...
We will be learning how satirical text can be used to entertain an audience and how aspects of
satire such as irony and exaggeration can be used to entertain a large audience! Another key reason
is so that your child is aware of what happens and why they treat other people that are different to
them in series such as Summer Heights High. In a perfect school everyone is treated equally and no
one is abused and offended, so learning about Summer Heights High can be used as a guide on
what not to do, so your child becomes more respectful and humble of where he is. Furthermore, we
learn about the type of satire on whether it is Horatian or Juvenalian and what this means.
Additionally, how satire can be used to show different personalities of characters within a public
school. From this, we look at the stylistic features of the characters which includes looks, clothing,
physical appearance, and attitude. These stylistic features give meaning and feeling to what is being
shown. Do you really want your child to miss out on deep meaningful learning such as

Reflective Essay: For A Satire
For a laugh, really. I feel like the author wanted to put out something new and exciting with
situations that were very realistic whilst being comedic. I personally think that this book series was
intended for an older audience. It's pretty satirical with humor that would appeal to someone looking
back on middle school as opposed to someone experiencing it at that time.

The drug abuse is the most serious issue not only in United States but other parts of the world too.
The statistic has shown that 24.4million of American including teens from age of 12, had used an

United States nowadays, have misused the usage of drugs by consuming them without
recommendation or supervision from the expert. People use drugs as a solution to reduce stress, to
relieve the boredom, for enjoyment and also to forget all the dilemmas they have. Besides, drug also
can act as an energy booster. For example, when students take drugs, they able to stay up all night
to study and complete all of their assignments while for athletes they able to perform well during
the competition and at the same time to stay fit. Sometimes, people use drugs as they are curious
how the taste of drugs is and want to experiment the feeling of drugs. They think by taking drug

Satire : Humor And Satire
Humour and satire are two concepts that are both wide ranging and diverse, from dark, to light
hearted, with each producing a different effect. Humour in the main, is something that is used to
please the audience, its function is to invoke laughter amongst its audience. Satire is used to create a
comical critical view of the subject at hand, this can range from a light hearted comical way, to a
judgemental way, with each style giving the text a different meaning, however this does not mean that
satire cannot be humorous, which can evident in the use of parody and irony within texts. Within
literature both concepts play an important role to how the text is viewed, humour can include word
play, grammatical jokes, to even inside jokes with the author and reader, and with satire, including
that of irony and parody, with each style and type delivering humour in its own unique way. These
differing styles of humour can be found in a variety of forms including Jasper Forde's The Eyre Affair
(2001), with its silly atmosphere, word play and grammar jokes, and the use of light hearted satire
and parody to brighten up the text, and Julian Barnes A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters
(1989), where there is a more serious atmosphere, with a more critical, satirical eye on history and
characters, as well as using irony to achieve its comical effect, and the position of the world. Each
text is humorous and satirical in its own right, and with each author using different techniques to

simply "un–teachable" and are a waste of time and space, overcrowding the school and ruining its

Judging by how many students are unwilling to take school seriously, there will never be a

economy will certainly benefit from this mass–production and the US will be recognized as one of
the most prestigious and prosperous nations in the world, producing some of the most brilliant,
top–notch scholars. This solution will provide a higher–quality education for the rest of the students
in the future. As contrast to what could be, here is an example. Last year I attended an English
class here at Arroyo full of students who'd given up on learning, preferring to fool around during
class. The teacher had simply given up on "us" (or the troublesome ones), the class was rowdy, out

class uninterrupted without having to waste class time rebuking those annoying twerps. With this
proposal in effect, class sizes would be smaller and there would be less disruption so teachers would
have more one–on–one time helping students worthy of their time. The learning environment/peer
influence would improve, resulting in better performance, even the school's standards would be set

Analysis of A Modest Proposal
Jonathan Swift, the writer of the satirical essay A Modest Proposal, grew up and lived in Ireland
during times of famine and economic struggles (Conditions). Growing up with a single mother and
no father, Swift knew what hard times and struggles were like (Jonathan Swift: Biography). His
essay proposes an easy solution to the economic problems going on in Ireland for both the wealthy
ruling classes and the poorer classes, although his intentions and the meaning behind his words are
not what would be originally thought when initially reading the essay. Through his word choices and
the description of specific events of his time, Swift uses satire to grab his audience's attention and get
his own personal ideas and opinions out about all the...show more content...
"I rather recommend buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do
roasting pigs" (A Modest Proposal). Comparing the children to roasting a pig shows that the
children do not mean that much to anyone and they can just be burned alive and no one would
care. He also uses the word "flesh" generally to refer to the children when they're being served and
eaten which is an animalistic association (A Modest Proposal). Usually human children would not
be referred to as "flesh" or "pigs" at all. This, again, reflects upon how England and the Irish ruling
classes treated the people of Ireland, especially the less fortunate. Other words Swift has a
tendency of using are "breeders", "males", and "females" (A Modest Proposal). It's not common
to hear these words in regard to a human being especially coming from a priest. More directly
with his wording, Swift speaks of the landlords in a negative manner. "I grant this food will be
somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most
of the parents..." (A Modest Proposal). This statement shows the way the English landlords would
take every penny their tenants had. England and Ireland's wealthy class did not care for their
people what so ever, and Swift's satire was very effective in proving these points. Most of Swift's
essays were much less acknowledged than his fictional works such as

Christopher Morley On Laziness Analysis
With social media such as Twitter or Instagram, people have learned how to deliver the same
message without using so many words. Technology users incorporate shortcuts such as "LOL" and
"SMH" into their texts and social media posts, thus proving that people can still make a strong
impact despite doing less work. In his satirical essay "On Laziness," Christopher Morley employs
advanced diction and short sentence structure to disprove the popular idea that one cannot
accomplish as much being lazy. Morley intentionally chooses words that are not only concise but
also elevated. This conciseness allows him to deliver the same message while still maintaining a
sophisticated tone. Morley elaborates in his essay "Henceforward we are going to...show more

His short sentence structure asserts control on his writing. It allows him to direct the flow of his
essay in the manner he wants it. When explaining the importance of laziness, Morley elucidates it
as "Philosophical laziness, we mean. The kind of laziness that is based upon a carefully reasoned
analysis of experience. Acquired laziness"(33–35). Through the abrupt use of "acquired laziness,"
Morley successfully switches the subject of the paragraph without having to write a smooth
transition from one term to the next, while still able to fully explain his previous points. By
enforcing this control with minimal effort, the author once again proves that he can accomplish
writing a reputable essay while simultaneously being lazy. In addition, the frequent use of shorter
sentences enables him to be more critical. Morley can critique those who are against laziness and
not use elaboration to soften those critiques. Later in the essay, he advises readers to "Mind your
business...but mind your idleness also. It's a tragic thing to make a business of your mind. Save
your mind to amuse yourself with"(Morley 76–79). Morley's short directions are helpful while at the
same time demeaning to those who "make a business of their minds."He makes himself an
authoritative figure without heavy word use, therefore strengthening his

Satirical Essay On Social Media
There has been a serious problem that has risen over the past few years with teens and social media.
Due to the creation of iPhones, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and whatever other technology they are
spending ridiculous amounts of time on, their generation is soon going to be filled with children
who are a number of things, such as, restless, robotic, obese, uneducated, and even antisocial. As a
high school teacher, I have recently noticed a drastic drop in many of my student's grades and I
could not for the life of me find out why. At first, I thought It may have had something to do with
my teaching skills which made me so concerned that I even went to other teachers for advice.
After weeks passed and student's grades kept falling, I got really down on myself and every night
I would have an emotional breakdown on my husband. Then finally, I came to the realization it
had nothing to do with my teaching job, it was actually because the students who are making poor
grades are so emotionally consumed in their small pixel screen, even while in class. Recently a
survey was done by researchers to get an overview on how often teens "have to" check their social

much teens are actually consumed in social media. Also, to appeal to emotion I used words such as,
antisocial, obese, slugs, emotional breakdown, and my heart aches to create an emotional response.
In doing so it helped me convince my audience of my

"A Modest Proposal" is a social commentary written by Jonathan Swift, he uses techniques such as
irony, satire, and sarcasm to mock the Irish government of his time. After reading Swift's essay half
way through, one might not believe how graphic and shocking it's been written. He wrote a letter
suggesting they sell the children of the poor to the wealthy families, as this will provide food,
clothing, and will decrease the population. Throughout the letter he uses remarkable details as to
how they should go about eating the children, treating them as livestock. The letter ends with a
completely different tone when the author explains the absurdity of his proposal and instead
suggests something a bit more realistic and humane like the wealthy should give up some of their
luxuries. He uses a lot of thorough, literalized metaphors, and ironic and sarcasm techniques to a
devastating effect. A Modest Proposal has been judged as an excellent work of rhetorical brilliancy,
and it acquires readers critical attention up until now Swift exposes all the bizarre remarks and
ideas he has been discussing about are all a humorous way to make fun of the way the government
is run and how they are not serving their country. Afterwards he expresses a proper proposal of
taking away some of the wealthier people's luxuries in order to help their economy. this essay

Satire Essay On Alcohol And Drugs
Drugs and alcohol are a topic coming out of every American's mouth. They are a household topic.
Many people know the dangers and trouble that alcohol and drugs bring, yet it is what most people
spend their money on. When you ask them about why they do drugs and alcohol, they reply that
they like the feeling it gives you. The feeling that lasts 1–2 hours? Maybe you want to give up the
amazing life God has gifted you with, but I don't want to do that. I know that there will be times
when I will be pressured into doing drugs, or drinking alcohol. But I know what they do, and I will
stay strong and will not fall into that world. Another aspect I will look at alcohol and drugs with is
the aspect of religion. My religion tells me that drugs and alcohol are bad.
Drugs and alcohol will put me in a state of depression which will harm me. Alcohol and drugs go
against my moral principles and my ethics. I simply know that alcohol and drugs are wrong. I know
that they will hurt me. They will destroy me from the inside and from the outside. I will lose
everything I love in life. Along with it hurting me, they will hurt people around me. If I drink
alcohol and drive, I will be putting every single other driver around me at risk....show more content...

will fix this. After the drugs and alcohol, they are back in this state of crisis. They get that amazing
feeling for 1–2 hours, then they have to worry about what they did while in that state. Teens who
suffer from too much alcohol or usage of drugs started out as teens who said it would only be one
time. That one time changes your whole life. That one time changes who you become. That one
time changes how the world sees you. That one time could end you. Drugs and alcohol will end my
life. They will end me. That is why I will never try that one first

Jonathan Swift, in his essay "A Modest Proposal", effectively utilizes an extended metaphor in
order to convey his message that we must take action against widespread poverty. The satirical
point employed suggests that poor children be eaten in order to decrease the surplus population,
and is efficacious due to the fact that in such a terrible state of affairs, cannibalism can be
logically defended as a viable solution. Swift's essay, written in 1729, clearly precedes the
existing social programs in effect throughout much of the first world. However, the ominous reality
is that Swift's essay can just as effectively be used as a comparison, albeit a figurative one, to
modern day society, if our current welfare spending continues. Implicit within Swift's essay is a call
for radical change to the inaction towards the poor that existed in his 18th century society. Though
his call was thoroughly addressed by nearly every global government, the poor class has not shrunk
in any way due to this, and in fact, government assistance has only worsened the problem. One must
only examine the nature of the welfare state to see the oppression inherent within it. By definition,
the welfare state is a means of giving assistance to those who do not produce an arbitrary amount of
recorded capital for themselves. There is absolutely no encouragement to work, no obligation for
productivity. Rather, the Heritage Foundation reported that only two of 80 tested welfare programs

Satirical Analysis Of Teenage Pregnancy
ANALYSIS
Form
The form I have chosen to use in order to depict my satirical piece about teenage pregnancy is that
of a Teen Vogue magazine. I chose this form due to the fact that it is a well
–known magazine for
teenagers. I also chose this due to the fact that Teen Vogue and many other women's magazines
comprise of stereotypical, unrealistic, naГЇve and irrational content aimed towards female that can
be, in a sense, highly demeaning.
Context
There are two contexts within my satirical piece. The first is in relation to the increasing occurrence
of teenage pregnancy in Australia. The second is in relation to the constant horrid behaviour certain
women have that jeopardise the baby's health at birth which could lead to premature birth. This

I did this to highlight the inconceivable and preposterous attitudes teenagers currently have when

crush" therefore I used "Guide to taking care of yourself as a preggo teen". This was done to
completely ridicule the pregnant teen and also to ridicule a magazine that basically attempts to
dictate how a "typical" teenager should be.
I believe that my satirical piece is primarily Horatian as it continuously ridicules the way pregnant
teenagers handle themselves during their pregnancy. It always states all the completely ridiculous
activities that are done by a vast majority of pregnant teenagers nowadays that will affect the
pregnancy in a harsh manner. It also pokes at the way Teen Vogue use their element of
persuasiveness to encourage teens to follow their "guides". In retrospect, the piece is also quite
Juvenalian as it highlights the seriousness of mistreating a pregnancy in a comedic and sarcastic

Welcome, everyone to my session of the current affairs week conference.
Today I will be analyzing an Australian Political cartoon targeting a current issue– Tony Abbott and
his Asylum seeker policy
I have chosen a relevant cartoon by Cathy Wilcox, published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the

explore the satirical elements used by Wilcox to persuade the readers of her perspective. Finishing
with an evaluation of the cartoons effectiveness.

asylum seekers arriving by boat to Australia. Wilcox tries to convey Abbott's...show more content...
Secondly, Wilcox uses incongruity through visual elements to further her views. Incongruity is most
evident when focusing on the man selling lottery tickets to the refugees, with the prize being

symbols used enhance the cartoon's incongruity. The ticket seller's immensely large grin suggests
there is more to this lottery offer than meets the eye, alongside his remark "Get your lottery tickets

the price of a lottery ticket though the ellipses imply that a greater cost is involved. They are
gambling with money as well as taking big risks with their lives with no guarantee of safely

disparity forces them to take these risks. Finally, to the effectiveness of this cartoon.
Overall the cartoon is very effective. It is eye–catching and it's use of parody and incongruities in

It successfully reveals Abbott's genuine double–sided views on overseas refugees and orphans whilst

Humans are naturally ignorant, especially when they do not want to see harsh realities. The most
common truth that humans try to avoid acknowledging is inequality, generally caused by those with
privilege, trying to separate themselves from those who are unprivileged. Privilege is most
commonly caused by skin color, financial status, and religious beliefs, as unfortunate as these ideas
are. In Jonathan Swift's essay "A Modest Proposal," Swift uses irony, hyperbole, and sarcasm to
ridicule the detrimental effects of oppression and discrimination in society.
Jonathan Swift portrays induced inequalities in Ireland through the use of satire in his essay 'A
Modest Proposal.' The rich and the Catholics treated the poor and the Protestants unfairly

Satirical Essays On Texting

  • 1. Satirical Essay Satirical Essay Rough Copy Recently, cigarettes have been getting a bad rap. No one seems to understand that the real problem at hand is not the negative effects of smoking cigarettes, but those who abstain from smoking cigarettes. These people are nothing but a nuisance, a lousy bunch of no–gooders that just want to ruin your fun. In fact, smoking cigarettes is an activity that the entire population can benefit from. The world relies on the production and consumption of tobacco, and there are many positives of smoking that outweigh the negatives. For example, smokers dedicate a large portion of their life buying packs upon packs of cigarettes, which in turn gives a huge profit to the country. Surely if you consider yourself a...show more content... Without the common smoker, who will buy things like teeth whitener and bad breathe killing gum? Surely coffee drinkers can't bare that burden alone. With the increase of cigarette smoking, not only will the sales of them help the economy, but so will the increase of jobs in manufacturing, tobacco farming, and many other great career paths. Now, onto the topic of the supposed "life threatening" risks of smoking cigarettes that people have been so vocal about. People that smoke aren't oblivious to these risks; they're clearly printed on the front of every pack. If a smoker isn't going to listen to all of these scientific sources, what makes them think they would listen to you? The truth is, most smokers know that smoking is killing them, and they should accept this fact willingly. Smokers get to experience the wondrous effects of cigarettes throughout their lifetime, and won't have to live until they're inevitable senility. Smokers know that living until they're old is pointless, because when you're old you lose even more relevancy than you had when you were young. Pick up smoking and die early, so that you can preserve your dignity instead of being laughed at as a feeble old man/woman. Furthermore, the world is overpopulated as it is; what's a few lives taken from cancer here and there going to do? If anything, it will help keep the population in check. Everyone who's anyone in the history of the world has smoked. For Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Environmental Satire Essay Environment Satire It has come to my attention that our nation is in the middle of earthweek. At a time when we all stop, as Americans, and take a look at all of the great accomplishments we have made that we could have possibly overlooked while running around with our busy schedules. We recognize our efforts to create powerful industries and production plants that produce endless chemical compounds and new materials. The discovery and use of fossil fuels, of which has fed our automobiles and at times added a protective coating to our shores and beaches. The men and women who clear the land and provide the materials for our homes. And what about electricity? The greatest discovery of all time. We must not forget about the men...show more content... I think I speak for many people when I say that I can’t wait for the day when it finally warms up around here. While being an Oregon resident has it’s advantages, it just seems to lack in the sunshine department, and what a better way to brighten up any day than with 200 degree weather. No more wasting snow days at school, no more long sleeved shirts, and finally an end to all that SPF mumbo jumbo. You know that without an O–zone layer there’s going to be nothing strong enough on the market to protect our delicate skin. They’ll probably have some kind of pill I can take instead. Even if some of the polar ice caps do melt, that just means more beaches for us on our new glorious days of sunshine. So what if a few million people drown? I suppose earthweek is just another form of the government keeping us down. We have become far too brainwashed when we start to feel guilty for living the life of careless slobs. Though, one week out of the year isn’t too bad to have to plant a tree or recycle your plastics. It is the ones who spend their time and money developing new, safer techniques to ensure the health of our planet that need our help the most. They just don’t seem to understand the detrimental importance of self consciousness. We as citizens, as Americans, as human beings must take it upon ourselves to clear up any confusion and set these poor wasteful droids into the right direction. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Year 11 English Satire Essay I am profoundly sorry to hear about you're concern as a parent. Ms Vogt has informed me of the complaint, and I understand that you may be distraught and troubled about the use of the "mockumentary", Summer Heights High within your child's classroom. You may feel that your child may be influenced by some of the actions within the piece, but there is nothing to worry about at all! Everything is under control and we know what is best! As part of the year 11 English curriculum, all English classes are exploring the use of satire around the world. We are showing this show not to sit around and laugh as you waste valuable money, but as a class point out the problems that withstand in the film and talk about why people can find these typed of series so enjoyable! First of all, I want to introduce you to the series. Summer Heights High...show more content... We will be learning how satirical text can be used to entertain an audience and how aspects of satire such as irony and exaggeration can be used to entertain a large audience! Another key reason is so that your child is aware of what happens and why they treat other people that are different to them in series such as Summer Heights High. In a perfect school everyone is treated equally and no one is abused and offended, so learning about Summer Heights High can be used as a guide on what not to do, so your child becomes more respectful and humble of where he is. Furthermore, we learn about the type of satire on whether it is Horatian or Juvenalian and what this means. Additionally, how satire can be used to show different personalities of characters within a public school. From this, we look at the stylistic features of the characters which includes looks, clothing, physical appearance, and attitude. These stylistic features give meaning and feeling to what is being shown. Do you really want your child to miss out on deep meaningful learning such as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflective Essay: For A Satire For a laugh, really. I feel like the author wanted to put out something new and exciting with situations that were very realistic whilst being comedic. I personally think that this book series was intended for an older audience. It's pretty satirical with humor that would appeal to someone looking back on middle school as opposed to someone experiencing it at that time. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Satirical Essay: Celebrities Celebrity Role Models A state in which the mind is elevated above the reach of ordinary impressions, unconscious of sensible objects, and under the influence of overpowering emotions celebrities find irresistible and enticing. The immense amount of drug usage that celebrities, athletes, professionals, and politicians take part in has improved society in countless ways and will continue to do so if everyone emulates these social icons. The statistic has shown that 24.4million of American including teens from age of 12, had used an illegal drugs. The primary purpose of drug is a medicine which is to cure diseases, but people in United States nowadays, have misused the usage of drugs by consuming them without recommendation or supervision from the expert. People use drugs as a solution to reduce stress, to relieve the boredom, for enjoyment and also to forget all the dilemmas they have. Besides, drug also can act as an energy booster. • 7. Satire : Humor And Satire Humour and satire are two concepts that are both wide ranging and diverse, from dark, to light hearted, with each producing a different effect. Humour in the main, is something that is used to please the audience, its function is to invoke laughter amongst its audience. Satire is used to create a comical critical view of the subject at hand, this can range from a light hearted comical way, to a judgemental way, with each style giving the text a different meaning, however this does not mean that satire cannot be humorous, which can evident in the use of parody and irony within texts. Within literature both concepts play an important role to how the text is viewed, humour can include word play, grammatical jokes, to even inside jokes with the author and reader, and with satire, including that of irony and parody, with each style and type delivering humour in its own unique way. These differing styles of humour can be found in a variety of forms including Jasper Forde's The Eyre Affair (2001), with its silly atmosphere, word play and grammar jokes, and the use of light hearted satire and parody to brighten up the text, and Julian Barnes A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989), where there is a more serious atmosphere, with a more critical, satirical eye on history and characters, as well as using irony to achieve its comical effect, and the position of the world. • 8. Some of the brightest young students at this school are faced with a growing problem. In class there are disruptive and downright rude students who do not contribute to the learning environment. These bad students are a terrible influence to the rest of the school community, those who don't care about their education are more likely to get involved with violence and gangs. Some of these students are simply "un–teachable" and are a waste of time and space, overcrowding the school and ruining its reputation. We must heed the saying "A rotten apple will spoil the whole barrel." After all, what will become of these worthless people in the future? I hereby suggest a proposal to eliminate all of these social ills, make use of high school...show more content... Judging by how many students are unwilling to take school seriously, there will never be a shortage of such laborers. If any defiant workers refuse to offer labor, they will be executed and their place reserved for some other compliant ex–student, there are too many people anyway. The economy will certainly benefit from this mass–production and the US will be recognized as one of the most prestigious and prosperous nations in the world, producing some of the most brilliant, top–notch scholars. This solution will provide a higher–quality education for the rest of the students in the future. As contrast to what could be, here is an example. Last year I attended an English class here at Arroyo full of students who'd given up on learning, preferring to fool around during class. The teacher had simply given up on "us" (or the troublesome ones), the class was rowdy, out of control most of the time. If only this plan was in effect at that time! The teacher could have taught class uninterrupted without having to waste class time rebuking those annoying twerps. With this proposal in effect, class sizes would be smaller and there would be less disruption so teachers would have more one–on–one time helping students worthy of their time. The learning environment/peer influence would improve, resulting in better performance, even the school's standards would be set Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Analysis of A Modest Proposal Jonathan Swift, the writer of the satirical essay A Modest Proposal, grew up and lived in Ireland during times of famine and economic struggles (Conditions). Growing up with a single mother and no father, Swift knew what hard times and struggles were like (Jonathan Swift: Biography). His essay proposes an easy solution to the economic problems going on in Ireland for both the wealthy ruling classes and the poorer classes, although his intentions and the meaning behind his words are not what would be originally thought when initially reading the essay. Through his word choices and the description of specific events of his time, Swift uses satire to grab his audience's attention and get his own personal ideas and opinions out about all the...show more content... "I rather recommend buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife, as we do roasting pigs" (A Modest Proposal). Comparing the children to roasting a pig shows that the children do not mean that much to anyone and they can just be burned alive and no one would care. He also uses the word "flesh" generally to refer to the children when they're being served and eaten which is an animalistic association (A Modest Proposal). Usually human children would not be referred to as "flesh" or "pigs" at all. This, again, reflects upon how England and the Irish ruling classes treated the people of Ireland, especially the less fortunate. Other words Swift has a tendency of using are "breeders", "males", and "females" (A Modest Proposal). It's not common to hear these words in regard to a human being especially coming from a priest. More directly with his wording, Swift speaks of the landlords in a negative manner. "I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of the parents..." (A Modest Proposal). This statement shows the way the English landlords would take every penny their tenants had. England and Ireland's wealthy class did not care for their people what so ever, and Swift's satire was very effective in proving these points. Most of Swift's essays were much less acknowledged than his fictional works such as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Christopher Morley On Laziness Analysis With social media such as Twitter or Instagram, people have learned how to deliver the same message without using so many words. Technology users incorporate shortcuts such as "LOL" and "SMH" into their texts and social media posts, thus proving that people can still make a strong impact despite doing less work. In his satirical essay "On Laziness," Christopher Morley employs advanced diction and short sentence structure to disprove the popular idea that one cannot accomplish as much being lazy. Morley intentionally chooses words that are not only concise but also elevated. This conciseness allows him to deliver the same message while still maintaining a sophisticated tone. Morley elaborates in his essay "Henceforward we are going to...show more content... His short sentence structure asserts control on his writing. It allows him to direct the flow of his essay in the manner he wants it. When explaining the importance of laziness, Morley elucidates it as "Philosophical laziness, we mean. The kind of laziness that is based upon a carefully reasoned analysis of experience. Acquired laziness"(33–35). Through the abrupt use of "acquired laziness," Morley successfully switches the subject of the paragraph without having to write a smooth transition from one term to the next, while still able to fully explain his previous points. By enforcing this control with minimal effort, the author once again proves that he can accomplish writing a reputable essay while simultaneously being lazy. In addition, the frequent use of shorter sentences enables him to be more critical. Morley can critique those who are against laziness and not use elaboration to soften those critiques. Later in the essay, he advises readers to "Mind your business...but mind your idleness also. It's a tragic thing to make a business of your mind. Save your mind to amuse yourself with"(Morley 76–79). Morley's short directions are helpful while at the same time demeaning to those who "make a business of their minds."He makes himself an authoritative figure without heavy word use, therefore strengthening his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Examples Of Satire Essay To the Department of Public Safety, The amount of car accidents that happen each year continue to increase. This continues to happen because of the number of people who consistently drive distracted everyday. This is due to a surplus of reasons, however, many fall subject to driving distracted because they prioritize their cell phones more than what is happening on the road in front of them. I was involved in a car accident a year ago when I was struck in my drivers side door by another person. The events after are a blur, but I remember losing control of my car, traveling over the median that divided the directions of traffic, spinning around, and then rolling over to end up with the passenger side of my car on the ground. It was a miracle...show more content... He was sitting there, his car barely touched, on his phone. When asked if he saw me traveling on the road before he made his turn, he responded, "I did not see her. I am so sorry that this happened." Although I am not exactly sure why he did not see me, I can assure you that by the way that he acted afterwards, looking at his phone, he was distracted while he was waiting to leave. This year in my english class, we are learning about the different satirical techniques authors use to criticize specific issues that are found alarming. Our class analyzed a satirical paper, "A Modest Proposal", by Dr. Jonathan Swift, who writes about the poverty throughout Ireland and England, providing a exaggerated solution to clear the problem. We were given an assignment to write a satirical essay based on the same format as Swift's proposal. I can assure you that my prompt was not a difficult one to brainstorm. Many people are guilty of driving without their full attention on the road. In my essay, I concluded that a proper solution would be to completely get rid of all cell phones, and any technological devices installed in cars that lead to distracted driving. This would solve many problems such as, safer transportation, money saved and used elsewhere because the nation would not need contribute so much to economic and societal loss, and alertness on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Satirical Essay On Social Media There has been a serious problem that has risen over the past few years with teens and social media. Due to the creation of iPhones, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and whatever other technology they are spending ridiculous amounts of time on, their generation is soon going to be filled with children who are a number of things, such as, restless, robotic, obese, uneducated, and even antisocial. As a high school teacher, I have recently noticed a drastic drop in many of my student's grades and I could not for the life of me find out why. At first, I thought It may have had something to do with my teaching skills which made me so concerned that I even went to other teachers for advice. After weeks passed and student's grades kept falling, I got really down on myself and every night I would have an emotional breakdown on my husband. Then finally, I came to the realization it had nothing to do with my teaching job, it was actually because the students who are making poor grades are so emotionally consumed in their small pixel screen, even while in class. Recently a survey was done by researchers to get an overview on how often teens "have to" check their social media. The results were that 92 percent of the surveyed teens go online daily and that includes...show more content... To give an ethical appeal I said that I am a teacher. By saying this I gave credibility to myself for the information I was providing in order to convince my readers. I used a logical appeal when I gave the statistic "92 percent of the surveyed teens go online daily and that includes the 24 percent who said they are on it almost constantly". This appealed to the readers because it shows just how much teens are actually consumed in social media. Also, to appeal to emotion I used words such as, antisocial, obese, slugs, emotional breakdown, and my heart aches to create an emotional response. After reading Swift's essay half way through, one might not believe how graphic and shocking it's been written. He wrote a letter suggesting they sell the children of the poor to the wealthy families, as this will provide food, clothing, and will decrease the population. Throughout the letter he uses remarkable details as to how they should go about eating the children, treating them as livestock. The letter ends with a completely different tone when the author explains the absurdity of his proposal and instead suggests something a bit more realistic and humane like the wealthy should give up some of their luxuries. He uses a lot of thorough, literalized metaphors, and ironic and sarcasm techniques to a devastating effect. A Modest Proposal has been judged as an excellent work of rhetorical brilliancy, and it acquires readers critical attention up until now Swift exposes all the bizarre remarks and ideas he has been discussing about are all a humorous way to make fun of the way the government is run and how they are not serving their country. Afterwards he expresses a proper proposal of taking away some of the wealthier people's luxuries in order to help their economy. this essay explains the three techniques used in Swift's proposal, such as; Irony, Satire and Sarcasm. The first technique, Irony is used in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Satire Essay On Alcohol And Drugs Drugs and alcohol are a topic coming out of every American's mouth. They are a household topic. Many people know the dangers and trouble that alcohol and drugs bring, yet it is what most people spend their money on. When you ask them about why they do drugs and alcohol, they reply that they like the feeling it gives you. The feeling that lasts 1–2 hours? Maybe you want to give up the amazing life God has gifted you with, but I don't want to do that. I know that there will be times when I will be pressured into doing drugs, or drinking alcohol. But I know what they do, and I will stay strong and will not fall into that world. Another aspect I will look at alcohol and drugs with is the aspect of religion. My religion tells me that drugs and alcohol are bad. Drugs and alcohol will put me in a state of depression which will harm me. Alcohol and drugs go against my moral principles and my ethics. I simply know that alcohol and drugs are wrong. I know that they will hurt me. They will destroy me from the inside and from the outside. I will lose everything I love in life. Along with it hurting me, they will hurt people around me. If I drink alcohol and drive, I will be putting every single other driver around me at risk....show more content... Many people who are in trouble, or are having some kind of crisis will say that drugs and alcohol will fix this. After the drugs and alcohol, they are back in this state of crisis. They get that amazing feeling for 1–2 hours, then they have to worry about what they did while in that state. Teens who suffer from too much alcohol or usage of drugs started out as teens who said it would only be one time. That one time changes your whole life. That one time changes who you become. That one time changes how the world sees you. That one time could end you. Drugs and alcohol will end my life. They will end me. That is why I will never try that one first Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Jonathan Swift, in his essay "A Modest Proposal", effectively utilizes an extended metaphor in order to convey his message that we must take action against widespread poverty. The satirical point employed suggests that poor children be eaten in order to decrease the surplus population, and is efficacious due to the fact that in such a terrible state of affairs, cannibalism can be logically defended as a viable solution. Swift's essay, written in 1729, clearly precedes the existing social programs in effect throughout much of the first world. However, the ominous reality is that Swift's essay can just as effectively be used as a comparison, albeit a figurative one, to modern day society, if our current welfare spending continues. Implicit within Swift's essay is a call for radical change to the inaction towards the poor that existed in his 18th century society. Though his call was thoroughly addressed by nearly every global government, the poor class has not shrunk in any way due to this, and in fact, government assistance has only worsened the problem. One must only examine the nature of the welfare state to see the oppression inherent within it. By definition, the welfare state is a means of giving assistance to those who do not produce an arbitrary amount of recorded capital for themselves. There is absolutely no encouragement to work, no obligation for productivity. Rather, the Heritage Foundation reported that only two of 80 tested welfare programs in America had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Satirical Analysis Of Teenage Pregnancy ANALYSIS Form The form I have chosen to use in order to depict my satirical piece about teenage pregnancy is that of a Teen Vogue magazine. I chose this form due to the fact that it is a well –known magazine for teenagers. I also chose this due to the fact that Teen Vogue and many other women's magazines comprise of stereotypical, unrealistic, naГЇve and irrational content aimed towards female that can be, in a sense, highly demeaning. Context There are two contexts within my satirical piece. The first is in relation to the increasing occurrence of teenage pregnancy in Australia. The second is in relation to the constant horrid behaviour certain women have that jeopardise the baby's health at birth which could lead to premature birth. This ...show more content... I did this to highlight the inconceivable and preposterous attitudes teenagers currently have when they are pregnant. I chose Teen Vogues style to demean them, as magazines such as this basically tell teenagers how to act and show guides of how to do things such as "Guide to talk to your crush" therefore I used "Guide to taking care of yourself as a preggo teen". This was done to completely ridicule the pregnant teen and also to ridicule a magazine that basically attempts to dictate how a "typical" teenager should be. I believe that my satirical piece is primarily Horatian as it continuously ridicules the way pregnant teenagers handle themselves during their pregnancy. It always states all the completely ridiculous activities that are done by a vast majority of pregnant teenagers nowadays that will affect the pregnancy in a harsh manner. It also pokes at the way Teen Vogue use their element of persuasiveness to encourage teens to follow their "guides". In retrospect, the piece is also quite Juvenalian as it highlights the seriousness of mistreating a pregnancy in a comedic and sarcastic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Satire Essay On Texting And Driving Trust me... you are not as good at texting and driving as you think you are. In our society technology has become a big part in everyone's daily life. A lot of people cannot keep their hands of their cell phones long enough to drive from destination to another. Texting and driving is dangerous, it causes distractions and car accidents that can sometimes result in injuries, or worst death. Texting and driving is very dangerous. Even though using a cell phone while driving is not the only thing that causes accident it is still very dangerous and most of the time it is the reason that causes death. A lot of people underestimate the power the that technology has in our society. Teens and adults are both are guilty of texting and driving but usually teens are usually the ones who suffer from accidents caused by texting and driving. Sometimes even talking on the cell phone can cause a car crash. In the article "How the brain reacts" it says that studies show that a persons listening comprehension draws the...show more content... The driver was distracted because they were on their phone and failed to yield at a stop sign. He drove into oncoming traffic, and their vehicle was struck by a tractor–trailer. Using a cell is so distracting and dangerous, but a lot of people don't realize it, so even if a law was passed and using a cell phone (or any type of similar device) people would still do it because people break laws all time, this wouldn't be any different. In the article "Cell phones and driving..." Chris Cochran said "if there is an advantage, it's only because a person may have two hands on the wheel, but most people drive with one hand anyways." This seems a little ignorant because even though several people do drive with one hand, keep in mind that when texting and driving the person is looking at the cell phone screen instead of keeping their eyes on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Satirical cartoon analysis Essay examples Welcome, everyone to my session of the current affairs week conference. Today I will be analyzing an Australian Political cartoon targeting a current issue– Tony Abbott and his Asylum seeker policy I have chosen a relevant cartoon by Cathy Wilcox, published in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 22nd of December 2013. I'll firstly outline the cartoon's contextual information, after which I'll explore the satirical elements used by Wilcox to persuade the readers of her perspective. Finishing with an evaluation of the cartoons effectiveness. Firstly, to the context of this cartoon. The cartoon addresses the desperate and dangerous situation of asylum seekers arriving by boat to Australia. Wilcox tries to convey Abbott's...show more content... Secondly, Wilcox uses incongruity through visual elements to further her views. Incongruity is most evident when focusing on the man selling lottery tickets to the refugees, with the prize being accepted into Australia. This lottery concept is bizarrely, yet intentionally associated with the refugees, highlighting how they are manipulated with false promises. The facial expressions and symbols used enhance the cartoon's incongruity. The ticket seller's immensely large grin suggests there is more to this lottery offer than meets the eye, alongside his remark "Get your lottery tickets here!" an unusual phrase to hear in refugee areas. The sign written with Australia, $5000.... states the price of a lottery ticket though the ellipses imply that a greater cost is involved. They are gambling with money as well as taking big risks with their lives with no guarantee of safely reaching Australia. The refugees' anxious expressions show their realization of the dangers but their disparity forces them to take these risks. Finally, to the effectiveness of this cartoon. Overall the cartoon is very effective. It is eye–catching and it's use of parody and incongruities in conjunction with the visual elements effectively portray the cartoonist's perspective of Tony Abbott. It successfully reveals Abbott's genuine double–sided views on overseas refugees and orphans whilst Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Satire Essay On Texting And Driving Texting and Driving Deej Logan was just like any normal high school girl. She woke up on her first day of school and combed her hair, picked out the "perfect" outfit and headed out the door. What she didn't know is that after that day nothing would be the same. Nothing that day seemed to be going right. At school drama was swarming all around her, not exactly what she hoped the first day would be like. By the time the last bell of the day rang she was more than happy to get out of that school. She drove home as quickly as she could but as soon as she got home she realized that she had forgotten to pick up her sisters. "Great." She thought sarcastically as she sat back down in her car and drove off. Just then she pulled out her phone to message one of her friends about her awful day. That one decision changed everything. Before she had a chance to send the message Deej veered off into oncoming traffic and was killed on impact. Today Deej's dad travels across the country, speaking in classrooms and gymnasiums educating highschoolers about the risks and dangers involved texting while driving. He never imagined that something like this could happen to someone so close to him. His plan however is to educate as man kids as he possibly can in hopes of saving even one life. Anything he can do to prevent...show more content... • 20. Humans are naturally ignorant, especially when they do not want to see harsh realities. The most common truth that humans try to avoid acknowledging is inequality, generally caused by those with privilege, trying to separate themselves from those who are unprivileged. Privilege is most commonly caused by skin color, financial status, and religious beliefs, as unfortunate as these ideas are. In Jonathan Swift's essay "A Modest Proposal," Swift uses irony, hyperbole, and sarcasm to ridicule the detrimental effects of oppression and discrimination in society.
