Walmart Strengths And Weaknesses
Walmart is one of the biggest companies in the world, but it also has extremely tough competitors. Currently Walmart is the largest retailer in most
countries of the world for numerous reasons. For one, they supply a wide variety of items to be purchased that include entertainment, groceries, health
and wellness, hardware, furnishing, apparel and many more. Walmart also has over 11,100 stores in over 27 countries according to Market Realist.
These two reasons alone give Walmart a huge advantage over its' competitors. Walmart has both strengths and weaknesses when it comes to its'
competitors not only across the nation, but across the world as well. Some of the main domestic competitors of Wal–mart consist of Target, Costco,
Amazon, and the dollar store trinity. Along with that, Walmart has international competition such as Carrefour in France, Metro in Germany, Tesco in
the United Kingdom, Loblaw Companies in Canada, and Ahold in the Netherlands. Although Walmart has competitors with all of these companies
worldwide, it still remains the "#1 retailer in Canada and Mexico and has operations in Asia (where it owns a 95% stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU ),
Africa, Europe, and Latin America", according to Hoovers. Strangely enough, Walmart is growing more overseas than it is in the United States. Even
with all these companies it has to compete with, Wal–mart's total sales are still almost 5 times its' competitors. As it generates a net sale of over $483
billion in one year,

Models of retail competition
This chapter examines the effects of competition on a retailer's performance. As noted in Chapter 1, retailing in the United States was once a growth
industry that was able to increase profits solely on the basis of an increasing population base. Today's slower population growth rates have turned
retailing into a business where successful regional and national retailers can grow only by taking sales away from competitors. However, retail
competition at the local level is more complex. Depending upon the economic base of the regional economy, it is possible for an area's population
and disposable income to grow even while the country's is slowing. For example, Phoenix and Las Vegas are like many Sunbelt... Show more content

Further, a new private school in town brought in a number of residents with more sophisticated tastes than those of the typical Wal–Mart customer. By
catering to these underserved customer segments, the variety store has thrived.
A small retailer competition is not just the large discount stores in the area. This retailer would be wise to check the local drugstore, perhaps a
Walgreens, that stocks small appliances; the internet for competitive pricing information and 24/7 shopping convenience; and category killers that
might offer a deeper selection and a better level of service than the discounters. For example, Best Buy lured female customers away from traditional
discounters and small specialty electronics stores by providing merchandise selections tailored to each local market area and by training its sales
associates not to "talk down" to them, as had often happened in other electronics stores.
It is important to remember that no retailer, however clever, can design a strategy that will totally insulate it from competition. This is true even if the
retailer has done an excellent job in developing and following its mission statement, setting its goals and objectives, and conducting its SWOT analysis;
customer still have shopping choice. The rapid growth of discount department stores, convenience stores, and catalog and internet retails attest to this
fact. Some merchandising innovations can be easily copied and

Dollar General Case Analysis
Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well–known extreme–value retailer, has an established competitive advantage versus other
consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis an
appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store retail segment (original dollar stores, close–out retailers,
limited assortment grocers, and extreme–value retailers) all compete on price. Dollar General is very competitive in this regard, but this alone has not
rendered the company successful; price is not Dollar General's competitive advantage amongst its competitors. Therefore, a ... Show more content on

I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek limited expansion within the continental United States
(US extreme–value industry still growing at $1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to this state only.
Whereas development within the US had been the company's growth engine for years, the company is now closing and remodeling stores with equal
returns. As such, the company's growth aims should be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme–value markets are well received, and stores with
limited SKU's fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly, store merchandise productivity could be enhanced by eliminating seasonal items
(costumes, summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery items. Research suggests that same–store growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis
on fresh grocery items, and Dollar General appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of perishables on hand. A slightly larger
store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of development, as Dollar General seems to have slightly underestimated the 'sweet–spot' for
its store size with the current store model. The stores would remain small enough to facilitate accelerated shopping, but large enough to hold a proper
number of SKU's, still in the

“the Dollar Store’s Food and Cigarettes Strategy Is Working”
The article is about the variety retail store chain Family Dollar's approach to increasing sales and competing against not only other variety store
retailers' but against, convenience stores and mega retailers as well. "Last Year, Family Dollar decided it sold enough cheap detergent and school
supplies – what it needed was food and cigarettes. Its research found that many of its customers smoke, and smokers tend to make frequent trips to buy
cigarettes – maybe they'd pick up some groceries and whatnot while they were there. Food is also something people buy frequently, so the combination
hopefully would boost traffic."(BusinessWeek.com/Articles/2013–10–10/the–dollar–stores) The discount variety store teamed up with McLane, a

goods, that's a boon says COO Michael Bloom for a store where many items are $1 or less, and most items are less than $10." (BusinessWeek.com
/Articles/2013–10–10/the–dollar–stores)
Last Wednesday the company reported that there consumables category, which includes food and tobacco increased 16.9% to 7.5 Billion in the 12
months ended in August. Had they been wrong, who knows how adversely this strategy could have been to the company. Appealing to smokers and
using there needs to smoke and buy other consumables is a risky approach considering how many people feel about the adverse effects of tobacco.
When I saw the strategy and approach I was intrigued. I have never been a smoker and I have never shopped at any dollar store including Family
Dollar. I always looked at them as a novelty supplier, I never knew they carried these types of products or the type of assortment listed in the article.
By really focusing on their customers, and there needs to purchase certain consumables, and to purchase them often, I can see how Family Dollar can
be extremely successful. By competing at the price level for products they can put dents in revenues streams for mega retailers Wal–mart and Kmart.
By offering these lines of products and be

The company does not have a weakness as such but due to an ever increasing pressure in the retailing market, it has lost some of its domestic
customers. Also the weak economic condition of the country has decreased the buying ability of the people and retail stores are hit hard by this.
The store has not been doing good in Germany and South Korea which adds to the concerns. Economic outlook United States has come out of
recession of the 2009 fastest as compared to the other developed nation but still the economic conditions of the country are far from great. The
biggest concern for the economy of the country is its ever increasing fiscal deficit that has been increasing by $1.1 trillion per year which may lead
to a rating downgrade by the rating agencies. This would increase the interest paid by the country on its huge household debt of about $16 billion. The
unemployment of about 8 percent is also very high and the United States Federal Reserve has also shown signs to taper its $85 billion spending per
month now. Though it means that the economy is getting better but this would reduce the liquidity in the market and is not good news for the stock

The Internal Analysis Of Dollar Tree Essay
The internal analysis is very important in a company. Just like the external analysis, both of these analysis help to determine strategies. The
Internal analysis involves the strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats of a company (Pearson, 2014). Dollar Tree has many strengths but
they also have some weakness too. If Dollar Tree would use the data that they have from their internal analysis they could turn a lot of their
weakness into strengths. But we will talk about their weaknesses later. The more strength a company has the better. One of Dollar Tree's strengths
would be that they acquired Family Dollar in 2015. This is a huge strength for Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree has many opportunities to overtake the
dollar store market. They only need to keep inquiring their competitor's stores. Strength for Dollar Tree is their strong financial performance. They
are the largest dollar store in the market. Dollar Tree has a $15.5B Annual net sale that grew to 80.2% in 2015 and exceeded $15 billion for the first
time in Company history. Now to Dollar Tree's weaknesses, this would be their low inventory turnover ratio. In 2016, Dollar Tree reported that their
inventory turnover ratio was 3.8 (Canadean, 2016). This is a high number. This is saying that they have more than enough of inventory in store that is
not being bought by their customers. This is really money that is setting in their warehouse or stockroom and it just sitting and is not being used. This
is bad for Dollar Tree.

Room Vision Board Analysis
I have come up with quite a few money saving options to transform your nursery, playroom, child's bedroom or ever you teenagers lair into a
wonderful, custom space that they'll never want to leave! To get started you must know what your budget is; with some of these tips no budget it
too small. Next, have a feel for what your child likes or what kind of space you want to create ; have an idea going into it. If you don't, then start
digging for new & fresh ideas. Pick a theme if you want. Themes can be anything, a print( Chevron, paisley, Moroccan) , one or more of your
favorite colors, a Disney character, the sea, dinosaurs, construction... The ideas are endless. You just have to choose something that fits your child's
likes & needs! I recommend starting a room vision board; your child can help! Go through old magazines, paint swatches, images on the internet
looking for things they like. Cut them out or print out the images & glue them done on a paper This could be anything a specific color , storage
ideas, a theme, a pattern... anything that stands out to the person whom the room is for. Then, cut them out or print out the images & glue them
down on a paper or pin it to a board. This creation of a visual idea collage will become the blueprint that the room is based on. Once this is done
decide what things to can repurpose or make yourself. Even if it's a few things, making it yourself from the heart is ALWAYS better than buying. If

Environmental scanning plays a critical role in the strategic management planning process. The environmental scan provides important information,
which may be useful in forecasting changes for the future.
Environmental scanning is, "the monitoring, evaluation, and dissemination of information from the external and internal environments to key people
within the organization." (Wheelen and Hunger, Ch.4, Sec. 4.1) Managers scan the internal environment for strengths and weaknesses and the external
environment for opportunities and threats. Strengths and weaknesses can be found within the company structure, as well as the employee pool. ... Show

Walmart was founded in 1962 with the opening of its first store in Rogers, Arkansas; with one goal in mind, "helping customers and communities save

Dollar Tree Essay
Dollar Tree's strategy fits in the prospector's category of Miles and Snow's strategy framework. The prospector's strategy defines a company as
flexible and adaptive to environmental changes (Parnell, 2014). Naturally, in the grocery industry, companies obtain the power to change their
strategies to meet the needs of the challenging economy. The retail sector provides operators with an uncertain environment due to the many changes
and challenges it inquires. Dollar Tree is always looking for new innovations and products they can add to their product mix. Naturally, as new
products enter the market, Dollar Tree's strategy allows them to accept and sell the new products to customers. Also, Dollar Tree has always been able
to offer a low–cost or a single price strategy to their customers which put stress on their competitors. Furthermore, Dollar tree was the first mover to

Critical Analysis Of David Lindsay Abaire's 'Good People'
Everybody has a class no matter if your poor or rich. Examining the difference between Southie and Chestnut Hill you can tell which class is poor
and which class is rich. Through "Good People", David Lindsay Abaire argues that rich people and poor people has a different life styles. This can
be seen through his use of imagery, characterization and conflict. In this play, David Lindsay Abaire uses imagery to shows what type of life style
that Southie and Chestnut Hill has. Firstly, Southie has many poor people and broken things around them. For example, Abaire shows how
Southie's environment looks by the narration of the play, "The alley behind the Dollar store. There's a dumpster back there and a rusty chair and a
door labelled Dollar store" (5). Another way, Chestnut Hill has many rich people and many expensive things. For example, Abaire narrates about
Mikes house in details, "Lights up on a beautiful home. The living room takes up most of the space. Up and left we may see part of a foyer that
leads to the front door. Doorways and corridors lead off to other parts of the house– the kitchen, the dining room, maybe we see a staircase that leads up
to the bedroom" (105). The author went into details to show how rich Mike is. Again, Abaire is showing us that anyone from Southie will try their
luck to get more money. For example, Margret is playing bingo with her friends in a basement of a church, "Margaret, jean and Dottie are at a folding
table in the basement of a

In 1995 the company went public, trading its stock on NASDAQ under the symbol DLTR, growing into a large, highly profitable retail company. In
1997 Dollar Tree opened its first distribution center and new store support center, both located in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Keys for Expansion Unlike many of its competitors, by maintaining the one–dollar price tag on all of the items in its shelves, gave Dollar Tree a
tremendous advantage in costumers' minds helping it to grow the size and number of its stores. In order to for the company to expand, some changes
had to be made. Rather than continuing to sell only closeout merchandise, the founders decided for their stores to be the equivalent of traditional variety
stores, which had a large selection of basic goods priced at one dollar or less. In order for that to work they had to change the way they purchased their
merchandise, which consisted on deals and novelties. They began buying directly from foreign manufacturers and manufacturers in the United States.
Another change that was necessary and very important was the location of their stores. Since the beginning, when they were still part of K&K
Toys, most of their stores were inside shopping malls. This had to change. They then began concentrating on opening stores in strip centers where their
stores would be anchored to large grocery stores, or other large merchandisers such as Target, or Wal

Since the founding in 1959, Family Dollar has succeeded no matter the condition of the economy. Family Dollar's retail strategy shows to be rather
effective in both good and bad economic times. Family Dollar prides the business on being a small convenience store to satisfy the needs of local
families, primarily low–income based, in the area with a variety of goods and services. Over the years, Family Dollar has expanded its selection of
goods and apparel to include: holiday decorations, home–cleaning products, pet–related products, and health and beauty aids. However, Family Dollar

Dollar General Industry Analysis
MEMORANDUM To: From: Date: Re: Dollar General Industry Analysis Executive Summary: Dollar General is the sixth largest mass merchandiser,
and the fourth largest discount store in the U.S. However, significant growth opportunities remain for extreme–value retailers such as Dollar General.
Dollar General's strategic objective is sustainable and profitable long–term growth. The company has opportunities for growth by expanding in the
United States to areas that lack an extreme–value retail presence. Continuing to serve low–, middle–, and fixed–income families in small communities
will prevent Dollar General from competing directly against mass retailers such as Wal–Mart and Target. Dollar General's strength... Show more content

The dollar store industry caters to low–, middle–, and fixed–income buyers who are price sensitive. Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the
best bargain for an item that they will need to purchase again in the near future. The high threat of customer buying power drives profitability down.
In contrast to buyer power, supplier power is low. This is due to the large number of suppliers that offer price–competitive, undifferentiated products.
Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases
profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. Since extreme–value retailers offer a focused assortment of goods in a small–box format, mass
retailers such as Wal–Mart and Target are substitutes rather than competitors. On one hand, mass retailers have a larger assortment of branded goods,
economies of scale, and are highly price competitive with extreme–value retailers. On the other hand, extreme–value retailers are more convenient due
to the small–box format, allowing a customer to get in and out quickly. The products being sold are undifferentiated so price–performance tradeoff is
low. The threat of new entrants into the industry is medium. There are areas of the U.S. with no extreme–retail presence, making it easier for a new
entrant to open and capture market share. On the demand side,

Memo of Dollar General
Relevant Economic Trends With the exception of supercenters such as Costco and BJ's, the fastest–growing portion of the overall retail industry in the
United States during the past decade has been in the dollar store segment. From 2000–2005 dollar stores had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
of 10.2% which was nearly double the 5.6% CAGR in the retail industry as a whole. Sales from these discount stores were $24.7 billion in 2000 and
were expected to more than double to $51.1 billion in 2009 (Exhibit 8). Two main drivers fueled this growth trend. The first was a cultural shift in
consumers towards a bargain–based mentality. This was spurred by an increased presence of retailers with a low cost strategy including Wal–Mart,...

They emphasize the use of even–dollar prices on most items to conveniently make it easy for customers to track how much they are spending before
they get to the checkout line. This coupled with their focused assortment of quality goods allows easy in and out shopping and saves the customer time.
DG competes against big–box retailers such as Wal–Mart through price and convenience rather than price and selection. The average DG store is 6,900
square feet with about 4,900 stock–keeping units (SKUs) serving customers who live within five miles of the store. The average Wal–Mart on the other
hand is over 100,000 square feet containing more than 75,000 SKUs and serves many customers living more than five miles away. Strategically
limiting the number of brands and sizes as well as purchasing fast–turning SKUs gives DG the leverage to negotiate low purchase prices when
bargaining with suppliers based on the higher volume of individual SKUs being purchased. This allows them to offer competitive prices while
achieving price parity with big–box retailers selling the same items and on occasion even beating these competitor's prices. Focusing on both price and
convenience also allows DG to compete and differentiate themselves from other small convenience, discount, and drugstore retailers who typically
focus on either price or convenience but

Walmart The Master Strategizes : Walmart
Walmart the Master Strategizes Walmart has always been considered a powerhouse in the retail business world. It is encouraging to read the story

Although its policy prohibits off–the–clock work, Wal–Mart has created a system of rewards and punishments that seem to give managers strong
incentives to demand such work. According to one policy, described in a deposition by a senior payroll executive, store managers are ordered to keep
payroll costs below a target set by headquarters for every store. If a store misses its target, the manager faces a reprimand, and sometimes demotion or
dismissal. Another incentive Wal–Mart gives store managers to squeeze down labor costs is pegging annual bonuses to the profits of individual stores,
a system that is rare amongst big retailers. OBJECTIVE OF STUDY For this study, I will record the daily closing stock prices for Wal–Mart Stores,

Dollar General (NYSE: DG) is a public company is an American chain of variety stores and they are headquartered out of Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
They offer name brand and generic items. Some history about Dollar General is that they were founded in Scottsville, Kentucky by the company J.L.

success, and other stores owned by J.L. Turner and his son Cal Turner were quickly converted. By 1957, annual sales ofDollar General's 29 stores were

This project helped their company grow tremendously and their numbers can show it. Dollar General is committed to four key operating
priorities: 1) driving productive sales growth, 2) increasing gross margin, 3) leveraging process improvements and information technology to
reduce costs and 4) expanding our culture to serve others. In 2011, they recorded record sales, operating profit, net income, and cash flows from
operations (Dollar General, 2012). Looking at the analysis and their overall numbers, Dollar General had a great year and I believe this is from their
2011 expansion plan. Their net sales was up to $14.8 B in 2011 from $13 B in 2010. They had a same–store sales growth of 6% in 2011 from 4.9% in
2010. Their ending store count in 2011 ended up at 9,937 compared to what they had in 2010 with 9,372 stores. They actually surpassed their goal
of 550 stores with adding an extra 15 stores. Another fact is they had a sales per square feet at $213 compared to 2010 which was $201 (Dollar
General, 2012). For the actual results, I believe that they accomplished their 2011 expansion project. They set their goals of adding more stores,
which they even made extra stores, renovating those older stores that needed work and they added employees. Enduring all these costs, Dollar
General made a profit from this whole project and I believe it will help towards their future plans. Dollar General is a great example if someone or an
organization is trying to expand their business. Dollar General molded the steps it takes to implement the process, put the right programs in place, view
the budget and make sure they are within their budget, take the necessary steps to make sure the whole procedure goes smoothly and evaluate their

discounts, buy in bulk and have items delivered to your house which in turns saves you money. Dollar Tree's online store is a great tool to have;
however, you have to buy in bulk online. With that being said that means when you go to check out you have to have the minimum amount of

way of viewing a business is to look objectively at its' operations. This begins by looking at their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats or to
conduct a SWOT analysis of Wal–Mart. * A strong point of Wal–Mart is that they have developed a loyal customer and employee foundation. This
interaction is vital and helps the company grow and learn. They achieved this loyalty with good customer service, great pricing for the products and by
moving to areas of the country that are often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* Wal–Mart is the world's largest grocery retailer and the control of its' empire, despite its' IT advantages, it still leaves a lot of weak area where they
need to use their resources to the fullest and find a way to solve that as soon as possible. * The opportunities for Wal–Mart are where their
resourcefulness ends. Wal–Mart needs to focus on the future and improve their perception. American consumers are driven by cost however that is now
starting to change. People in America perceive the larger picture and Wal–Mart needs to start promoting positive ideas. * Expand to other countries *
Improve local communities perception * Lobby Federal Government for tax breaks and incentives * Promote fair trade and human labor laws *
Promote green world * A new marketing campaign * Hire young staff * Certain new rules and regulation when it comes to customer service. * To take
over, merge with, or form strategic alliances with other global retailers, focusing on specific markets. Example – bharti– Wal–Mart in India. * The
stores currently only trade in a relative small number of countries. Therefore there are tremendous opportunities for future business in expanding
consumer markets.
* According to me there are very few threats to Wal–Mart but I have mentioned the few I found, which may be causing problems for the company. *
Current economy * Tariff taxes * Employee unions * Warehouse

Walmart Strengths And Weaknesses

  • 1. Walmart Strengths And Weaknesses Walmart is one of the biggest companies in the world, but it also has extremely tough competitors. Currently Walmart is the largest retailer in most countries of the world for numerous reasons. For one, they supply a wide variety of items to be purchased that include entertainment, groceries, health and wellness, hardware, furnishing, apparel and many more. Walmart also has over 11,100 stores in over 27 countries according to Market Realist. These two reasons alone give Walmart a huge advantage over its' competitors. Walmart has both strengths and weaknesses when it comes to its' competitors not only across the nation, but across the world as well. Some of the main domestic competitors of Wal–mart consist of Target, Costco, Amazon, and the dollar store trinity. Along with that, Walmart has international competition such as Carrefour in France, Metro in Germany, Tesco in the United Kingdom, Loblaw Companies in Canada, and Ahold in the Netherlands. Although Walmart has competitors with all of these companies worldwide, it still remains the "#1 retailer in Canada and Mexico and has operations in Asia (where it owns a 95% stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU ), Africa, Europe, and Latin America", according to Hoovers. Strangely enough, Walmart is growing more overseas than it is in the United States. Even with all these companies it has to compete with, Wal–mart's total sales are still almost 5 times its' competitors. As it generates a net sale of over $483 billion in one year, ... • 2. Stop Models of retail competition This chapter examines the effects of competition on a retailer's performance. As noted in Chapter 1, retailing in the United States was once a growth industry that was able to increase profits solely on the basis of an increasing population base. Today's slower population growth rates have turned retailing into a business where successful regional and national retailers can grow only by taking sales away from competitors. However, retail competition at the local level is more complex. Depending upon the economic base of the regional economy, it is possible for an area's population and disposable income to grow even while the country's is slowing. For example, Phoenix and Las Vegas are like many Sunbelt... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Further, a new private school in town brought in a number of residents with more sophisticated tastes than those of the typical Wal–Mart customer. By catering to these underserved customer segments, the variety store has thrived. A small retailer competition is not just the large discount stores in the area. This retailer would be wise to check the local drugstore, perhaps a Walgreens, that stocks small appliances; the internet for competitive pricing information and 24/7 shopping convenience; and category killers that might offer a deeper selection and a better level of service than the discounters. For example, Best Buy lured female customers away from traditional discounters and small specialty electronics stores by providing merchandise selections tailored to each local market area and by training its sales associates not to "talk down" to them, as had often happened in other electronics stores. It is important to remember that no retailer, however clever, can design a strategy that will totally insulate it from competition. This is true even if the retailer has done an excellent job in developing and following its mission statement, setting its goals and objectives, and conducting its SWOT analysis; customer still have shopping choice. The rapid growth of discount department stores, convenience stores, and catalog and internet retails attest to this fact. Some merchandising innovations can be easily copied and ... How to Do a Case Main players Meredith Collins, VP of Marketing for Reed Supermarket Dollar stores are increasing competitorпѓ The Dollar General (DG), , Family dollar, Aldi poses threat due to its remarkable low price, Jack Morrissey, CEO of Reed Supermarket Other supermarkets like Wal –Mart, Costco Higher–end customers Food manufacturers–aldi, trader joe's, sell mostly private label merchandise Limited selection stores a) The main problem or two key problems. This approach would capture the attention of customers who value quality over price and customers who are price conscious, which in turn might create some loyal customers. They might even pass the targeted 16% that the CEO Jack Morrissey has set up, which in turn might give them at least a temporary competitive advantage. (differentiate itself from the other supermarkets) The company can continue on carrying organic products but they can also emphasize on the healthy aspect of the it, so they could meet the demands of the health conscious Americans. c) Pros and Cons for each of the solutions. The special dollar approach might confuse customers or tarnish Reed's image and possibly lower margin as Collins is worried about, but it will help it might increase market share by creating a whole new customer base. High–end and Low–end operation would capture a new customer base, but might lose some of its current high–end customers they might not properly understand the new approach. Focus on advertising to health conscious customers could help the company maintain current and possible bring in new customers, but it could very expensive and limit the company's customer potentials. d) Rationale for choosing one of the solutions, explain how this is the best solution. • 4. Dollar General Case Analysis Intuitively one might assume that Dollar General, the well–known extreme–value retailer, has an established competitive advantage versus other consumer goods retailers with respect to price. It would then follow that cost would be a defining characteristic of the company, and a cost analysis an appropriate analytical tool. However, the four distinct types of retailers within the dollar store retail segment (original dollar stores, close–out retailers, limited assortment grocers, and extreme–value retailers) all compete on price. Dollar General is very competitive in this regard, but this alone has not rendered the company successful; price is not Dollar General's competitive advantage amongst its competitors. Therefore, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would suggest the company to carry out the following actions. First, the company should seek limited expansion within the continental United States (US extreme–value industry still growing at $1.5 billion/year), namely into California. However, expansion should be limited to this state only. Whereas development within the US had been the company's growth engine for years, the company is now closing and remodeling stores with equal returns. As such, the company's growth aims should be moved abroad (Europe), where extreme–value markets are well received, and stores with limited SKU's fair better than larger discount outlets. Secondly, store merchandise productivity could be enhanced by eliminating seasonal items (costumes, summer toys) and adding more strategic grocery items. Research suggests that same–store growth could be spurred by a heavier emphasis on fresh grocery items, and Dollar General appears to have the delivery capabilities to keep a fair supply of perishables on hand. A slightly larger store size for new shops might be necessary for this sort of development, as Dollar General seems to have slightly underestimated the 'sweet–spot' for its store size with the current store model. The stores would remain small enough to facilitate accelerated shopping, but large enough to hold a proper number of SKU's, still in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By really focusing on their customers, and there needs to purchase certain consumables, and to purchase them often, I can see how Family Dollar can be extremely successful. • 14. The Internal Analysis Of Dollar Tree Essay The internal analysis is very important in a company. Just like the external analysis, both of these analysis help to determine strategies. The Internal analysis involves the strengths, weaknesses, opportunity and threats of a company (Pearson, 2014). Dollar Tree has many strengths but they also have some weakness too. If Dollar Tree would use the data that they have from their internal analysis they could turn a lot of their weakness into strengths. But we will talk about their weaknesses later. The more strength a company has the better. One of Dollar Tree's strengths would be that they acquired Family Dollar in 2015. This is a huge strength for Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree has many opportunities to overtake the dollar store market. They only need to keep inquiring their competitor's stores. Strength for Dollar Tree is their strong financial performance. They are the largest dollar store in the market. Dollar Tree has a $15.5B Annual net sale that grew to 80.2% in 2015 and exceeded $15 billion for the first time in Company history. Now to Dollar Tree's weaknesses, this would be their low inventory turnover ratio. In 2016, Dollar Tree reported that their inventory turnover ratio was 3.8 (Canadean, 2016). This is a high number. This is saying that they have more than enough of inventory in store that is not being bought by their customers. Examining the difference between Southie and Chestnut Hill you can tell which class is poor and which class is rich. Through "Good People", David Lindsay Abaire argues that rich people and poor people has a different life styles. This can be seen through his use of imagery, characterization and conflict. In this play, David Lindsay Abaire uses imagery to shows what type of life style that Southie and Chestnut Hill has. Firstly, Southie has many poor people and broken things around them. For example, Abaire shows how Southie's environment looks by the narration of the play, "The alley behind the Dollar store. There's a dumpster back there and a rusty chair and a door labelled Dollar store" (5). Another way, Chestnut Hill has many rich people and many expensive things. For example, Abaire narrates about Mikes house in details, "Lights up on a beautiful home. The living room takes up most of the space. Up and left we may see part of a foyer that leads to the front door. Doorways and corridors lead off to other parts of the house– the kitchen, the dining room, maybe we see a staircase that leads up to the bedroom" (105). The author went into details to show how rich Mike is. Again, Abaire is showing us that anyone from Southie will try their luck to get more money. Regarding consumables, buyers are looking for the best bargain for an item that they will need to purchase again in the near future. The high threat of customer buying power drives profitability down. In contrast to buyer power, supplier power is low. This is due to the large number of suppliers that offer price–competitive, undifferentiated products. Suppliers must rely on the retail industry to sell their product, so forward integration is unlikely. The low threat of supplier power increases profitability. The threat of substitutes is medium. Since extreme–value retailers offer a focused assortment of goods in a small–box format, mass retailers such as Wal–Mart and Target are substitutes rather than competitors. On one hand, mass retailers have a larger assortment of branded goods, economies of scale, and are highly price competitive with extreme–value retailers. Although its policy prohibits off–the–clock work, Wal–Mart has created a system of rewards and punishments that seem to give managers strong incentives to demand such work. According to one policy, described in a deposition by a senior payroll executive, store managers are ordered to keep payroll costs below a target set by headquarters for every store. In 2011, they recorded record sales, operating profit, net income, and cash flows from operations (Dollar General, 2012). Looking at the analysis and their overall numbers, Dollar General had a great year and I believe this is from their 2011 expansion plan. Their net sales was up to $14.8 B in 2011 from $13 B in 2010. They had a same–store sales growth of 6% in 2011 from 4.9% in 2010. Their ending store count in 2011 ended up at 9,937 compared to what they had in 2010 with 9,372 stores. They actually surpassed their goal of 550 stores with adding an extra 15 stores. Another fact is they had a sales per square feet at $213 compared to 2010 which was $201 (Dollar General, 2012). For the actual results, I believe that they accomplished their 2011 expansion project. They set their goals of adding more stores, which they even made extra stores, renovating those older stores that needed work and they added employees. Enduring all these costs, Dollar General made a profit from this whole project and I believe it will help towards their future plans.
