3. Commercial poultry farming started in Pakistan in
the early 1960s and showed rapid growth over the
decades
In the mid 1960s PIA in collaboration with Shaver
Poultry Breeding Farms of Canada established first
commercial hatchery in Karachi
Prior to 1963 the native breed "Desi" was raised
which produced a maximum of 73 eggs per year
under local conditions.
4. In 1965-66 an improved breed "Lyallpur Silver Black”
(LSB) was evolved
LSB breed developed by crossing the native Desi breed
with three imported breeds
This cross has purpose as:
1. To produce up to 150 eggs per year
2. To survive under harsh environmental
At the same time Lever Brothers Pvt. Ltd established the
first Commercial Poultry Feed Mill in the district Rahim
Yar Khan
5. In 1978 PRI were established in Karachi and
Rawalpindi with assistance from UNDP/FAO
In 1979 Federal Poultry Board was established
In 1979 Pakistan Poultry Association was established
From 1971 to 1980 the industry experienced 177%,
271% and 297% overall growth in total number of
birds, total poultry meat production and total
number of eggs respectively.
6. Major policy decisions by the government that helped the
earlier growth of the industry
Exemption of taxes from the income earned from poultry
farming
permission to import poultry equipment and flocks under
the free list
Leasing of state land at nominal rates
Provision of subsides on grains to formulate low cost,
high quality rations
Declaration of Tuesday and Wednesday as meat- less
days all except chicken to promote its consumption
7. Facilitation to the availability of loans through different
financial institutions
8. This period was characterized by a number of disaster:
In 1990 Hydro Pericardium Syndrome appeared
- It caused a huge damage to broiler and broiler
breeder flocks
In 1991 Gumboro appeared which adversely affected
broiler, layer and parent flocks
In flocks 1995 Avian Influenza outbreak in Murree
and Abbotabad
- It occurred in the parent flocks and caused up
to 80% mortality
9. The emergence of these disease opened new avenues in
the industry:
The prophylactic measures regarding vaccination
and biosecurity were introduced
- New companies for the import of vaccines
and medicines were established
In 1996 oversupply of parent stock in country due to
lack of planning
10. In 2004 the poultry industry enjoyed excellent growth
with good profit margins
- But avian influenza emergence in South East
Asia and its rumored spread into Pakistan retarded this
growth
But now a days industry:
- Received huge investment from new investors
- Poultry farming started shifting from open sided
houses to controlling houses with modern technologies
