• Ostrich farming is an opportunity in Pakistan.
• At present the ostrich meat ranks highest in World.
• Ostrich is a large flightless hardy bird.
• It belongs from African origin.
• It survive in temperatures ranging( 2-50)°C.
• It can be reared on barren land.
• It consumes Alfa-Alfa, Lucerne and water.
• Male ostriches are black, with white wings and tail.
• the ostrich feathers have commercial value.
• The female is dull grayish brown .
• The males are polygamous. (move with three or four females )
• The females lay their yellowish white eggs in the sand.

A large flightless bird.
Ostrich belongs to ratite group (emu and kiwi).
The ostrich is six to nine feet tall, weighing between 90 and 160 kilogram.
This great bird only has two toes, all other birds have three or four toes.
The ostrich can run at speeds of up to 73km/h (43 mph).
An ostrich will live to 50 - 75 years.
An ostrich hen lays eggs for 42 years.
Ostriches do kick forward - it's the direction their legs bend.
Ostrich meat is “halal”.
Ostrich have very small brains. (Eye ball sized)
Ostrich is not at all dangerous or aggressive.

• The domestication of ostrich started in the Eastern Cape, South Africa in the early
part of the 19th Century.
• In 1838 klein karroo region in the western cape developed large farms through the
introduction of barbed wire fencing and lucerne fields.
• 1863 for the industry to become truly organized.
• Ostrich feathers could be harvested annually rather than shooting birds for a single
crop of feathers.
• 1913 ostrich feathers had become the 4th largest export from South Africa behind
Gold, Diamonds and Wool.
• 1915 ostrich were exported to Australia and the United States.

• In World War One (WW1) worldwide collapse of the ostrich industry.
• With this collapse the ostrich in Australia were released into the wild.
• Ostrich farming in South Africa only got started again after the end of World War Two
(WW2).
• Ostrich leather became another high value item, selling at high value and low volume.
• A single channel co-operative, The Klein Karoo Kooperasie (KKK), marketing system
was established in 1959.
• They built the first abattoir in 1964 and a tannery in 1970. Prior to the building of the
tannery, skins were sent to England for tanning.

• An ostrich lives on any cattle fodder.
• During early six months of life it needs special feeds for better growth.
• This feed can be prepared or bought from Pakistan ostrich company.
• With only 3 kg food, it gains 1 kg weight, unlike cow which gains 1 kg after intake of
20 kg food. An ostrich,
• Age between 2-4 months, eats half kg special feed per day.
• A grown up ostrich, with 9 feet height and 100 kg weight, only eats 2-3 kg Alfa-Alfa per
day.
