Definition:
An academic discipline is a field or branch of learning affiliated with an academic
department within a University, formulated for advancement of research and
scholarship and the professional training of researchers, academies and
specialists.
Nature:
 Specialized knowledge and skills
 Has complex theories and concepts
 Complex and wider level arrangements
 Specific areas of operations
 Definite methodology of research
 Higher level context(University, higher education)

Nature:
 Broad knowledge of multiple discipline
 In depth study of a chosen discipline
 Inter-disciplinary learning
 Differential approach to learning
 Connecting the dots through various mental models
 Freedom of mind

Liberal discipline emphasizes a learning system of education which provides
students the choices to take courses which are varied and responds to the
discovery and explorations the student needs to make.

Discipline
 Professional discipline is a formalized approach to a specialized
training in a professional institution where participants acquire
content knowledge and learn to apply techniques.
Nature:
 Delivery for social needs
 Balancing a forward look with the realities of the present
 Focuses on the skills necessary to succeed in the particular field
 Specially designed curriculum with special knowledge and trainings
 Accountability and structured preparation

 Combines aspects of philosophy, psychology, history, sociology, practical studies
(pedagogy, assessment, curriculum, research).
 Has its own set of problems, questions, knowledge bases and approach to
inquiry.

questions that cannot be satisfactorily addressed using single method of

 Reduced interest in taking up liberal arts subject in educational
discipline.
 Lack of respects towards teaching professionals .
 The more theoretical nature of Education.
 Narrow approaches of authorities, management for improvements of
educational discipline in colleges and universities.
 Privatization of professional education and using professional education
as a mean of profit, money making business.

10. Suggestions to Improve the
Status of Education as a
Professional Discipline
 Enhancing the learning management system.
 Programs for holistic advancement to improve the learning outcomes.
 Making teaching profession financially more rewarding so that more
students would be interested in pursuing a professional career in education.
 Bringing a positive change in the mindset of individuals and society towards
educational professions at par with other professions such Administration,
Engineering and Medical.
 Better collaboration at various level of administrations responsible for
development and growth of educational discipline and profession.
 More innovation and new practical approaches are required to integrate
technology into educational discipline and make it more relevant for
current and future times.
 Making overall education system more liberal to allow all professional
disciplines to explore education discipline related topics as such social
science, philosophy, arts etc. and promoting education as professional
discipline in leading professional institutions of the country.
