This document summarizes the author's work-based learning experience at an indoor rock climbing facility. The author made initial learning outcomes focused on personal skill development, then modified them to be specific to the placement. Key outcomes included understanding advertising in sports businesses and teamwork. The placement allowed the author to help advertise a charity event, developing creative and networking skills. Feedback was positive on teamwork skills. Post-placement, the author created short, mid, and long-term goals to continue skills development in areas like creativity, advertising, and kinaesthetic learning.

Work Based Learning
1. Work Based Learning
Intro-
This report is about my personal development I have undertaken. I have made learning outcomes to
get the most out of my work placement to help me develop my skills. This report will highlight the
stages I have gone through to help get the best out of my work placement to and help get the job I
want at the end of university. There are numerous stages that I have gone through leading up to the
work placement and also planning how I will carry on using the skills after work placement to make
me be more successful.
Process review-
For my personal development I went on a work placement to City bloc an indoor rock climbing place
in Leeds. In order to get the best out of the placement I made learning outcomes to state what I
wanted to achieve and in appendix 4 is the first learning outcomes I had made for which I wanted to
achieve in my work based learning. These were initial learning outcomes which I made during the
planning for work based learning section which was before I had sorted out where I was going to go
on placement so they weren’t very specific. I had based my learning outcomes on work I had done
which looked at my personal skills including strengths and weaknesses and how I assessed these
sections which is shown in appendix 5. By looking at these had a rough idea of what I wanted to
improve and use in my work based learning but they weren’t specific.
I looked at numerous possibilities for where I could go for my work placement as shown I appendix
6. I chose to go to City Bloc indoor rock climbing for the placement but this meant I needed to
modify my learning outcomes. The learning outcomes that I have changed to are in appendix 7. I
kept some of the learning outcomes as I feel they are what I want to achieve from my placement.
The learning outcomes I have kept are to be able to be involved in all aspects of the sports business.
This is important to me as I want to know which aspect of the business I prefer most. I have also kept
the learning outcome of improving my entrepreneurial skills in particular my creative. This is because
I have identified this is a weakness through the entrepreneurial graduate skills work booklet of
creativity so I wanted to improve this in my work experience. There are learning outcomes that I
have updated the original ones weren’t specific enough and I also wanted to add new outcomes
which would increase my personal development further.
I added the learning outcome of developing an understanding of advertising in a successful sports
business because advertising is one of my main areas of interests to me in the sport industry. The
way sports organisations use advertising is something I would like to find out as I will want to go into
the advertising section of sports organisations when I graduate. According to Blair (2011) advertising
is very important because this is to increase brand awareness and increase profit from more people
getting involved. This is important as the advertising is an imperative aspect of a sports business to
be successful so this is an area I want to go into.
I also added the learning outcome of understanding how working in a team can benefit successful
sports business because it is very important to be able to use team work in the working environment
because Levi (2010) suggests it is the dependence to rely on others to be successful. Team work is
important in any industry so it is important to be able to show I have these skills. According to
Hardingham (1995) a team is where everyone is working for a shared goal.
The new learning outcomes are specific now because they target the specific goals that I want to
achieve and will help me develop my skills more. The new outcomes are relevant to my personal
2. targets and also relevant to my work placement. This is because City Bloc gave me the opportunity
to advertise a charity event that they are holding which will allow me to be able to see how sports
businesses use advertising to be successful.
I would personally approach this section differently in future as I did not initially decide which
specific areas I wanted to be use for my assessment. This is such as not having the advertising in the
initial learning outcomes or having team work in the initial learning outcomes. I think the work based
learning module could be adapted so there is more tutor contact time which would allow for more
feedback on the way the learning outcomes can be amended best for the work placements.
Learning outcomes-
The work experience was very useful because of the great opportunity to be involved in all areas of
the sports business I was also able to run the advertising of a charity rock climbing event. I was able
to find out all the necessary jobs and roles needed in the work experience as is shown in the learning
log which I found very useful as I would like to work in the sports industry in future. Whetten and
Cameron’s (2007:9) suggested “Management skills consist of identifiable sets of actions that
individuals perform and lead to certain outcomes. Skills can be observed by others, unlike attributes
that are purely mental or are embedded in personality.” This shows that you can obtain skills by
observing them and I observed what it took to be a leader in the sports business and lead in
different aspects of the business such as undertake jobs that I didn’t like such as the cleaning up but
they are every important in order to be successful and pass all health and safety requirements.
Hopkins and Putnam (1993) state that the task of meeting the specialised needs of individuals and
groups presents one of the greatest challenges to sports managers and providers of adventure
programmes, for if the ‘match’ is not achieved correctly, the effectiveness may be mis-educative or
even damaging. This shows that sports managers have got to be able to give the right experience to
the participant such as being safe but challenging or having the sense of danger in the activity and
this will only be done if all the element of the business is running correctly. According to Smith and
Stewart’s (2010) sports management is becoming more like running any other business. This shows
that the skills needed in the sports management are similar to the ones in other businesses so i
would be able to uses these skills in other areas and not just sports industry. I used found the work
experience very good at being able to achieve my learning outcomes as I was able to use all my
learning outcomes in some way during the work experience. This is shown in the learning log in
appendix 5. The learning log goes into detail about what my work experience did to help me get my
learning outcomes on a day to day basis.
The learning outcome that I feel went the most successful was the understanding the advertising in
a sports business. This is because I have the opportunity to advertise for the charity event that City
Bloc was holding. In appendix 8 there is an example of the poster I made for the charity rock
climbing event. As you can see on the poster the charity Headway was one of the contacts that I was
using for my advertising. I feel that one of the main benefits from using this learning outcome in my
work placement was that I was able to use it to build my networking skills. In appendix 9 it shows
who I contacted the people for the advertising of the charity event. One effective strategy to
manage one’s career is networking, which refers to developing and maintaining personal
relationships in order to facilitate the exchange of work related resources (Forret and Dougherty,
2001; Power, 2010; Wolff and Moser, 2010). Studies show that networking is positively related to a
host of vocational outcomes, for example, career success (Forret and Dougherty, 2004; Wolff and
Moser, 2009), job search (Granovetter, 1973; van Hoye et al., 2009; Wanberg et al., 2000), and job
performance (Thompson, 2005). This is why I feel the advertising was so important that I did it as not
only did I learn how to make the posters to advertise the event but I also was also able to make
contacts and network effectively.
3. Another learning outcome that I have added for the work based learning to be for successful in the
developing an understanding of how working in a team can benefit a successful business through
experience. Leitch (2006) argued basic skills, such as literacy and numeracy, and generic skills, such
as teamwork and communication, are applicable in most jobs. This is important as the skill of
teamwork in any organisation especially in the sports industry with the added risk factor so I felt I
needed to incorporate this into my goals such as the use of interdependence which Levi (2010)
suggests is the dependence to rely on others to be successful. According to Mckenzie (2000) the
autonomy of individuals and personal relationships are aspects of the group that contribute to
achievement. This shows that I need to be able to work as a team to be able to be successful and get
the best out of the work experience. In appendix 1 the student evaluation shows that I was able to
complete this learning outcome as my work experience supervisor scored me 9 out of 10 and
commented that I interacted well with every staff member. Group members also learn to cooperate
with one another and capitalize on the strengths of each individual (Hopkins & Putnam, 1993) and
from the evidence of what my learning mentor said about my work experience this shows that I have
been able to do this.
I feel that my learning outcome of developing my creativity skills went successful in the work based
learning as well. According to Runco (2007) creativity helps people adapt. I had to adapt to a new
working environment and adapt to do the advertising for city blocs charity event which I was to take
control of. Being in a new environment allows participants to gain new perspectives on familiar
environments argues Walsh & Golins (1976) and gives them the freedom to experiment (Kimball &
bacon, 1993). I felt this is what happened in my work based learning as I was able to come up with
new creative ideas for the poster and emails that I sent which is shown in appendix 8. I was able to
come up with innovative ideas for the best way to create the posters to make them stand out and be
the most successful.
I have learned a lot from my coaching sessions as it has made me think clearly what the goals are
that I needed to achieve. The coaching sessions made me look in depth what are the areas that I am
looking to develop and what I am planning to do to make this possible for me develop this area. I
found that it made things clearer what I was going to do to structure my work to get the most out of
the work placement. I feel the coaching was good because it helped me reflect on the things I got
out of the placement in appendix 11 it shows the coaching sections that I went through with rob.
According to Luecke( 2004) coaching is a form of developing personal skills and I feel that by doing
the coaching I have been able to develop and it has also made my learning targets more specific to
what I want which has also helped me get the most out of the work experience. Marquard & Loan
(2006) argue that coaching is a way to develop the goals in order to get the best out of the
situations.
Action plan-
With doing my work based learning I found it was very successful to develop personally. As I found
this so useful I decided to carry on my personal development by setting more targets that I want to
achieve in future so that I can develop even more.
Goals after placement-
short term- my long term goal is to increase my creative skills. I feel this is important as I am going to
need this to overcome problems.
Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to use the creativity to come up with new ways
to deal with problems by developing ways in which to advertise the charity event. I want to
4. be able to be creative in thinking of more ways to advertise for the charity event again as it
is rescheduled for April
Measurable- I will be able to measure the creativity by how I have been able to use new
ideas for advertising the charity event and new ways in which the event could be run
Realistic- this is realistic as I already offered advice on how the event will be run and how it
will be advertised.
Achievable- this is achievable as I will be able make the event as I already have shown I have
been creative with it.
Time- this will need to be done before the event in April.
Midterm goals– my midterm goal is to be able to develop my advertising skills as I am going to need
as I would like to get a job in this section of the business.
Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to develop my advertising skills in order to gain
the skills needed to get a job from this.
Measurable- I will be able to measure how I am doing in the advertising section as I am still
doing the advertising for the charity event as it has been rescheduled for April so I will be
helping to advertising for the event.
Realistic- the aim is realistic as I have already been able to do advertising for city bloc but I
will need to do more to make the charity event happen
Achievable- the goal is achievable as I have already been doing advertising but I will need to
increase the amount that I have been doing adverting for the event.
Time- the time for the event is to happen in April so I will need to have done the advertising
for then
Long term – my long term goal is to be able to use my skill of learning kinaesthetically. I feel that this
is a skill that I need to be able to use effectively as this is the way a learn the best.
Specific-I have looked at ways of being able to use the kinaesthetic learning and I need to be
able to learn by doing things. This was shown in the work based learning as when I was give
tasks to do I was able to do them such as teaching the children how to climb.
Measurable-I will be able to measure how much I have learned by testing myself on what
things I can do.
Realistic-the goal will like to be able to achieve are to make things easier for me to learn and
even though kinaesthetic learning involves moving around and I learn best through that I
have found through looking at Tham (2009) that by highlighting will also help kinaesthetic
learners to learn
Achievable- this will be achievable to highlight key points and will be able to let me visually
see the key points quickly and easily so I can know what I need to do
Time- this will be a long term goal that I will not change the type of learner I am so I will have
to find ways in which I can help myself learn.
5. Conclusion
I found the work based learning very useful as I learned a lot of through working in a proper
environment. skills that have helped me develop personally. I have found that it was really good
working in the sports business environment as this is an area that I would like to go into in future.
So I feel that the coaching has helped a lot in clarifying what m goals are and how I will go about
achieving them. I feel that I have developed my learning skills a large amount but I still need to
develop more so have the action plan that I have targets to achieve for the short, mid and long term
to be able to keep developing personally.

Updating my learning outcomes
I have updated my learning outcomes because I feel that they didn’t show enough about what I want
to achieve from my work placement. The main change I have made to my learning outcome it that I
have said that I would like to develop an understanding of advertising in a professional sports
business. I feel that advertising is one of the main areas that I would like to go into after graduation
so I feel it is very important that I have this as one of my learning outcomes.

What learning outcomes have you changed to make them specific to these areas?
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
Well for the personal aspect I came up with a learning outcome to find out exactly what is needed and required for the
day to day running of a gym within the leisure and fitness industry.
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
That sounds a good idea. That seems more specific to your placement. Have you made any more changes? That you
think you would help you before you take on your placement?
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
Yes well when I decided where I was going for my placement I decided to alter my career learning objectives from
more general to more specific for the industry I want to work in.
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
What ways have you made it more specific and what industry do you want to work in?
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
I have made it more specific by saying in my learning outcomes the area that I want to work on for example I said I
would like to work in the management area of the gym that I will go to for my work experience.
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
That is good I think that will help you more now you have updated your learning outcomes.
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
Thanks. How are you getting on with your learning outcomes?
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
13. I have also updated my learning outcomes from pwbl. I thought they weren’t specific enough either. I also added that I
wanted to work in the adverting section of the business in particular while I will be on placement.
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
That sounds like a good idea. Do you want to achieve from looking in the advertising section? Where have you decided
to go on your placement?
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
I have decided to go to city bloc an indoor rock climbing place in Leeds which looks purity good. I want to be able to
find out what techniques sports businesses use to advertise their business effectively.
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
Cool that sounds good is there any other outcomes you have changed?
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
Yes I also added a learning outcome of developing my teamwork while on my work placement as I feel this is a very
important skill
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak
That good I think this will help you in your work placement.
20th June 2011
Stu Wright
Thanks yeah I think my learning outcomes did need changing
20th June 2011
Robert Sonczak

26th July 2011
Stu Wright
Hi rob, yeah my work placement is going well thanks just been doing a lot of advertising work for a charity event that
cit bloc want me to advertise which is really good. This has been a great way for me to look at my learning outcome of
advertising. How has your been going?
26th July 2011
Robert Sonczak
14. Yes mine has been going well I have been able to get involved in a lot of the different areas of the gym that I am quite
happy about as I wanted to be able to look at the different areas of work that I am going to do. What have you been
doing in the advertising and how has this helped you develop personally?
26th July 2011
Stu Wright
That good I have been making flyers and emailing Headway a charity that city bloc has chosen to be the charity that
they will donate the money towards for the event. This has helped me personally as I wanted to be able to find out
what I needed to do in order to be able to advertise successfully like sports businesses do. Which area are you most
happy about working in and why is it that?
26th July 2011
Robert Sonczak
Cool that well good to be able to have the opportunity to do all that for city bloc. I’m most happy about doing work
with the management as I was able to shadow the owner of the gym through a marketing campaign.
26th July 2011
Stu Wright
That good how do you think that helped you?
26th July 2011
Robert Sonczak
It helped me see what the stages I needed to do for the marketing which helped me as I want to work in a sports
industry
26th July 2011
Stu Wright
That good I will sounds like your placement is going well.
26th July 2011

Stu Wright
Hi rob,
How did you think your work experience went? Did you change any more learning outcomes after you finished?
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Hi, yes well when I started I decided that I could alter my career learning objective from a more general one to more
specific about the actual processes that take place within the organisation like the shadowing of the marketing meeting.
8th January 2012
15. Stu Wright
Ok that sounds good making it more specific. How did you think this helped your personal development?
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
In terms of my personal development I feel it will give me a greater understanding of the skills that I already possess
and the skills which I must attain or develop in order to give myself the best chance of getting a job within the industry
I want to work in
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
Yes I think that would be beneficial that you were able to get that out of the work placement and feel you have learnt
from that experience. Was there anything else that you changed or found useful?
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Yes I found the different areas that I was able to work in were useful because I was able to see all the areas that are
important in running a successful gym.
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
Yes that good how do you feel you have developed during the whole of the work based learning?
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
I feel that I have been able to work well in different environment and been able to perform well in different tasks in the
work placement. Also feel it’s been really useful actually doing the work placement for the experience of different roles
that are needed in the running of the day to day business.
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
Well your placement sounds like it was a really good experience that you have taken a lot from and you have
developed a lot of skills from it.
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Yes thanks I think it was really useful. How did yours go?
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
16. I felt that my work experience went really well I was able to cover all my learning outcomes in some way during the
work placement which I was pleased about but the main ones I feel I achieved were the creativity, advertising and
teamwork areas.
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Ah that sounds good. How come these were areas you felt you did well in?
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
Well I was able to do a lot on the advertising of the charity event such as having numerous meeting with people about
it such as business advisers and a university lecturer called Andy who said he would be able to help advertise the event.
I also emailed and was in contact with a lot of places that would possibly get involved in the event. I also feel that I
was creative in the way I was able to advertise as the emails and flyers looked very professional so my work supervisor
was very happy with that and my work supervisor also thought I worked well with all the members of staff.
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Well that good you were able to develop all those skills. How do you think you will use these in future?
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
I will use these skills by working well in a team in any situation and try and be creative in overcoming problems. I will
use adverting after university as this is a job I would like to go into after university.
8th January 2012
Robert Sonczak
Nice one well that sounds like you have been able to get a lot out of the placement especially in the advertising section
8th January 2012
Stu Wright
Cheers
