Schools and not-for-profit youth groups in Tyne and Wear are invited to be inspired, get imaginative and join the herd by being part of the biggest art event ever to take place across the region.
2. In 2016, over 160 Snowdog sculptures took over the streets, parks and
public spaces of Tyne and Wear. The result was Great North Snowdogs,
the most talked about event of the year and now is the chance for your
school to be part of its follow up trail!
Great North Snowdogs was presented by and raised funds for St Oswaldâs
Childrenâs Hospice in Newcastle. The hospice offers care to young people, children
and babies with incurable conditions from across the North East. The art trail, made
up of sculptures inspired by the much loved Snowdog character, attracted over
600,000 visitors and brought in over ÂŁ16.5 million to the local economy.
We are delighted to announce that 2019 will see another hospice led trail in Tyne
and Wear featuring an iconic childrenâs storybook character. Elmerâs Great North
Parade presented by St Oswaldâs Childrenâs Hospice in partnership with Wild in Art
and Andersen Press, will feature over 60 individually designed large Elmer elephants
and dozens of little Elmers to accompany them. The smaller sculptures will be
adopted, designed and painted by schools, nurseries, Brownie and Scouts and other
youth groups from across the region as part of Elmerâs Great North Parade learning
programme. The trail will bring together business and creative sectors with local schools
and communities, showcasing the rich, diverse cultural offering our region has â not
to mention the talent of our young artists of the future! It will become a highlight in
2019âs calendar of events, celebrating all that our wonderful county has to offer.

3. Elmerâs Great North Parade
Learning Programme
We invite your school, or group to be inspired, get imaginative
and join in with the BIGGEST art event ever to take place across
the region. We are encouraging you to decorate your very own little
Elmer and raise funds for St Oswaldâs Childrenâs Hospice. For 11 weeks
from August â November 2019, the public buildings, venues and
exciting spaces of Tyne and Wear will be a playground for your
beautifully created Elmers â showcasing the wealth of artistic talent
from the young people of the region.
Why Elmer?
Stand out from the herd with Elmer, the ambassador of friendship
and celebrating difference; things we strive to teach children as
they grow up in the modern world. Elmerâs story is one that
resonates with children and families alike: in the end, itâs best to
show your true colours. Elmerâs story also demonstrates that itâs ok
to sometimes want to be part of the herd, to âfit inâ but ultimately
people love you for what makes you âyouâ.
There is also a poignant connection to St Oswaldâs Hospice, where
we aim to make magical memories and create special moments for
the children and families. As we all know, Elephants never forget, and
even after a loved one has died, our family support team ensure young
people are supported in their grief and equipped to move forward.

What you said
âGirlguiding North Tyneside got involved with the
Snowdog trail as it was a fun event that would raise
the awareness of the hard work that St Oswaldâs does
and also raise vital funds. Each group across the county
created a patch to go onto the snow puppy showing what
Girlguiding North Tyneside meant to them. We had some
fantastic patches displaying fun, friendship and adventure.
During the trail, our members discovered new places
around their local area and loved finding our very own
snow puppy WAGGGS which stands for World
Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
Since the trail ended our Snowdog has been used
as a recruitment tool for Girlguiding North
Tyneside. WAGGGS has visited many offices, fairs
and libraries across the county to encourage people
to come along and join us.â
Joanne Hogg, Girlguiding North Tyneside
The children loved designing their Snowdogs and learning
new skills to decorate them. Being able to see their finished
works of art as part of the trail was a joy and the children
were very proud.
St. Oswaldâs is an amazing charity and as a school we
were very happy to support this fundraising campaign.
The project prompted the children to consider the needs
of others and how working together to raise money can
benefit others.
