Ethos Salon Spa & Barber was awarded the Volunteer of Distinction Award by SARC for their ongoing commitment to providing monthly haircutting, hairstyling, and manicure services to participants at Cosmopolitan Industries over the past seven years. Crystal Dahl-Wildemen, owner of Ethos Salon Spa & Barber, brings her staff every month to volunteer their salon services and build friendships with individuals at Cosmopolitan Industries. SARC Executive Director Amy McNeil presented the award to Ethos Salon Spa & Barber to recognize their extraordinary partnership and commitment to Cosmopolitan Industries.

Award to Ethos Salon Spa & Barber
for their commitment to providing
their time and services on a monthly
basis to participants at Cosmopolitan
Industries. Ethos Salon Spa & Barber
and Cosmopolitan Industries have
established a partnership over the last
seven years that positively impacts
participants at Cosmopolitan Indus-
tries through providing haircuts, hair-
styles, and manicures.
Crystal Dahl-Wildemen, owner of
Ethos Salon Spa & Barber, comes to
Cosmopolitan Industries every month
with her staff to volunteer salon ser-
vices and build friendships with the
individuals at Cosmopolitan Indus-
tries. Many individuals at Cosmo look
forward to their arrival each month.

2. GROWING FRIENDSHIP
Cosmo Market Mall Satellite partici-
pants had the opportunity to host mini
golf on October 25th
, 2016 with Prince
Phillip Grade 6 students. After a fun
filled morning of mini golfing, the
students returned to the Cosmo Market
Mall location where the participants
hosted the students and socialized over
cookies and iced tea before they had to
go back to school. The participants
and staff at Cosmo Market Mall would
like to pass on a huge THANK YOU
to Market Mall for allowing us to host
this event. We are looking forward to
the next time we can get together with
our friends from Prince Phillip School.

TYRELL SANDFLY-
WESTFIELD
Tyrell has had the pleasure of
playing the piano at two different
locations since April. He goes to
Christ Church on Wednesdays and
Elmwood Gym Mondays and
Thursdays. The participants and
staff enjoy having Tyrell play the
piano and everyone joins in by
singing or playing tambourines. One of our long time volunteers Sarah Vetter, has
been coming to play the piano with Tyrell every Tuesday. They perform for the
participants in Life Skills. Sarah and Tyrell have become a dynamic duo, not only
are they sharing music, but also stories about music and about themselves. It’s been
a real gift to our participants and we look forward to the continuation of Sarah's
involvement. Thank you Sarah! Tyrell’s goal this year was to have the opportunity
to play a Grand Piano. With help from the staff this goal was accomplished. They
visited Yamaha Piano Centre on Broadway where Tyrell got to sample the piano
and even play a song. Thank you Tyrell for all you do!

Work Day” on November 2, 2016.

3. CHRIST CHURCH—We celebrated Halloween with costumes, Halloween Bingo, a craft and lots of
laughs. Leah came to provide us with our Monday afternoon exercise group where we had music and
danced around. We had a great Halloween mural painted by our staff and participants that our friends at
Christ Church used on Halloween night when they handed out hot chocolate. We had a great day!
CONTRACTS—This year’s Halloween party was hosted by SpongeBob and his friends from Contracts. Everyone
helped to make the “under the sea” decor and games, transforming the area into a spectacular Halloween adventure.
SpongeBob and his friend Patrick served up snacks “crabby patty style” and everyone enjoyed their treats of “fish
and chips”.
The activities for the day included Pineapple bowling, Chumbucket sponge toss and pin the tie on SpongeBob. In
the afternoon, some participants watched a SpongeBob Movie, while others played games for prizes. As well, Con-
tracts hosted a Halloween dance in the afternoon. Everyone enjoyed their day and the party was a huge success.
LIFE SKILLS— On Monday, October 31, LSTD had our annual Halloween Party. The area was
decorated with a delightfully ghoulish air. We had witches, ghosts, bats, and even Frankenstein’s monster. Many
of our participants and staff wore a costume or dressed in orange and black. In the morning we carved pumpkins
to start the day’s festivities. We then had a sensory activity where we touched intestines (spaghetti), blood (jello),
eyeballs (peeled grapes), a cold dead hand (glove filled with ice), and green slime. Following this, everyone went
to Tracey’s office where Tracey handed out treat bags to everyone. After lunch, participants helped to cut out
cookies and bake them. Soon after, Stanley, Lucy and Karl from Sunnyside and Allen from Porteous Lodge
joined us. Participants then got to decorate and eat their cookies. This was followed by a dance which everyone
seemed to enjoy. Many participants were clapping and dancing. It was great to share our day with our visitors!
COSMO @ SHERBROOKE—The weeks leading up to Oct 31, 2016 were filled with discus-
sions and planning for the perfect costume. When Monday rolled around boy were we ready!
During the morning there was an endless parade of daycare kids in costume as they trick or
treated in the building and proudly showed off their costumes. During the afternoon we joined
our Sherbrooke community in the Tawaw center for a Big Halloween Masquerade Ball. We
danced to spooky tunes with the grade 6 iGen Students, Daycare kids and Elders. There were
door prizes, witty Halloween jokes and riddles as well as creepy cupcakes. It was a very busy
place with lots of incredible costumes. Some of us got tired so we went back to our program
room for Ice Scream sundaes. Harley the cat even stopped by for a treat! A little Halloween fun
was enjoyed by everyone.
ELMWOOD DAY PROGRAM—We started out our day with spooky music to get us in the mood and then made candy corn pud-
ding cups for later in the day. We carved 7 pumpkins earlier to decorate our room, which were donated from Jim McClements gar-
den. Delores loved carving the pumpkins. We made cute q-tip skeletons for our craft. After lunch we dressed up in costumes and
took lots of pictures. We had a vampire, Cleopatra, a sailor, an Elton John, and many more interesting costumes. We played Hallow-
een bingo, told Halloween jokes and had a blast. We can't wait to do it all again next year!
COSMO ARLINGTON— On Monday October 31st, Cosmo Arlington threw a Halloween
party! Participants made and bought decorations which they hung up around the area. Along
with dressing up in Halloween costumes, the Halloween party consisted of pumpkin carving,
bingo, charades and a dance at Elmwood. The gym at Elmwood was filled with participants and
staff from all of the Cosmo locations which made for a great reunion!

4. World’s Best Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
8 ounces unsalted butter
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla
1 large egg yolk
2 cups all-purpose flour
DIRECTIONS
1. Beat the butter, sugar, salt and vanilla together until smooth and creamy.
Mix in the egg yolk until well incorporated, scraping down the sides of the
bowl at least once. Add the flour and mix just until incorporated.
2. Scrape onto a lightly floured board and knead a few times, just until the
dough is smooth. Turn onto a sheet of plastic wrap and roll into a log, wrap
up and refrigerate for several hours or freeze.
3.Before baking, preheat the oven to 325°F. Line your baking sheets with
parchment.
4.Slice the dough into slices about 1/8" thick and place them on the sheets
about an inch apart (they won't be spreading very much, but they need air
room around each cookie). Bake until JUST beginning to turn golden around
the edges, about 16-18 minutes.
Note: you can do many things with these cookies. You could roll the dough
out and cut shapes. You could make them and then dip them half into choco-
late. You could just make them and eat them, which is my favorite. What-
ever you do, they will be delicious. (www.food.com)
GROUNDS KEEPING
FINISHED FOR THE SEASON
It was another suc-
cessful year of
Grounds Keeping. The
season wrapped up on
October 28th
. Even the
early snowfall could
not dampen the spirits
of the crew as once the
snow started melting
we were back out fin-
ishing the properties
that were not covered
in snow. There were 12 main participants that were part of the regular crew
throughout the season and 6 that helped to provide coverage when needed.
They are the heart and soul of what we do and the job coaches would just
like to say ... Thank You for your hard work and dedication to the job.
UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN
Since their inception in 1959, the United Way of
Saskatoon and Area has invested more than $85 mil-
lion back into the community. The United Way thrives
on bettering communities and many lives by focusing
on three areas: “From poverty to possibility,”
“Building strong communities,” and “Helping kids be
all that they can be.” The United Way builds strong
partnerships that engage members of the community
to offer resources that are sustainable for those in
need. The Campaign is the largest fundraiser for the
United Way and last year, the Campaign raised over
$6 million to generously give back to the community.
Cosmo benefits from this investment as we are one of
the many United Way funded agencies. Our volunteer
program at Cosmo is exclusively funded by the United
Way.
On October 24th
2016, we held our kick off to the
Campaign on our Professional Development Day . We
had Carol Ratcliffe, a loaned representative from the
United Way speak to staff about the Campaign. Our
guest speaker, Robin Mitchell from Crocus Coopera-
tives shared how Crocus Cooperatives is a United
Way funded program and the impact the United Way
has had on Crocus over the years. The goal this year
for Cosmo was to raise $3000.00 and we exceeded our
goal by raising $3194.00!
Thank you to all donors who made a donation towards
this year’s United Way Community Campaign!
TRANSPORTATION FOR
EXTREME WEATHER
With the cold weather fast approaching, this is a re-
minder about transportation for extreme weather. When
the actual temperatures reaches -30C, or the wind-chill
factor reaches -48C, all wheelchair runs will be can-
celled. This includes Cosmo wheelchair vans and First
Student will not operate the lift on its wheelchair or
Combo buses.
First Student will operate their ambulatory buses during
these temperatures.
Cosmo will continue to remain open and participants
may choose not to attend if they feel the weather is too
cold.

5. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT COSMO
DECEMBER and JANUARY
Dear Parents, Family members and Caregivers:
The holiday season is quickly approaching, and we reflect upon the interesting year that we
have all experienced at Cosmo.
The month of DECEMBER will be a busy month with a variety of special happenings:
Friday, December 2nd
, all Participants at the various locations will be enjoying a lovely
Christmas dinner followed up with an afternoon of entertainment. Transportation will
be as usual.
Monday, December 5th
, all Participants will be DEPARTING for home by 1:30pm to
allow for a general staff meeting.
All Staff will meet at Cosmo Centre at 2:00pm for a general staff meeting.
Friday, December 16th
, the Board of Directors has approved a Christmas cash gift for
all participants which will be deposited in your bank account this day.
We are pleased to advise everyone the status of the rebuild. Construction is progressing
nicely, and the painting, flooring and cabinets will be completed in the coming weeks. The
date for Participants to return to the Main Cosmo Centre is January 3, 2017.
As you are already aware, Cosmo is CLOSED on December 26th
and 27th
.
COSMO HAS A SPECIAL REQUEST OF ALL HOMES:
We really need Participants to remain home December 28, 29 and 30th
, if at all possible, in
order to allow staff to complete the magnitude of work entailed to move everything from its
various locations and get set up for the return of participants in January. Please call the
Transportation Coordinator to advise us of your plan for your participant(s) during these
three days.
