INTRODUCTION
Why Innovate?
Innovation Creates Market Leaders
Research shows that 60-70% of the products that are now successful, are
not older than 3 years. With the modern market demanding an increasingly
shorter time-to-market, manufacturers cannot afford to sit still. There will
always be competition and achieving or maintaining the position of market
leader will require change.
Innovation Requires Attention
Many companies struggle to reserve the time and resources to innovate.
Often this is caused by the daily routine of operational activities, perceived
lack of urgency or a shortage of knowledge, skills or capacity.
No Time to Innovate?
We can help you focus your innovation activities by bringing in additional
capacity, knowledge, experience and specialists. We also offer a fresh
way of thinking, bring in experience from other fields and work with proven
innovation methods and tools to reduce innovation associated risks.
Opportunities for innovation
Innovation topics to achieve a better market position can be: a shorter time-
to-market, a new market introduction, improved technologies, cost-down
and better price-quality ratio, adjusting a better look and feel to technically
sound products and increasing the ease of use or reducing human error.

Machines and products with convincing designs sell
better.
In today’s market design is no longer optional. As
functional differences between products become
smaller, good design has become essential in gaining
the competitive advantage.
Design plays a large role in defining the user
experience of a product. The exterior of a product can
be used to improve usability, but can be also used to
communicate product qualities such as hygiene and
safety. Even feelings of pride or recognition can be
induced.
Using our systematic design approach, products are
created in several clearly defined phases, resulting
in client specific designs that suit your company and
market.
With our strategic partners we can also produce
machine coverings for prototypes and small series.

UX-DESIGN FOR INDUSTRY
User Experience Design (UX Design) focuses on improving
the physical as well as the visual interactions with the machine
or product. Good UX Design can be crucial for a product’s
success.
This is especially true for markets in which UX Design has
become common, such as consumer products and websites.
Shown on the right is an infographic of our process of user
experience design.
UX DESIGN FOR INDUSTRY

For better products and machines
Value Engineering allows you to develop better
products. Products that contain only those
features that are required by the customer.
This is the real value of the product, and the
one that the customer is willing to pay for.
Value Engineering is used during the (re-)
design of a product in order to optimize the
relation between features and cost price.
Value Engineering is active on multiple levels
(functional, structural and detailed) allowing
for either a cost price reduction or an increase
in value.
Areas such as design & styling and user
experience are also covered in the Value
Engineering process.
Result:
• Products without unnecessary features
(cost price reduction);
• Products with added value (tailored to the
customer’s wishes).

HEAVY DUTY
Hitec’s Power PRO2700 is the first of the
company’s new line of Continuous Power
Supplies. The new design marks a significant
change from open to fully enclosed systems.
This allows noise levels to be reduced whilst
maintaining serviceability and small footprint.
The resulting design highlights the machines
most important component, the centrally
located generator. The orange arrows also
double up as dynamic status indicators,
pulsating in standby mode and fully lighting
up during power production. This cleverly
links the aesthetics with the machine’s core
functionality.

Initially wanting to reduce production time
in their own factory, cutting tool specialist
Alesa AG developed a machine capable of
combining both the cutting and chamfering
steps involved in the production of circular
saws.
With the Denta Combi 160, Alesa AG now
presents a grinding machine for producing
circular saws and is thereby expanding its
range of activity.
The initial prototype had the desired functional
performance, however lacked in overall
appeal. As a proud Swiss company, the
design had to communicate precision and
quality. The resulting design is reserved and
timeless, yet innovative for its market.

That design & styling should automatically
result in expensive products is a common
prejudgement and can be avoided.
Often it is the disengagement between design
and engineering that is at fault, with ultimately
the product design taking the blame. Or the
design is simply modified to the point that
cost price targets are met, but the design no
longer has any resemblance to the original
concept.
However, luckily not all companies are willing
take that route. Voortman Steel Machinery was
extremely fond of its new product design and
required a solution that would not sacrifice the
design in order to achieve its cost price targets.
Using a combination of Value Engineering and
Design & Styling, IDpartners was able to develop
a new covering that combined the unique styling
elements of the original covering but at a cost
price that was acceptable for Voortman.

FTNON’s new onion peeler is all about yield,
hygiene and usability. For the design of the
covering simply adding a shell was not enough.
The original tube frame was replaced by a sheet
metal frame and by combining parts and features
the machine is now easier to set up and clean.
These qualities are also communicated in the
styling of the machine. The integrated design with
its clear cut lines provides FTNON with a machine
that is clearly as innovative on the outside as it is
technically on the inside.

Redprot®, developed by A.E.R.O. medi, is a
colouring for proteins and is suitable for pollen.
When pollen are visible through colouring, they can
be determined and counted, allowing a possible
hay fever message to be compiled. Manually
processing pollen is substantially more time-
consuming.
IDpartners developed a microscope for A.E.R.O.
medi that can automatically process 10 samples.
The device focuses automatically and makes
images of the samples. Specific software then
assesses the image and creates an automatic
report. This report is then used by weather services
to send out a hay fever message.
We worked together closely with eXScience GmbH,
who were responsible for developing the software.
In the future, this device can also be used to
assess other samples.
