Irfan 10E – Comparative Essay
Essay Question
What does the author want us to think of in the theme of survival in The Enemy and The Knife of
never letting go?
This piece of writing will consist of two different authors who wrote two different books. The author
of young adult novel, The Knife of Never Letting Go, goes by the name of Patrick Ness which he
published on May 2008. Ness was born on October 17, 1971. He is an American–born British
author, journalist, and lecturer who lives in London. The Knife of Never Letting Go is about Todd
Hewitt who is the only boy left in Prentisstown, a small settlement on 'New World' where all boys

In The Knife of Never Letting Go Aaron is in constant pursuit of Todd and his friends. Aaron ends
up stabbing Todd, and kidnaps Viola. After gaining consciousness, Todd rescues Viola, by choosing
to sacrifice his dog Manchee. The pair both escape on a boat. In this sudden incident, the author
shows survival can causes the reader to be on the fence. Ness has gradually built up the relationship
Todd has with his dog but chose a girl who he barely knows to save. It was one or the other, but the
captivity of Viola would be better for Aaron. "And Aaron wrenches his arms and there's a CRACK
and a scream and a cut–off yelp that tears my heart in two forever and forever". The author wants
the reader to think about how impossible decisions have to be made for the greater good and to
survive. This incident is somewhat similar as Small Sam being captured by grown ups from The

Swot Analysis : Go Green
Quantitative techniques are mostly employed by the businesses whether small or large for obtaining
a clear picture of the stated problem or given situation. The quantitative techniques help the
managers in decision making and analyzing the future prospects of their business. Businesses use
various mathematical and statistical techniques for analyzing the data gathered for making good
decisions which are crucially important for their success (Murdock, 2015). Quantitative techniques
that are most frequently used include correlation analysis, regression analysis, linear programming,
factor analysis and data mining (Hall, 2015). Go Green is a franchise business which is planning to
open a new store for selling house plants, lawn and accessories for home gardens. The study will use
annual net sales, size of sales district, square feet of floor display in stores, value of inventory in
store and advertising expenses for analyzing the performance of its 12 existing stores. This report
aims at analyzing the business of "Go Green" by using various quantitative techniques for
determining the prospects of its growth and expansion in the market. The study will make use of
quantitative techniques for analyzing the data collected on six variables. The report will make use of
statistical techniques such as graphs, correlation analysis and regression analysis for analyzing the
data. Graphs will illustrate the visual presentation of data. The relationship between the variables

Similarities Between The Fault In Our Stars And This Star...
Are people naive to accept love knowing it will cause them pain later? And just how do you deal
with the discomforting pain? John Greene, the author of "The Fault In Our Stars", once wrote a
daring, yet romantic novel referring to the negative connotation of love. The two individuals
throughout the story fought a tough battle, but was it for sickness or the sake of love?
In this situation, "The Fault In Our Stars" and "This Star Won't Go Out" share many similar
qualities. The novels contribute common interest of symbolism throughout. For example, each novel
dealt with friendship and emotion. Both adolescents were quite conservative as they felt that they
troubled the lives of others surrounding them. Soon later the story introduces more characters

Public Schools Vs. Sex Schools
Public Schools v. Single– Sex Schools
Did you ever think about the people that your children are surrounded by throughout the school day?
If they are bullied, left alone or fit in? Did you ever consider putting them in a different school?
Education is very important. Some of the reasons education is important are quite simple. Education
is to better a person 's self knowledge needed later in life. We start education at such a young age
because children have a different level of common knowledge. Students learn at different paces.
Some children are smart when they are little and they know how to say their ABC's, know how to
add and subtract and know how to write their name. Other children struggle with even knowing how

Schooling and education as a whole, whether public or single–sex, is very important. However,
there has always been a struggle between single–sex schools and public schools. Public schools
started in 1821. The first public school started in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of the 19th
century. Before that, single–sex schools were very common. From then on, there has been fights
between different people arguing whether children should go to public schools or single–sex
schools. Children should go to public schools. They should only go to public schools because they
need interaction with different peers, learn how to deal with real world problems and learn the
differences between boys and girls.
One of the main reasons children should go to public schools is because they need to interact with
different peers. During school, girls and boys were thought to be equal (Single, A). However, that
was not always the case. Boys were cared for more than girls were, until Title IX stepped in. Title IX
is the revision of a landmark 1970s law to make sure equal access to education for girls was given
(Single, A) . After that law was passed in 1972, there were limiting single–sex schools and both
genders were looked after equally (Single, A).
"The people on the feminist– leaning side of the debate see the conversation about a boys' crisis as a
strategy to advance the single–sex education agenda. I'm not sure that is correct. I don't think the

The Go-Between
The Go–Between
1. Overview
This book is a memory story: a man in his sixties looks back on his boyhood of the middle class boy
recalling the events that took place on a summer visit to an aristocratic family in Norfolk in the
1900's. The author uses double narrative, the young Leo's actions told by the older Leo, and it shows
us how it has affected his life
Firsttly, I'll introduce the main characters, their functions and relationships, then I'll give you a small
summary of the story, followed by the main themes and their symbolic elements, and finally the
style of the book. Leo Colston has two different aspects, he's the narrator of the book, a man of
about sixty year old, and he's a "dried up" man inside. Leo is a young boy of ... Show more content

Disillusioned, he took his revenge changing one of the messages. The day of Leo's birthday, Marian
is late and her mother goes to look for her: the lovers end up to be discovered. Pregnant, Marian is
humiliated in front of everybody. Ted committed suicide. Leo is disappointed about life, fidelity and
love. Remembering that summer, he wants to know what happened to Marian and goes back to
Brandham Castle. There, he's charged of his last message: telling to Marian's grandson how
beautiful and true her love with Ted was. The narrator has never married; perhaps does he still love
her?
There are a lot of important themes in this book, the most evident is the discovery of sexuality and
of the grown ups world of a teenage boy, the loss of his innocence. He is scarred sexually and
emotionally by his summer experience. At the end of the book, he has turned into an emotionally
hollow adult. Another main theme is past and memory, L. P. Hartley begins The Go–Between: with
"The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there."
This book is memory like in The Glass Menagerie; it is a look through the dusty memory of a sixty
years old man. Another key theme is class distinction and its warping effects upon the life of one
small boy. He's from a disadvantaged family and is invited in an aristocratic family. The father and
the fiancé are aware of the girl's affair with the farmer, but do nothing about it. They are

Similarities Between Of Mice And Men And The Knife Of...
How do the authors present sexism and gender inequality in 'of mice and men' and 'the knife of
never letting go'?
Introduction
Throughout both novels the theme of women being perceived as a lesser to men is ceaseless. I think
that both these novels show us the flaws in our society from two different periods of time, in 1937
when 'of mice and men' was written, to 2008 when 'The knife of never letting go' was written. But
how coincident they are, and how the problem of gender inequality and sexism has always been a
flaw in the world, and still is today in the 21st century.
Of mice and men by John Steinbeck is a touching novel that reaches deep into our hearts. It is a tale
of two migrant farm workers by the names of Lenny and George struggling ... Show more content

As he is escaping through the swamp, he hears 'nothing', for the first ever time. He then realises that
the silence is coming from a girl, she is the first girl Todd has ever seen.
Both novels show the hierarchy of men and women and how gender inequality and sexism is
something that is so recent, but has also been a really big problem and debate for a very long time,
and that maybe we haven't addressed the problem completely. They both show us difficult
relationships, with all the blame usually being put on the woman even if she had done nothing
wrong.
Section 1– instantaneously judging
The authors are both male, and therefore may find it easier to relate to the male characters, however
coming from two different time perspectives their representation and vision of women is
surprisingly similar. The main similarity being the theme of women being instantaneously 'judged'
by the male characters, without even getting to know them. A quote from 'of mice and men' to
support this is: "don't you dare take a look at that bitch, i dont care what she says and what she does.
I seen 'em poison before, but i never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her" (page 54). In this
quote george is warning lennie of Curley's wife. We see sexism here because not only is george
calling her a 'bitch', a derogatory term to call a female, he is also assuming that because she comes
across as a flirt she is a woman who will get men into

The Go Between By Ali Smith Summary
''The Go–Between'' is a short story, written by Ali Smith in 2009. This short story is based on the
United Nations' adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ali Smith finds inspiration
in an article about the right to freedom of movement, which also is the theme and case in this short
story.
Many people try to travel from Africa to the south of Europe, due to poverty, war or hunger. This
short story deals with the fact that everyone has their human rights, and they have the freedom of
movement. They are free to travel anywhere they want.
The narrator in this short story is a first person limited narrator, because he only knows about his
own feelings and thoughts, but at the same time he describes his surroundings. The narrator ... Show

He fact that the African man lost half his ear and one finger on his way to Spain, indicates that Spain
does everything to keep refugees from Africa out of their country.
The style of writing is with short sentences, which makes the short story seem boring, but at the
same time the narrator is humoristic and jokes about who he is e.g. ''The Cameroon swimmer.
Philosophical Professor Me. Border Crosser Extraordinaire''.
These short sentences give the reader a view into most African people's life. Their life is often
boring because they do not have much to spend their time on, due to high unemployment and
poverty. They do not have the same facilities like the most of us have in Europe. The humoristic part
of the narrator's language combined with the short sentences and this following quote, creates an
image of what a life like an African refugee is.
''I'm a small, slight man. I'm not a big man. I'm lean and slight. My stature is slight. My coat is a bit

Similarities Between Go Set A Watchman And To Kill A...
In July of 1960, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was published bringing immediate
success as a classic of modern American literature. Fifty–five years later, Go Set a Watchman was
released though it was written in 1957. Both novels include the same characters, however Go Set a
Watchman took place in a setting two decades after To Kill a Mockingbird. In Go Set a Watchman,
Jean Louise returns home twenty years later to find her noble role model and "beloved father" is
now affiliated with "raving anti–integration and anti–black crazies" (Kakutani). While Atticus Finch
in To Kill a Mockingbird reflected aspects of Harper Lee's life, his character in Go Set a Watchman
represents a more realistic view of racism which demonstrates accuracy to historical context in the
1930's.
The Ku Klux Klan was established in 1866 and within four years it had extended to the majority of
the southern states ("Ku Klux Klan"). In Alabama, the Ku Klux Klan alleged to have over 150,000
members in the 1920's ("Ku Klux Klan in Alabama from 1915–1930"). The Ku Klux Klan is not
mentioned in To Kill a Mockingbird though it had been known in every southern state. During Lee's
childhood, it would be impossible for her not to hear of the group. To Kill a Mockingbird leaves this
crucial group out while in Go Set a Watchman the Ku Klux Klan is a defining element of the
character of Atticus. Most members of the group can be described as "middle–aged, working class,
Protestant white men" who

The role of these two friends is different in that Herbert grows up with Pip and they are much closer
than Leo and Marcus. For example, Enough I saw my own feelings in Herbert's face, and, not least
among them my, repugnance towards the man who had done so much for me.' This demonstrates
how Herbert has helped Pip and that he feels very close to him as he sees his own feelings in his
face.
Throughout the Summer Leo is used as a playmate and someone to entertain Marcus so that he is
kept from bothering the adults, so in this way he is used. The relationship between Herbert and Pip
is more intimate, as they live together and help each other out. We also learn about them together as
young men not just as boys. The similarity between the two friends of Pip and Leo is that they teach
both boys a great deal about how the upper class live. In Great Expectations Herbert teaches Pip that
you can be a kind gentleman and don't have to be very rich. In contrast to this Marcus teaches Leo to
throw his clothes on the floor for the servants to pick up and to be a superficial gentleman.
The men that give the boys examples of how to be a gentleman are Drummle and Hugh. In Great
Expectations Dickens tries to show that there are two types of gentleman. Joe is the first example as

Author's use their writing to discuss death in different ways. Robert Browning's poem "Porphyria's

authors have drastic differences when talking about death. Browning discusses how killing is a

fighting death. In one of Robert Browning's most unsettling dramatic monologues, "Porphyria's
Lover," Browning tells a story of a man killing his lover in order to preserve her love for him. When

In "Porphyria's Lover" the main theme is power. Browning leaves us clues about the theme
throughout the poem. To start with, when the speaker is describing the weather outside "It tore the
elm–tops down for spite," suggests how powerful the storm is. The whole poem the speaker is
fighting for power against Porphyria. At first he lets her keep all the power, but when she is not
expecting it, he kills her to gain full power over her. The speaker reduces Porphyria to an object, a
corpse that he could manipulate. Though in "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" the main
themes are mortality and transience. Thomas knows that death is inevitable but he wants his father
and all the elderly that are, close to death to fight it off for as long as possible. Thomas conveys the
theme of transience by comparing how good men's lives are flying by. Thomas says, "Good men, the
last wave by, crying how bright / Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay," good men's
lives are passing away easily. All of their accomplishments will die out and everything they were

In the Jewish tradition, the New Year is received with a time of introspection and reflection to take
stock of the previous year before moving into the new one. This is done during the first ten days,
starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur. These are commonly known as the Days
of Awe or the Days of Repentance.
All religious undertone aside, I like the idea of reviewing and revisiting life to let go of what no
longer serves us–no matter what time of the year. It 's too easy to get used and attached to things that
hold us back, be they objects, relationships, jobs, situations, routines, or beliefs.
The ego–mind likes familiarity and creating a sense of repetition to feel safe and in control. This is
crucial when we are children and need to feel safe, but its value should decrease as we grow up and
understand that being in control is really an illusion, especially if we want to continue growing–
emotionally, mentally, and spiritually–to master our life.
Life is about being in the present and opening up to the

As children, our imaginations generate flawless worlds. After she leaves Hailsham, Ruth's
dimension deviated from the path her society set. Her aspiration of working in an office with
"gleaming equipment" and "chair with swivels and castors" opposes the reality of subsequent organ

she begins to accept that her dream was unrealistic. In fact, all Hailsham's children desire a

different than my town in Germany, Solingen. It's a not a big city but it is a very beautiful one with
many small streets and small houses around them. I had even the impression that the life in
Germany was more exciting than in Phoenix. Now I'm living in Phoenix for over one year and I can

the stores or places where you could have go out were pretty far away from our apartment. Mostly I
needed a car to go out somewhere. The buses are stationed only on few places and they arrive in
very long intervals. So after a time, we realized that we had to buy a car. In contrast to Phoenix,
during our time in Solingen, we used the car mostly for longer trips. The whole city was connected
with bus lines and they were coming to the bus stations every ten minutes. If we had to go
somewhere in the city, we used mostly the buses. We saved our gas money and were there always on

While in Phoenix you have problems to find the time to go out with your friends, in Solingen, I was

The Go Between By Ali Smith
The short story " The go – between was written to celebrate the 60th anniversary of human rights.
Ali Smith got a lot of inspiration from Article 13, which says; the right of freedom to movement.
The short story " The Go– Between" is written by Ali Smith and is about the main character, which
is a 33 years old man, who helps people get over the border fence to Spain. He is born and raised in
Cameroon, but now he lives in Northern Morocco. The short story tells us that the refugees who are
denied the right to cross the border gets help by the main character in the short story because he is
opposed to people when they come to Europe they are sent back right away and they have no
chances to seek asylum, He also uses Article 14 and says that everyone has the right to seek asylum

it is a big problem and it is a big topic in Europe to come into a new country. It is something that all
countries should focus on and that it is almost impossible for people from outside getting into

Human rights. A bitter, yet ironic, tale about a world we all know, but still refuse to accept or deal

For instance, as I mentioned in the beginning of this analysis, the man describes himself as a "small,
slight man", which is followed up by him stating "The Cameroon Swimmer. Philosophical Professor
Me." This strongly indicates that the protagonist is living a tragic life, and that he has to keep a
positive and happy mind–set in order to cope with reality.
He is living a life between two completely different worlds; Europe and Africa. Physically he does
not belong anywhere anymore, he is stuck between two continents. This is emphasized by the title of
the short story, "The Go–Between", because no matter what the protagonist does, he can only go to a
place in between. With that said, I believe that Ali Smith's intention with the story is to shine a light
on the ironic fact that we are celebrating an occasion that is still so far away from deserving
celebration. Her short story is an ironic observation of the lacks in executing these rights, even 60
years after they were implemented. After reading this story you are very startled, and you get a
sudden profound gratitude for living in a country where these rights are as familiar as the bike–ride
to school. It is not fair that some countries are not respecting these rights, and that is what Ali Smith
is telling us through "The

The Go Between
In his novel 'The Go Between' L.P Hartley's writes that "the past is a foreign country ; they do things
differently". Even though I agree to a point with Hartley I cannot fully agree because in order for us
to move forward we must use the past as an important learning experience for us. Due to this I
recommend that more emphasis be placed on history in schools and more reforms be made in the
curriculum . The following suggestions are important for the realization of these reforms for
example, more importance should be placed on lessons in school through early learning i.e. at the
early stages of school, teaching should involve more documentary evidence and finally educational
excursions should be organized more frequently .

How Does Adam Kraar Create Tension In Love On The B Line

The B–Line over Lorimer Street Many relationships in today's present day have small arguments.
Some are over other people, their past life, honesty, or committing to the relationship one hundred
percent. In the play "Love on the B–Line", by Adam Kraar, the biggest conflict between the two
characters Robbie and Marie is that Marie does not want to go back to Robbie's place with him.
What is the big reason that she does not want to? Marie is not open with Robbie as to why she is
deciding to not go, by her doing that, Robbie just insists more and more. The play "Love on the B–

Both characters, Marie and Robbie, are in a situation that is relevant to couples today which make
the play have a tone of intensity. Marie reveleaing that she is afraid to fall deep in love with Robbie
like she has in her past with someone else creates a strong sense of pity from Robbie because he was
continually insisting for her to go back to his house with him to stay the night. Robbie immediately
responded to Marie with "It's okay" (Kraar, 321) Marie also revealed that she was just afraid that
Robbie was using her, the understanding and feelings of these two characters are very compelling to

Essay Comparing The Go-Between And Lolita
The author's narrative point of views portrayed in The Go–Between by L.P. Hartley and in Lolita by
Vladimir Nabokov influences the reader's response and interpretation in different ways. While in
The Go–Between, the story is narrated by the child–victim Leo Colston, and in Lolita the narrator is
Humbert Humbert, the adult stepfather who sexually and emotionally abuses Lolita. This essay will
summarize the different points of views by both narrators and how the reader response to and
interprets these novels. Was Leo Colston just a child–victim of adult manipulators? Is Humbert
Humbert just seen as a heartless monster who takes advantage of a young female child?

Nabokov also allows Humbert to narrate the details of his life with Lolita, in which the story
illustrates the difficulties intrinsic in an attempt to order familiarity through art.
As Humbert tries to develop an ideal vision of his relationship with Lolita, he manipulates the
readers' responses to him in order to gain sympathy and to affect a deferment of judgment. Humbert
presents a poetic representation of Lolita and his life with her. Humbert admits "I hope I am
addressing myself to unbiased readers." (285)
In an effort to provide himself with a justification for his fixation with Lolita, Humbert details his
relationship with Annabel, Lolita's "predecessor" at the beginning of the novel. Of his teenager
relationship with Annabel, he writes "the spiritual and the physical had been blended in us with a
perfection that must remain incomprehensible to the matter–of–fact, crude, standard–brained
youngsters of today." (14) It is suggested that the reader will thus understand the beauty of that
relationship, as well as his relationship with Lolita. In the end, though, catastrophic realism emerges

The Go Between and Spies
"THE MAIN CHARACTERS IN THE GO–BETWEEN AND SPIES ARE SOCIALLY
OPRRESSED ARE SOCIALLY OPPRESSSED" How far do you agree with this statement? Social
Oppression is a main theme explored throughout the two tragic novels, The Go–Between and Spies.
Throughout the novels, L.P. Hartley and Michael Frayn successfully convey the idea, through the
use of their main characters, the effects of social oppression and class divide. Using many
techniques they show how class and oppression had power over the people of the Victorian era. And
even after the turn of the century, People were still trapped in the shadows of the past era. Both
novels are told as flashbacks taking us through the lives of two main protagonists. The climax of

Zodiac Symbols In The Go-Between By L. P. Hartley
The Go–Between by L.P. Hartley features the narrator, Leo Colston who has found and is rereading
his childhood diary from the summer of 1900. This summer is paramount in Leo's personal
development and the shaping of his views of the world. In the summer of 1900, Leo was
approaching his thirteenth birthday and staying with his friend and schoolmate Marcus Maudsley at
Marcus' family's estate, Brandham Hall. There, Leo is forced to confront class, love, and loss of
innocence throughout the course of this summer. Leo's story is retold when he finds the diary that he
kept that summer. Leo's diary entries show his affinity for Zodiac symbols, which was inspired by

growing in the shed that Ted and Marian would use to rendezvous. Leo ultimately decides not to use
the nightshade as it is deadly. However, the nightshade does cause Leo to fall ill and he has to go

the shed. "It was then that we saw them, together on the ground, the Virgin and the Water–carrier,
two bodies moving like one." (Hartley. 305). Leo holds himself partially responsible for the death of
Ted due to his magic spell that was only meant to break–up the couple. However, Leo ends up

In the authors introduction, the author made it clear that his intended purpose for displaying the
characters, Marian and Ted, was for the reader to judge them harshly, but at the end the reader felt
sorry and sympathetic for the characters. The author, when writing The Go–between, wanted the
reader not to know which character to feel sorry for. In contrast, the reader said it was quite obvious
that Marian was the one Hartley disapproved. They saw that she represented life's riches and
complexity. The reader was sympathetic because of the situation Marian was in. Marian was under
great pressure from her mother to marry a Lord Trimingham, a man she does not want to marry.

Summary Of Go-Betweens And The Colonization Of Brazil
In history, what often occurred was that influential individuals who occupied the middle ground
during exploration were forgotten. These third–party individuals are called go–betweens and they
helped Europeans connect with different cultural groups. The 16th century brought enormous
change by the Portuguese to the indigenous groups who lived in Brazil. The colonization of Brazil
owes its success to transactional, representational, and physical/biological go–betweens. The book,
Go–betweens and the Colonization of Brazil, written by Alida Metcalf explores the roles of these
go–betweens and their impact. When the Portuguese first landed in Brazil it was by accident, they
were aiming for India. The admiral Pedro Alvares Cabral anchored his ships off the coast and he
remained in Brazil for only ten days. Cabral understood that they needed to proceed with caution
because everything they did was based on what occurred when the Portuguese first went to Africa.
Cabral understood the dangers of not having go–betweens in a new land. Even though Cabral had
many translators on his ships, they did not have anyone that were from Brazil. The translators were
Africans or Afro–Portuguese. This leads into the first type of go–betweens mentioned in the book
and it is transactional.
The most easily recognized of the go–betweens are the transactional. These go–betweens were
translators, negotiators, and cultural brokers. They had the power to shift their loyalties and create
complex relationships. Cabral had brought two dozen criminal exiles on his journey and because
they did not have any translators he left two criminals at their first stop. When the criminals were
left, their job was to learn the Indian customs, language, and culture. This showed the long–term
interest that they had in Brazil. This laid the foundation for the creation of translators for future use.
When criminals were left their job was to learn the Indian customs, which shows the long–term
interest they had.
Many of the first transactional go–betweens are unknown to historians because of being semiliterate
and not writing about their experiences. By the middle of the 16th century, one group of go–
betweens that appeared were the Norman interpreters. They

Disillusionment In Twelfth Night
Disappointment and disillusionment are both prominent themes presented by L.P Hartley in The
Go–Between. Published in 1953 although set at the beginning of the 20th century, The Go–Between
demonstrates how a young boys deceived and clouded perception of life leads to a disillusioned old
man, who can't recover from the distressing events of the first summer of 1900. In Shakespeare's
Twelfth Night disappointment is exhibited through many characters whom experience the torments
of a love that is not reciprocated. Furthermore, Thomas Hardy explores similar themes in his poetry
via the use of specific literary techniques, such as metaphors, and pathetic fallacy to demonstrate
how the disillusionment of the speakers past has led to a disappointed ... Show more content on

The speakers misconceptions of another woman's feelings towards himself first emerge when he
believes that "her gloom within at the lack of [him] seemed matching [his] at the lack of her", the
repetition of "lack" in both lines shows that the speaker wants to relate to the woman, as well as
wanting the woman to relate to him. Hardy's use of the expression "seemed" is a foregrounding
technique to imply to the reader that nothing is as it seems due to the speaker's disillusionment
regarding the unreciprocated feelings between himself and the woman. Disappointment surfaces
when the speaker notices that there "was glee within." rather than "gloom"; the utilisation of the
caesura represents the speakers moment of realisation thus the moment that his illusions of the
woman transform into sheer disappointment at the fact that he is now going to be "alone". The cause
of the speaker's disappointment is similar to Leo's in The Go–Between as he foolishly believes
Marian has feelings for him, until he experiences his moment of realisation upon reading "darling,
darling, darling" demonstrating that the cause of their

The Correlation Between Influencing Organization Culture...
The correlation between influencing organization culture and leaderships go hand and hand.
Organizational culture refers to the beliefs and values that exist in an organization and to the beliefs
of the staff and the foreseen value of their work that will influence their work ethic. Schein (1992,
2004) defines the culture of a group or organization as shared assumptions and beliefs about the
world and their place in it, the nature of time and space, human nature, and human relationships.
(pg. 326) On the other hand, leadership provides the vision and helps the organization move in the
direction to accomplish the best or the organization and the employees. It is important to understand
the relationship between organizational culture and leadership and how they influence each other.
Yukl states that "by changing the culture of an organization, top management can indirectly
influence the motivation and behavior of organization members. Research on organizational culture
provides further insight into the dynamics of transformational leadership and the processes by which
a leader's charisma may become institutionalized." (pg. 326) In the article, it talks about four ways
to influence organizational culture Programs, Systems, Structures, and Cultural Forms.
Design of management systems and programs
Criteria for rewards and personnel decisions
Design of structure and facilities

Differences Between A Sound Of Thunder Book And Movie

major difference in between both is that eckels doesn't go to time safari alone. He takes a friend that

Ways Hartley and Frayn present Childhood in The...
In the Go–Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person
narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo's vivid imagination, the themes of
growing up and self–awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of
Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person
narrative which encapsulates young Leo's fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the
dawning of a new era, 'My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming
true'(Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet

p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator's ability to comment and reflect on his child–self effectively
emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and
suspense throughout the novel, 'now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way' (Chapter
1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of
childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he 'went away...the
relationship between Ted and Marian would cease' (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is
able to analyse his feelings, 'I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and
frightened' (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively
conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner,
whereas child narrator's naïve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis,
believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers' affair, 'I had attacked them first'
(Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo's predicament
as he possesses a common child–like sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that
he is merely facilitating the relationship between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also
presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees

The Go-Between And Lolita Are Two Novels That Challenged
The Go–Between and Lolita are two novels that challenged childhood innocence and sexual
experience. Childhood innocence is tested by child life experiences. Innocence can be depicted as
the quality of ignorance. In this case, childhood innocence is portrayed through the ignorance of sex
and maturation. Sexual Relationships between adolescents and adults are taboo and immoral. These
relations usually have undesirable consequences for both parties. This paper will focus on the
similarities and differences of two novels, in exploring sexual relations, childhood innocence and the
significances of these relations. In Valdimir Nabokov's Lolita, Dolores Haze, also known as Lolita,

In both these novels, the childhood innocence and experience were targets of the relationships and
eventually lead to the consequences of the character's lives.
The sexual relationships between the characters is one of the main themes that place in both Lolita
and The Go–Between. In The Go–Between, Leo Colston is a sensitive introverted character. As we
know, his crush on Marian was the primary influence on the choice of becoming a go–between.
Marian's main target was Leo's emotional state. Leo was emotionally attached to adults. He does not
fit in anywhere, he is an innocent boy who does not want to viewed as an innocent child. Marian
knowing of Leo's innocence as well as his crush on her, she used this to her advantage, even though
it was wrong. Her being too blinded by love, she did not realize how greatly traumatizing Leo's
future would turn out to be. Later, you can see the effects of Leo being stuck in between a forbidden
love. Causing the emotional and mental state of Leo to deteriorate, as seen here: "Ted's outburst had
almost obliterated Marians: it had finished off the demolition of my temporary emotional structure"
(Hartley 212). Following this, he became paranoid and scared, getting into his head, that Marian
would tell everyone about how childish he is and a shylock.

Hartley begins The Go–Between: with "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently
there." This book is memory like in The Glass Menagerie; it is a look through the dusty memory of a
sixty years old man. Another key theme is class distinction and its warping effects upon the life of
one small boy. He's from a disadvantaged family and is invited in an aristocratic family. The father
and the fiancé are aware of the girl's affair with the farmer, but do nothing about it. They are
confident she will do the "right thing" in the end, and she does. "Why don't you marry Ted," the boy
asks the young woman. "Because I can't," she replies. "Then why are you marrying Trimmington?"
"Because I must." She understands, and she is tough enough to endure. Indeed, at the end of the film
she turns up years later as an old lady very much in the image of her mother. An extra theme is man–
woman relationships and love. Marian and Ted are in love with each other and have an ardent affair
together. Lord Trimmingham probably loved her too because he married her although she was
pregnant and Leo felt in love with her as soon as he saw her. The diary is a symbol of the past and of
the doom that chose him that summer, it's like a pact that he signed, dreams and freshness gone for
adult revelations. In the Zodiac on his diary, Leo is Mercury (virgin), messenger of the Gods,

speaks of his father in a disappointed way by saying that he smelled alcohol on his father's breath
and his ears kept being scraped by his dad's belt while his father carlessly danced with him. In this
poem, the father is potrayed as not one of the greatest father figures that there is. On the other hand,
in the poem "Do not go gentle into that goodnight," the son is speaking of wise men, strong men,
and so forth. He states that when it's their time to face death, they don't go down without a fight. The
language in the poem potrays the son's limitless

The Go-Between
The Go–Between
The story 'The Go–Between' is a short story written by Ali Smith in 2009. The story was written for
a collection of short stories written to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the United Nations' adoption
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The story is inspired by Article 13, which stands for
the right to freedom of movement.
In the story we read about a 33–year–old man who's name is not revealed. The 33–year old man is a
former microbiologist and has worked in a university. In the text we follow this man who gives the
reader a directly insight in how it's like to be an African refugee trying to cross the border between
Morocco and Spain. The narrator of the story has tried several times to cross the border ... Show

I speak these, and also some others." (P.3, ll.31–32) Even with all these qualifications it is not
possible for the narrator to enter Europe. He is simply limited because of his origin and the color of
his skin. The narrator feels that he and the other refugees are invisible and not wanted, it's almost
like he doesn't exist. "A flower will be planted for every single person in Tangier. But not us. Not
me. I'm not here...I'm speaking to you and I'm not really here." (P.5, l.116–118)
The refugees wish so desperately to enter Europe that the narrator describes it as the Spanish
blindness. From the coast of Morocco you are able to see the lights from Spain and the Spanish
border and all the refugees can think of is how much they want to leave Morocco and enter Europe.
The refugees also pay all their money to a Network that promises them a boat, but the Network only
takes advantage of the desperate refugees so the boat never arrives. "All the men in this building
suffer from it, Spanish Blindness. All you can see is Spain. All you can think is Spain tonight, Spain
tonight. They have paid all their money to the Network, and the Network has prom– ised a boat,
maybe tonight. This boat never comes." (P.4, l.73–75) The narrator claims that he does not have this
Spanish blindness anymore, that belongs to the past and he actually says that he wishes he could go
back, but that's not a possibility, he have to move forward. "My

Similarities Between Never Let Me Go And Frankenstein
Introduction Paragraph
From past to present there is still the imminent topic of what it means to be a human. Throughout
the course of works done, there have been many great writers that explored the topic and created
some fabulous works from it. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Frankenstein by Mary
Shelley are two works of literature that really explored and enlighten the readers on the idea of
humanity through other's mind. Both of these works created a controversy and makes the reader
really think about what is morally right to them about humanity. There are several disagreements
and counter dictions that are made when comparing the two works but after reading the novel and
watching the film, there was a strong focus on three main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In Frankenstein, the characters discard the creature because of his unique appearance, unique
meaning horrifying and hideous appearance. Because he looks threatening, they automatically
assume that he is incapable of feelings and emotions. They only think that he's pure evil and wants
to hurt everyone. "I am alone and miserable: man will not associate with me; but one as deformed
and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me. My companion must be of the same species
and have the same defects. This being you must create" (Shelley 121). Although in reality, the
creature just wants someone to be his friend and to have someone that shares the same feeling for
love that he has. The rest of the society don't actually know that the monster is truly nice but because
they never gave him the chance to show it, he lives his life miserably. In Chapter 16, the monster
sees a girl drowning and goes in to save her and when he brings her out of the water the first thing
that happens is he gets shot by her guardian who thought the monster was trying to hurt her. All he
felt was rage and revenge against everyone and Victor who rejected him. "from that moment
declared everlasting war against the species, and more than all, against Victor who had formed him
and sent him forth to this insupportable misery" (Shelly 124). No one let him live like a free man,
instead he lived miserably and alone, because of this nonstop buildup of misery it led to the
destructive behavior. In the film Never Let Me Go, the clones are used and nurtured to grow up as
donations for others. Donating their organs were the only real choice that they had and they were
"brainwashed" to think that there main purpose was to donate their organs. Bu when Tommy and
Kathy finally get the chance to be together and live their life to the fullest and with each other, they

John Greene, the author of "The Fault In Our Stars", once wrote a daring, yet romantic novel referring to the negative connotation of love. The two individuals throughout the story fought a tough battle, but was it for sickness or the sake of love? In this situation, "The Fault In Our Stars" and "This Star Won't Go Out" share many similar qualities. The novels contribute common interest of symbolism throughout. For example, each novel dealt with friendship and emotion. Both adolescents were quite conservative as they felt that they troubled the lives of others surrounding them. If they are bullied, left alone or fit in? Did you ever consider putting them in a different school? Education is very important. Some of the reasons education is important are quite simple. Education is to better a person 's self knowledge needed later in life. We start education at such a young age because children have a different level of common knowledge. However, there has always been a struggle between single–sex schools and public schools. Public schools started in 1821. The first public school started in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of the 19th century. Before that, single–sex schools were very common. From then on, there has been fights between different people arguing whether children should go to public schools or single–sex schools. Children should go to public schools. They should only go to public schools because they need interaction with different peers, learn how to deal with real world problems and learn the differences between boys and girls. One of the main reasons children should go to public schools is because they need to interact with different peers. During school, girls and boys were thought to be equal (Single, A). However, that was not always the case. Boys were cared for more than girls were, until Title IX stepped in. Title IX is the revision of a landmark 1970s law to make sure equal access to education for girls was given (Single, A) . After that law was passed in 1972, there were limiting single–sex schools and both genders were looked after equally (Single, A). "The people on the feminist– leaning side of the debate see the conversation about a boys' crisis as a strategy to advance the single–sex education agenda. I'm not sure that is correct. Overview This book is a memory story: a man in his sixties looks back on his boyhood of the middle class boy recalling the events that took place on a summer visit to an aristocratic family in Norfolk in the 1900's. The author uses double narrative, the young Leo's actions told by the older Leo, and it shows us how it has affected his life Firsttly, I'll introduce the main characters, their functions and relationships, then I'll give you a small summary of the story, followed by the main themes and their symbolic elements, and finally the style of the book. Leo Colston has two different aspects, he's the narrator of the book, a man of about sixty year old, and he's a "dried up" man inside. Leo is a young boy of ... Leo is disappointed about life, fidelity and love. Remembering that summer, he wants to know what happened to Marian and goes back to Brandham Castle. There, he's charged of his last message: telling to Marian's grandson how beautiful and true her love with Ted was. The narrator has never married; perhaps does he still love her? There are a lot of important themes in this book, the most evident is the discovery of sexuality and of the grown ups world of a teenage boy, the loss of his innocence. He is scarred sexually and emotionally by his summer experience. At the end of the book, he has turned into an emotionally hollow adult. Another main theme is past and memory, L. P. Hartley begins The Go–Between: with "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there." This book is memory like in The Glass Menagerie; it is a look through the dusty memory of a sixty years old man. Another key theme is class distinction and its warping effects upon the life of one small boy. He's from a disadvantaged family and is invited in an aristocratic family. • 13. Similarities Between Of Mice And Men And The Knife Of... How do the authors present sexism and gender inequality in 'of mice and men' and 'the knife of never letting go'? Introduction Throughout both novels the theme of women being perceived as a lesser to men is ceaseless. I think that both these novels show us the flaws in our society from two different periods of time, in 1937 when 'of mice and men' was written, to 2008 when 'The knife of never letting go' was written. But how coincident they are, and how the problem of gender inequality and sexism has always been a flaw in the world, and still is today in the 21st century. Of mice and men by John Steinbeck is a touching novel that reaches deep into our hearts. It is a tale of two migrant farm workers by the names of Lenny and George struggling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he is escaping through the swamp, he hears 'nothing', for the first ever time. He then realises that the silence is coming from a girl, she is the first girl Todd has ever seen. Both novels show the hierarchy of men and women and how gender inequality and sexism is something that is so recent, but has also been a really big problem and debate for a very long time, and that maybe we haven't addressed the problem completely. They both show us difficult relationships, with all the blame usually being put on the woman even if she had done nothing wrong. Section 1– instantaneously judging The authors are both male, and therefore may find it easier to relate to the male characters, however coming from two different time perspectives their representation and vision of women is surprisingly similar. The main similarity being the theme of women being instantaneously 'judged' by the male characters, without even getting to know them. A quote from 'of mice and men' to support this is: "don't you dare take a look at that bitch, i dont care what she says and what she does. I seen 'em poison before, but i never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her" (page 54). In this quote george is warning lennie of Curley's wife. We see sexism here because not only is george calling her a 'bitch', a derogatory term to call a female, he is also assuming that because she comes across as a flirt she is a woman who will get men into ... • 15. The Go Between By Ali Smith Summary ''The Go–Between'' is a short story, written by Ali Smith in 2009. This short story is based on the United Nations' adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Ali Smith finds inspiration in an article about the right to freedom of movement, which also is the theme and case in this short story. Many people try to travel from Africa to the south of Europe, due to poverty, war or hunger. This short story deals with the fact that everyone has their human rights, and they have the freedom of movement. They are free to travel anywhere they want. The narrator in this short story is a first person limited narrator, because he only knows about his own feelings and thoughts, but at the same time he describes his surroundings. The narrator ... He fact that the African man lost half his ear and one finger on his way to Spain, indicates that Spain does everything to keep refugees from Africa out of their country. The style of writing is with short sentences, which makes the short story seem boring, but at the same time the narrator is humoristic and jokes about who he is e.g. ''The Cameroon swimmer. Philosophical Professor Me. Border Crosser Extraordinaire''. These short sentences give the reader a view into most African people's life. Their life is often boring because they do not have much to spend their time on, due to high unemployment and poverty. They do not have the same facilities like the most of us have in Europe. The humoristic part of the narrator's language combined with the short sentences and this following quote, creates an image of what a life like an African refugee is. ''I'm a small, slight man. I'm not a big man. I'm lean and slight. My stature is slight. My coat is a bit too slight – here comes the winter! I'm thirty–three years old. I'm a mature old man, me! I'm not noticeable. I'm quiet. • 19. Similarities Between Go Set A Watchman And To Kill A... In July of 1960, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was published bringing immediate success as a classic of modern American literature. Fifty–five years later, Go Set a Watchman was released though it was written in 1957. Both novels include the same characters, however Go Set a Watchman took place in a setting two decades after To Kill a Mockingbird. In Go Set a Watchman, Jean Louise returns home twenty years later to find her noble role model and "beloved father" is now affiliated with "raving anti–integration and anti–black crazies" (Kakutani). While Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird reflected aspects of Harper Lee's life, his character in Go Set a Watchman represents a more realistic view of racism which demonstrates accuracy to historical context in the 1930's. The Ku Klux Klan was established in 1866 and within four years it had extended to the majority of the southern states ("Ku Klux Klan"). In Alabama, the Ku Klux Klan alleged to have over 150,000 members in the 1920's ("Ku Klux Klan in Alabama from 1915–1930"). The Ku Klux Klan is not mentioned in To Kill a Mockingbird though it had been known in every southern state. During Lee's childhood, it would be impossible for her not to hear of the group. To Kill a Mockingbird leaves this crucial group out while in Go Set a Watchman the Ku Klux Klan is a defining element of the character of Atticus. Great Expectations and The Go Between Great Expectations and The Go Between Both Great Expectations and The Go Between concern young men from lowly backgrounds who find themselves thrust into the world of the leisured classes and are changed forever. What similarities and differences do you see between the ways in which the two authors handle and develop this shared situation? The role of these two friends is different in that Herbert grows up with Pip and they are much closer than Leo and Marcus. For example, Enough I saw my own feelings in Herbert's face, and, not least among them my, repugnance towards the man who had done so much for me.' This demonstrates how Herbert has helped Pip and that he feels very close to him as he sees his own feelings in his face. Throughout the Summer Leo is used as a playmate and someone to entertain Marcus so that he is kept from bothering the adults, so in this way he is used. The relationship between Herbert and Pip is more intimate, as they live together and help each other out. We also learn about them together as young men not just as boys. The similarity between the two friends of Pip and Leo is that they teach both boys a great deal about how the upper class live. In Great Expectations Herbert teaches Pip that you can be a kind gentleman and don't have to be very rich. In contrast to this Marcus teaches Leo to throw his clothes on the floor for the servants to pick up and to be a superficial gentleman. The men that give the boys examples of how to be a gentleman are Drummle and Hugh. In Great Expectations Dickens tries to show that there are two types of gentleman. In one of Robert Browning's most unsettling dramatic monologues, "Porphyria's Lover," Browning tells a story of a man killing his lover in order to preserve her love for him. To start with, when the speaker is describing the weather outside "It tore the elm–tops down for spite," suggests how powerful the storm is. The whole poem the speaker is fighting for power against Porphyria. At first he lets her keep all the power, but when she is not expecting it, he kills her to gain full power over her. The speaker reduces Porphyria to an object, a corpse that he could manipulate. Though in "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" the main themes are mortality and transience. Thomas knows that death is inevitable but he wants his father and all the elderly that are, close to death to fight it off for as long as possible. Thomas conveys the theme of transience by comparing how good men's lives are flying by. This is done during the first ten days, starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur. These are commonly known as the Days of Awe or the Days of Repentance. All religious undertone aside, I like the idea of reviewing and revisiting life to let go of what no longer serves us–no matter what time of the year. The ego–mind likes familiarity and creating a sense of repetition to feel safe and in control. This is crucial when we are children and need to feel safe, but its value should decrease as we grow up and understand that being in control is really an illusion, especially if we want to continue growing– emotionally, mentally, and spiritually–to master our life. We took the roles of poor chefs who earned their livings selling baked goods, uprooting peculiar weeds and picking brightly coloured flowers to decorate these 'cakes'. For instance, as I mentioned in the beginning of this analysis, the man describes himself as a "small, slight man", which is followed up by him stating "The Cameroon Swimmer. He is living a life between two completely different worlds; Europe and Africa. Physically he does not belong anywhere anymore, he is stuck between two continents. This is emphasized by the title of the short story, "The Go–Between", because no matter what the protagonist does, he can only go to a place in between. With that said, I believe that Ali Smith's intention with the story is to shine a light on the ironic fact that we are celebrating an occasion that is still so far away from deserving celebration. Her short story is an ironic observation of the lacks in executing these rights, even 60 years after they were implemented. Due to this I recommend that more emphasis be placed on history in schools and more reforms be made in the curriculum . • 53. Summary Of Go-Betweens And The Colonization Of Brazil In history, what often occurred was that influential individuals who occupied the middle ground during exploration were forgotten. These third–party individuals are called go–betweens and they helped Europeans connect with different cultural groups. The 16th century brought enormous change by the Portuguese to the indigenous groups who lived in Brazil. The colonization of Brazil owes its success to transactional, representational, and physical/biological go–betweens. The book, Go–betweens and the Colonization of Brazil, written by Alida Metcalf explores the roles of these go–betweens and their impact. When the Portuguese first landed in Brazil it was by accident, they were aiming for India. The admiral Pedro Alvares Cabral anchored his ships off the coast and he remained in Brazil for only ten days. Cabral understood that they needed to proceed with caution because everything they did was based on what occurred when the Portuguese first went to Africa. Cabral understood the dangers of not having go–betweens in a new land. Even though Cabral had many translators on his ships, they did not have anyone that were from Brazil. The translators were Africans or Afro–Portuguese. This leads into the first type of go–betweens mentioned in the book and it is transactional. The most easily recognized of the go–betweens are the transactional. These go–betweens were translators, negotiators, and cultural brokers. They had the power to shift their loyalties and create complex relationships. Cabral had brought two dozen criminal exiles on his journey and because they did not have any translators he left two criminals at their first stop. When the criminals were left, their job was to learn the Indian customs, language, and culture. This showed the long–term interest that they had in Brazil. This laid the foundation for the creation of translators for future use. When criminals were left their job was to learn the Indian customs, which shows the long–term interest they had. Many of the first transactional go–betweens are unknown to historians because of being semiliterate and not writing about their experiences. By the middle of the 16th century, one group of go– betweens that appeared were the Norman interpreters. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Published in 1953 although set at the beginning of the 20th century, The Go–Between demonstrates how a young boys deceived and clouded perception of life leads to a disillusioned old man, who can't recover from the distressing events of the first summer of 1900. In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night disappointment is exhibited through many characters whom experience the torments of a love that is not reciprocated. Furthermore, Thomas Hardy explores similar themes in his poetry via the use of specific literary techniques, such as metaphors, and pathetic fallacy to demonstrate how the disillusionment of the speakers past has led to a disappointed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speakers misconceptions of another woman's feelings towards himself first emerge when he believes that "her gloom within at the lack of [him] seemed matching [his] at the lack of her", the repetition of "lack" in both lines shows that the speaker wants to relate to the woman, as well as wanting the woman to relate to him. Hardy's use of the expression "seemed" is a foregrounding technique to imply to the reader that nothing is as it seems due to the speaker's disillusionment regarding the unreciprocated feelings between himself and the woman. Disappointment surfaces when the speaker notices that there "was glee within." rather than "gloom"; the utilisation of the caesura represents the speakers moment of realisation thus the moment that his illusions of the woman transform into sheer disappointment at the fact that he is now going to be "alone". The cause of the speaker's disappointment is similar to Leo's in The Go–Between as he foolishly believes Marian has feelings for him, until he experiences his moment of realisation upon reading "darling, darling, darling" demonstrating that the cause of their ... Organizational culture refers to the beliefs and values that exist in an organization and to the beliefs of the staff and the foreseen value of their work that will influence their work ethic. Schein (1992, 2004) defines the culture of a group or organization as shared assumptions and beliefs about the world and their place in it, the nature of time and space, human nature, and human relationships. (pg. 326) On the other hand, leadership provides the vision and helps the organization move in the direction to accomplish the best or the organization and the employees. It is important to understand the relationship between organizational culture and leadership and how they influence each other. Yukl states that "by changing the culture of an organization, top management can indirectly influence the motivation and behavior of organization members. Research on organizational culture provides further insight into the dynamics of transformational leadership and the processes by which a leader's charisma may become institutionalized." (pg. 326) In the article, it talks about four ways to influence organizational culture Programs, Systems, Structures, and Cultural Forms. • 67. Ways Hartley and Frayn present Childhood in The... In the Go–Between, Hartley presents the world of children and childhood through the first person narrative (from the viewpoints of the young and old Leo), Leo's vivid imagination, the themes of growing up and self–awareness, the conflict between the child and adult world, and the portrayal of Leo as a school boy. Firstly, the writer portrays the world of children through the first person narrative which encapsulates young Leo's fresh, spontaneous optimism and hope towards the dawning of a new era, 'My dreams for the twentieth century, and for myself, were coming true'(Chapter 1. p. 28). Therefore, this device allows the reader direct access to the intensity yet simplicity of a child's point of view and enhances Leo's personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... p. 82). Therefore, the adult narrator's ability to comment and reflect on his child–self effectively emphasizes the naïve and vulnerable nature of youth, and contributes to the mood of foreboding and suspense throughout the novel, 'now I was over confident. I expected things to go my way' (Chapter 1. p. 28). In addition, the two voices in the narrative illustrate the contrasting perceptions of childhood and maturity as we can see that the younger Leo simply believes if he 'went away...the relationship between Ted and Marian would cease' (Chapter 16. p. 182), whereas the elder Leo is able to analyse his feelings, 'I thought I knew what was best for myself...I was shaken and frightened' (Chapter 16. p. 183). Consequently, the first person narrative in the past tense effectively conveys a sense of the adult narrator carefully exploring his conscious in a philosophical manner, whereas child narrator's naïve attitude is portrayed in his black and white perception of the crisis, believing that he is solely to blame for the blossoming of the lovers' affair, 'I had attacked them first' (Chapter 16. p. 182). Thus, the reader feels a certain degree of sympathy towards Leo's predicament as he possesses a common child–like sense of misguided responsibility. However, it is evident that he is merely facilitating the relationship between Ted and Marian. Nevertheless, the writer also presents Leo as somewhat egocentric as he sees ... Childhood innocence is tested by child life experiences. Innocence can be depicted as the quality of ignorance. These relations usually have undesirable consequences for both parties. In both these novels, the childhood innocence and experience were targets of the relationships and eventually lead to the consequences of the character's lives. The sexual relationships between the characters is one of the main themes that place in both Lolita and The Go–Between. In The Go–Between, Leo Colston is a sensitive introverted character. As we know, his crush on Marian was the primary influence on the choice of becoming a go–between. Marian's main target was Leo's emotional state. Leo was emotionally attached to adults. He does not fit in anywhere, he is an innocent boy who does not want to viewed as an innocent child. Marian knowing of Leo's innocence as well as his crush on her, she used this to her advantage, even though it was wrong. Her being too blinded by love, she did not realize how greatly traumatizing Leo's future would turn out to be. Later, you can see the effects of Leo being stuck in between a forbidden love. Causing the emotional and mental state of Leo to deteriorate, as seen here: "Ted's outburst had almost obliterated Marians: it had finished off the demolition of my temporary emotional structure" (Hartley 212). Following this, he became paranoid and scared, getting into his head, that Marian would tell everyone about how childish he is and a shylock. • 71. Book Report on the Go Between The Go–between By L.P. Hartley Leslie Poles Hartley was born in 1895; he studied in Oxford and was officer in France during World War 1. He was novelist, short–story writer and critic. His reputation as a writer was established with the publication of the trilogy of novels, The Shrimp and the Anemone (1944), The Sixth Heaven (1946), and Eustace and Hilda (1947). He died in 1972. The Go–between was first published in 1953, the following year it received the Heinemann Foundation Prize of the Royal Society of Literature. The father and the fiancé are aware of the girl's affair with the farmer, but do nothing about it. They are confident she will do the "right thing" in the end, and she does. "Why don't you marry Ted," the boy asks the young woman. "Because I can't," she replies. "Then why are you marrying Trimmington?" "Because I must." She understands, and she is tough enough to endure. Indeed, at the end of the film she turns up years later as an old lady very much in the image of her mother. An extra theme is man– woman relationships and love. Marian and Ted are in love with each other and have an ardent affair together. Lord Trimmingham probably loved her too because he married her although she was pregnant and Leo felt in love with her as soon as he saw her. The diary is a symbol of the past and of the doom that chose him that summer, it's like a pact that he signed, dreams and freshness gone for adult revelations. In the Zodiac on his diary, Leo is Mercury (virgin), messenger of the Gods, mercury also gauging the ever–rising heat of the summer, and of those passions of the adults circling ...
