Abstract:
Space exploration is the future of humanity. As technology improves, new solutions arise to answer
the question of sustaining life outside Earth. Many types of life support systems are developed and
used on regular missions. However, determining the most suitable life support system for missions
on Mars presents a challenge that this paper will solve. This article compares different life support
systems using the Equivalent System Mass (ESM), which measures the relative cost of hardware
based on its mass, volume, power, and cooling requirements. Bioregenerative systems are more
practicable and secure for longer missions as they avoid the cost of constant food supply. However,
the ESM shows that the higher initial cost of bioregenerative systems makes it way more expensive
than the Physical/Chemical systems for long–duration missions. For short duration missions, the
least expensive life support uses direct provision of water, oxygen and food from Earth. As Mars
missions aren't brief, the physical/chemical life support system is the most suitable. The ESM
breakeven analysis confirms these well–known and widely accepted results. The conclusion makes
the substantial past efforts to develop bioregenerative life support appear impractical.

1.1 Over–inclusive vendor designed clinical decision support systems
Clinical decision support (CDS) systems are an important tool physicians have at their disposal for
the improvement of patient health care, and safety. However, current CDS being used have often
been designed to be over–inclusive in the alerts they generate, with present generation systems
including alert parameters for thousands of drug interaction types for example [3]. These vendor
CDS products include such information as drug–drug and drug–disease interactions, minimum and
maximum dosing suggestions, drug–allergy cross–sensitivity groupings, and groupings of
medications by therapeutic class [2]. The products are so inclusive in fact, that physician alert
fatigue can undermine the utility of the entire system. As a recent review of empirical studies on
computerized physician order entry (CPOE) combined with CDS concluded that physicians override
these automated alerts a significant amount of time. According to one study, these physicians were
overriding these alerts in as many as 19 out 20 instances [3].
CDS vendors can provide end–user configuration tools that allow particular decision support
features to be modified, or turned on and off. Still, many end–user organizations have reported that,
when used as the primary source for CDS in clinical systems, commercial knowledge bases produce

EHR. Quite frankly, I found both articles extremely interesting and educational. In the first article,
