The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Museum
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Before the mid–twentieth century, museums in Europe and the United States were generally planned
in variations of the neoclassical style. But, the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao moved the heading
of gallery outlines, which gave an extensive show venue to twentieth century and modern art,
designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry. Architecture is important nowadays to the public,
because it offers a physical surrounding environment in where we live in. Moreover, architecture is
not only affected by the culture, but also by the economy of the country.
Frank Gehry is one of the handful modern architects that are worldwide known by his inventive and
pioneering work. The American Canadian architect was born Frank Owen Goldberg in Toronto,
Canada on February 28, 1929, based in Los Angeles since 1962. He studied architecture at the
University of Southern California and city planning in Harvard University. Gehry is known for his
postmodern structures and unusual inventions. His most popular buildings include the Guggenheim
Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum that represents modern and contemporary art. Its
story first begins when Thomas Krens the director of Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation in New
York City, was looking for a museum location in Europe. He chose the industrial wasteland in the
middle of the city on a curve of the Nervion River. The site was located in the center of

The Two Franks and Their Architecture Essay
Different architects have different styles because they are trying to get at different things.
Architecture is not just about making something beautiful anymore, it is about trying to get across a
set of ideas about how we inhabit space. Two of the most famous architects of the twentieth century,
one from each side, the early part and the later part up until today each designed a museum with
money donated by the Guggenheim foundation. One of these is in New York City, it was designed
by Frank Lloyd Wright. The other is in bilbao, Spain, and it was designed by Frank Geary. My
purpose of this paper is to interrogate each of these buildings, glorious for different reasons, to show
how each architect was expressing their own style. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a very functional approach. I am only going to talk about the outside of Frank Geary's
museum because I have never been there, and I have only seen pictures on the internet. This
building is surprisingly attractive because the other building that we saw in class of his, his house in
Santa Monica, had a great deal of "ugliness," to use an official term. His house in Santa Monica was
supposed to look unfinished, with an emphasis on the materials used in construction. This building,
however, looks as if it has been wrapped in silver. It looks very futuristic, and angular, so it could be
functional as a museum as a museum because people will know it holds modern art. I like the way
that it catches reflections, almost mirroring the surrounding buildings. So, in these two examples we
see very different approaches to architecture. One has an impressive inside and the other one has an
appealing outside. Also, both seem to be departures for the architects from their normal modes––
Wright's building doesn't blend in with nature, and Geary's doesn't look deconstructed into small
parts. Now if only they could has worked together on one project, then we would have a museum
that would be perfect inside and out. The Falling Water House that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright
is an embodiment of organic architecture. It has a stone face that was the same tonal feeling of the
rock that surrounds the building. There is a feeling that is inspired in the

The French Theorist Guy Debord
In 1967, the french theorist Guy Debord, outlined his concept for a future spectacle society, whereby
..... "Quote about capital". Presented as a treatise on the modern humman condition; Society of the
Spectacle is a piece that explores the contemporary effects of power, which it seems in more recent
times are becoming increasingly tied with the idea of a media and consumer society; a system based
off the production and consumption of images, information and commodities. In the discourse of
arhcitecture specifically, it seems Debords predictions have bled into the culture of modern design,
as expressed by Anthony Vidler: "Recent proposals and debates over the architectutural devlopment
of ground zero have highlighted the way in which, over the last two decades, the public role of
architecture has been gradually reduced to the symbolic and the emblematic. Its forms of expresion
are no longer closely tied back to urban issues and physical planning questions." (Toward a theory
of the architectural program, antohny vidler, page 1) These discussions and critiques, indeed, seem
to bear out Guy Debords 1964 anticipation of an all–pervading spectacle culture where in essense,
we have moved into a system of architecture overinvested in symbolic form, "where flash and
bravura win out over contemplation". (– nordic from on aestehtics and function in architecture –

How Did Frank Lloyd Wright Build Skyscrapers
Creating Masterpieces Surely everybody has been to the top of a building or a skyscraper in their
life? Almost everybody has been to some kind of monument or statue as well. Do you even think to
yourself how these beautiful, extravagant projects have been built? Many people overlook this
aspect of the design not knowing the confusion and intelligence that goes into these types of
skyscrapers or statues. This is where Frank Lloyd wright comes in: an architect who has helped in so
many "invisible" ways. Frank Lloyd Wright significantly benefitted society by inspiring younger
architects to pursue the career, designing safe and sufficient buildings for society, and also created a
learning aspect of architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright, one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

about the time and effort that someone has put into to present the masterpiece in front of

Essay on Zaha Hadid: Making Utopia a Reality in Architecture
"Utopia: n .an impractical idealistic scheme for social and political reform" – The American
Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition
For over twenty years the Iraqi–born, English educated architect Zaha Hadid has symbolized the
vanguard of contemporary architecture. She has pushed back the boundaries of built form to forge a
highly individualist architectonic language that is at once thrillingly dynamic and intensely
thoughtful, and as a result now has an enormous following of students, practitioners and builders.
Most people recognize her hand through the striking drawings and paintings that represent her work,
but the beauty of her illustrations tend to obscure the fact that she is an architect who builds, due to

In her designs she tries to break away from the vitruvian prepositions that govern the normal,
conventional architecture that is being used today.
Fortunately for her she has been able to showcase some of these ideas as can be seen in her first
built project which is the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The project began as a
commission to build a fire station in the northeast section of the vast Vitra furniture factory complex
as well as design boundary walls, a bicycle shed and other small elements. In this relatively small
structure she used unusual shapes and angles that architectural critics had admired in her conceptual
work throughout the 1980s. Since the site already contained large–scale factory buildings, she
decided to concentrate on the site as a zone within the industrial landscape so as to place the
elements of the building in such a way that they would not get lost between the enormous factory
sheds. As can be expected the inside of the building is as interesting as the exterior with multiple
optical tricks being played on the viewer. The design's primary feature is a series of layered
screening walls, between which spaces are created according to the station's functions. Her interplay
of angles and colors makes the interior as visually interesting as the exterior without making it look
too busy. One of the most noticeable features of this building is how glimpses of the large red fire
engines can be

Deer In The Forest 1 Analysis
The Philips Collection located at 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009 is a block north of
DuPont Circle, and houses a collection of Modern painting from a multitude of modern art
movements including German Expressionism to Abstract Expression. These paintings adorn the
walls of the first three floors, and the basement contains the library. The Phillips collection not only
houses paintings, but also has an array of modern sculptures, and photographs too. The dialogue
created between the viewers and the artwork exhibits was immense and thought provoking.
However, two paintings considerably stood out. Reclining Figure, an oil painting produced by Pablo

Muted colors are toned down by reducing the saturation of color. The use of muted colors is an
archetypal characteristic of the Cubism art movement, as a way to focus on the subject matter (The
deer), creates shallow space, and not distract the viewer. The color pallet consists of the muted
primary colors of blue, red, and yellow. Franz Marc always associated color to certain meanings,
and his approach to color theory is stated in a letter written to fellow artist August Macke which says
"Blue is the male principle, astringent and spiritual. Yellow is the female principle, gentle, gay and
spiritual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy and always the color to be opposed and overcome by the
other two" (Marc). However, in the composition of the painting, the colors in the background go
from blue, then red is directly located behind the group of deer, then a tinge of yellow. The color
blue ensconces and surrounds the red, except for the upper portion of the left hand side, which is
offset by a dash of yellow. Mixed from the color blue on the right side, and the yellow on the left,
the secondary color of green swallows up the rest of the upper half of the background. Secondary
colors like orange and green, are used on the lower portion of the composition, in which the deer are
colored orange, and the foliage is green. The use of light shatters from the bottom right

The Broad Collection Essay
The Broad Collection is a contemporary art museum being built in downtown Los Angeles. When
completed, it will showcase Eli and Edythe Broad's art collection, consisting of nearly 2,000
prominent works of art. The building's façade was designed to look honeycomb–like and include a
glass curtain wall. Seele Inc., a Germany–based engineering company, was hired as a subcontractor
to begin work on the facade in 2012, after spending three months consulting with the New York City
architecture firm of Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, who created the original renderings. The Broad
Collection is now suing Seele, alleging that the engineering firm put the project at least 15 months
behind schedule. Additional claims against the engineering firm include breach of contract, specific
performance, and fraud in the inducement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Seele also agreed that its work would be "of extraordinary quality, consistent with 'world–renowned
German engineering.'" Yet when it came time for Seele to present its mock–ups, they showed the
firm "ignored the design intent ... [and] violated the important 'aesthetic aspect' of the architect's
design." Seele suggested using precast concrete, instead of the lighter, agreed–to fiber–reinforced
concrete. Use of Seele's suggested heavier material was impossible considering Los Angeles' special
building safety requirements, so the designers went back to the lighter

Little Frank And His Carp Rhetorical Analysis
Little Frank and his Carp: A Gallery Talk 1989 is a video in where artist Andrea Fraser tours through
the atrium of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao as a visitor listening to an audio guide. The opening
shot show us waiting in line to receive the audio guide device when ,Dressed in a green dress,
Fraser, walks into the lobby, speaks to the museum staff and receives her audio device, and begins
her guide through the museum. Using conventional elements of a gallery tour, the narrator of the
audio tour offers his thoughts on the building's aesthetics with intimate description. Fraser employs
comical parody to stereotypical mannerisms one comes to expect from a visitor of a museum in her
performance, applying in–depth and embellished praise to the items she comes across. Often there is
a weird disconnection between Fraser reaction and the atrium description. Throughout the tour,
Fraser's reaction repeatedly brings up questions of appropriateness, self–worth, and impulses that

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which is why the use of a hidden was necessary, the use of copyright

Explain The Differences Between The Hayward Gallery
Explain the differences between the Hayward gallery (1968) and its South Bank neighbour, the
Royal Festival Hall (1951) in terms of their planning and finishing and in the different ways they
relate to their urban context. While there are many similarities between the Hayward Gallery and
Royal Festival Hall, there also are a number of differences in terms of planning and finishing in
relation to urban context. Higgs and Hill built the Hayward Gallery, which opened on The 9th of
July. It is an art gallery located in the Southbank Centre, which is a key arts venue in Central
London. Until early 2011 the gallery was simply known as the Hayward. The Royal Festival Hall is
situated adjacent to the Hayward Gallery. It is a famous dance, concert and talks venue with a
capacity of 2500. It was the first the post–war building to listed as a Grade 1 building. The Hall
officially opened on 3rd May 1951 and was built as part of the Festival of Britain for the London
County Council. Planning plays an integral role in the procedure to achieve any given outcome.

The Similarities Of Frank Wright And Frank OGehry
More and more people create our hotels, schools, homes, theme parks, and several other structures.
Those people are called architects, they are people who design buildings and construct them in some
cases. People may also define them as scientists and artists. Frank Wright and Frank O'Gehry are
similar, however, they have their own unique style and design when it comes to buildings. Frank
Wright (1867–1959), is an American architect born on June 8th in Richland Center, Wisconsin
(Biography.com n.d.). A modern design, he produced an organic and clear American style
(Architectural Digest n.d.). Wright founded his own firm and developed the Prairie School– single–
story homes with low, slanted roofs and extended rows on the windowpane, using the available
materials from local business and clean and not painted wood (The Editors of Encyclopedia
Britannica 2017). The Robie House (Figure 1) located in Chicago and Unity Temple placed in Oak
Park (Biography.com n.d.). Wright was known mainly in Europe but not in the United States. In
1913, Wright designed his home on his maternal ancestors land in Spring Green, Wisconsin
(Architectural Digest n.d.). This home was named Taliesin, sadly it got burnt down twice and he still
remodeled it again (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). Wright wrote two books in 1932:
"An Autobiography" and "The Disappearing City," both are known as architectural literature
(Biography.com n.d.). In addition, to publishing the two books, he

Helen Clay Frick Research Paper
For nearly 80 years, visitors to a New York art museum called the Frick Collection have stood
behind a velvet rope at the bottom of a sweeping marble staircase and longed to see the private
rooms upstairs.
By 2020, they will be able to satisfy their curiosity. That's because Henry Clay Frick's three–story
mansion in New York City, which opened as a museum in 1935, is going to turn private living
quarters into exhibition space and expand with a 42,000–square–foot addition.
Two of the Frick family's second–floor bedrooms plus a sitting room and breakfast room will
become galleries. Construction, slated to begin in 2017, also will connect the three–story museum
with the nearby Frick Art Reference Library, which also opened in 1935. Helen Clay Frick, daughter

That's one reason the adjoining bedrooms of Helen Clay Frick and her mother, Adelaide, which are
currently used as offices, will become exhibition galleries. About 320,000 people visit the Frick

Most of the collection is on view, but small sculptures, decorative arts objects, and drawings that are
in storage will be well–suited to exhibition in the family's private rooms.
The Frick Collection, which employs 200 full–time and 40 part–time staff, has an endowment of
$325 million. In 1977, the museum tore down three townhouses it bought in the 1940s to build a

The Themes Of Contemporary Art
In this essay, I would be demonstrating how the topic of contemporary art and the politics of art
institutions reflects and relates to Rajni Perera's 3 figures and VHT. With formal analysis of these
artworks and readings from this topics, I would show the differences and similarities between these
topics. Contemporary art represents what we see as individuals in society today, it does not follow
the set rules of art. For instance, modern art looks and follows modernist theories, likewise,
impressionisms which looks at our perception and understanding of a moment through light and
color in contrasts to that of realism which represents subject matter accurately without any alteration
or addition. On the other hand contemporary art does not have one conclusive or definitive view. Its
view is versatile and flexible which reflects the diversity of the world today, themes of
contemporary are notably about politics, globalization, social issues, migration and technology. In
like manner, the theme I drew from Perera's artworks which is diversity. Perera is Sri Lankan artist,
who grew up and was raised in Scarborough and North York. I find her works diverse notably in the
materials she chose. She uses laundry drying racks which are unconventional materials to create her
VHT sculpture. She does not conform to the regular norms of using clay or plaster. I also found this
as a reoccurring theme of contemporary art and the Migrating the Margins exhibition at the Art

The Unity Temple By Frank Lloyd Wright
1st Artwork– Unity Temple, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, completed in 1908 Frank Lloyd
Wright's career was just beginning to take off in Oak Park, Illinois. One of the most significant
projects from his early career is Unity Temple near his home and studio in Oak Park. Unity Temple
was a replacement church for Unitarian Universalist Church that had burned down in 1905. Unity
Temple was not just an ordinary commission for Wright since he was a parishioner of the Unitarian
Church in Oak Park. When Unity Church burned to the ground in June 1905, Wright was awarded
the commission. He wanted a modern building that would embody the principles of "unity, truth,
beauty, simplicity, freedom and reason." For Wright, the church was meant to be a temple for man to
worship god, which coincided with Wright's decision to abandon the typical New England
Unitarian, white steeple, architectural style for a more modern concrete aesthetic. Also the church 's
budget was relatively low for a project of this scale, approximately $40,000. In harmony with
Wright's philosophy of organic architecture, the concrete was left uncovered by plaster, brick, or
stone. Wright's sensitive handling of materials was a defining feature of his architecture from early
in his career. "Bring out the nature of the materials, Wright insisted, let their nature intimately into
your scheme. Reveal the nature of wood, plaster, brick, or stone in your designs, they are all by
nature friendly and beautiful. No

square meters which now houses the largest sculpture commission in history, Richard Serra's The

technologically advanced 3D design computer program called Catia (5). This program significantly

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Essay
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, is an art museum belonging to the
Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain set on the edge of
the Nervión River. It first opened its doors in October of 1997 and features artwork by
predominantly Spanish artists. It is hailed as a spectacular representation of the Deconstructivity

visitors from around the world being once the city's main source of income.
The following question arises from the assentation: what exactly makes the Guggenheim Bilbao an
architectural masterpiece?
Between art and architecture, there is a lifelong bond. They are rather like light and shadow; one
cannot exist without the other. Even the word "masterpiece", used here to describe something
architectural, holds a strong connotation with fine arts.
In the case of Gehry's Guggenheim museum Bilbao, the building is a three–dimensional abstract
representation of something real in nature. It is mostly made up of organic curves and reflective
materials that reflect light and the free forms of nature. Whether it is viewed from the river, the
bridge, or the sky, the museum strongly resembles a lotus flower. It will obviously never be an

Klein's work." Klein is very confident and fearless even when the work its not complex and leans

It's notoriety came with a show based around his new color in question, "International Klein Blue".
What makes his new color interesting is that he actually created with the help of a chemist.
Monochrome Blue has no trace of line or imagery, it simply surrounds the viewer in color,

Frank Lloyd Wright's Ultimate Boon Analysis
The most rewarding part of a Hero's quest is the Ultimate Boon that the hero leaves behind. This is
what the hero's quest is all about it's what the hero is after when he or she embarks on their quest.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Ultimate Boon is the building he left behind. Noticeably "FallingWater"
dubbed "The most famous house in the world today" by House and Home magazine in 1958 (Stungo

It is here that Wright was able to incorporate nature into his building like he always wanted to. This
is the first home he built using this style. Wright's creation of the Martin House in Buffalo, New

Frank Gehry
Quote
"When everybody else is ready for the ending, I'm just ready to begin," Frank Gehry once wrote.
"It's been the story of my life" (qtd. in Templer, 1999, pp.1) Laying the Foundation
Born on 28 February 1929 in Toronto, Canada, Frank O. Goldberg entered a household with a strong
Polish and Jewish heritage. Twenty years earlier, Thelma Caplanski left Poland with her parents, a
couple with deep religious morals. Once they settled in Toronto, the two decided to change their last
name to Caplan. The owner of a hardware store, her father was also the president of a synagogue.

The Goldberg family relocated to Timmins, Ontario during Frank's adolescent years. Unfortunately,
during these times, Frank saw how mean kids can be as he was given the nickname "Fish". People
did not accept his religion, Judaism, and the nickname was supposed to put him down but Frank
would later use that as a basis for his some of his creations. During this time, he explored atheism
because of these difficulties (Hines, 1986).
Finding and Designing Love
After Frank's father grew sick, the Goldberg family moved to Los Angeles where some of the family
already resided. Ironically, they lived in an apartment that was close to where the Loyola Law
School would be built in later years, according to Frank's blueprints. At this time, the family was
struggling for money and Frank had to find a job. He worked as a delivery truck man who installed
breakfast nooks. It was through this job that Frank would meet Anita Snyder, a woman who he
married later in 1952. Two years later, with the permission of his family, Frank decided to change
their last name to Gehry. The couple had two daughters and the three followed Gehry to an army
base in Georgia (Hines, 1986) and then to Paris (Hines, 1986; Templer, 1999). Eventually, got

Structured with a grid–like order that embraces an extruding eccentric metal clad form, the
Melbourne Museum highlighted an irregular sculptural composition. The architecture is a result of
poetic forms, featuring an impressive sculptural blade roof that cantilevered across the west,
projecting and sharing a central axis with the neighbouring Royal Exhibition Building. The
suprematist expression of the Melbourne Museum is inspired by Kazimir Malevich, a Russian
painter and a pioneer of geometric abstract art. According to Beck, this is the style that echoed the
spirits of constructivism and was proposed as an architectural scheme for the Melbourne Museum.
Beck explained that this will result in the generation of a dialogue of equals whilst

Metropolitan Museum Research Paper
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's largest and finest art museums. The main
Neoclassical architectural style building is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in New York
City, New York. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. It was founded in 1870
with a mission to collect, preserve, and display works of art. In 1866 a group of Americans gathered
at a restaurant to celebrate the Fourth of July. After dinner, John Jay, a prominent lawyer gave a
speech proposing that he and his compatriots decided to create a "national institution and gallery of
art." In the next four years, they convinced American civic leaders, art collectors, and
philanthropists to support the project, and finally in 1870 the Metropolitan Museum of Art was
incorporated. During the 1870s the museum was housed in two different locations in New York City,
first in a building at 681 Fifth Avenue and later at 128 West 14th Street. In 1880 the museum moved
to its present location in Central Park on Fifth Avenue between 80th and 84th Streets. The museum
moved to this land to make a permanent home for the collections. This original Gothic Revival–style

A Comparison Of Frank Lloyd Wright And Frank OGehry
Two architects who works needs to be recognized too are Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank O'Gehry.
Both great architects with creative designs that seem to incorporate with their surroundings. Who
contributed so much to our modern designs and buildings that we still visit today. Both architects
who came up with new ideas and designs instead of the traditional like houses and buildings but
added new concept to what we see today. Frank Lloyd Wright was born in the year 1867, in
Richland Center, Wisconsin. Both an architect and writer, he is considered a genius of the American
architecture (Kaufmann 1). Wright went to the University of Wisconsin at Madison for a few terms
where he took engineering courses (Kaufmann 3). He finally left Madison after a few years and
found work with J.L. Silsbee, in architectural detailing. After a few years he opened his own
architectural practice. One of his styles that became the residential design of the 20th century in the
United States was the Prairie Style. The Prairie architecture was known for its revolutionary
approach to the building of modern homes. Wright built about 50 prairie houses in ten years. Two of
his major works that stand out is the Guggenheim Museum located in New York and the Marin
County government Centre located near San Francisco. The Guggenheim Museum is a form of
abstract art which has no separate floor levels but uses a spiral ramp. This was his ideal of
continuous space and most significant building. His principles

Essay about Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was a Nature lover and an architect. He reflected on the natural world and
applied existing styles to his architecture. He was born in Wisconsin, on June 8, 1867, and died in
Phoenix, Arizona, on April 9, 1959, at the age of 91. His architectural career spanned two centuries
and lasted for 70 years. During the last year of his life he authored a book and was working on 166
different commissions; when asked about when he would slow down, he replied when the ideas stop
coming to him.

Many of those buildings were being developed in his mind while he was growing up and spending
summers on his uncle's farm. It was during this time that he developed his love for Nature, to be a
part of it. His love for Nature is dominant in his earlier works dubbed the "Prairie Houses", but can
also been seen in his later works such as Johnson Wax and the Guggenheim Museum. When Frank
Lloyd Wright was just sixty–eight years old, he was commissioned to design a house for Edgar
Kaufmann. Wright and Kaufmann went to the property to survey the location for the house.
Kaufmann liked to spend time at the water falls on his land so that is where Wright decided to build
it. Wright figured if Nature could place the boulders over a waterfall, than he could build a house
over one. It took Wright only three hours to draw the plans for the house. The house consists
basically of concrete slabs balanced on the boulders above the stream, and the walls are slabs of the
natural rock surrounding the house. The house includes a pool that is built under the house and is fed
by the passing stream. Every aspect of the house embraces the Nature that it co–exists with, and the

Analysis : Solomon R. Guggenheim
Solomon R. Guggenheim desired a place to hold his four year old museum of Non–Objective
Paintings. He enlisted Frank Lloyd Wright to artistically create a unique dwelling place for his
preciously prized work. Wright didn't agree with Guggenheim's vision for the desired city location.
Guggenheim won the battle and began to purchase appropriate land plots on Fifth Avenue to ensure
the best natural light source and perfect city backdrop for his art museum. It took 16 years (1943–
1959) for the design and complete construction of the NY Guggenheim Museum. The museum

MUSEUM The Guggenheim Museum was purposefully planned and sympathetically carried out. It
was a new construction which was designed to house Non– Objective artwork from Solomon R.
Guggenheim himself. When approaching the building you're immediately drawn to its wide, oval
shaped base which is the foundation for the vertical, spiraling, eight–story tower. The museum was
designed to have an inverted ziggurat effect and due to this, if your eye is keen enough you'll see the
grid pattern the entire space forms. You're pleasantly overwhelmed before darkening the entrance of
this curvaceous and very circular museum. In my research, there is nothing subtle about this bold
and dramatically designed museum. Even though the museum is considered modern, it is said the

Kimbell Art Museum
The Museum of Modern Art and its Impact on Museum Architecture During the early part of the
twentieth century, the architecture of art museums shifted in the United States. As the role and
purpose of museums changed with the times, so did the buildings that housed the artwork.
Architects designed specific museum sites as opposed to converting royal palaces. While some
museums take inspiration from other successful museums, others break the mold and become the
new standard. The Louvre in Paris became the model museum during the nineteenth century
(McClellan, 1994, p. 12). The Louvre established guidelines for displaying and hanging artwork. Its
Grand Gallery spaces established ideal guidelines for viewing distances and heights (McClellan, ...

Goodwin and Stone rejected the Beaux–Arts movement previously seen at museums during the
early part of the twentieth century (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 59). In many cases, it was the opposite of
traditional museums. The Museum of Modern Art was not designed with grand halls or spacious
rooms like traditional museums (Ricciotti, 1985, p.59). The walls were covered in light textured
cloth which was later on adopted by other museums (Ricciotti, p. 1985, p. 57). The building was
divided into smaller gallery spaces as compared to the Louvre. Additionally, the artwork in the
museum was also a smaller residential scale because many pieces came from collector's homes
(Ricciotti, 1985, p. 57). Furthermore, the museum is set in a densely populated area which limits the
square footage (Ricciotti, 1985, p.57). The Museum of Modern Art was contained on multiple
stories and designed vertically, as opposed to horizontally sprawling museums like the Louvre and
other palatial museums (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 59). Goodwin and Stone created a museum that impacted
museum architecture in the twentieth century. It was a "decisive break with conventional museum
design (Wallach, 1992, p. 209)." The Museum of Modern Art became one of the most architecturally
influential museums of the twentieth century (Merkel, 2002, p. 71; Ricciotti, 1985, p. 52). This
influence helped establish the modern model of a museum building. The

Architecture And Architecture : Architect Frank Gehry
When asked to state a preferred sculptural work, few seldom answer in terms of architecture.
Usually, when the term architecture is brought up, those of us who are non–architects tend to close
mindedly think only about buildings. This apparent disconnect between what is conceived as
architecture and what is conceived as art has long plagued the architects of this world. It is almost as
if there is an accepted notion that architects can be artists, but artists simply cannot be architects
which decidedly makes architecture first and foremost architecture, not art. Architect Frank Gehry is
one such architect with artistic tendencies whose works have fallen victim to the preconceived ideas
of architecture as art. Having a love for sculpture before entering into the world of architecture, it
makes sense that Gehry would attempt to conceive works where both of his passions could shine
through. Ultimately, this is what would motivate Gehry to create structures in which art and
architecture could be seen as equals. In the end, however, Gehry's goal of designing buildings where
art and architecture were of the same importance would eventually become a self–contradictory
objective. This can best be seen in the design of Gehry's most renowned work, the Guggenheim
Museum in Bilbao, Spain. By attempting to combine the most interesting aspects of art and
architecture into one massive building, Gehry created a structure so revolutionary that it, like
himself, would forever be known not

The Five Characteristics Of Tom Otterness
Tom Otterness was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1952. He moved to New York City in 1970 to study
at Arts Students League. He is a artist who's work I find really interesting. He is now world
renowned for his unique sculptures being very oval in shape and funny looking. They are made of
caster or metal and his sculptures are always doing some activity or motion.
His beautiful artworks are now displayed in many institutions around the country being Brooklyn
Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of
Modern Art. Otterness has even been named the 'best public art' sculpture for his works.
He gained this reputation through making numerous public sculptures of human beings or animal
figures that display the American society. Otterness showcased the American society by creating
sculptures that are, "Disarmingly cute and cartoonish, and underpinned by art history, popular
culture, and a democratic vision, his characters mock societal groups." This has resulted in him
populating numerous public areas with his creativity of his sculptures.
According to Tom Otterness his artwork can be distinguished into five characteristics which are:
blue collar workers, white collar workers, cops, radicals and rich people. This are the characteristics
he bases his sculptures on. Which results in the marvelous figures that are now on display around
New York especially the subway.

Architectural Qualities Of The Guggenheim Museum
Architectural qualities of the Guggenheim Museum in New York have an expressional capability of
conveying meaning onto its user. William Whyte suggests that this is able to be read as a language,
related directly to its spatial features and geometries. This essay attempts to examine the
Guggenheim's meaning in a contextual framework of time, through the medium of photography.
Discussing critical interpretation at the time of the Guggenheim's completion, and how socio–
cultural changes have translated different means of understanding the architecture and its language,
and importantly, whether this is a good thing or not. Meaningful interpretation of architecture has
been suggested by Whyte to be readable, complex across different sets of media, and subject to
change throughout time. The contrasts of the photographic medium in the 1950s with today's era
vary greatly in terms of accessibility, abundance, and publishing control. Architectural photography
in the 50s was placed in edited sources, Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Journals, Advertisements,
whereas today images of architectural photography are largely obtained through online search
engines such as Google Images, and Flikr. Some key questions examined in the essay relate to the
intent of the photographer, production bias, and the medium in which the photograph is presented
and how this has an affect on the way in which the Guggenheim was likely understood at the time of
its opening, and how it is read today, by users

Before Frank Lloyd Wright was born his mother knew he was going to be a world renowned

Lloyd Wright was born on June 8 ,1869. He was always very close to his mother, and when his
father left Frank went off to work to help his mother raise the other children. Frank's father also had
a large impact on his son's life. Able to play a dozen instruments, he taught Frank to play the piano,

because he didn't want to build classical buildings, he wanted to build using a new innovative style.
Not long after Wright was building houses for himself, his partner, Cecil decided to go east and
pursue a different vocation. Wright missed him and finally moved into a loft that another friend

Wright's stubbornness often scared away clients that wanted classical Greek style houses, but Frank
usually won clients over with his sincerity. Frank got a contract to build a factory building in
Buffalo, New York. Frank wanted to build around the function of the building. He even added a set
of open air stair cases that would allow air intake for the ventilation systems as well as a way of

money for the stair cases. He got the job and hired a builder that he had worked with at Adler and

This essay will inform the contrasts of two very important art galleries built 9 years apart. The
Guggenheim, 1943–59, was built solely for Solomon R, Guggenheim to exhibit his collection of

one of the architect's most important public projects , the architect being Frank Lloyd Wright. The
building that will be put into contrast with the Guggenheim is the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin,
1962–68. Mies Van der Rohe was asked to design this new gallery during the modernism period in
an act to revive the city of Berlin after the war as part of 'Kultureforum', a development of new
cultural institutions . The Guggenheim museum in New York is unlike any other art gallery/

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Museum

  • 1. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Museum The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Before the mid–twentieth century, museums in Europe and the United States were generally planned in variations of the neoclassical style. But, the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao moved the heading of gallery outlines, which gave an extensive show venue to twentieth century and modern art, designed by the famous architect Frank Gehry. Architecture is important nowadays to the public, because it offers a physical surrounding environment in where we live in. Moreover, architecture is not only affected by the culture, but also by the economy of the country. Frank Gehry is one of the handful modern architects that are worldwide known by his inventive and pioneering work. The American Canadian architect was born Frank Owen Goldberg in Toronto, Canada on February 28, 1929, based in Los Angeles since 1962. He studied architecture at the University of Southern California and city planning in Harvard University. Gehry is known for his postmodern structures and unusual inventions. His most popular buildings include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum that represents modern and contemporary art. Its story first begins when Thomas Krens the director of Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation in New York City, was looking for a museum location in Europe. He chose the industrial wasteland in the middle of the city on a curve of the Nervion River. The site was located in the center of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Two Franks and Their Architecture Essay Different architects have different styles because they are trying to get at different things. Architecture is not just about making something beautiful anymore, it is about trying to get across a set of ideas about how we inhabit space. Two of the most famous architects of the twentieth century, one from each side, the early part and the later part up until today each designed a museum with money donated by the Guggenheim foundation. One of these is in New York City, it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The other is in bilbao, Spain, and it was designed by Frank Geary. My purpose of this paper is to interrogate each of these buildings, glorious for different reasons, to show how each architect was expressing their own style. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a very functional approach. I am only going to talk about the outside of Frank Geary's museum because I have never been there, and I have only seen pictures on the internet. This building is surprisingly attractive because the other building that we saw in class of his, his house in Santa Monica, had a great deal of "ugliness," to use an official term. His house in Santa Monica was supposed to look unfinished, with an emphasis on the materials used in construction. This building, however, looks as if it has been wrapped in silver. It looks very futuristic, and angular, so it could be functional as a museum as a museum because people will know it holds modern art. I like the way that it catches reflections, almost mirroring the surrounding buildings. So, in these two examples we see very different approaches to architecture. One has an impressive inside and the other one has an appealing outside. Also, both seem to be departures for the architects from their normal modes–– Wright's building doesn't blend in with nature, and Geary's doesn't look deconstructed into small parts. Now if only they could has worked together on one project, then we would have a museum that would be perfect inside and out. The Falling Water House that was built by Frank Lloyd Wright is an embodiment of organic architecture. It has a stone face that was the same tonal feeling of the rock that surrounds the building. There is a feeling that is inspired in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The French Theorist Guy Debord In 1967, the french theorist Guy Debord, outlined his concept for a future spectacle society, whereby ..... "Quote about capital". Presented as a treatise on the modern humman condition; Society of the Spectacle is a piece that explores the contemporary effects of power, which it seems in more recent times are becoming increasingly tied with the idea of a media and consumer society; a system based off the production and consumption of images, information and commodities. In the discourse of arhcitecture specifically, it seems Debords predictions have bled into the culture of modern design, as expressed by Anthony Vidler: "Recent proposals and debates over the architectutural devlopment of ground zero have highlighted the way in which, over the last two decades, the public role of architecture has been gradually reduced to the symbolic and the emblematic. Its forms of expresion are no longer closely tied back to urban issues and physical planning questions." (Toward a theory of the architectural program, antohny vidler, page 1) These discussions and critiques, indeed, seem to bear out Guy Debords 1964 anticipation of an all–pervading spectacle culture where in essense, we have moved into a system of architecture overinvested in symbolic form, "where flash and bravura win out over contemplation". (– nordic from on aestehtics and function in architecture – page 1. ) , with focus on the factors that contribute to its aid and the influence they posses. And secondly, if that ... • 7. How Did Frank Lloyd Wright Build Skyscrapers Creating Masterpieces Surely everybody has been to the top of a building or a skyscraper in their life? Almost everybody has been to some kind of monument or statue as well. Do you even think to yourself how these beautiful, extravagant projects have been built? Many people overlook this aspect of the design not knowing the confusion and intelligence that goes into these types of skyscrapers or statues. This is where Frank Lloyd wright comes in: an architect who has helped in so many "invisible" ways. Frank Lloyd Wright significantly benefitted society by inspiring younger architects to pursue the career, designing safe and sufficient buildings for society, and also created a learning aspect of architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright, one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wright not only showed the entire globe what he could do but also impacted society to the point that it has almost changed. • 9. Essay on Zaha Hadid: Making Utopia a Reality in Architecture "Utopia: n .an impractical idealistic scheme for social and political reform" – The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition For over twenty years the Iraqi–born, English educated architect Zaha Hadid has symbolized the vanguard of contemporary architecture. She has pushed back the boundaries of built form to forge a highly individualist architectonic language that is at once thrillingly dynamic and intensely thoughtful, and as a result now has an enormous following of students, practitioners and builders. Most people recognize her hand through the striking drawings and paintings that represent her work, but the beauty of her illustrations tend to obscure the fact that she is an architect who builds, due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her designs she tries to break away from the vitruvian prepositions that govern the normal, conventional architecture that is being used today. Fortunately for her she has been able to showcase some of these ideas as can be seen in her first built project which is the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. The project began as a commission to build a fire station in the northeast section of the vast Vitra furniture factory complex as well as design boundary walls, a bicycle shed and other small elements. In this relatively small structure she used unusual shapes and angles that architectural critics had admired in her conceptual work throughout the 1980s. Since the site already contained large–scale factory buildings, she decided to concentrate on the site as a zone within the industrial landscape so as to place the elements of the building in such a way that they would not get lost between the enormous factory sheds. As can be expected the inside of the building is as interesting as the exterior with multiple optical tricks being played on the viewer. The design's primary feature is a series of layered screening walls, between which spaces are created according to the station's functions. Her interplay of angles and colors makes the interior as visually interesting as the exterior without making it look too busy. One of the most noticeable features of this building is how glimpses of the large red fire engines can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Deer In The Forest 1 Analysis The Philips Collection located at 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009 is a block north of DuPont Circle, and houses a collection of Modern painting from a multitude of modern art movements including German Expressionism to Abstract Expression. These paintings adorn the walls of the first three floors, and the basement contains the library. The Phillips collection not only houses paintings, but also has an array of modern sculptures, and photographs too. The dialogue created between the viewers and the artwork exhibits was immense and thought provoking. However, two paintings considerably stood out. Reclining Figure, an oil painting produced by Pablo Picasso in the year of 1934 mounts a wall on the third floor, and has the dimensions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Muted colors are toned down by reducing the saturation of color. The use of muted colors is an archetypal characteristic of the Cubism art movement, as a way to focus on the subject matter (The deer), creates shallow space, and not distract the viewer. The color pallet consists of the muted primary colors of blue, red, and yellow. Franz Marc always associated color to certain meanings, and his approach to color theory is stated in a letter written to fellow artist August Macke which says "Blue is the male principle, astringent and spiritual. Yellow is the female principle, gentle, gay and spiritual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy and always the color to be opposed and overcome by the other two" (Marc). However, in the composition of the painting, the colors in the background go from blue, then red is directly located behind the group of deer, then a tinge of yellow. The color blue ensconces and surrounds the red, except for the upper portion of the left hand side, which is offset by a dash of yellow. Mixed from the color blue on the right side, and the yellow on the left, the secondary color of green swallows up the rest of the upper half of the background. Secondary colors like orange and green, are used on the lower portion of the composition, in which the deer are colored orange, and the foliage is green. • 13. The Broad Collection Essay The Broad Collection is a contemporary art museum being built in downtown Los Angeles. When completed, it will showcase Eli and Edythe Broad's art collection, consisting of nearly 2,000 prominent works of art. The building's façade was designed to look honeycomb–like and include a glass curtain wall. Seele Inc., a Germany–based engineering company, was hired as a subcontractor to begin work on the facade in 2012, after spending three months consulting with the New York City architecture firm of Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, who created the original renderings. The Broad Collection is now suing Seele, alleging that the engineering firm put the project at least 15 months behind schedule. Additional claims against the engineering firm include breach of contract, specific performance, and fraud in the inducement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Seele also agreed that its work would be "of extraordinary quality, consistent with 'world–renowned German engineering.'" Yet when it came time for Seele to present its mock–ups, they showed the firm "ignored the design intent ... [and] violated the important 'aesthetic aspect' of the architect's design." Seele suggested using precast concrete, instead of the lighter, agreed–to fiber–reinforced concrete. Little Frank And His Carp Rhetorical Analysis Little Frank and his Carp: A Gallery Talk 1989 is a video in where artist Andrea Fraser tours through the atrium of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao as a visitor listening to an audio guide. The opening shot show us waiting in line to receive the audio guide device when ,Dressed in a green dress, Fraser, walks into the lobby, speaks to the museum staff and receives her audio device, and begins her guide through the museum. Using conventional elements of a gallery tour, the narrator of the audio tour offers his thoughts on the building's aesthetics with intimate description. Fraser employs comical parody to stereotypical mannerisms one comes to expect from a visitor of a museum in her performance, applying in–depth and embellished praise to the items she comes across. Often there is a weird disconnection between Fraser reaction and the atrium description. Most people in the United States talk of stock exchange, referring to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). NYSE is the largest in the world with increasing importance of Internet trading, moving more and more from a physical trading floor to a global network of exchanges linked electronically from cyber space (Jill, 2006). Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, also known as Guggenheim by the majority, was established in 1939 by Solomon R. Guggenheim as a museum of Non–Objective Painting. They met with Hilla Von Rebay who was an artist in 1926, who in turn introduced him to European Avant–grade art of which she felt had some spiritual and utopian aspect. (Heartney, 1999). As a result, Guggenheim changed his strategy of collecting and turned to the work of Wassily Kandinsky, just to mention. Initially, he displayed his collection at his apartment in New York City to the public. His collection grew and in 1937, he established Solomon R. Explain The Differences Between The Hayward Gallery Explain the differences between the Hayward gallery (1968) and its South Bank neighbour, the Royal Festival Hall (1951) in terms of their planning and finishing and in the different ways they relate to their urban context. While there are many similarities between the Hayward Gallery and Royal Festival Hall, there also are a number of differences in terms of planning and finishing in relation to urban context. Higgs and Hill built the Hayward Gallery, which opened on The 9th of July. It is an art gallery located in the Southbank Centre, which is a key arts venue in Central London. Until early 2011 the gallery was simply known as the Hayward. The Royal Festival Hall is situated adjacent to the Hayward Gallery. It is a famous dance, concert and talks venue with a capacity of 2500. It was the first the post–war building to listed as a Grade 1 building. The Hall officially opened on 3rd May 1951 and was built as part of the Festival of Britain for the London County Council. • 21. The Similarities Of Frank Wright And Frank OGehry More and more people create our hotels, schools, homes, theme parks, and several other structures. Those people are called architects, they are people who design buildings and construct them in some cases. People may also define them as scientists and artists. Frank Wright and Frank O'Gehry are similar, however, they have their own unique style and design when it comes to buildings. Frank Wright (1867–1959), is an American architect born on June 8th in Richland Center, Wisconsin (Biography.com n.d.). A modern design, he produced an organic and clear American style (Architectural Digest n.d.). Wright founded his own firm and developed the Prairie School– single– story homes with low, slanted roofs and extended rows on the windowpane, using the available materials from local business and clean and not painted wood (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). The Robie House (Figure 1) located in Chicago and Unity Temple placed in Oak Park (Biography.com n.d.). Wright was known mainly in Europe but not in the United States. In 1913, Wright designed his home on his maternal ancestors land in Spring Green, Wisconsin (Architectural Digest n.d.). This home was named Taliesin, sadly it got burnt down twice and he still remodeled it again (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica 2017). Wright wrote two books in 1932: "An Autobiography" and "The Disappearing City," both are known as architectural literature (Biography.com n.d.). In addition, to publishing the two books, he ... Helen Clay Frick Research Paper For nearly 80 years, visitors to a New York art museum called the Frick Collection have stood behind a velvet rope at the bottom of a sweeping marble staircase and longed to see the private rooms upstairs. By 2020, they will be able to satisfy their curiosity. That's because Henry Clay Frick's three–story mansion in New York City, which opened as a museum in 1935, is going to turn private living quarters into exhibition space and expand with a 42,000–square–foot addition. Two of the Frick family's second–floor bedrooms plus a sitting room and breakfast room will become galleries. • 27. The Themes Of Contemporary Art In this essay, I would be demonstrating how the topic of contemporary art and the politics of art institutions reflects and relates to Rajni Perera's 3 figures and VHT. With formal analysis of these artworks and readings from this topics, I would show the differences and similarities between these topics. Contemporary art represents what we see as individuals in society today, it does not follow the set rules of art. For instance, modern art looks and follows modernist theories, likewise, impressionisms which looks at our perception and understanding of a moment through light and color in contrasts to that of realism which represents subject matter accurately without any alteration or addition. On the other hand contemporary art does not have one conclusive or definitive view. Its view is versatile and flexible which reflects the diversity of the world today, themes of contemporary are notably about politics, globalization, social issues, migration and technology. In like manner, the theme I drew from Perera's artworks which is diversity. Perera is Sri Lankan artist, who grew up and was raised in Scarborough and North York. I find her works diverse notably in the materials she chose. She uses laundry drying racks which are unconventional materials to create her VHT sculpture. She does not conform to the regular norms of using clay or plaster. I also found this as a reoccurring theme of contemporary art and the Migrating the Margins exhibition at the Art Gallery of ... • 29. The Unity Temple By Frank Lloyd Wright 1st Artwork– Unity Temple, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, completed in 1908 Frank Lloyd Wright's career was just beginning to take off in Oak Park, Illinois. One of the most significant projects from his early career is Unity Temple near his home and studio in Oak Park. Unity Temple was a replacement church for Unitarian Universalist Church that had burned down in 1905. Unity Temple was not just an ordinary commission for Wright since he was a parishioner of the Unitarian Church in Oak Park. When Unity Church burned to the ground in June 1905, Wright was awarded the commission. He wanted a modern building that would embody the principles of "unity, truth, beauty, simplicity, freedom and reason." For Wright, the church was meant to be a temple for man to worship god, which coincided with Wright's decision to abandon the typical New England Unitarian, white steeple, architectural style for a more modern concrete aesthetic. Also the church 's budget was relatively low for a project of this scale, approximately $40,000. In harmony with Wright's philosophy of organic architecture, the concrete was left uncovered by plaster, brick, or stone. Wright's sensitive handling of materials was a defining feature of his architecture from early in his career. "Bring out the nature of the materials, Wright insisted, let their nature intimately into your scheme. Reveal the nature of wood, plaster, brick, or stone in your designs, they are all by nature friendly and beautiful. No ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As it became a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world being once the city's main source of income. The following question arises from the assentation: what exactly makes the Guggenheim Bilbao an architectural masterpiece? Between art and architecture, there is a lifelong bond. They are rather like light and shadow; one cannot exist without the other. Even the word "masterpiece", used here to describe something architectural, holds a strong connotation with fine arts. In the case of Gehry's Guggenheim museum Bilbao, the building is a three–dimensional abstract representation of something real in nature. It is mostly made up of organic curves and reflective materials that reflect light and the free forms of nature. Additionally, the artwork in the museum was also a smaller residential scale because many pieces came from collector's homes (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 57). Furthermore, the museum is set in a densely populated area which limits the square footage (Ricciotti, 1985, p.57). The Museum of Modern Art was contained on multiple stories and designed vertically, as opposed to horizontally sprawling museums like the Louvre and other palatial museums (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 59). Goodwin and Stone created a museum that impacted museum architecture in the twentieth century. It was a "decisive break with conventional museum design (Wallach, 1992, p. 209)." The Museum of Modern Art became one of the most architecturally influential museums of the twentieth century (Merkel, 2002, p. 71; Ricciotti, 1985, p. 52). This influence helped establish the modern model of a museum building. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Trading With The Enemy 'And' Fly By Night (CAM) The Contemporary Art Museum is one of the most visited in Tampa. It opened its door in 1989 near the USF College of The Art. The museum has presented numerous exhibitions of contemporary art from the United States and around the world including Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The museum's primary objective is to bring the University and Tampa Bay community vital, investigative and scholarly contemporary exhibitions (aboutsufcam). In doing so (CAM) is able to present to the community a variety of exhibitions with different methods and culture from around the world. "Fly by Night" is a beautiful visual experience that Riley wanted to share with people, in the way of his general appreciation that New York city has given to him. For six weekends at the Brooklyn Navy Yard more than 2,000 pigeons were put on an avian powered light show and hundreds of tiny lights shot up (Newman, Andy). The inspiration for "Fly by Night" came during the process of the "Trading with the Enemy" where he put a light on one of the birds which made him thinks what it would be like to see more of them. To develop this project, he need help from a team, including a technician from China. Today, the illuminated birds may be visible from other nearby vantage points, and if preferable it can be seen in person. The performances of "Fly by Night" are free, but seats should be reserved. Even though I did not see the actual performance, I was able to see the painting illustrating the LED lights. When I walked into the room where they were displaced I wasn't sure what was the meaning behind it, but I must say that I was impressed. He used a dark blue as the background and white linear strips that gave the art piece a phenomena look. The piece is a great representation of the work he has in display in New ... • 61. Architecture And Architecture : Architect Frank Gehry When asked to state a preferred sculptural work, few seldom answer in terms of architecture. Usually, when the term architecture is brought up, those of us who are non–architects tend to close mindedly think only about buildings. This apparent disconnect between what is conceived as architecture and what is conceived as art has long plagued the architects of this world. It is almost as if there is an accepted notion that architects can be artists, but artists simply cannot be architects which decidedly makes architecture first and foremost architecture, not art. Architect Frank Gehry is one such architect with artistic tendencies whose works have fallen victim to the preconceived ideas of architecture as art. Having a love for sculpture before entering into the world of architecture, it makes sense that Gehry would attempt to conceive works where both of his passions could shine through. Ultimately, this is what would motivate Gehry to create structures in which art and architecture could be seen as equals. In the end, however, Gehry's goal of designing buildings where art and architecture were of the same importance would eventually become a self–contradictory objective. This can best be seen in the design of Gehry's most renowned work, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. By attempting to combine the most interesting aspects of art and architecture into one massive building, Gehry created a structure so revolutionary that it, like himself, would forever be known not ... • 63. National Building Museum: Pension Building I've never been exposed to paintings, or sculpture, but my career has given me exposure to construction and architecture. My favorite work of art is the National Building Museum (Pension Building) in Washington DC. The building was designed by Montgomery C. Meigs. Construction began in 1881 and completed in 1887. Meigs based his design on Italian Renaissance precedents, notably Rome's Palazzo Farnese and the Palazzo della Cancelleria. The building is the largest frameless, freestanding brick building in the world. (wikipedia hasn't been updated) The entire structure is made of 15,500,000 bricks, including the massive columns. It is the largest building ever built of load–bearing bricks. Meigs alternated the window designs like that of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Five Characteristics Of Tom Otterness Tom Otterness was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1952. He moved to New York City in 1970 to study at Arts Students League. He is a artist who's work I find really interesting. He is now world renowned for his unique sculptures being very oval in shape and funny looking. They are made of caster or metal and his sculptures are always doing some activity or motion. His beautiful artworks are now displayed in many institutions around the country being Brooklyn Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art. Otterness has even been named the 'best public art' sculpture for his works. He gained this reputation through making numerous public sculptures of human beings or animal figures that display the American society. Otterness showcased the American society by creating sculptures that are, "Disarmingly cute and cartoonish, and underpinned by art history, popular culture, and a democratic vision, his characters mock societal groups." This has resulted in him populating numerous public areas with his creativity of his sculptures. According to Tom Otterness his artwork can be distinguished into five characteristics which are: blue collar workers, white collar workers, cops, radicals and rich people. This are the characteristics he bases his sculptures on. Which results in the marvelous figures that are now on display around New York especially the subway. But through those five characteristics he implements four topics which are: money, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bouffrand: Salon de la Princess, hotel de Soubise, Paris, France, begun 1730's Salon de la Princess, is a many sided cylindrical interior room and is part of the Rococo style that incorporates minimal architectural features and light airy decor, that develops into a profession of interior design. Rococo is the revolt against complicated Baroque that decorated the interior of Versailles, in revolt against the palace and after the death of Louis XIV, French women who had city houses in Paris inspired a new lightened airy style of decor and architecture. However, with the inspiration of the French landscape painter Claude, the landscape at this Palladian estate is completely manmade, with hills, lakes, trees, meant to look as nature had created it, and as in Claude's' landscapes it can be divided up into three layers, incorporating a dark foreground, light middle ground and light hazy background. Stooped in classical Roman tradition the garden is a place to break the rules, and Stourhead has architectural samples from all over the world incorporated into the landscape as temples, grottoes, and classical statues together with a Chinese bridge, and Turkish tent, which set a president from 1750 on where naughty architectural elements present themselves in architectural structures. This eclectic style is the bases of 19th and 20th century American suburbs, including new ones being built around the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia today, while also emerging in 20th century architects as Wright, who in the Robbie House(1900s) combined inspirations from many different cultures past and present. 3. There's one particular image that stands out to you through. It's a large, black and white poster of a woman looking into a broken mirror. The words "You are not yourself" are written across it in bold cut–out letters. You stop to think to yourself about the possible meanings of this poster. It shows the apparent work of a feminist sowing women's struggle with her own self– image. Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist as well as a transformational leader, states Wikipedia (1). • 71. Architectural Qualities Of The Guggenheim Museum Architectural qualities of the Guggenheim Museum in New York have an expressional capability of conveying meaning onto its user. William Whyte suggests that this is able to be read as a language, related directly to its spatial features and geometries. This essay attempts to examine the Guggenheim's meaning in a contextual framework of time, through the medium of photography. Discussing critical interpretation at the time of the Guggenheim's completion, and how socio– cultural changes have translated different means of understanding the architecture and its language, and importantly, whether this is a good thing or not. Meaningful interpretation of architecture has been suggested by Whyte to be readable, complex across different sets of media, and subject to change throughout time. The contrasts of the photographic medium in the 1950s with today's era vary greatly in terms of accessibility, abundance, and publishing control. Architectural photography in the 50s was placed in edited sources, Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Journals, Advertisements, whereas today images of architectural photography are largely obtained through online search engines such as Google Images, and Flikr. Some key questions examined in the essay relate to the intent of the photographer, production bias, and the medium in which the photograph is presented and how this has an affect on the way in which the Guggenheim was likely understood at the time of its opening, and how it is read today, by users ... • 73. The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright Essay The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright Before Frank Lloyd Wright was born his mother knew he was going to be a world renowned architect. In his nursery, she hung prints of well known cathedrals of Europe on the walls. Frank Lloyd Wright was born on June 8 ,1869. He was always very close to his mother, and when his father left Frank went off to work to help his mother raise the other children. Frank's father also had a large impact on his son's life. Able to play a dozen instruments, he taught Frank to play the piano, the violin and the cello. Frank refused this offer, because he didn't want to build classical buildings, he wanted to build using a new innovative style. Not long after Wright was building houses for himself, his partner, Cecil decided to go east and pursue a different vocation. Wright missed him and finally moved into a loft that another friend rented. Wright's stubbornness often scared away clients that wanted classical Greek style houses, but Frank usually won clients over with his sincerity. Frank got a contract to build a factory building in Buffalo, New York. Frank wanted to build around the function of the building. He even added a set of open air stair cases that would allow air intake for the ventilation systems as well as a way of communicating. Frank went to Buffalo for the interview and persuaded the owner to give extra money for the stair cases. He got the job and hired a builder that he had worked with at Adler and Sullivans. • 75. Art Building 1943-59 This essay will inform the contrasts of two very important art galleries built 9 years apart. The Guggenheim, 1943–59, was built solely for Solomon R, Guggenheim to exhibit his collection of both modern and contemporary art from around the world. This building in New York was said to be one of the architect's most important public projects , the architect being Frank Lloyd Wright. The building that will be put into contrast with the Guggenheim is the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, 1962–68. Mies Van der Rohe was asked to design this new gallery during the modernism period in an act to revive the city of Berlin after the war as part of 'Kultureforum', a development of new cultural institutions . The Guggenheim museum in New York is unlike any other art gallery/ museum in the world. Its round, top heavy shape is something like no other and Wright prided himself on this artistic integrity1. The section of the Guggenheim, shown in Figure 3, shows that the main exhibition spaces are ramped from the top floor all the way down to the ground floor. This was a very ... However, during the announcement of the exhibition, the museum did not mention that it was simultaneously entering into a three–year agreement in which Armani pledged a donation of $15 million to Guggenheim. Corporate members come from numerous sectors, from retail to educational to financial services (see Exhibit 2 for a list of corporate members for the Guggenheim Museum). This diversity in corporate sponsorship helps promote the diversity in audience that the Guggenheim Foundation is looking to attract by reaching out to people working in different sectors and in various locations around the world. To determine whether the Armani exhibition is considered a sell–out, the relationship between the objectives of the Armani exhibition and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation's mission statement plays a central role. Since the mission statement allows for interpretation of what is considered art in the modern and contemporary periods, the Armani exhibition does fit into this mission. Additionally, since the Foundation strives to put on "exceptional exhibitions" for an "increasingly diverse international audience," the Armani exhibition fulfills this part of the mission because it attracted a high level of attention—from celebrities to experts in the fashion industry to businesspeople—who came from different parts of the world to see the famous works of Armani. Thus, this exhibition does appear to fulfill the mission of the Foundation. However, it is important to note that while at face value the Armani exhibition seems to fulfill the mission of the Foundation, the actual Armani exhibition itself tells a different story.
