Editor's Notes
Basic Review of each of these topics.
Answer any questions prior to proceeding to the next section (if the group size is appropriate).
If you have a Student USA Jobs account and are no longer a student, you will need to create a new account under USA Jobs.
If you have students that are interested in working for the government, there is a Student USA Jobs website – www.studentjobs.gov.
Don’t hesitate to look at the Sample Resume.
If you make your resume ‘searchable’ – then if a Department or Agency pays to ‘search’ the database your resume could be viewed if it meets the search parameter the Agency/Department sets up. If you resume is not ‘searchable’ then it will not be searched even if your resume meets their search criteria.
This will also include your current position.
Highlight the “+ Add Work Experience’ button.
Employment History should reflect at least the last 10 years, but if the position you are applying for has duties similar to a position you held 15 years ago – go back 15 years!
Relevant coursework, licensures, certifications – could be CPR certified, etc.
Highlight the “+ Add Education’ button.
Any type of training that you have attended, even if it was a college/university course – like GIS mapping course.
Additional Information includes awards, leadership activities, etc.
Availability & Specific Work Environment reflects the type of work & work schedule you are interested, as well as the work-environment, retiree, student, part-time, tele-work, etc.
Desired locations – you can choose multiple states & cities.
Make sure that all of your references are relevant and that their contact information is current & correct.
Affiliations include civic groups, such as Rotary, etc.
Make sure you activate your resume – if you don’t activate your resume then it will not be attached to your completed application.
Assistance with the USA Jobs website, including your account should be done with the USA Jobs Support Service Desk at mayday@fedjobs.gov. You should allow 24-48 hours for the Support Service Desk to respond and assist you.
Search Agents perform the task of search the entire USA Jobs website and the posted jobs for vacancy announcements for positions that meet your selected criteria.
The search agent will send you email as frequently as you schedule them to alert you – daily, weekly, etc. They will not stop until you delete the Search Agent.
The search criteria can be as detailed/limited or as broad/generic as possible.
Applicant Eligibility - If you can answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions – click the button YES.
Are you a current or former Federal civilian employee who holds or held a non-temporary appointment:
In the competitive service in the Executive Branch or in a position not in the Executive branch specifically included in the competitive service by statute, or
In an excepted service position covered by an interchange agreement, or
Eligible for reinstatement?
A Veteran eligible for veterans’ preference or separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after 3 years or more of continuous military service?
A person with non-competitive appointment eligibility?
Your applications tracks all of the positions that you have applied for. It is a nice feature that keeps you organized & on task.
Within “My Applications” – you can review the actually vacancy announcement. This is important because once a vacancy announcement closes on USA Jobs, you can not ‘search’ for that vacancy announcement. The search agent will say that there are no vacancies that meet your search criteria. Google will not even come up with that old vacancy announcement.
Please read the vacancy announcement carefully – if the Department or Agency can not receive upload documents via their USA Jobs account, then you need to follow the directions in the vacancy announcement to ensure that any additional documents are received by the agency by the established deadline in the vacancy announcement.
Some agencies do NOT accept USA Job resumes – so it is a good idea to have a resume in a Word document that is similar in content to your USA Jobs resume.
Also some agencies have their own internal application process, in addition to the USA Jobs application process – so read the vacancy announcement very carefully – the agency may not accept a USA Jobs resume, and you have to create a resume & answer the vacancy related questions through the agency’s employment portal – if this is the case – then there is usually a link within the USA Jobs vacancy announcement that takes you directly to the agency’s employment portal.
Maintain a current e-mail address to ensure you receive your search agent listings, as well as correspondence regarding positions that you have applied for.
