problems, what would it be? This is the thought of the movie Pay it Forward. This movie tackles
what a small child 's (Trevor) idea of changing the world could be from his point of view. The movie
also tackles themes of alcoholism, bullying, and insecurity.
Pay it Forward starts in a very interesting way; a news reporter's car is wrecked, and a man gives
him a brand new car, saying simply call it a favor between two strangers and "pay it forward." This
idea then proceeds throughout the story as the reporter traces the origins back to Trevor(Haley
Osment) and the origin of the pay it forward mindset. It is an assignment given by his teacher, Mr.
Eugene (Kevin Spacey) for each child in the room to find a way to change the world. Throughout
the movie, this theme is elaborated on, and in many cases, it seems to backfire, only to work out for
the better of the film. The acting in this film is phenomenal. Kevin Spacey gives an inspiring
performance, while Haley Osment provides the innocent kid that is neglected but has a great idea to

As a photography major, it was never clear to me on why I had to take a drawing class. I dreaded
each class because of the known fact that I didn't possess the skills to be a good drawer. When
speaking to friends and family, I would always complain to them saying, "I'm going to fail this class.
I have no idea why I have to take these drawing classes." As the quarter went on and the more I
learned about the different drawing techniques such as the use of lighting to create interesting
shadows or the use of color to create a sense mood and emotion, I began to realize the parallels that
drawing and photography have.
It's very important to train your eyes as a photographer because you gain new perspective of your
surroundings and you begin to pay more attention to little details. Drawing has helped train my eye
to pay attention to details such as lines, shadows, light, proportion, texture, and color. When
working on each drawing project such as the still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, I would notice my
eye rapidly going back and forth from the subject to the paper trying to focus on all the details,
whether it be the reflection of light on a cup or vase, the shadows on the busts, or the vibrant colors
in the landscape drawing. I would do my best to try and accurately transfer what was in front of me

My own short attention span shined through while reading his article. I even prefer quick, short
news updates to reading detailed articles about what's going on in the world, which causes me to
miss some vital information. He's right, it's an issue, and it's only getting worse. Children are known
for short attention spans already, are we really not doing enough to prevent it from developing
further? I personally like the use of the SLANT method, "Sit up, Look and Listen to the speaker,
Ask questions, Nod, and Track the teacher" (Schwartz per. 13). This method trains children to
always keep focus in various ways. I believe its continued use during the early grades would be a
tremendous help as they progress. Another option would be to make the subject more enjoyable to
the child. When it comes to what I choose to read, anything, no matter the length, will keep my
attention if it genuinely interests me. Just the same, some books for high school English classes
bored me to the point that I hardly read them and let my grades suffer; while others I was so excited
to start reading that I was happy to dedicate extra hours to them. Children need to 'want' to focus,
without a goal they won't see any reason to continue. Give them a goal, give them a reason to enjoy
the subject matter, teach them that it is okay to love learning about anything and everything. If they
