Emperor Penguin Cycle
Emperor Penguin
Introduction:
The Emperor Penguin, also scientifically known as Aptenodytes forsteri, is the tallest and heaviest
of all penguin species. The Emperor Penguin is native to Antarctica and is near threatened with a
stable population. If living in the wild, it generally has a lifespan of around 20 years, but an
individual can reach 50 years of age. The Emperor penguin reproduces sexually, meaning two
parents are required during the reproduction process. Emperor penguins reach sexual maturity at the
age of 3.
Reproductive parts:
Unlike humans and many other animals, female Emperor Penguins do not have a vagina and the
males do not have a penis. The main male reproductive parts are the testis, ureter, vas deferens and
cloaca. The testis grow in size during mating season to produce more sperm. The sperm then travels
through the ureter and a tube called the vas deferens. This then leads to the cloaca where the sperm
is stored. The cloaca is also an opening of the digestive, reproductive and urinary tract. The main
female reproductive parts include the ovaries, where the eggs are produced, the oviduct which is
where the egg travels through, a uterus, ureter and a cloaca which leads to the ovaries.

Penguins travel 70 miles to reach a specific destination made for mating purposes. They choose one
mate and "marry" their mate for the entire season. If they already had a mate the year before they
may stay with the same mate. Emperor penguins find a mate by wandering around, singing songs
and performing courtship behaviour (head bowing, head swinging and walking in an impressive
manner). Once a female has found her mate they will stand facing each other and lift their beaks up
together towards the

Animal Adaptations On African Penguins : African Penguins
Animal Adaptations Paper: African Penguins
African Penguins, (spheniscus demersus) are a species of penguins confined in cold currents along
South African waters. African penguins stay in a warm environment. They are the only penguins
found on the south–western coast of Africa; they live in colonies on twenty–four islands between
Namibia and Algoa Bay and they are the only species of penguins that grow in Africa (Aquarium of
The Pacific). They fly through the water and move their feet as rudders; the use their wings as
flippers. when swimming at the surface. African penguins can swim an average of 7 km per hour
and speeds up to 24 km per hour. They may hold their breath on a dive for an average of 2.5 minutes
(Portfolio). They enjoy eating anchovies and other small fishes such as sardines. They may also eat
squid and crustaceans. When African penguins find their mate they stay with that mate forever
(Monterey Aquarium). They are friendly social birds that groom one another in attempts of
removing any parasites. Lastly, they make donkey–like braying sounds to communicate with one
another (Smith).
African penguins are endangered species since 1956, when industrial fishing began to take place
around the cape. In the last 4 years their kind has plummeted, and since then were labeled as
"endangered." African penguins today are estimated to be 21,000 breeding pairs, before, in 1056 it
was estimated as 141,000 breeding pairs (Africa Siyabona). They are also the only penguin

Differences In Blue Penguin By Dr. Seuss And Blue Penguins
Discrimination has been present in society since ancient times. Discrimination is the theme of the
books, "The Sneetches and Other Stories" by Dr. Seuss and "Blue Penguin" by Petr Horáček. These
two books with a difference of more than fifty years show us, as some of its characters, Blue
Penguin from the book "Blue penguin", and a group of plain–belly Sneetches from the book "The
Sneetches and Other Stories" are similarly discriminated, but they face the situation differently. Blue
penguin accepts himself and the plain–belly Sneetches, unlike the blue penguin, try to be like the
star–belly Sneetches.
The story of the Sneetches and the story of the Blue penguin are both charming. One was written in
1961 and the other in 2015. Both stories with their wonderful characters teach us about the influence
of discrimination. The sneetches made a mistake trying to change their appearances to fit in the
society in which they lived but in the end, both stories showed that it is never too late to change and
begin to accept others and more important to accept ourselves. On the other hand, there is the story
of the blue penguin who was a strong penguin but he was constantly discriminated by the other
penguins to the point of wanting to leave the South Pole. Blue Penguin never wanted to change its
appearance or its way of being, unlike the sneetches he always accepted himself. as a result, the
other penguins had to accept him the way he was.
In the book "Blue penguin", Petr Horáček

The Emperor Penguin And The Great
The Emperor penguin and the Great norther diver they are both are from the class Aves (Magnuson,
2007) .In addition, the emperor penguin since is in the class Aves, the penguins used to be able to
flight which is an adaptive trait. But, since they are bigger, heavier, and better at swimming the trait
was lost over time (Elliott et. al, 2013).In addition, physiologically the common loon looks different
very different from the Emperor penguin looks bigger and can't fly. In the other hand the common
loon is small, is able to fly, swim, but can't walk (Mager et. al, 2017). Both, species have evolve to
either loss or gain traits over time to adapt to their environment. Both species are in the same class
but, have different niche in the environment. The emperor penguin can be found in the open ice of
Antarctica and they are considered sea–ice obligate species (Fretwell et. al,2014).Emperor penguin,
has an advantage in their environment since there are no predators and completion for the resources
they eat. Moreover, their body temperature surfaces cool beneath the air temperature since they life
in a cold environment (McCafferty et al,2013).In addition, the environment in which Emperor
penguin live on is harsh, but they are the only vertebrate species that breed during the Antarctic
winter and the reason are not yet known ( Zitterbart et. al,2014).As a result, the climate change in

What an emperor penguin looks like.
A white stomach, black head fur and tail. With an orange, yellow streaks on its face. what is this
majestic creature? Well I'll tell you. Its none other than an emperor penguin. The emperor penguin is
by far the largest of all penguins. There average height can be anywhere from2 to 4 feet tall. Their
weight can reach upwards to 66 pounds. They are also hard to spot between what is a male and
female because there is no easily visible difference between both. As a child, tough they seem
almost like differ type of penguin than their elders with gray fur all over and a black head they have
very few physical appearances that are alike. The average penguin lives to be anywhere from 20 –22
years old.
What do they eat? Emperor Penguins are carnivores which means they eat only meat so their diet
consists of manly fish squid and krill. Even though people think penguins and emperor penguins are
small creatures. they appetite is nowhere near small. They can eat upwards two 11 pounds of food a
day. Except during breeding seasons, they eat as much as 13 pounds to build their body weight. to
catch their food, they must drive into the freezing ocean. There is so much ice though that to get to
open ocean they could have to swim upwards to 50 miles till they finally found it.

Happy Feet And Kung Fu Panda
Different from the outside, but same in the inside
Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda are two good movies that have different themes. The two movies
have different plots at first glance, but later on show resemblances when analyzed more closely. The
two protagonist in Happy Feet (Mumble) and Kung Fu Panda (Po) both start off unfitting and
strange, later on being rejected by their peers and community. They want to become accepted by
others, but struggle to redeem themselves. Happy Feet and Kung Fu Panda are different, because
one is about a penguin that can 't sing and the other is about a Panda that wants to learn Kung Fu
and is unfit, but both show many similarities.

They are made fun of and make everyone uncomfortable. They're dads have different points of view
about them and already could see their futures.
Then in Happy Feet, Mumble grew older and the penguins don't hang out with him, because of his
weird tap dancing. He's trying to fit in and make friends, so he goes to a party. Mumble then ruins
the celebration with his awful singing, and leaves the group. Mumble was too different and
disapproved by the other penguins, because of his strange tap dancing and unable to sing. Mumble is
then casted away from the penguin community. His Father approves and think it's the best decision.
He then leaves on a floating iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. On Kung Fu Panda, Po was thought to be
accidently chosen of being the Dragon Warrior. His idols were his new peers, but they were
displeased with the decision. His Master and his peers disapprove him and think he unqualified of
being the Dragon Warrior, especially for being obese and think he got in by accident, and refuse to
acknowledge him. He is being made fun of, for being fat and clumsy. His Master and his peers try to
remove Po. Po's dad says Kung Fu isn't for everyone and told him to work back with him, in the

Do you know how many penguins died in the past 10 year from oil spills ? 2.5 million penguins
have died from oil spills in the last 10 years.¨ the sea bird chronicle¨ and ¨the amazing penguin
rescue have many similarities and differences such as conflict and how the setting creates a mood.
One similarity between .¨ the sea bird chronicle¨ and ¨the amazing penguin rescue´´ is the conflict.
Both stories conflict is character vs nature because in the amazing penguin rescue a boat spills oil in
the ocean and almost killed all of the penguins. An example is ´´ as you come to the surface for air ,
the water feels unfamiliar it is to thick and it burns your eyes.´´(16 tarshis) This quote is significant
because the penguins can't swim when theres and oil spill because their feathers are to heavy.
Similarities in ´´the amazing penguin rescue´´ they had a character vs nature conflict. An example is
that the volunteers put sweaters on all of the penguins to keep them warm until they could get all of
the oil off the birds. This quote is significant because there is fear that if too much oil spills they

In ´´the seabird chronicle´´ they knitted sweater for the penguins and it creates a mood of happiness.
An example is the volunteers got busy with their knitting needles and within days the first penguins
at phillip island were outfitted in their new wool sweaters. This confirms the happiness because the
volunteers spent their time knitting sweater for the penguins . In contrast ´´the amazing penguin

Why Do Penguins Suffer From Climate Change
Introduction
Penguins Are Suffering from Climate Change. Most people in the world can see, agree, and
understand that we have global warming and climate change issues that affect both plant and animal
around the world. We just need to come together on what needs to be done about global warming
and climate change and get it done to save ourselves, animals and the environment that depend on us
to do something. The biggest problems have been trying to get an agreement on what needs to be
done. A lot of people feel it's not their problem, important enough or its nothing we can do about it
now. In the meantime, there are animals, including penguins, plants and other animals dying out
while we are trying to figure it out. For a lot of people the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Emperor Penguin: A Different Type of Bird
Emperor Penguin ( Aptenodytes forsteri )
Have you ever heard of a flightless bird that swims, or a bird in which the male warms the egg? If
you have your talking about the Emperor Penguin that lives in Antarctica( Southern Hemisphere
).The Emperor Penguin has a cool appearance and an interesting diet. The Emperor Penguin has a
funny way to travel and to reproduce. We will see the uses of the Emperor Penguins. Now lets get
started.
The appearance of the Emperor Penguin is really tall for a penguin. The average adult height of the
Emperor Penguin is forty–five inches tall . The average adult weight of the Emperor Penguin is
about eighty–eight pounds. All adult Emperor Penguins have a dark backside. The dark backside has
a camouflage from above to be hidden from predators. The Emperor Penguin has a light almost
white shade on their surface to be hidden from below. The legs and webbed feet set back helps the
Emperor Penguin keep their posture on land. The Emperor Penguin has a silk like surface to slide on
ice and snow to get to their destination or to the food source.
The life cycle of the Emperor Penguin begins in January–March the younglings feed. In April the
younglings have a sixty to one–hundred mile march to rookery. In May the Penguins begin to mate,
the egg will hatch within forty–five to fifty days. In June to July the male Emperor Penguins
incubate the eggs from the mother. In August the eggs begin to hatch. In September to October they

Summary Of ' September Of The Penguins '
March of the Penguins is a documentary that provides its viewers with an inside look at a penguins
life. It shows us their mating cycle, the challenges they face and how they work together as
community. After watching this film I believe that I have learned new information about penguins
that I did not know before. Penguins are a great example to look at when trying to understand the
way that communities work. Through this film I was able to learn that for penguins working
together is crucial for their survival. After watching March of the Penguins I believe that humans
interact with one another is similar to way which penguins act as a community. Like penguins, we
rely on each other for safety, guidance, comfort, etc. Throughout March of the Penguins you are able
to see many examples of how penguins cooperation with one another. The first example of this is
seen when the male penguins begin their seventy mile journey to the mating ground. During this
time the penguins use each other's judgment to find their way. Another example of cooperation
within penguin communities is that the penguins will huddle together for warmth during the coldest
winter months. During these huddles the penguins constantly switch places in order to give each a
chance closer to the center of the huddle. You are also able to see cooperation throughout the entire
mating process. The pair will take turns caring and providing for their baby during this time. Once

Sociocultural Psychology In The Movie : Batman Returns
Batman Returns is a movie based on the fight between the penguin and batman on taking over the
city with interference by the cat woman. The penguin is messed up from his childhood of nobody
wanting him or making fun of him because he looked like a penguin. So, he moved down in to an
artic theme park to raise an army of clowns and penguins to eventually try and take over the city.
Also, a new mayor election was being held so he plotted one of his clowns to steal the mayors kid
and then save him to get in with the new mayor and act like the hero of the city. All along batman
knew what his plan was but kept getting stopped by cat woman. She and batman were in love during
the day and enemies at night without even knowing it. Then batman eventually stops the penguins
from blowing up the city with missiles strapped to their backs and kills the penguin. The penguin
displays so many types of psychological awareness, they are: unconscious awareness, sociocultural
psychology, cognitive psychology, and sociocultural belief.
The penguin's behavior starts bad from his young years as a child. There is a scene in the movie
where the penguin decides to eat a cat and he isn't punished for it which could lead him to think that
harming people animals or anything at all is okay in the eyes of all humans. Also, something that
really messed the penguin up and doomed him from the beginning is being dumped into a river

In March of the Penguins, the author explains in a subjective point of view that it's not the fault of
another animal for needing to feed by eating the penguins. For the Penguins, they survive many
harsh winters and attacks from animals such as the Sea Lion, because of this show of strength in one
of the world's harshest of environments, the Author admires these Penguins and how they live. Ways
they show their loyalty to their home and ways they survive this hellish place are simple, yet
extremely hazardous tasks. To get back to their mating area, the first group of penguins, the males,
must travel an extremely long distance to make it back to their home and meet up with the female

During the nighttime storms, they huddle closely together to keep warm and switch from inside to
outside so each penguin gets to feel warmth that is at the center. After all of these storms, the
females are on the return from the water. Some eggs may have been lost in the storm so the mothers
of those chicks will not have a child to feed. For those who have survived, their child is awaiting
food from the mother. After feeding the child, they pass it back to the mother as the father is in need
of food. Before departing, the Father and Child sing to each other to remember who is who after the
father returns from feeding. As time passes, these chicks slowly grow older and get much larger,
eventually losing their baby feathers. During most of their growing up stage, they are left alone as
they are old enough to look out for themselves and that of their fellow penguins. After they are old

A penguin is a bird that is typically found in Antartica that is flightless but can swim fast in arctic
waters. Humans are fascinated with the flightless bird with dense flippers because we think they
mate for life which is a goal most humans strive to accomplish in their lifetimes. However, it is not
plausible that penguins mate for life because the majority of the animals in the animal kingdom,
including humans, do not mate for life so why should they? It is not plausible that penguins mate for
life because of different factors like: monogamy versus life mates, 95 percent of animals do not mate
for life and each penguin species have differences in breeding seasons. Penguins, like most birds,
are monogamous within the duration of breeding season (Leu). Monogamy is defined as the practice
of being married, or in this case, having one mate at a time. There are two different versions of
monogamy; there is sexual monogamy and social monogamy . Sexual monogamy is the practice of
breeding with one mate at a time (Than). Social monogamy is when animals form pairs and to mate
and raise their offspring but still have affairs. Penguins are monogamous during the breeding season
once they choose aa partner unless they are unable to successfully produce offspring (Than). Most

Argumentative Essay About Penguins
Magnificent creatures of the land and sea, penguins have been around for a long time. Penguins
have adapted well over the course of many years, for swimming and hunting purposes. Everyone
knows that penguins are weird birds that can't fly and have to waddle on land, but what most people
don't know about are the harms that penguins have been exposed to and the fact that many penguins
are endangered, if not vulnerable to endangerment. Penguins are incredibly different from other
animals and are very important to the food chain, so they should be saved from endangerment.
Penguins indeed have adapted a great deal as time passed. According to recent research on old
fossils found in Peru, ancient penguins used to be six feet tall. They could swim and ... Show more

It seems unusual that birds can't fly, but it's brilliant that they can practically "fly underwater"! The
World Book (2008 ed.) states that penguins use the same motion to swim as other birds use to fly.
These flipper–y fowls can zoom through the water at a rate of eight miles an hour, but if they really
must, they can swim above twenty miles for the same amount of time! Penguins take breaths every
minute so they soar by the surface and pounce into the air on occasion, although they can hold their
breath for almost twenty minutes as they dive deep below into the water. Penguins can plunge as
deep as 900 feet. That's 300 times their average height! They are not only so fabulous underwater;
penguins can toboggan across the snow on their bellies or climb over rocks if they need to!
Rockhopper penguins, as one might assume, are named after their ability to hop over rocks easier
than most other penguins. Rockhoppers are also able to pencil dive (feet–first) into the water, unlike
most other penguins, and can leap back into the air as high as three times their height and grab onto
perches above them with their tiny

that live there have adapted not only to survive the subzero temperatures, but have also adapted to
successfully reproduce and have healthy offspring. Two fascinating Antarctic species are the
emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) and the adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae). These two
species, although almost neighbors, have developed different mating rituals and methods of egg

These penguins reach their mating sites around October to November (Robinsson et.al, 2010). Their
mating sites can not be on ice, instead they locate areas on the antarctic edge where there is fast
melting ice. If not then they try their best to locate solid land. Once they reach the breeding grounds
the males begin to court the adelie females. The primary way for the male adelie penguins to court
female penguins is to make a nest. Unlike other birds, these nests are not made out of sticks and
twigs, instead the adelie penguins make their nests out of stones and pebbles. The male adelie
penguin that manages to gather the most stones and ultimately build the largest nest will be seen as
the most desirable mate for that season (Robinsson et.al, 2010). Due to the fact that the mating
season for the adelie penguins lasts such a short time, the younger penguins often commit sexual
deviancy in the breeding grounds due to their sexual inexperience. Often times, the young adelie
penguin does not know how to behave when breeding, frequently misinterpreting signs and signals
that signify as a consent to mate. Examples of sexual deviancy that is found amongst the young
adelie penguins include but is not limited to: necromantic sex, homosexual sex, and rape of other

There are many types of penguins in the world, but here I am talking about the unique and lovely
Emperor Penguin. There are many types of penguins, but only one type inhabit the ice of Antarctica
during the winter. The wind gets as cold as –76 degree Fahrenheit, and blizzards can be as strong as
one hundred and twenty four miles per hour. Even with all these harsh weather conditions Emperor
Penguins spend their whole life in the cold ice of Antarctica. The ocean around Antarctica is covered
on ice for at least half of the year. The winters in Antarctica is when the sun disappears, and the
temperatures drop. In the spring is when the ice melts. It only receives about six inches or less of
snow a year. Even though it seems extremely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To survive the fast winds the penguins will huddle in groups. They will then take turns of who will
be in the middle and outside of the group. A third of young penguins will survive until their first
birthday because they become prey of giant petrels and skuas. The killer whale and leopard seal will
eat both old and young penguins. They are both predator and prey and as predator they eat: krill,
squid, and fish. Even though Emperor Penguins aren't close to being extinct, they face some threat
from human living. When temperatures rise from global warming the ice will start melting. This will
reduce the penguin breeding grounds. Also when fishermen go fishing near their feeding grounds, it
reduces their food source. When we don't recycle some plastics float in the water, and to the penguin
it could look like food. So when they try to eat it they will choke on the plastic will get stuck on
them and they could suffocate. To help with their struggles we can reduce the carbon emissions
which causes global morning. We can also start recycling and cut the soda can plastics so the
penguins won't choke. The emperor penguins kingdom is: Animalia, its phylum is: Chordata, its

Emperor penguins are known to be the largest of all penguins, an average bird stands 45 inches tall.
The emperor penguins are slow and dignified, it's a beautiful bird with a blue grey back that shades
into a black tail, and a characteristically white belly flushed with yellow. Penguins interact with
humans in a interesting but different way. The Emperor penguins are near the top of the Southern
Ocean's food chain. Their varied menu changes with the season, some prey items are more
important than others. An adult emperor penguin eats 2–3 kilograms each day. When they need to be
fatten up before or at the start of the breeding season, they can eat as much as 6 kilograms per day.

These type of penguins don't have any symbiotic relationships with any organisms since they are the
largest of all penguins and live in the coldest climate on earth. When resources become limited,
organisms must compete for those organisms. Intra–specific competition occurs between emperor
penguin species, when they compete for nesting areas. This event gets intense because members of
the same species share the same resources.
Emperor Penguins are basically endangered species because the majority of colonies will have lost
half of their populations by the end of the century. Every few minutes, emperor penguins leap out of
the water when they are seeking for food. They are preyed on by seals and other animals, where they
become vulnerable when entering and exiting water at the beginning and end of breeding seasons.
The Emperor penguins mainly feed on fish, squid and krill. They search for their meals in the open
sea or in the gaps in the sea ice. Like other penguins, they are expert swimmers, usually spending
two and half to nine minutes underwater while diving to depths of more than 400

Emperor Penguins: What Is A Huddle?
Emperor penguins that live in the Antarctic winter, need to survive, and ensure reproduction
occurring in the winter. In order to achieve survival, emperors form huddles together. A huddle is a
dynamic mosaic of compact zones (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 91). Huddles are very
complex and can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand birds at a time, in which
individuals are closely packed together. Huddling is a huge warming mechanism, and they are
shaped like an ellipse. An emperor penguin being close to another individual does not mean it is
automatically in a huddle. There are certain requirements that deem an individual in a huddle. An
emperor's back has to be completely covered by another individual and the light ... Show more

There is a leeward side and exposed side. Most penguins don't leave the leeward side more often
than the exposed, even though it is expected for them to leave the exposed side the more often. It
doesn't matter which side they are on because all the sides of the huddle face the same climatic
conditions. Emperors follow behind other individuals when joining a huddle. This is why it doesn't
matter what side the penguins pick. Emperor penguins join huddles to absorb heat. When they get
too hot they need to release heat. So emperor penguin huddles need to break up at some points to
dissipate heat. Once a penguins body temperature reaches 37.5o C, they tend to leave the huddle
(Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 96). According to André Ancel, the breaking up of
huddles is accompanied by a haze of warm air rising over the colony, which signifies heat
dissipation. When huddles break up the temperature decreases and the light intensity

The Last March of the Emperor Penguins?
Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able
to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to –76°F. Even though
these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality
rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the
seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the
area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a
region as "ice–covered" or "not ice–covered." During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical
warm period with reduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed
far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the
entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea
ice cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel,
which will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud & Weimerskirch,
2001, p. 185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by "topdown processes".
Diminished sea ice could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential
predators, such as killer whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no
emperor penguin remains found in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so
much energy (especially males after their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which
could result in a lower survival rate. This predicament is mainly caused by the change of variables
called "sea ice concentration" and "sea ice

The Emperor Penguin lives in Antarctica on the Antarctic ice surrounded by very cold water. They

are also considered the most beautiful of all penguins that live right now. The Emperor Penguin has
big heads, thick necks, wedged shaped tail, and tiny flipper–like wings. They feed on fish, squid,
krill, and cephalopods where they catch it by diving into the ocean up to 700 feet. They remain
under the water for about 18 minutes while finding food. Both male and female penguins look very

Most of the penguins form new pair bonds each year, which means that they mate with another
penguin each breeding season. There is a study that says only about 14.6% pair of penguins stay
with the same mate each year. The male penguin arrives to their nest before the female penguin
does. Since there are more female penguins than male penguins, there will be major competitions to
get a female. To attract females, the male penguin will stand still, put their head on their chest,
inhales, and give out a courtship call. They keep this position for a few seconds before moving to
another position. To nest, both penguins travel to a colonial nesting area at around March or early
April and lay a single egg in May or early June. The single egg weighs about 460 or 467g. Once
they lay an egg, the male penguin is in charge of incubating the egg while the female penguins go
back to an area to obtain food. The job of the male penguin is to keep the egg protected from any
danger and they also have to keep the egg between their legs so that it can be warm. If the egg is
exposed to the cold, the egg and baby penguin will die rapidly due to the severe temperature of the
Antarctic. It takes about 64 days for the egg to hatch and the age of the fledging is about 150 days.

This is because the female Emperor desires a partner who is able to survive throughout the
unfavourable environment during the long fasting period whilst incubating the egg produced by the
female. Once the female lays her egg, both parents alternate between incubating and protecting the
eggs as well as caring for the chicks once they're hatched while the female hunts for food. So, while
the female returns to sea in order to forage food, the male is left to fend for him and his egg and
consequently chicks, this can last for approximately 2 months and the male penguins can potentially
lose up to 45% (potentially 20 kilograms) of their overall body fat over the breeding season.
Therefore, it is incredibly important for a female to find a fat partner, as the larger the partner, the
longer he will be able to fast while she forages for food, and protect their eggs and consequently
their chicks. To emphasize and flaunt their size, the male Emperor penguins produce a call of sorts
in order to attract a suitable female, whilst performing and waving their flippers/wings around in
order to draw attention to themselves. Dependant on the density of the male's layer of fat
surrounding its voice box and consequently the overall size of the male's chest cavity, the tone of the
call produced will either be suitable or unsuitable decided on said

as well as behavioral traits. In order to try to determine what makes each of these species different,
scientist in the field have turned to studying vocal repertoires of each penguin that is a part of the
Spheniscus family. It has been concluded that although the Spheniscus demersus, commonly named

Different types of calls are made possible by an organ in the penguin's throat called the syrinx. Each
species syrinx differs slightly allowing different calls to be made. A study was conducted by Nina
Thumser and Millicent Ficken that proved each species calls differ in the number of syllables,
length, and frequency. This is why a recommended method used to classify the behavior of penguins
is to understand and identify vocalizations. The African penguin had the greatest maximum
frequency of the longest syllable when comparing it to the braying in Humboldt and Magellanic
penguins. In addition, during mating seasons both sexes of African penguins will contribute their
own bray call, however, in species such as the Spheniscus mendiculus commonly known as the
Galapagos penguin, it's mainly the males who bray when breeding. The African penguin also brays
more frequently because they are more likely to display aggression via braying. because in a study,
also done by Nina Thumser and Millicent Ficken, it was discovered that African Penguins are more
aggressive towards each other than other Spheniscus penguins were towards other members.
The African black–footed penguin is unique, as in comparison to its Spheniscus family relatives due
to its extensive use of the braying call. These uses developed as a result of behaviors and the
lifestyle seen in the African penguin that are not as clearly seen in its Galapagos, Magellanic, and
Humboldt relatives. The harsh, loud, sharp, and intense sound of the bray has developed to benefit
the penguin. Without it the species would not be successful in reproduction, establishing territory, or

need help. "The amazing penguin rescue" and "saving penguins, one sweater at a time" have many
similarities and differences such as the conflict and the mood.
One similarity between "the amazing penguin rescue" and "saving penguins, one sweater at a time"
is the conflict, how the oil spilled. Both stories have the same problem with the oil spilling. In the
"amazing penguin rescue" the oil spilled in the world's largest African penguin ground. An example
is, "It is too thick; it burns your eyes" [tarshis 16]. Another example is,"you try to swim but
suddenly your wings are too heavy to lift" [tarshis 16]. These two sentences are significant because
if the penguins get in the water they will get hurt. And if they can't get in water then they will have
no food and will most likely die. Similarly in "saving penguins, one sweater at a time" the penguins
in Phillip Island are dealing with an oil spill. An example is, "In the process they were swallowing
the toxic oil which would slowly kill them" [lewis 19]. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "the amazing penguin rescue" the setting is at South Atlantic ocean. An example is, "Imagine if
you are an African penguin living on a cold island in the Atlantic Ocean" [tarshis 16]. This is
significant because they live in a cold and an island by the ocean. In contrast in "saving penguins
one sweater at a time" the setting is in a different place. An example is, "It was 1988, and the rescue
workers at Phillip Island Nature Park in Australia" [lewis 19]. This quote is significant because they
live in that area and people are trying to help them. In summary "the amazing penguin rescue" and
"saving penguins one sweater at a time" have two different

Emperor Penguin Cycle

  • 1. Emperor Penguin Cycle Emperor Penguin Introduction: The Emperor Penguin, also scientifically known as Aptenodytes forsteri, is the tallest and heaviest of all penguin species. The Emperor Penguin is native to Antarctica and is near threatened with a stable population. If living in the wild, it generally has a lifespan of around 20 years, but an individual can reach 50 years of age. The Emperor penguin reproduces sexually, meaning two parents are required during the reproduction process. Emperor penguins reach sexual maturity at the age of 3. Reproductive parts: Unlike humans and many other animals, female Emperor Penguins do not have a vagina and the males do not have a penis. The main male reproductive parts are the testis, ureter, vas deferens and cloaca. The testis grow in size during mating season to produce more sperm. The sperm then travels through the ureter and a tube called the vas deferens. This then leads to the cloaca where the sperm is stored. The cloaca is also an opening of the digestive, reproductive and urinary tract. The main female reproductive parts include the ovaries, where the eggs are produced, the oviduct which is where the egg travels through, a uterus, ureter and a cloaca which leads to the ovaries. Mating: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Penguins travel 70 miles to reach a specific destination made for mating purposes. They choose one mate and "marry" their mate for the entire season. If they already had a mate the year before they may stay with the same mate. Emperor penguins find a mate by wandering around, singing songs and performing courtship behaviour (head bowing, head swinging and walking in an impressive manner). Once a female has found her mate they will stand facing each other and lift their beaks up together towards the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Animal Adaptations On African Penguins : African Penguins Animal Adaptations Paper: African Penguins African Penguins, (spheniscus demersus) are a species of penguins confined in cold currents along South African waters. African penguins stay in a warm environment. They are the only penguins found on the south–western coast of Africa; they live in colonies on twenty–four islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay and they are the only species of penguins that grow in Africa (Aquarium of The Pacific). They fly through the water and move their feet as rudders; the use their wings as flippers. when swimming at the surface. African penguins can swim an average of 7 km per hour and speeds up to 24 km per hour. They may hold their breath on a dive for an average of 2.5 minutes (Portfolio). They enjoy eating anchovies and other small fishes such as sardines. They may also eat squid and crustaceans. When African penguins find their mate they stay with that mate forever (Monterey Aquarium). They are friendly social birds that groom one another in attempts of removing any parasites. Lastly, they make donkey–like braying sounds to communicate with one another (Smith). African penguins are endangered species since 1956, when industrial fishing began to take place around the cape. In the last 4 years their kind has plummeted, and since then were labeled as "endangered." African penguins today are estimated to be 21,000 breeding pairs, before, in 1056 it was estimated as 141,000 breeding pairs (Africa Siyabona). They are also the only penguin ... • 5. Differences In Blue Penguin By Dr. Seuss And Blue Penguins Discrimination has been present in society since ancient times. Discrimination is the theme of the books, "The Sneetches and Other Stories" by Dr. Seuss and "Blue Penguin" by Petr Horáček. These two books with a difference of more than fifty years show us, as some of its characters, Blue Penguin from the book "Blue penguin", and a group of plain–belly Sneetches from the book "The Sneetches and Other Stories" are similarly discriminated, but they face the situation differently. Blue penguin accepts himself and the plain–belly Sneetches, unlike the blue penguin, try to be like the star–belly Sneetches. The story of the Sneetches and the story of the Blue penguin are both charming. One was written in 1961 and the other in 2015. Both stories with their wonderful characters teach us about the influence of discrimination. The sneetches made a mistake trying to change their appearances to fit in the society in which they lived but in the end, both stories showed that it is never too late to change and begin to accept others and more important to accept ourselves. On the other hand, there is the story of the blue penguin who was a strong penguin but he was constantly discriminated by the other penguins to the point of wanting to leave the South Pole. Blue Penguin never wanted to change its appearance or its way of being, unlike the sneetches he always accepted himself. as a result, the other penguins had to accept him the way he was. It shows us their mating cycle, the challenges they face and how they work together as community. After watching this film I believe that I have learned new information about penguins that I did not know before. Penguins are a great example to look at when trying to understand the way that communities work. Through this film I was able to learn that for penguins working together is crucial for their survival. After watching March of the Penguins I believe that humans interact with one another is similar to way which penguins act as a community. Like penguins, we rely on each other for safety, guidance, comfort, etc. Throughout March of the Penguins you are able to see many examples of how penguins cooperation with one another. The first example of this is seen when the male penguins begin their seventy mile journey to the mating ground. During this time the penguins use each other's judgment to find their way. Another example of cooperation within penguin communities is that the penguins will huddle together for warmth during the coldest winter months. During these huddles the penguins constantly switch places in order to give each a chance closer to the center of the huddle. You are also able to see cooperation throughout the entire mating process. The pair will take turns caring and providing for their baby during this time. Once the egg has arrived, the female ... • 36. Penguins Research Paper A penguin is a bird that is typically found in Antartica that is flightless but can swim fast in arctic waters. Humans are fascinated with the flightless bird with dense flippers because we think they mate for life which is a goal most humans strive to accomplish in their lifetimes. However, it is not plausible that penguins mate for life because the majority of the animals in the animal kingdom, including humans, do not mate for life so why should they? It is not plausible that penguins mate for life because of different factors like: monogamy versus life mates, 95 percent of animals do not mate for life and each penguin species have differences in breeding seasons. Penguins, like most birds, are monogamous within the duration of breeding season (Leu). Monogamy is defined as the practice of being married, or in this case, having one mate at a time. There are two different versions of monogamy; there is sexual monogamy and social monogamy . Sexual monogamy is the practice of breeding with one mate at a time (Than). Social monogamy is when animals form pairs and to mate and raise their offspring but still have affairs. Penguins have adapted well over the course of many years, for swimming and hunting purposes. Everyone knows that penguins are weird birds that can't fly and have to waddle on land, but what most people don't know about are the harms that penguins have been exposed to and the fact that many penguins are endangered, if not vulnerable to endangerment. Penguins are incredibly different from other animals and are very important to the food chain, so they should be saved from endangerment. Penguins indeed have adapted a great deal as time passed. It seems unusual that birds can't fly, but it's brilliant that they can practically "fly underwater"! The World Book (2008 ed.) states that penguins use the same motion to swim as other birds use to fly. These flipper–y fowls can zoom through the water at a rate of eight miles an hour, but if they really must, they can swim above twenty miles for the same amount of time! Penguins take breaths every minute so they soar by the surface and pounce into the air on occasion, although they can hold their breath for almost twenty minutes as they dive deep below into the water. Penguins can plunge as deep as 900 feet. That's 300 times their average height! They are not only so fabulous underwater; penguins can toboggan across the snow on their bellies or climb over rocks if they need to! Rockhopper penguins, as one might assume, are named after their ability to hop over rocks easier than most other penguins. Rockhoppers are also able to pencil dive (feet–first) into the water, unlike most other penguins, and can leap back into the air as high as three times their height and grab onto perches above them with their tiny ... These penguins reach their mating sites around October to November (Robinsson et.al, 2010). Their mating sites can not be on ice, instead they locate areas on the antarctic edge where there is fast melting ice. If not then they try their best to locate solid land. Once they reach the breeding grounds the males begin to court the adelie females. The primary way for the male adelie penguins to court female penguins is to make a nest. Unlike other birds, these nests are not made out of sticks and twigs, instead the adelie penguins make their nests out of stones and pebbles. The male adelie penguin that manages to gather the most stones and ultimately build the largest nest will be seen as the most desirable mate for that season (Robinsson et.al, 2010). Due to the fact that the mating season for the adelie penguins lasts such a short time, the younger penguins often commit sexual deviancy in the breeding grounds due to their sexual inexperience. Often times, the young adelie penguin does not know how to behave when breeding, frequently misinterpreting signs and signals that signify as a consent to mate. Examples of sexual deviancy that is found amongst the young adelie penguins include but is not limited to: necromantic sex, homosexual sex, and rape of other female penguins (McKie, ... In order to achieve survival, emperors form huddles together. A huddle is a dynamic mosaic of compact zones (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 91). Huddles are very complex and can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand birds at a time, in which individuals are closely packed together. Huddling is a huge warming mechanism, and they are shaped like an ellipse. An emperor penguin being close to another individual does not mean it is automatically in a huddle. This is why it doesn't matter what side the penguins pick. Emperor penguins join huddles to absorb heat. When they get too hot they need to release heat. So emperor penguin huddles need to break up at some points to dissipate heat. Once a penguins body temperature reaches 37.5o C, they tend to leave the huddle (Ancel, Gilbert, Poulind, Beaulieu, Thierry 96). Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) in the Antarctic are fascinating flightless birds that are able to withstand incredibly harsh environments, where wind chills can reach to –76°F. Even though these penguins are able to survive the freezing temperatures, their breeding success and mortality rates are based primarily on the sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice extent (SIE) throughout the seasons. Sea ice concentration is a variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators to find the area of sea ice compared to the total at a given point in the ocean, whereas sea ice extent refers to a region as "ice–covered" or "not ice–covered." During the late 1970s, there was an elongated atypical warm period with reduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sea ice is a vital breeding and nursing habitat for emperor penguins, where their colonies are formed far from the open sea. The breeding penguins, would then, go on scavenging trips throughout the entire development and chick nurturing stages. However, during the period with thick and wide sea ice cover, the trips become longer. Adult penguins would have to use up more energy for travel, which will result in lower offspring provisioning and hatching success (Barbraud & Weimerskirch, 2001, p. 185). Also, sea ice could influence the emperor penguin by "topdown processes". Diminished sea ice could allow access to hunting areas of the emperor penguin by potential predators, such as killer whales (Jenouvrier et al., (2012), p. 2759). Consequently, there are no emperor penguin remains found in killer whale diets. Nevertheless, penguins that have used up so much energy (especially males after their 4 months fast) are vulnerable to other predators, which could result in a lower survival rate. Since there are more female penguins than male penguins, there will be major competitions to get a female. To attract females, the male penguin will stand still, put their head on their chest, inhales, and give out a courtship call. • 58. Research Paper On Emperor Penguins In relation to their swimming adaptations, Emperor penguins also need to be able to dive to great depths in order to retrieve vital resources such as food. Emperor penguins tend to hunt for quick, midwater squid as well as fish and therefore they need to be capable of diving to relatively deeper and remain submerged for longer period of time, in relation to other penguin species. Emperor penguins can dive to depths of approximately 550–565 metres towards the sea floor which is known as the "twilight zone" where less light is able to penetrate the surface of the water. Emperor penguins are also able to hold their breath for approximately 22–27 minutes. Both of these aspects enable the emperor penguin to stay submerged in the water and locate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because the female Emperor desires a partner who is able to survive throughout the unfavourable environment during the long fasting period whilst incubating the egg produced by the female. Once the female lays her egg, both parents alternate between incubating and protecting the eggs as well as caring for the chicks once they're hatched while the female hunts for food. So, while the female returns to sea in order to forage food, the male is left to fend for him and his egg and consequently chicks, this can last for approximately 2 months and the male penguins can potentially lose up to 45% (potentially 20 kilograms) of their overall body fat over the breeding season. Therefore, it is incredibly important for a female to find a fat partner, as the larger the partner, the longer he will be able to fast while she forages for food, and protect their eggs and consequently their chicks. To emphasize and flaunt their size, the male Emperor penguins produce a call of sorts in order to attract a suitable female, whilst performing and waving their flippers/wings around in order to draw attention to themselves. Dependant on the density of the male's layer of fat surrounding its voice box and consequently the overall size of the male's chest cavity, the tone of the call produced will either be suitable or unsuitable decided on said ... • 60. Emperor Penguin Research Paper The scientific name of an emperor penguin is known as aptenodytes forsteri. An emperor penguin is about 3.6 feet to 4.3 feet tall, they are the tallest penguins out of their whole species. They can weigh up to 77 pounds or more. These penguins have a black back and head and a white belly. Emperor penguins tend to have a long body, short neck, and a big head. Their wings which aren't actually for flying, but for a quicker speed when swimming in the cold waters, give them outstanding swimming abilities. These penguins mostly breed in the antarctic winter which would be june all the way through august, when the air temperature drops to –60° c. The penguins both lay an egg each, in case one of the baby penguins don't make it through. These interesting penguins live in the cold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It fascinates me how they can swim underwater for a large amount of time and they can manage to carry on besides the extremely cold weather. I thought it was very interesting that emperor penguins are the only penguins to stay in the cold ice of antarctica, in fact they live their whole lives there, others leave not being able to handle the harsh weather. These penguins had to adapt to the bitter conditions of living on the cold ice of Antarctica, this made them the most sturdiest to handle the cold weather and have amazing swimming abilities. Humans are affecting penguins in bad ways mostly due to global warming, oil pollution, and human activities like overfishing. The positive effects from humans is they do save penguins from oil poisoning and other penguins who could be dying. A positive way to help keep penguins away from extinction is prevent oil pollution, stop overfishing, and stop all illegal stealing of penguin eggs. We must also find away to prevent global warming from getting rid of all our dear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Adelie Penguin Bird Research Paper Today, I chose to write about the Adelie Penguin, and my knowledge of this bird consists of penguins that (appear to) wear tuxedos, plus comparable to all penguins, Adele Penguins captivate us with intense cuteness. One physical behavior they posses (which I desire) is the belly flop. As they run along the snow and ice on their little legs and feet, they will undoubtedly fall, and this is where the belly flop comes into play. They fall with such dignity and ease, and once on their bellies they slide for a short distance in the ice, as if to say I meant to do that. I recently fell on my knee which caused a great deal of damage and pain. How wonderful if I could have fallen on my stomach and gracefully slid across the room, at which point I ... Emperor Penguin Research Paper Emperor penguins In one of the most often inhospitable environments, with 98% of the land covered in ice, winds ranging from 8 kilometres an hour to 64 kilometres an hour, fluctuating climates that potentially reach incredibly cold temperatures down to –89 degrees Celsius, continuous daylight during summer, and storms such as blizzards where winds vary up to 200 kilometres per hour, that arrive rapidly in which potentially cause incredibly contrasting weather patterns within relatively short distances, lives the Emperor Penguin. The oil spilt from ships is toxic to the penguins. If people are not fast enough penguins could lose their lives. "The Amazing Penguin Rescue" and "Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time" have many similarities and differences such as conflict and the solution to helping the penguins. One similarity between "The Amazing Penguin Race" and "Saving Penguins, One Sweater At A Time" is the conflict. In both stories people are trying to save penguins that have been harmed. People were trying to keep the penguins warm. They put tiny sweaters on the penguins because the oil was made their feathers not protect them from the cold. On the other hand, in "Amazing Penguin Rescue" people take the penguins to a facility to be cleaned and fed. For instance, " A team of scientist and volunteers have transformed a warehouse into a penguin rescue center" (Tarshis 17). People needed a place for the penguins to go after they rescued them. Black Footed Penguins Lab Report Exploring Braying in the African Black–Footed Penguin The African black–footed, Galapagos, Humboldt, and Magellanic penguins are all members of the Spheniscus family. Sharing common ancestry, these penguins share very similar morphological traits as well as behavioral traits. In order to try to determine what makes each of these species different, scientist in the field have turned to studying vocal repertoires of each penguin that is a part of the Spheniscus family. It has been concluded that although the Spheniscus demersus, commonly named the African black–footed penguin, has similarly behaving relatives in the Spheniscus family, it is only the black footed penguin that not only uses the braying vocalization for breeding, but during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Different types of calls are made possible by an organ in the penguin's throat called the syrinx. Each species syrinx differs slightly allowing different calls to be made. A study was conducted by Nina Thumser and Millicent Ficken that proved each species calls differ in the number of syllables, length, and frequency. This is why a recommended method used to classify the behavior of penguins is to understand and identify vocalizations. The African penguin had the greatest maximum frequency of the longest syllable when comparing it to the braying in Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. In addition, during mating seasons both sexes of African penguins will contribute their own bray call, however, in species such as the Spheniscus mendiculus commonly known as the Galapagos penguin, it's mainly the males who bray when breeding. The African penguin also brays more frequently because they are more likely to display aggression via braying. because in a study, also done by Nina Thumser and Millicent Ficken, it was discovered that African Penguins are more aggressive towards each other than other Spheniscus penguins were towards other members. The African black–footed penguin is unique, as in comparison to its Spheniscus family relatives due to its extensive use of the braying call. These uses developed as a result of behaviors and the lifestyle seen in the African penguin that are not as clearly seen in its Galapagos, Magellanic, and Humboldt relatives. The harsh, loud, sharp, and intense sound of the bray has developed to benefit the penguin. Without it the species would not be successful in reproduction, establishing territory, or locating other members of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Penguins are usually prefer their their habitats in those specific areas because they prefer colder and colder weather than hot weather. Penguins only prefer cold over warmer weather because in the cold penguins have to survive off of fish. From what i have read online it states that if that you're just a small penguin you might live up to about 6 years maybe 7. Penguins use their belly to reduce their body to drag in the water. You might not know this but the only reason why penguins have bird shaped wings , it's because once they dive in they can go up to 20 mph. If penguins start to keep still and not be active their body temp. Will start to decrease and they will be getting to the point where they will die eventually. As a result their wings changed over time to what we call flippers. They were no longer able to fly but they didn't need to. "The amazing penguin rescue" and "saving penguins, one sweater at a time" have many similarities and differences such as the conflict and the mood. One similarity between "the amazing penguin rescue" and "saving penguins, one sweater at a time" is the conflict, how the oil spilled. Both stories have the same problem with the oil spilling. In the "amazing penguin rescue" the oil spilled in the world's largest African penguin ground. An example is, "It is too thick; it burns your eyes" [tarshis 16]. Another example is,"you try to swim but suddenly your wings are too heavy to lift" [tarshis 16]. These two sentences are significant because if the penguins get in the water they will get hurt. And if they can't get in water then they will have no food and will most likely die. Similarly in "saving penguins, one sweater at a time" the penguins in Phillip Island are dealing with an oil spill.
