From the 1890s to the 1920s, many social and economic reform movements were taking place
within American society, and this time period became known as the Progressive Era. People
advocated for women's suffrage, temperance, rights for African Americans, better working
conditions in factories, and much more. One prominent figure from this time period is Carry A.
Nation, a temperance activist. Nation would pray, sing hymns, throw bricks, and attack bars with
hatchets. Her action resulted in her being jailed, written about, and led to her writing her own
magazine. Carry A. Nation's tactics of praying, singing hymns, and violent attacks were effective in
the banning of alcohol, with the 18th Amendment, due to the publicity and fame she received. Carry
A. Nation, originally Carrie A. Nation, did not always have a tendency for violence and a strong
aversion from alcohol. However, Nation's first husband, Charles Gloyd, had a severe drinking
problem. Nation became pregnant, and it became evident to her that Gloyd would not be able to
support her and her child. Gloyd soon died because of his drinking issue. This later led to Nation's
strong dislike from alcohol because her husband, whom she loved, died because of alcohol. Nation

Women Were Not For The Public World
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was widely believed that "women were not
suited for the public world" (p.493). It is no secret that women were treated less than a man, and that
belief proves it. Women took a stand for themselves by creating groups for women with similar
beliefs to come together and show the world that they are equal to men. The groups they established
aided the community in several different ways. Some supported local public places and others
passed laws that improved women 's and children's quality of life. Through the hard work of these
groups, many different career paths opened up to women that were originally labeled a man's job. If
it wasn't for the women who asserted their authority back then, I may not have been granted the
rights I have today to even be in this class. Originally women's employment options were limited, as
jobs were often sorted by gender. Job openings in industrial work were often filled with men. The
few women that broke the mold and worked in an industrial setting "were more likely to be laid off
or to experience wage reductions"(page 573). This seemed to be a common trend amongst other
male driven careers. Although women with an education could work their way into male driven
professions like "physicians, lawyers, engineers, scientists, and corporate managers" (page 493),
most women found security being employed in careers such as teaching, nursing and social work.

Mabel 's Strange Predicament is a 1914 American comedy film starring Charles Chaplin, famously
known for being the first time Chaplin wears the tramp costume. The movie was token place in a
hotel lobby. A drunk man, the tramp, runs into Mabel and tries to engage in a conversation. Mabel
walks away and goes on a date with her lover. Once Mabel returns, she goes to her room and plays
with her dog. While leaving her room for a quick moment, the door closes and she gets locked out in
her pajamas. The tramp comes up the stairs and finds her. He tries to grab her but she escapes. As
she tries to hide, she enters the room next to hers and hides under the bed. In the room is a man
whose wife recently left to complain to the manager about Mabel. Her lover comes and knocks on
Mabel's door to visit but gets no response; he decides to wait for her with his friend, Mabel's
neighbor. Soon he discovers Mabel under the bed and assumes that she is having an affair with the
neighbor. The wife enters the room and assumes the same as the lover. After fighting, Mabel is
kicked out and finds the tramp again. The lover fights off the tramp and realizes it was the drunken
man's fault that Mabel was hiding under the bed. Mabel and her lover reconcile while the older

After the downfall of Germany, allied countries ceased control over the region and divided it into 4

After the civil war (1861–1865) the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was founded. They did
not promote moderation or temperance but rather prohibition. Later the Prohibition party was
founded in 1867, and as the name indicates it was for prohibition. The party succeeded in getting
many communities and states to outlaw producing intoxicating beverages and their greatest success
was in 1919.
Why did it happen?
As i told the prohibition party had their greatest success in 1919, where they succeeded in passing
the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution. This Amendment actually outlawed
production, sale, transportation, import and export of alcohol. It was only legal when used for
religious purposes. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or
transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof
from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is

To Jackson he thought the main purpose of the constitution is to form a more perfect union. He was
willing to help the poor and wanted them to get what they deserve. He didn't like the idea of
nullification. In document N it quotes "I consider, then, the power to annul a law of the US, assumed
by one State, incompatible with the existence of the union, contradicted expressly by the letter of the

The most common ways women of different ethnicities were held back were by being barred from
certain jobs. Black, and Latina women were not allowed to work in the southern textile industry, or
hold a secretarial job like many white women did. Instead they were forced to become maids, and
laundresses. (Schaller 594) Another example of the lack of improvement for women in minorities is
the percentage of young Italian girls who were withdrawn from school, in order for them to help

Clark writes of all these different groups that all had an effect towards the outlawing of the saloons.
For example "in the 1880's the WCTU began a campaigning for state laws which would make
scientific temperance instruction mandatory in the public schools." Clark brings to mind many of
these groups who many did not know were political forces leading to the passage of the 18th
amendment.
With all the support of all the many different groups, the ASL felt they should step it up and abolish
all the saloons throughout the country.
Many people seem to think that prohibition was centered only in large cities such as Chicago. But
Clark demonstrates that it wasn't the case. Many states were implementing laws to abolish saloons
and even becoming dry states before the 18th amendment was passed. Clark writes of how in
Pomona CA, out of hundreds of saloons that existed only two survived. But even then they weren't

As tension in Syria and the surrounding regions intensifies, more and more refugees are fleeing to
Europe seeking asylum; however, the countries they are entering are experiencing many adverse
side effects; such as, social unrest, sexual assaults, and terrorist attacks. It is unacceptable for the
children in these nations to have to grow up in a nation they once called home and felt safe in but
now no longer has that feeling. The same argument could be made for the refugees and that is why
the current open door immigration policy that Angela Merkel has in effect must be remedied. The
goal of a refugee is to escape war that they and their families can live safely without worry of being
killed. Not to change the ways of the nation they are entering and treat the locals with disdain for
their differences in ideology, dress, culture and even diet. The host nation of a large number of
refugees should not have to change their way of life to accommodate those seeking refuge. It should
be the other way around. Assimilation is the goal, not disintegration of native culture. A policy
which allows radical Muslims to immigrate into the country and then face punishment only after the
damage from their actions has been done is grossly illogical and insufficient for the preservation of a

Women's Active Role Throughout the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, gender roles began to change
as women became active participants in American society. For instance, women became active in
expressing their views against alcohol and pushed for the prohibition and temperance. Organizations
such as The Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), argued that alcohol led to societal
problems. Male and female reformers banned together to argue that alcohol was immoral and
causing a negative impact on women. Women, if married, would experience an abusive, violent
drunk husband who neglected his family and gambled his money away. Thus, the evils of alcohol
became part of the progressive agenda that eventually led to the passage of the 18th amendment.
Along with prohibition, women also took active roles in acquiring suffrage. In "The Politics of Good

Australia's Involvement In The Vietnam War Analysis
Australia was involved in the Vietnam War during 1965 and 1972. As Australia entered the war it
generated numerous amount of support for the Australian troops to fight in the war. However,
because of this support there were many groups who opposed of Australia's involvement in the war.
The supporters of the war included, Returned and Service League (RSL), the older generation and
The Australian Democratic Party. The groups who opposed of the involvement of the war included
The Trade Unions and The Protestant church. These points will be elaborated on through out this
essay.
To begin with, a group that greatly supported Australia's involvement in the war was the Returned
and Service League (RSL) and the older generation. Reasoning for this is because they wanted to
keep in good conduct with other nations, to stop the spread of communism in Asia and Europe and
the government of South Vietnam was in need of help. But on of the key reason was that a lot of
them agreed that it was the right thing for them to go to war. The motivation behind this was that
back in their day they fought for their country in the previous wars. Hence, they believed that this

The explanation why they supported the involvement of the war was because the Australian
Democratic Party had a large Catholic membership. With that being so the party was truly anti–
communist. Moreover, It was a committed to object to any ALP policies. So because of this it
automatically supported the war. Hence why, The Australian Democratic party supported Australia's

Group Voting Behavior The two major parties in the United States political system, Democratic and
Republican, have many the differences about the policies and the political positions such as taxes,
the role of government, gun control, gay rights, immigration, etc. Those differences are influenced
by all of the American people's political ideology in society. Absolutely, every single person in the
United States have their own choices for those problems. Therefore, each party has its special
groups that support for their policies, and it also shows the people's expectation on each party. In
race and ethnicity group, most non–Hispanic whites have a tendency to vote for Republican party
while African–Americans, Latinos and Asian likely vote for the Democratic party. The reason why

woman, has opposed in gay marriage and abortion, those people who are Christian and Catholic also

People with higher income will have different expectation on government than lower income.
Obviously, lower wage earners should vote for the party that help them economically. The
Democrats favor a higher minimum wage, protection of union rights, higher tax rates for higher
income brackets and medical care for working class, which meets lower income expectation. They
support higher taxes on the rich should pay for public programs, which is most of higher income
opposing. On the other hand, Republicans want to reduce tax on the rich, limit union rights, oppose
Obamacare, against raising the minimum wage because it will hurt business (Democrats). Both

Women's Suffrage Movement
In 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote, this
made them leaders in the women's suffrage movement. This is an historical event that is of
significance to New Zealanders when the bill was passed and continues to impact New Zealanders
now. Prior to 1893 there were many issues which women faced that significantly impacted the
quality of their lives and their families, especially their children.
As a result of industrialism in New Zealand families were beginning to earn more. They were
beginning to hire servants to assist in their homes leaving women with fewer traditional household
chores that they had to complete. These included educating the children, because they were now
being sent to school, cleaning and cooking. Women were able to work and had more free time now,
this meant that they were able to discuss the issues which were present in society. Due to this many
women began to consider the idea of campaigning with this extra time for women's suffrage – the
right to vote. Women believed that in order for moral and social reform to occur in New Zealand
society and to purify New Zealand's politics it was vital for women to have the right to vote. Prior to
women receiving the right to vote there were many issues present in New Zealand. These issues
encouraged women to fight for this basic right for eight years.1
