Improvements in collapsible boxes
Description of GB780084 (A)

Improvements in Collapsible Boxes
We, MAX RUBINS, of 17, Mand Street,
Heywood Street, Manchester 8, and
JOHN HALL, of 13A, Staley Road, Mossley,
County of Lancaster, both British subjests, do hereby declare the
invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly
described in and by tile following statement:-
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible boxes or
containers.
It has been proposed to provide collapsible cardboard boxes for
stacking purposes in which the vertical edges of the box are scored to
allow adjacent sides of the box to lie substantiaily parallel for
stacking purposes to economise space and a metallic collapsible
packing case has been proposed wherein the vertical side and end wall
members are hihged together at the corners of the case, a top member
and a bottom member are hinged respectively to the upper and lower
edges of opposite vertical side wall members and outside the external
vertical planes or surfaces of said wall members in which the said top
and bottom members each have an inset body portion adapted to fit
within the vertical side and end wall members and thereby reinforce
the structure against lateral strain, and the vertical side and end
walls are hinged together at the corners of the case through the
medlum of wires, which are bent about the edges of the front and rear
wails and constitute parts of the hihges of the top and bottom
members, the vertical edges of the side members being provided with
integral alternately arranged projecting tongues, each of which is
turned around a vertical portion of said wires and bent back upon the
inher face of its respective wall member and anchored thereto.
According to the invention a box, or container of metal or other rigid
material is constructed with adjacent sides hinged together and with a
lid or cover and bottom hinged to opposite sides of the box, the
sides, lid or cover and bottom lying in substantially parallel planes
when collapsed for storage purposes, adjacent edges of the sides and
the hinged edges of the lid or cover and of the bottom and the edges
of the sides to which they are respectively attached being formed with
alternating tubular members to receive hinge pins.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying
drawings.

Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention a metal or other rigid box or container
is constructed with portions on each vertical edge of the sides 1, 2,
3 4, pressed or moulded to form a plurality of tubular members a the
tubular members a on one side alternating with those on an adjacent
side. The adjacent sides are secured together by a pin b or rod
extending ilrough the tubular members d of each side.
A flanged lid 5 or cover formed with similar tubular members a3
secured to tubular members a2 formed along one edge of the top of one
side 1 of the box or container and a flanged bottom 6 is similarly
secured to the lower edge of the opposite side 2 of the box or
container in which tubular members a3 on the lower edge of the side 2
alternate with tubular members a4 on the edge of the bottom 6.
The top 5 and bottom 6 are pressed inwards as shown in Fig. 4 to enter
between the sides 1, 2, 3, 4, when closed thereby stiffening the box
or container to prevent its collapse during use. The unhinged edges a5
of the lid 5 and bottom 6 are pressed over into inverted U shape to
engage over a tubular bead a.4i pressed out of 1he upper and lower
edges of the sides 2, 3, 4. The edges a5 opposite the hinges may be
formed with a turned over portion a7 to clip onto the bead a6.
For stacking purposes adjacent sides 1, 3 and 2, 4 are pivoted on the
pins 6 or rods to lie in contact and the lid 5 is pivoted through 180
from the vertical open position to lie parallel with the side 1. The
bottom is similarly pivoted through 270 to lie parallel with the side
2.
The boxes or containers may be stacked with the sides 1, 2, 3, 4 and
lid 5 is bottom 6 all lyihg in substantially parallel planes thereby
economising space. When erected the box or container is maintained
rigid by the bottom 6 and by the lid or cover 5 when closed.
What we claim is:
1. A collapsible box or container of metal or other rigid material
constructed with adjacent sides hinged together and with a lid or
cover and bottom hinged to opposite sides of the box, the sides, lid
or cover and bottom lying in substantially parallel planes when
collapsed for storage purposes, adjacent edges of the sides and the
hinged edges of the lid or cover and of the bottom and the edges of
the sides to which they are respectively attached being formed with
alternating tubular members ot receive hinge pins.
2. A collapsible box or container as claimed in Claim 1 in which the
lid or cover and/or the bottom are pressed
in@@@ds to enter between the sides, the extreme edges of the lid or
cover and/or bottom being of vertical U shape to engage over tubular
beaded edges of the sides.
3. A collapsible box or container substantially as described with
reference to the accompanying drawings.
