18. Example
18
The temperature distribution across a wall 1 m thick at a certain instant of
time is given as T(x) = a + bx + cx2
where T is in °C and x is in meters, while a = 900°C, b = -300°C/m and c
= 50°C/m2. A uniform heat generation is 1000 W/m3, is present in the wall
of area 10 m2 having the density of 1600 kg/m3, thermal conductivity of
40 W/m K and specific heat of 4 kJ/kg K.
1. Determine the rate of heat
transfer entering the wall (x = 0)
and leaving the wall (x = 1 m)
2. Determine the rate of change of
energy storage in wall
3. Determine the time rate of
temperature change at x = 0,
0.25 and 0.5 m
19. Example
19
Consider a steel pan placed on top of an electric range to cook spaghetti.
The bottom section of the pan is 0.4 cm thick and has a diameter of 18 cm.
The electric heating unit on the range top consume 800 W of power during
cooking, and 80% of the heat generated in the heating element is transfer
uniformly to the pan. Assuming constant thermal conductivity, obtain the
differential equation that describes the variation of the temperature in the
bottom section of the pan during steady operation
20. Example
20
A 2 kW resistance heater wire with thermal conductivity k = 15 W/m K,
diameter D = 0.4 cm, and length L = 50 cm is used to boil water by
immersing it in water. Assuming the variation of the thermal conductivity of
the wire with temperature to be negligible, obtain the differential equation
that describes the variation of the temperature in the wire during steady
operation.

24
A short cylindrical metal billet of a radius R and height h
is heated in an oven to a temperature of 300°C
throughout and is then taken out of the oven and allowed
to cool in ambient air at T∞= 20°C by convection and
radiation. Assuming the billet is cooled uniformly from all
outer surfaces and the variation of the thermal
conductivity of the material with temperature is
negligible, obtain the differential equation that describes
the variation of the temperature in the billet during this
cooling process.

39. Example Heat Conduction in a Plane Wall
39
Consider a large plane wall of thickness L = 0.2 m, thermal conductivity k = 1.2
W/m °C and surface area A = 15 m2. The two sides of the wall are maintained at
constant temperatures of T1 = 120°C and T2 = 50°C, respectively. Determine
(a) The variation of temperature within the wall and the value of temperature at x =
0.1 m
(b) The rate of heat conduction through the wall under steady condition
41. Example A Wall with various Sets of B.C.
41
Consider steady 1-dimensional heat conduction in a large plane wall of thickness L and
constant thermal conductivity k with no heat generation. Obtain expressions for the
variation of temperature within the wall for the following figures.
43. Example Heat Conduction in a Base Plate of an Iron
43
Consider the base plate of a 1200-W household iron that has a thickness of L = 0.5
cm, base area of A = 300 cm2 and thermal conductivity of k = 15 W/m °C. The inner
surface of the base plate is subjected to uniform heat flux generated by the resistance
heaters inside and the outer surface loses heat to the surroundings at T∞= 20°C by
convection. Taking the convection heat transfer coefficient to be h = 80 W/m2 °C and
disregarding heat loss by radiation, obtain an expression for the variation of
temperature in the base plate and evaluate the temperatures at the inner and the outer
surfaces.
45. Example Heat Loss through a Steam Pipe
45
Consider a steam pipe of length L = 20 m, inner radius r1 = 6 cm, outer radius r2 = 8
cm and thermal conductivity k = 20 W/m °C. The inner and outer surfaces of the pipe
are maintained at average temperature of T1 = 150°C and T2 = 60°C, respectively.
Obtain a general relation for the temperature distribution inside the pipe under steady
state conditions, and determine the rate of heat loss from the steam through the pipe.

52. Example Centerline Temperature of a Resistance Heater
52
A 2 kW resistance heater wire whose thermal conductivity k = 15 W/m °C has a
diameter of D = 4 mm and a length of L = 0.5 m, and is used to boil water. If the outer
surface temperature of a resistance wire is Ts = 105°C, determine the temperature at
the center of the wire.
53. Example
53
Ex 1 A pipe in a manufacturing plant is transporting superheated vapor at a
mass flow rate of 0.3 kg/s. The pipe is 10 m long, has an inner diameter of 5
cm and pipe wall thickness of 6 mm. The pipe has a thermal conductivity of 17
W/m K and the inner pipe surface is at a uniform temperature of 120C. The
temperature drop between the inlet and exit of the pipe is 7C, and the
constant pressure specific heat of vapor is 2190 J/kg C. If the air temperature
in the manufacturing plant is 25C, determine the heat transfer coefficient as a
result of convection between the outer pipe surface and the surrounding air.
Ex 2 Consider a large 5 cm-thick brass plate (k = 111 W/m K) in which heat is
generated uniformly at a rate of 2x105 W/m3. One side of plate is insulated
while the other side is exposed to an environment at 25C with a heat transfer
coefficient of 44 W/m2 K. Explain where in the plate the highest and the
lowest temperatures will occur and determine their values
