4. Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
Equilibrium State
Non-equilibrium phenomena

5. Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
Non-equilibrium phenomena
Thermodynamics
5
TA > TB
(Temperature
T2 > T1 Heat Transfer
T2 = T1 No heat transfer

Sizing problem
Rating Problem
Find: Heat transfer rate
Sizing Problem
Find: ขนาด (Size) ของระบบ
Given: ∆T ของระบบ, Heat transfer rate

Engineering Heat Transfer
Sensible heat Temp. change
Latent heat Phase change
e = u e = h = u + pv

10. Specific Heat
10
Specific Heat (ค่าความจุความร้อนจาเพาะ)
Specific heat at constant volume cv
du = cvdt, ∆u = cv,avg∆T, ∆U = mcv,avg∆T
Specific heat at constant pressure cp
dh = cpdt, ∆h = cp,avg∆T, ∆H = mcp,avg∆T
11. Specific Heat
11
Pure substance
cv, cp = f(T, p)
Ideal gas
cv, cp = f(T)
Incompressible substance
cv = cp = c
12. Energy Transfer
12
Work
Heat Transfer
Work Transfer

Ex 1 The hot combustion gas of a furnace are separated from the ambient
air and its surroundings which are at 25C by a brick wall 0.15 m think.
The brick has k = 1.2 W/m K and emissivity = 0.8. Under steady state
condition, outer surface temperature = 100C, h = 20 W/m2 K. Determine
the brick inner surface temperature
Ex 2 A Square isothermal chip is of width w = 5 mm on a side and is
mounted in a substrate such that its side and back surfaces are well
insulated, while the front surface is exposed to the flow of a coolant at T∞
= 15C. From reliability considerations, the chip temperature must not
exceed T = 85C. If the coolant is air and the corresponding convection
coefficient is h = 200 W/m2 K, what is the maximum allowable chip
power? If the coolant is a dielectric liquid for which h = 3000 W/m2 K,
what is the maximum allowable chip power?
